• Tabbed javascript widget for a Rails app

  A user registers on our Rails app and they're given javascript to embed a widget in their website. The widget has a tabbed interface, like the JQuery tabs http://stilbuero.de/jquery/tabs_3/. iFrames have been tested, but the widget form factor and cross-domain policy negates the use of iframes. The widget is very dynamic and will often update the DOM with new content - and because of cross-domain policy, it looks as though JSONP is necessary. I understand that 'widget.js.erb' needs to create the widget layout, reference a stylesheet, render the tabs, etc - but once a tab is clicked, how does the widget request the content from the Rails app and render it in the DOM?

  Greetings I am trying to get Mongoid to work with my Rails app and I am getting an error: "Mongoid::Errors::InvalidDatabase in 'Shipment bol should be unique' Database should be a Mongo::DB, not NilClass" I have created the mongoid.yml file in my config directory and have mongodb running as a daemon. The config file is like so: defaults: &defaults host: localhost development: <<: *defaults database: ship-it-development test: <<: *defaults database: ship-it-test production: <<: *defaults host: <%= ENV['MONGOID_HOST'] % port: <%= ENV['MONGOID_PORT'] % database: <%= ENV['MONGOID_DATABASE'] % All of my specs fail with the above error. I am using rails 2.3.8. Anyone have ideas?

• BIRT Viewer with Rails App

  Has anyone tried using BIRT for reporting on a Rails app.. I am working on a pretty big app on ROR. I was trying to get BIRT to work happily with the app. Since the BIRT Report Designer cannot be used with Rails, I decided to use BIRT Viewer alone and give the links to the reports on the page and have BIRT Viewer running on Tomcat on the same box to render the reports. This has a big problem of not being able to allow the user to create any custom reports. Has anybody tried anything even remotely close to this??? If yes do you have any tips for me on any part of this endeavor? Thanks in advance for all the help.

• Fully custom validation error message with Rails

  Using Rails I'm trying to get an error message like "The song field can't be empty" on save. Doing the following: validates_presence_of :song_rep_xyz, :message => "can't be empty" ... only displays "Song Rep XYW can't be empty", which is not good because the title of the field is not user friendly. How can I change the title of the field itself ? I could change the actual name of the field in the database, but I have multiple "song" fields and I do need to have specific field names. I don't want to hack around rails' validation process and I feel there should be a way of fixing that.

  I'm reading these two pages resources Adding more RESTful actions The Rails Guides page shows map.resources :photos, :new => { :upload => :post } And its corresponding URL /photos/upload This looks wonderful. My routes.rb shows this map.resources :users, :new => { :signup => :get, :register => :post } When I do: [~/my_app]$ rake routes I see the two new routes added signup_new_user GET /users/new/signup(.:format) register_new_user POST /users/new/register(.:format) Note the inclusion of /new! I don't want that. I just want /users/signup and /users/register (as described in the Rails Routing Guide). Any help?

  I just discovered Erubis, a replacement for the default view renderer for Ruby on Rails. However, from what I can tell from reading about it, it's superior across the board. It is much faster. It has many more options. It can prevent cross site scripting without having to use h. Does this have any disadvantages versus the standard erb renderer? Why isn't this the standard renderer packaged with Rails? Also, the docs for Erubis say to install it just by installing the gem, and then add the following to environment.rb: require 'erubis/helpers/rails_helper' #Erubis::Helpers::RailsHelper.engine_class = Erubis::Eruby # or Erubis::FastEruby Reading the docs, FastEruby seems to be just a faster renderer than Eruby. Why wouldn't it be default and used by everyone? I'm highly interested in using the engine erubis::EscapedEruby which automatically calls h to escape html on fields from the database. Are there any gotchas I should be aware of or does this pretty much solve all cross site scripting?

• Rails and PostgreSQL: Role postgres does not exist

  I have installed postgresql on my Mac OS Lion, and am working on a rails app. I use RVM to keep everything separate from my other rails apps. For some reason when I try to migrate the db for the first time rake cannot find the postgres user. I get the error FATAL: role "postgres" does not exist I have pgAdmin 3 so I can clearly see there is a postgres user in the DB - the admin account in fact - so I'm not sure what else to do. I read somewhere about people having issues with postgresql because of which path it was installed in, but then i don't think i would have gotten that far if it couldn't find the db.   I am starting to implement an MTI solution and have a basic question. I have 3 physical models - SMSNotifications, EmailNotifications, TwitterNotifications and they are subclasses of notification. At times in my code, I want to say Notifications.find(:all)so that I can get a set of results sorted by their creation time. Then I want to do things based on their subclass. What is the way to write Notifications.find(:all) and have Rails look through the subclass tables and combine the results? Right now Rails still thinks I have a physical Notifications table which goes against my MTI design. I am also considering the possibility that I should be using STI instead. I would probably have 10 empty columns per row but if getting all notifications requires a query for each type of notification, then I feel like this could be a big issue. Thanks!

• Fastest way to deploy rails apps with Passenger

  I am working on a Dreamhost server with Rails 2.3.5. Every time I make changes to a site, I have to ssh into the site, remove all the files, upload a zip file containing all the new files for the site, unzip that file, migrate the database, and go. Something tells me there's a faster way to deploy rails apps. I am using mac Time Machine to keep track of different versions of my applications. I know git tracks files, but I don't really know how to work with it to deploy my applications, since passenger takes care of all the magic for me. What would be a faster way to deploy my applications (and avoid the downtime associated with my method when I delete all files on the server)? Thanks!

  Hello, In my application I the next task that has not already been done by a user. I have Three models, A Book that has many Tasks and then I have a User that has has and belongs to many tasks. The table tasks_users table contains all completed tasks so I need to write a complex query to find the next task to perform. I have came up with two solutions in pure SQL that works, but I cant translate them to rails, thats what I need help with SELECT * FROM `tasks` WHERE `tasks`.`book_id` = @book_id AND `tasks`.`id` NOT IN ( SELECT `tasks_users`.`task_id` FROM `tasks_users` WHERE `tasks_users`.`user_id` = @user_id) ORDER BY `task`.`date` ASC LIMIT 1; and equally without nested select SELECT * FROM tasks LEFT JOIN tasks_users ON tasks_users.tasks_id = task.id AND tasks_users.user_id = @user_id WHERE tasks_users.task_id IS NULL AND tasks.book_id = @book_id LIMIT 1; This is what I Have done in rails with the MetaWhere plugin book.tasks.joins(:users.outer).where(:users => {:id => nil}) but I cant figure out how to get the current user there too, Thanks for any help!

• Rails with DB2 and multiple schemas

  I have a 'legacy' DB2 database that has many other applications and users. Trying to experiment with a rails app. Got everything working great with the ibm_db driver. Problem is that I have some tables like schema1.products, schema1.sales and other tables like schema2.employees and schema2.payroll. In the ibm_db adapter connection, I specify a schema, like schema1 or schema2, and I can work within that one schema, but I need to be able to easily (and transparently) reference both schemas basically interchangeably. I don't want to break the other apps, and the SQL I would normally write against DB2 doesn't have any of these restrictions (schemas can be mixed in SQL against DB2 without any trouble at all). I would like to just specify table names as "schema1.products" for example and be done with it, but that doesn't seem to jive with the "rails way" of going about it. Suggestions?

• Rails: Settingslogic accessible to users?

  I have my app configured with Settingslogic, which I love. My question is how to I make a page on my Rails app where Administrators can make changes to the settings specified in config/settings.yml?? I assume said page would have to read and display appropriate form fields for all the values in the YAML file, then save those values back to config/settings.yml?   Hi, I am working with rails 2.3 with netbeans 6.5.1 on vista. I want to install more plugins from Git in netbeans like shoulda, cucumber etc. I have these questions: 1) I do not have much knowledge of Git. Is it necessary to install Git to make use of the Git plugins in netbeans? Are gems and plugins dependant on each other? 2) In case Git is needed and I do install msysgit , for example I can use the command ruby script/plugin install http://github.com/thoughtbot/shoulda.git/ to install shoulda plugin.   I'm trying to use the jQuery UI Slider with my rails 3 app. I've downloaded a theme and put the css file in app/assets/stylesheet and I put all the images in app/assets/images. When I load a page with a slider, I get an error that it can't find an image: GET http://10.1.10.100:3000/assets/images/ui-bg_glass_45_0078ae_1x400.png 404 (Not Found) That file is in app/assets/images/ and the css file has been edited to point to ../images/<image> Is there something else I need to do to make a jQuery slider work with Rails 3? gist with the files: https://gist.github.com/2355571

  I have a User object, that is related to a Post object via two different association paths: Post --(has_many)-- comments --(belongs to)-- writer (of type User) Post --(belongs to)-- writer (of type User) Say the following hold: user1.name == "Bill" post1.comments[1].writer == user1 post1.writer == user1 Now when I retrieve the post1 and its comments from the database and I update post1.comments[1].writer like so: post1.comments[1].writer.name = "John" I would expect post1.writer to equal "John" too. But it doesn't! It still equals "Bill". So there seems to be some caching going on, but the kind I would not expect. I would expect Rails to be clever enough to load exactly one instance of the user with name "Bill"; instead is appears to load two individual ones: one for each association path. Can someone explain how this works exactly and how I am to handle these types of situations the "Rails way"?

• load search results into a div jquery and rails

  In my rails app I have a search bar where users can search other users. Currently when a User submits the search from, they're redirected to a "results" page. I want to load those results in a div on the same page..   Seems like most Rails applications have similar 'base' functionality. As such, it seems that there would be value in having pre-build Rails applications at various functionality points such as: basic User model with authentication using Authlogic #1 + openid integration #2 + authorization using declarative_authorization #3 + Administration module #4 + a Profile model Themes (useful stylesheets and such) Friendship model Geocoding ... In addition to the basic MVC stuff, these applications would include: testing harnesses seed data git support One could choose start from any of these functionality points. Other than the sample application that are available with the various gems/plugins, are there projects such as these? If not, I would certainly be willing to contribute what I have.

• 1-st level routes for multiple resources in Rails

  I have a simple SEO task. There's a City model and a Brand model, and I have to create 1st-level URLs for both (e.g. site.com/honda and site.com/boston). What's the preferred routing/controller combination to do this in Rails? I can only think of map.connect '/:id', :controller => 'catchall', :action => 'index' class CatchallController < ApplicationController def index if City.exists?(:slug => params[:id]) @city = City.find_by_slug!(params[:id]) render 'cities/show' else @brand = Brand.find_by_slug!(params[:id]) render 'brands/show' end end end but it seems to be very un-Rails to put such logic into the controller. (Obviously I need to make sure that the slugs don't overlap in the models, that's done).
