  Everybody knows that java IO is blocking, and java NIO is non-blocking. In IO you will have to use the thread per client pattern, in NIO you can use one thread for all clients. Now my question follows: is it possible to make a non-blocking design using only the Java IO api. (not NIO) I was thinking about a pattern like this (obviously very simplified); List<Socket> li; for (Socket s : li) { InputStream in = s.getInputStream(); byte[] data = in.available(); in.read(data); // processData(data); (decoding packets, encoding outgoing packets } Also note that the client will always be ready for reading data. What are your opinions on this? Will this be suitable for a server that should at least hold a few hundred of clients without major performance issues?

• Is there any real advantage to use zend ce server over just referencing (include) the zend framework library?

  Hi, I'm new to PHP frameworks, and currently I'm trying Zend Framework (ZF). I'm old fashioned when it comes to installing software, I like to install apache/mysql/php all separetely since I find easier and it gives me more control of it. It seems that the "encouraged" way to develop with Zend Framework is using the Zend (CE) Server. I personally don't like this idea of a app install everything else (PHP/Apache and so on). From what I've seen if I include Zend Framework Library in php.ini path I'm ready to go. So is there any real advantage to use the Full Zend (CE) Server??

• C# Multi threading- Move objects between threads

  Hi, i am working with a winforms control that is both a GUI element and also does some internal processing that has not been exposed to the developer. When this component is instantiated it may take between 5 and 15 seconds to become ready so what i want to do is put it on another thread and when its done bring it back to the gui thread and place it on my form. The problem is that this will (and has) cause a cross thread exception. Normally when i work with worker threads its just with simple data objects i can push back when processing is complete and then use with controls already on the main thread but ive never needed to move an entire control in this fashion. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so how? If not how does one deal with a problem like this where there is the potential to lock the main gui?

• Allow users to enter a variable length list of items in asp.net form

  I need to let my users enter a variable length list of items into something that looks like a grid view (or a series of standard text boxes stacked vertically). Each item could be a few characters or a few hundred characters long, and I just want them to enter a "sentence", and then tab to the next row, and always having another blank one ready to go at the bottom of the list. I don't want to save any data to my SQL Server DB until they enter the entire list and then click on a "save all" button. When they hit the "save all" button they will be given a preview screen where the data will be presented as standard HTML ordered list. If they confirm/save, then each row of the grid will then be saved as a separate row into my SQL Server database (with an index to remember the order). What ASP.Net (or Jquery/javascript) UI control would be the best to use in this situation?

Since I have 2 animations going, it seems it ignores the .stop(). What can be done to prevent this? • svn update overwrite local copy - can I retrieve local copy?

  Hi: So I was editing a file on my local machine and I was ready to commit to the repository except that instead of running the svn commit, I ran svn update. Is there any way I can retrieve the changes that I had? I was working on a tex file in vim and I had closed the file before running svn update. Thanks. EDIT: I'm sorry - I completely was worried for nothing (project deadline in 30 mins and I thought I deleted all my changes). I realize that when I run svn update, it doesn't rewrite the local changes but tries to merge the files if there are no conflicts. Can someone tell me how to close or remove this post? Thanks.

  I have a div that is holding a google chart: <div id="chart_div" style="width: 600px; height: 300px;"></div> It has one CSS property: display: none. On the click of a button, I would like to have the chart be displayed using jQuery hide() and show(). It's working, however, the chart's dimensions are set to something different than I have specified and refuse to change to what I have specified.   I have two radio buttons each with a unique ID. When one is clicked, I would like to add $10 to a total. When the other is clicked, we go back to the original total price. My jquery looks like this: function check_ceu() { var price = <%= conference_price %>; if($('#ceu_yes').is(':checked')){ $('#total').val(parseFloat(price) + 10) } else{ $('#total').val(price) } } I have this function bound to document.ready (for page refreshes) and also the onchange handler of the radio buttons. In FF and Chrome this works fine. In IE, when the radio button with ID of "ceu_yes" is checked nothing happens, then when clicking back to the other radio button, 10 is added. So in essence, IE has the checkbox functionality reversed. Below is my code for the buttons: <input type="radio" name="ceu" id="ceu_yes" value="1" onchange="check_ceu()" /> $10 <input type="radio" name="ceu" id="ceu_no" value="0" checked="checked" onchange="check_ceu()" /> No, thank you Any ideas on this?

  Hi I have a couple questions about nhibernate. I still don't understand what contextual sessions means. I do web stuff so I just choose "web" but I really don't know what it is doing. Should I put session.BeginTransaction() in Application_BeginRequest? Should I commit everything in Application_EndRequest? Or should I commit when needed. Say I need to insert a user and then down in some code later I need to update some other table. Should I make the user and do the update then finally commit or should I wait till both are ready to be commited? Should you always have session.Rollback() in Application_EndRequest? Should I session.close() or session.dispose() or both in Application_EndRequest?
