  • How should one manager external and internal DNS servers at the same time?

    We run a mac network here in the office. We have an internal DNS server to manage the network. Everything is resolved to a local ip (for mail.mydomain.com etc). However, we also have an external DNS server for when our users are not in the office. However, isn't it a pain to have to manage two lists? Whenever you change something you have to change another? And you can't have one be a slave of another because the ip are sometimes different (for example mail.mydomain.com would point to a local ip in local dns server but an external ip in the external dns server). Any tricks?

  • Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

    I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about. In order to do so, I need the list of updates in the file named "wsusscn2.cab". Is there a well-known page or URL at Microsoft for downloading the most up-to-date version of that file for MBSA offline mode? Thank you.

I don't have a Firefox handler set up for every text file extension under the sun, and I don't want to have to.     The official recommendation of Ubuntu is to use sudo do-release-upgrade to do an online upgrade from one version to the next. Historically many of my Debianite friends and myself have simply altered apt's sources.list and run apt-get dist-upgrade. I follow Ubuntu's recommendations, but I've always wondered what the magic difference between these two processes is. What, exactly, does do-release-upgrade do, on say an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10? (Examples from other releases welcome.)

  • How can I download a copy of an S3 public data set?

    i was naively assuming I could do something like s3cmd sync s3://snap-d203feb5 /var/tmp/copy but I seem to have the wrong idea of how to go about this. I cannot even get a simple thing to work; vnix$ s3cmd ls s3://snap-d203feb5 Bucket 'snap-d203feb5': ERROR: Bucket 'snap-d203feb5' does not exist I guess the identifier I have is not for a "bucket" but for a "public data set". How do I go from one to the other? Do I have to start up an EC2 instance and create a bucket for this? How? The instructions at http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-public-data-sets.html seem to assume I want to use the data in an EC2 instance, but in this case, I'd just like to browse a bit, at least for a start. By the by, copy/pasting the "US Snapshot ID" causes a nasty traceback from Python; they publish the ID with a weird Unicode (I presume) dash which cannot directly be copy/pasted. Is there a mistake when I copy it? And what's the significance of "US" in there? Can't I use the data outside North America??

    I'm using ruby 4.2, rubygems 1.3.5-1ubuntu2 and Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. I installed ruby and rubygems with Synaptic. Since "The gem command will output its progress while it sucks down and installs all the necessary gems for a full Merb install. " is written at http://wiki.merbivore.com/howto/installation/gems, when I type sudo gem update --system, I get: "ERROR: While executing gem ... (RuntimeError) gem update --system is disabled on Debian. RubyGems can be updated using the official Debian repositories by aptitude or apt-get." and rubygems has list, build and help commands, I'm wondering if in Ubuntu rubygems is used only for something other than downloading. If it isn't, why isn't rubygems showing any text for sudo gem install merb?

Do any simple solutions come to mind that might lever wget, PowerShell, or Python? Thanks!

  • Ditto (clipboard manager): can't set shortcut of Win+<num>. Get “Error Registering Position 1”

    Somone made a Youtube video on Ditto, and that person uses Win+Num to paste items from the list. He put a screenshot of his settings on Google Plus: When I try to do the same, which is to put “1” in the text field of Position 1, and check the “Win” box to add the Windows key as the sole modifier for the shortcut, which will be Win + 1, I get an error in that says “Error Registering Position 1” in a window titled CP_Main: Could it be because Win+Num conflicts with the natural Win+Num shortcut (starts the application pinned to the taskbar in that position, or switches to that program) of Windows 7?   • Formatting not retained in paste from Ditto (clipboard manager). Plain text pasted instead [Solved] Add supported types

    I'm trying to use Ditto on the Ditto documentation. If I were to copy the table of contents, then paste it (without Ditto) to the word processor, I get http://i.imgur.com/V1GU3.png, and the formatting is maintained. As as a result of the copy operation, the table of contents also goes into the Saved Items List (= History List = Lists the Clips saved from the Clipboard) in Ditto’s Main Window: I open a blank document to paste from Ditto instead of the default clipboard, and press either Ctrl-`, the default Ditto window activation Global Hot Key, or click the tray icon. From this point, I can do 3 things to close the Ditto window, and place the item on the clipboard (the default clipboard?). Select the item, and press Enter Put the cursor on the item, and double-click Select the item, and press Ctrl-c 1) and 2) send a right-click where the cursor is, after the Ditto window closes (presumably to have the paste option ready to access?): Ctrl-c just closes the Ditto window. Whichever method is used, the contents are pasted in what I believe is plain text: http://i.imgur.com/mQAZH.png How do I keep the formatting that the default clipboard keeps? Thanks.
