  • Why aren't min-width and max-width working as I expect?

    I'm trying to adjust a CSS page layout using min-width and max-width. To simplify the problem, I made this test page. I'm trying it out in the latest versions of Firefox and Chrome with the same results. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Testing min-width and max-width</title> <style type="text/css"> div{float: left; max-width: 400px; min-width: 200px;} div.a{background: orange;} div.b{background: gray;} </style> </head> <body> <div class="a"> (Giant block of filler text here) </div> <div class="b"> (Giant block of filler text here) </div> </body> </html> Here's what I expect to happen: With the browser maximized, the divs sit side by side, each 400px wide: their maximum width Shrink the browser window, and they both shrink to 200px: their minimum width Further shrinking the browser has no effect on them Here's what actually happens, starting at step 2: Shrink the browser window, and as soon as they can't sit side-by-side at their max width, the second div drops below the first Further shrinking the browser makes them get narrower and narrower, as small as I can make the window So here's are my questions: What does max-width mean if the element will sooner hop down in the layout than go lower than its maximum width? What does min-width mean if the element will happily get narrower than that if the browser window keeps shrinking? Is there any way to achieve what I want: have these elements sit side-by-side, happily shrinking until they reach 200px each, and only then adjust the layout so that the second one drops down? And of course... What am I doing wrong?

Having this connection, can we allow multiple connections virtually over this connection like VPN(but not VPN)? I mean multiple applications run on remote machine and you try to access to these applications, is there any multiplexing mechanism or concept supporting such feature?

  • What can we do to make Microsoft add IntelliTrace to VS 2010 Professional Edition?

    Now that Microsoft has released VS 2010 I went to the product page here. To my amazement I found out that IntelliTrace(Historical Debugger) is supported only on the Ultimate Edition of VS 2010. This mean that you have to spend almost $4000 for renewal and almost $12000 for a new license. Does someone have any idea how can we change this decision? Especially make them add this feature to VS 2010 Professional Edition.

  • Why is the software world full of status codes?

    Why did programmers ever start using status codes? I mean, I guess I could imagine this might be useful back in the days when a text string was an expensive resource. WAYYY back then. But even after we had megabytes of memory to work with, we continued to use them. What possible advantage could there be for obfuscating the meaning of an error message or status message behind a status code?

  • Reloading embed PDF in a DIV (empty Accrobat Reader error popup)

    Hello, I have a web application coded in C#/ASP.NET. The application basically exports a PDF file when the user click on Save. It then reloads a DIV, putting the EMBED (with the src pointing to the newly generated pdf file) in it. Sometimes the embed area just gets black and I get this window from Acrobat Reader: http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/3359/acreader.jpg. What does it mean? Has anyone ever see this?

So, first, let's copy their example data: mydata=data.frame(X1=rnorm(30), X2=rnorm(30,5,2), SNP1=c(rep("AA",10), rep("Aa",10), rep("aa",10)), SNP2=c(rep("BB",10), rep("Bb",10), rep("bb",10))) I am going to ignore SNP2 in this example and just pretend the values in SNP1 denote group membership. So then, I may want some summary statistics about each group in SNP1: "AA", "Aa", "aa". Then if I want to calculate the means for each variable, it makes sense (modifying their code slightly) to use: > ddply(mydata, c("SNP1"), function(df) data.frame(meanX1=mean(df$X1), meanX2=mean(df$X2))) SNP1 meanX1 meanX2 1 aa 0.05178028 4.812302 2 Aa 0.30586206 4.820739 3 AA -0.26862500 4.856006 But what if I want the sample covariance matrix for each group? Ideally, I would like a 3D array, where the I have the covariance matrix for each group, and the third dimension denotes the corresponding group. I tried a modified version of the previous code and got the following results that have convinced me that I'm doing something wrong. > daply(mydata, c("SNP1"), function(df) cov(cbind(df$X1, df$X2))) , , = 1 SNP1 1 2 aa 1.4961210 -0.9496134 Aa 0.8833190 -0.1640711 AA 0.9942357 -0.9955837 , , = 2 SNP1 1 2 aa -0.9496134 2.881515 Aa -0.1640711 2.466105 AA -0.9955837 4.938320 I was thinking that the dim() of the 3rd dimension would be 3, but instead, it is 2. Really this is a sliced up version of the covariance matrix for each group. If we manually compute the sample covariance matrix for aa, we get: [,1] [,2] [1,] 1.4961210 -0.9496134 [2,] -0.9496134 2.8815146 Using plyr, the following gives me what I want in list() form: > dlply(mydata, c("SNP1"), function(df) cov(cbind(df$X1, df$X2))) $aa [,1] [,2] [1,] 1.4961210 -0.9496134 [2,] -0.9496134 2.8815146 $Aa [,1] [,2] [1,] 0.8833190 -0.1640711 [2,] -0.1640711 2.4661046 $AA [,1] [,2] [1,] 0.9942357 -0.9955837 [2,] -0.9955837 4.9383196 attr(,"split_type") [1] "data.frame" attr(,"split_labels") SNP1 1 aa 2 Aa 3 AA But like I said earlier, I would really like this in a 3D array. Any thoughts on where I went wrong with daply() or suggestions? Of course, I could typecast the list from dlply() to a 3D array, but I'd rather not do this because I will be repeating this process many times in a simulation. As a side note, I found one method (http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg86328.html) that provides the sample covariance matrix for each group, but the outputted object is bloated.     This is a pretty simple question- how can I check if a NSURL is linking to a local file? I know, RTFM, but I checked the documentation and I don't seem to see any methods related to this. The only methods I did find were -isFileReferenceURL and -isFileURL, but I think these only check if the URL directly links to a file. note: I'm making an iPhone app, so by "local file" I mean a .html file stored in the project's resources.
