• Best way of implementing DropDownList in ASP.NET MVC 2?

  I am trying to understand the best way of implementing a DropDownList in ASP.NET MVC 2 using the DropDownListFor helper. This is a multi-part question. First, what is the best way to pass the list data to the view? Pass the list in your model with a SelectList property that contains the data Pass the list in via ViewData How do I get a blank value in the DropDownList? Should I build it into the SelectList when I am creating it or is there some other means to tell the helper to auto create an empty value? Lastly, if for some reason there is a server side error and I need to redisplay the screen with the DropDownList, do I need to fetch the list values again to pass into the view model? This data is not maintained between posts (at least not when I pass it via my view model) so I was going to just fetch it again (it's cached). Am I going about this correctly?

  I would like to know if there are any guidelineswhich a developer should follow as to when (and where) to place locks. For instance: I understand that code such as this should be locked, to avoid the possibility of another thread changing the value of SomeHeapValue unexpectedly. class Foo { public SomeHeapObject myObject; public void DoSummat(object inputValue_) { myObject.SomeHeapValue = inputValue_; } } My question is, however, how deep does one go with the locking? • Python threads all executing on a single core

  I have a Python program that spawns many threads, runs 4 at a time, and each performs an expensive operation. Pseudocode: for object in list: t = Thread(target=process, args=(object)) # if fewer than 4 threads are currently running, t.start(). Otherwise, add t to queue But when the program is run, Activity Monitor in OS X shows that 1 of the 4 logical cores is at 100% and the others are at nearly 0. Obviously I can't force the OS to do anything but I've never had to pay attention to performance in multi-threaded code like this before so I was wondering if I'm just missing or misunderstanding something.   I am look for a server side PDF library (or command line tool) which can: split a multi-page PDF file into individual PDF files, based on a search result of the PDF file content Examples: Search "Page ???" pattern in text and split the big PDF into 001.pdf, 002,pdf, ... ???.pdf A server program will scan the PDF, look for the search pattern, save the page(s) which match the patten, and save the file in the disk. It will be nice with integration with PHP / Ruby. Command line tool is also acceptable. It will be a server side (linux or win32) batch processing tool. • How to change font size in a pickerview?

  I'm fairly new to iPhone programming and am trying to implement a double-component PickerView. At this point the picker works fine in terms of taking user input, created with Interface Builder. However, I need to change the font size to accommodate the text length in each column. I very much would appreciate any link to a straightforward method to creating a multi-component picker with an adjustable font size. Seems like it is not possible if Interface Builder is used to create the picker. So far I have not found any code links that address this issue in detail. Thanks in advance.

• How can I match at the beginning of any line, including the first, with a Perl regex?

  According the the Perl documentation on regexes: By default, the "^" character is guaranteed to match only the beginning of the string ... Embedded newlines will not be matched by "^" ... You may, however, wish to treat a string as a multi-line buffer, such that the "^" will match after any newline within the string ... you can do this by using the /m modifier on the pattern match operator. The "after any newline" part means that it will only match at the beginning of the 2nd and subsequent lines. What if I want to match at the beginning of any line (1st, 2nd, etc.)? EDIT: OK, it seems that the file has BOM information (3 chars) at the beginning and that's what's messing me up. Any way to get ^ to match anyway? EDIT: So in the end it works (as long as there's no BOM), but now it seems that the Perl documentation is wrong, since it says "after any newline"

  Hi *, I've got a problem with an multi-threaded desktop application using Castle ActiveRecord in C#: To keep the GUI alive while searching for the objects based on userinput I'm using the BackgroundWorker for the search-function. Some of the properties of the objects, especially some HasMany-Relations, are marked as Lazy. Now, when the search is finished and the user selects an resulting object, some of the properties of this object should be displayed. But as the search was done by the BackgroundWorker in a different thread, accessing the properties fails as the session for the lazy-access is no longer available. What will be the best way to do the search in an extra thread to keep the GUI alive and to access all properties correctly including those marked as lazy? Thanks for any advise! Regards sc911

  I have a table "tbluser" with 2 fields: userid = integer (autoincrement) user = nvarchar(100) I have a multithreaded/multi server application that uses this table. I want to accomplish the following: Guarantee that field user is unique in my table Guarantee that combination userid/user is unique in each server's memory I have the following stored procedure: CREATE PROCEDURE uniqueuser @user nvarchar(100) AS BEGIN BEGIN TRAN DECLARE @userID int SET nocount ON SET @userID = (SELECT @userID FROM tbluser WITH (TABLOCKX) WHERE [user] = @user) IF @userID <> '' BEGIN SELECT userID = @userID END ELSE BEGIN INSERT INTO tbluser([user]) VALUES (@user) SELECT userID = SCOPE_IDENTITY() END COMMIT TRAN END Basically the application calls the stored procedure and provides a username as parameter. The stored procedure either gets the userid or insert the user if it is a new user. Am I correct to assume that the table is locked (only one server can insert/query)?

  In my Silverlight app I want a multi-line text box to expand every time the user hits Enter. The difficult part is how to calculate the correct height based on the number of text lines. I have tried the following but the textbox becomes too small: box.Height = box.FontSize*lineCount + box.Padding.Top + box.Padding.Bottom + box.BorderThickness.Top + box.BorderThickness.Bottom; What am I missing here?   I have a custom MyInputFormat that suppose to deal with record boundary problem for multi-lined inputs. But when I put the MyInputFormat into my UDF load function. • Suppressing the language select button iPhone

  I'm working on an application now that contains an account register section. One field with secureTextEntry = NO (for registering only). The idea is this make registration faster and hopefully increases the number of signups. It's simple enough for me to just place a regular UITextField but if the user has any additional language keyboards then it's possible for the user to enter non-password friendly characters. Unlike in when secureTextEntry = YES. I know I can do textField.keyboardType = UIKeyboardTypeASCIICapable to get the text field to display the ASCII keyboard first, but the user will still have the keyboard switch button which will allow them to get to undesirable characters. Is there a simple method for suppressing the international button or forcing ASCII only keyboard with no international button? [EDIT] Another perhaps better option might be to suppress multi byte keyboards or even to display the text in the case that secureTextEntry = YES any ideas here? [EDIT AGAIN] I've decided it's a really bad idea to suppress the international button as non-multibyte characters should all be allowed.

  I am new to threads,SDL and how graphic work in general. I've been looking through all of LazyFoo's SDL tutorials, and had helped me greatly. But in his tutorials about multi threading, he commented that you should never use video functions in separate threads, or might cause problem. I am curious how it should be done, as I still have a vague understanding of graphics and threads. As one of my projects is a shoot'em up, I was wondering if I should create one thread that displays all the graphics, one threads receives all the player input for his ship, and another thread for the enemy AI. If this is NOT how it should be done, (I think it's wrong) does anyone have any advice of how graphics should be implemented with user input and enemy AI with threads? • What is the best method to write user "log files" of an android application to a file in a remote server or a table in a remote database?

  I am creating a multi user android application and it is connected to a php web service in a remote server and to a remote database via that web service. I want to keep a track of all the important activities done by the users. For an example if a user logged in to the app and changed his profile details and then logged out, a brief description of what he has done should be recorded(with time) somewhere. So then the admin of the system can see what the users are doing. So I think it is better to use log cat files and then flush all those data to a unique file in the server or a table in the database, when the user logs out or exists from his account. If it is appropriate How to do it?

  So I'm getting really sick of E*TRADE and, being a developer, would love to find an online broker that offers an API. It would be great to be able to write my own trading tools, and maybe even modify existing ones. Based on my research so far, I've only found one option. Interactive Brokers offers a multi-language API (Java/C++/ActiveX/DDE) and has some fairly decent commission rates to boot. I want to make sure there aren't any other options out there I should be considering. Any ideas? Update: Based on answers so far, here's a quick list... • [grails] attaching multiple files to a domain class

  I've seen various Grails plugins which allow easier handling of file uploads, however these tend only to support a single file per form-submit. I'd like a multi-attach form where as soon as you pick one file, an extra field and button is added using JS (various sites do it like this). Do you know of any good plugins which provide elegant uploading of multiple files without excessive coding? A progress bar either per-file of for the whole process would also be very nice. I don't know to what extent I can allow GORM to handle a java.io.File field (or in this case a Collection<File>).

• Buffer management for socket application best practice

  Having a Windows IOCP app............ I understand that for async i/o operation (on network) the buffer must remain valid for the duration of the send/read operation. So for each connection I have one buffer for the reading. For sending I use buffers to which I copy the data to be sent. When the sending operation completes I release the buffer so it can be reused. So far it's nice and not of a big issue. What remains unclear is how do you guys do this? Another thing is that even when having things this way, I mean multi-buffers, the receiver side might be flooded (talking from experience) with data. Even setting SO_RCVBUF to 25MB didn't help in my testings. So what should I do? Have a to-be-sent queue?

• Cross Theaded Calls - Many controls Heavy GUI Application after .net 1.1 2.0 upgrade- best way ??

  I have recently upgraded a .net1.1 solution to .net2.0. AS this is a very heavy GUI appilcation with loads of controls and many multithreaded operations that update the GUI. While these operations worked seamlessly in .net1.1 it is throwing up Cross Threaded Illegal operations after the upgrade. Considering the fact that tehre are numerous grids, buttons and status labels that need to be updated via these multi threaded operations, I decided to code for checking the InvokeRequired solution, however doing that for every control would probably not be the best way to go about it. I was wondering if you could suggest a better way of how I can go about it or propose any OOPS based class structure that I could code around to make the code look better. • Erlang on a JVM/CLR

  I've just started reading Joe Armstrongs book on Erlang and listened to his excellent talk on Software Engineering Radio. Its an interesting language/system and one whose time seems to have come around with the advent of multi-core machines. My question is: what is there to stop it being ported to the JVM or CLR? I realise that both virtual machines aren't setup to run the lightweight processes that Erlang calls for - but couldn't these be simulated by threads? Could we see a lightweight or cutdown version of Erlang on a non Erlang VM?
