• How to maxmise the largest contiguous block of memory in the Large Object Heap

  The situation is that I am making a WCF call to a remote server which is returns an XML document as a string. Most of the time this return value is a few K, sometimes a few dozen K, very occasionally a few hundred K, but very rarely it could be several megabytes (first problem is that there is no way for me to know). It's these rare occasions that are causing grief. I get a stack trace that starts: System.OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown. at System.Xml.BufferBuilder.AddBuffer() at System.Xml.BufferBuilder.AppendHelper(Char* pSource, Int32 count) at System.Xml.BufferBuilder.Append(Char[] value, Int32 start, Int32 count) at System.Xml.XmlTextReaderImpl.ParseText() at System.Xml.XmlTextReaderImpl.ParseElementContent() at System.Xml.XmlTextReaderImpl.Read() at System.Xml.XmlTextReader.Read() at System.Xml.XmlReader.ReadElementString() at Microsoft.Xml.Serialization.GeneratedAssembly.XmlSerializationReaderMDRQuery.Read2_getMarketDataResponse() at Microsoft.Xml.Serialization.GeneratedAssembly.ArrayOfObjectSerializer2.Deserialize(XmlSerializationReader reader) at System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer.Deserialize(XmlReader xmlReader, String encodingStyle, XmlDeserializationEvents events) at System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer.Deserialize(XmlReader xmlReader, String encodingStyle) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.ReadResponse(SoapClientMessage message, WebResponse response, Stream responseStream, Boolean asyncCall) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.Invoke(String methodName, Object[] parameters) I've read around and it is because the Large Object Heap is just getting too fragmented, so even preceding the call with a quick check to StringBuilder.EnsureCapacity just causes the OutOfMemoryException to be thrown earlier (and because I'm guessing at what's needed, it might not actually need that much so my check is causing more problems than it is solving). Some opinions are that there's not much I can do about it. Some of the questions I've asked myself: Use less memory - have you checked for leaks? Yes. The memory usage goes up and down, but there's no fundamental growth that guarantees this to happen. Some of the times it fails, it succeeded at that stage previously. Transfer smaller amounts Not an option, this is a third party web service over which I have no control (or at least it would take a long time to resolve, in the meantime I still have a problem) Can you do something to the LOH to make it less likely to fail? ... now this is most fruitful course. It's a 32-bit process (it has to be for various political, technical and boring reasons) but there's normally hundreds of meg free (multiples of the largest amount for which we've seen failures). Can we monitor the LOH? Using perfmon I can track the size of the heaps, but I don't think there's a way to monitor the largest available contiguous block of memory. Question is: any advice or suggestions for things to try?

  I've been sitting over this the whole day and Im a little tired already so please excuse me being brief. Im new to python. I just rewrrote a working program, into a bunch of functions in a class and everzthings messed up. I dont know if its me but Im very surprised i couldn t find a beginners tutorial on how to handle classes on the web so I have a few questions. First of all, in the init section of the class i have declared a bunch of variables with self.variable=something. Is it correct that i should be able to access/modify these variables in every function of the class by using self.variable in that function? In other words by declaring self.variable i have made these variables, global variables in the scope of the class right? If not how do i handle self. ? Secondly how do i correctly pass arguments to the class? some example code would be cool. thirdly how do i call a function of the class outside of the class scope? some example code would be cool. fouthly how do I create an Instance of the class INITIALCLASS in another class OTHERCLASS, passing variables from OTHERCLASS to INITIALCLASS? some example code would be cool. I Want to call a function from OTHERCLASS with arguments from INITIALCLASS. • How to generalize a method call in Java (to avoid code duplication)

  I have a process that needs to call a method and return its value. However, there are several different methods that this process may need to call, depending on the situation. If I could pass the method and its arguments to the process (like in Python), then this would be no problem. However, I don't know of any way to do this in Java. Here's a concrete example. (This example uses Apache ZooKeeper, but you don't need to know anything about ZooKeeper to understand the example.) The ZooKeeper object has several methods that will fail if the network goes down. In this case, I always want to retry the method. To make this easy, I made a "BetterZooKeeper" class that inherits the ZooKeeper class, and all of its methods automatically retry on failure. This is what the code looked like: public class BetterZooKeeper extends ZooKeeper { private void waitForReconnect() { // logic } @Override public Stat exists(String path, Watcher watcher) { while (true) { try { return super.exists(path, watcher); } catch (KeeperException e) { // We will retry. } waitForReconnect(); } } @Override public byte[] getData(String path, boolean watch, Stat stat) { while (true) { try { return super.getData(path, watch, stat); } catch (KeeperException e) { // We will retry. } waitForReconnect(); } } @Override public void delete(String path, int version) { while (true) { try { super.delete(path, version); return; } catch (KeeperException e) { // We will retry. } waitForReconnect(); } } } (In the actual program there is much more logic and many more methods that I took out of the example for simplicity.) We can see that I'm using the same retry logic, but the arguments, method call, and return type are all different for each of the methods. The run() method holds the retry logic, and the action() method is a placeholder for whichever ZooKeeper method needs to be run. Each of the public methods of BetterZooKeeper instantiates an anonymous inner class that is a subclass of the RetryableZooKeeperAction inner class, and it overrides the action() method. The local variables are (strangely enough) implicitly passed to the action() method, which is possible because they are final. In the end, this approach does work and it does eliminate the duplication of the retry logic. However, it has two major drawbacks: (1) it creates a new object every time a method is called, and (2) it's ugly and hardly readable. Also I had to workaround the 'delete' method which has a void return value. So, here is my question: is there a better way to do this in Java? This can't be a totally uncommon task, and other languages (like Python) make it easier by allowing methods to be passed. I suspect there might be a way to do this through reflection, but I haven't been able to wrap my head around it.

  Hi, I am using calling web services and using WCF generated service-reference on the client. I have saved XML responses that are received from test service to disk (without SOAP envelope and body tags) I would like to load them from disk and create objects from them. Lets' take the following method from my web service: SomeMethodResponse SomeMethod(SomeMethodRequest req) I manually (through SOAP UI) save the response to disk to file, Sample response: < SomeMethodResponse xmlns="http://myNamespace"> <SomeMember1>value</SomeMember1> </SomeMethodResponse xmlns="http://myNamespace"> Then I try to deserialize the object from file using: DataContractSerializer dcs = new DataContractSerializer(typeof(SomeMethodResponse)) This fails – the serializer complains with the error, that it is expecting element in namespace 'http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07', but found element in 'http://myNamespace'. Question: Why does the DataContractSerializer not use the namespace, that is declared on SomeMethodResponseType with XmlTypeAttribute(Namespace="http://myNamespace")? I can work around this by explicitly providing the namespace and the root element to DataContractSerializer constructor. But then it fails with message similar to: Error in line X position Y (last line of the XMLdocument). 'EndElement' 'SomeMethodResponse from namespace 'httpmyNapespace’ is not expected. Expecting element 'someNameField'. SomeName is an element in the XSD that web service is using. It is also a property on the SomeMethodResponse type, backed by the private field called someNameField. It looks like DataContractSerializer is trying to deserialize the fields in addition to properties.   I've created a simple WCF service but when I use Visual Studio to add a service reference, this error comes up. The message with Action '' cannot be processed at the receiver, due to a ContractFilter mismatch at the EndpointDispatcher. This may be because of either a contract mismatch (mismatched Actions between sender and receiver) or a binding/security mismatch between the sender and the receiver. Check that sender and receiver have the same contract and the same binding (including security requirements, e.g. Message, Transport, None). • should I use Entity Framework instead of raw ADO.NET

  I am new to CSLA and Entity Framework. I am creating a new CSLA / Silverlight application that will replace a 12 year old Win32 C++ system. The old system uses a custom DCOM business object library and uses ODBC to get to SQL Server. The new system will not immediately replace the old system -- they must coexist against the same database for years to come. At first I thought EF was the way to go since it is the latest and greatest. After making a small EF model and only 2 CSLA editable root objects (I will eventually have hundreds of objects as my DB has 800+ tables) I am seriously questioning the use of EF. In the current system I have the need many times to do fine detail performance tuning of the queries which I can do because of 100% control of generated SQL. But it seems in EF that so much happens behind the scenes that I lose that control. Article like http://toomanylayers.blogspot.com/2009/01/entity-framework-and-linq-to-sql.html don't help my impression of EF. People seem to like EF because of LINQ to EF but since my criteria is passed between client and server as criteria object it seems like I could build queries just as easily without LINQ. I understand in WCF RIA that there is query projection (or something like that) where I can do client side LINQ which does move to the server before translation into actual SQL so in that case I can see the benefit of EF, but not in CSLA. If I use raw ADO.NET, will I regret my decision 5 years from now? Has anyone else made this choice recently and which way did you go?

• Recovering Broken Connections In A Peer to Peer Network

  Hi All, I am implementing a peer to peer network using WCF NetPeerTcpBinding connections. I am using a central server which itself overrides the class CustomPeerResolverService. All this service does is register peers, and publish information about the peers to each other. On my server application I can visibly see which peers are currently connected on the GUI. My question is, each peer has a TCP connection to the server. When I unplug my network connection all connections to this server are severed. When the network comes back online those connections to the server are not re-established. What do I need to do to make sure they are re-established? • How to implement a .net 3-tier architecture using Winforms

  I have for some time build n-tier Applications using a database server as the data tier, Winforms as the presentation tier and an ASP.NET asmx webservice in the middle to send back and forth untyped Datasets. While this approach has worked for me so far, it certainly does feel outdated today. What technologies should I use if I were to create a similar architectured application today? .net 4.0 technology is welcome. I still want a database server as the datatier and the asmx webservices should probably be replaced by WCF. I would still like to have the presentation tier running as a desktop application (Winforms or WPF) so ignore ASP.net for this question. My main question really comes down to what to use as business objects. I want something that is easier to bind to the interface than untyped Datasets and strongly-typed datasets feels very heavy. I also need something that can track changes to make sure users do not override each other's changes in the database. Will the Entity Framework 4 be usable for a scenario like this? Are there any thorough guides available?

• SSL certificates: No Client certificate key exhange

  I am trying to access a WCF web service, that is using two way SSL encryption. When I try to call the service I get a System.ServiceModel.Security.SecurityNegotiationException: Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS with authority 'XXX.xx'. --- System.Net.WebException: The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel. I have tried activating wire shark, to see what is sent to and from the server: I see a client hello and a server hello. But there is no client response to the server hello. I was expecting a "Certificate. Client key exchange. Change cipher. Encrypted handshake Message" package, but none is sent. I'm thinking it is a problem with the certificate sent by the server, that somehow my client server does not trusy it. Here is what I have already tried: I have created the certificate, through the proper authority, though I could have made a mistake in the certificate request without knowing it. I have added the two root certificates to: trusted root certificates, trusted publishers and trusted people. I have also added the client certificate to trusted people. My colleague has succeded in establishing connection on a win 2008 server (i'm using a 2003, because it is necessary for some odd reason - don't ask). I can't see any differences in our approach, so i'm a bit lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I have a wcf client/server application that I'm trying to get deployed at a client location. I believe it's a cross-domain issue, as we've deployed it successfully on the same computer. Now I haven't gotten the inner exceptions yet, but everything I research online tells me that BasicHttpBinding should fix this, however they tell me they are using BasicHttpBinding. Is this error possible with BasicHttpBinding like how I have mine set up above? Also, when I check my BasicHttpBinding.Security.Message.ClientCredentialType, it says UserName. Does this even matter if my Security.Mode is "None"? Thanks.

  I have a WCF Web Service which is kept under an Application Pool on IIS. Lately I've been getting "Service Unavaiable" when I'm trying to make calls to this Web Service. The first thing I tried to do was restarting the Application Pool. I did it and after a couple of seconds, it crashed and stopped. Looking at the Event Viewer, I found these messages, which by the moment couldn't help me to find where the problem is. A process serving application pool 'X' reported a failure. The process id was '11616'. The data field contains the error number. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. After getting a couple of these, I got this one: Application pool 'X' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool. • svcutil, WSDL, and the generated interfaces not being sufficient for implementation

  I have a WSDL file defining a service that I have to implement in WCF. I had read that I could generate the proxy using svcutil from the WSDL file, and that I could then use the generated interfaces to implement the service. Unfortunately, I can't quite seem to find a way to have the interfaces contain the correct attributes to expose the contracts. All operations have the "OperationContractAttribute" attribute, but it appears as though for the service to be exposed, I require the "OperationContract" for each one. Same thing with "ServiceContractAttribute" and "ServiceContract", and I imagine DataContract, but I haven't gotten that far. I could manually make these changes, but I would much prefer a technique where the existing code could be easily used, or better code could be generated for my uses. Is there some way that this can be done? Thanks.   Hi there. I'm recieving that wonderfuly ambiguous error message when using one of my webmethods on my WCF webservice. As that error message doesn't provide any explanation whatsoever allow me to post my theory. I believe it may have something to do with the return type I'm using I have a Types DLL which is refrenced in both the webservice and the client. In this DLL is the base class ExceptionMessages. There is a child of this class called DrawingExcepions. • clientaccesspolicy.xml not being requested via HTTPS

  I have a silverlight app that has been using http to communicate w/self-hosted WCF services during development. I am now securing the services via https. I am getting an error I had back at the beginning of the project: "An error occurred while trying to make a request to URI 'https://localhost:8303/service'. This could be due to attempting to access a service in a cross-domain way without a proper cross-domain policy in place, or a policy that is unsuitable for SOAP services. You may need to contact the owner of the service to publish a cross-domain policy file and to ensure it allows SOAP-related HTTP headers to be sent. This error may also be caused by using internal types in the web service proxy without using the InternalsVisibleToAttribute attribute. Please see the inner exception for more details." My clientaccesspolicy.xml file is setup to allow access from http://* and https://*. The only difference is using http vs https. The issue is I can usually see (via Fiddler) the clientaccesspolicy.xml file being requested, but now I cannot. I'm assuming it is failing because of this. Any ideas?
