  • Logging Application Block doesn't add log entries to Event Viewer on machines other than that on whi

    I am using the Logging Application Block (of Microsoft Enterprise Library 5.0) to log exceptions in the Event Viewer that occur in my WPF XBAP application. However, exceptions are only being logged if the application is run on my machine (the machine it was built on). Any other machine it doesn't log anything. I've tried to find a reason why this might be occurring - I've tried setting requirePermission to false - but to no avail. Anyone any ideas on why this might be happening?

Something like this. catch (Exception exception) { Logger.Write(exception); } and then the settings in the configuration will pick up the Message and StackTrace property etc using customer listener. I would like to use Enterprise Library Logging Application Block. I'm sure someone must have done this already.

  • Batch file crashes when double clicked, but passes from command prompt

    I have a batch file that was crashing when executing from windows explorer. I opened a command prompt and navigated to the file, but when I executed it there it did not crash. I identified the line that was crashing.   • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 1: Why Build Smart Phone Apps

    This is part 1 in a series of post based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. Intro Most of us already carry smartphones. We play games on them. We keep up with what is going on with our friends and our favorite teams. We take pictures of our kids at their events. But the question is if that is all they are good for. Many companies have aspects of their business that lend themselves to being performed by mobile devices. Some of them lean toward larger device such as tablets, but many can be executed on smartphones. This and the following articles will discuss some of the possible applications of smartphone technology for businesses, the platforms that are available and the considerations you need to make when building them. I'll take a look at some specific scenarios and wrap up with a couple of capabilities that are just emerging that can be used in the future. Why Build Enterprise Smartphone Applications So what are some of the ways that you can leverage smartphone technology to gain efficiency in your business or a clients business. There are a few major areas that I have seen mobile platforms being an advantage to. Your mobile sales force is a key candidate for leveraging smartphone apps.  They can visit clients in their retail location and place orders on site. It is a more personal approach which can gain you customer loyalty.  A sales person may also gather information about the way a client does business or who their target market is. This allows them you to focus marketing information or build customized support for your customer. You may also have need to track physical inventory in a store. This is something that has historically been done with laser scanners, but with the camera capabilities in today's phones and tablets it is possible to use more general multi-purpose devices.  This can save costs on both hardware and telecommunication contracts. Delivery verification is another area that historically has been the domain of specialized devices but can now be accomplished with smartphones.  This also reduces costs because it is also used for communicating with the driver and other operations.  Add to that the navigation capability of smartphones and you can see how the return on investment increases. Executives are always on the go. They spend most of their time in meetings and yet they need access to decision making information at their finger tips. With a smartphone app they can get alerts when major sales are closed or critical accounting process are completed that may need their attention. They can also answer questions by instantly pulling up BI reports. I have often heard operations support people say that they need things like VPN and RDP from their phones. If they can also have notifications of outages or critical support requests they can be react to situations without needing to be tied to their desks.   • Why is the screen resolution different between Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions?

    I installed Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit edition on my Dell Precision M6400 with an nVidia Quadro Fx 2700M card and I see that even though the screen resolution is set to 1920 X 1200, its not the same as the Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on a second hard drive. Both OSes show that the screen resolution is set at 1920 X 1200 but Ultimate shows more pixels than Enterprise. I also reinstalled the display driver but in vain. Any ideas? TIA

  • Answers to Your Common Oracle Database Lifecycle Management Questions

    We recently ran a live webcast on Strategies for Managing Oracle Database's Lifecycle. There were tons of questions from our audience that we simply could not get to during the hour long presentation. Below are some of those questions along with their answers. Enjoy! Question: In the webcast the presenter talked about “gold” configuration standards, for those who want to use this technique, could you recommend a best practice to consider or follow? How do I get started? Answer:Gold configuration standardization is a quick and easy way to improve availability through consistency. Start by choosing a reference database and saving the configuration to the Oracle Enterprise Manager repository using the Save Configuration feature. Next create a comparison template using the Oracle provided template as a starting point and modify the ignored properties to eliminate expected differences in your environment. Finally create a comparison specification using the comparison template you created plus your saved gold configuration and schedule it to run on a regular basis. Don’t forget to fill in the email addresses of those you want to notify upon drift detection. Watch the database configuration management demo to learn more. Question: Can Oracle Lifecycle Management Pack for Database help with patching an Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) environment? Answer: Yes, Oracle Enterprise Manager supports both parallel and rolling patch application of Oracle Real Application Clusters. The use of rolling patching is recommended as there is no downtime involved. For more details watch this demo. Question: What are some of the things administrators can do to control configuration drift? Why is it important? Answer:Configuration drift is one of the main causes of instability and downtime of applications. Oracle Enterprise Manager makes it easy to manage and control drift using scheduled configuration comparisons combined with comparison templates. Question: Does Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Release 2 offer an incremental update feature for "gold" images? For instance, if the source binary has a higher PSU level, what is the best approach to update the existing "gold" image in the software library? Do you have to create a new image or can you just update the original one? Answer:Provisioning Profiles (Gold images) can contain the installation files and database configuration templates. Although it is possible to make some changes to the profile after creation (mainly to configuration), it is normally recommended to simply create a new profile after applying a patch to your reference database. Question: The webcast talked about enforcing in-house standards, does Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c offer verification of your databases and systems to those standards? For example, the initial "gold" image has been massively deployed over time, and there may be some changes to it. How can you do regular checks from Enterprise Manager to ensure the in-house standards are being enforced? Answer:There are really two methods to validate conformity to standards. The first method is to use gold standards which you compare other databases to report unwanted differences. This method uses a new comparison template technology which allows users to ignore known differences (i.e. SID, Start time, etc) which results in a report only showing important or non-conformant differences. This method is quick to setup and configure and recommended for those who want to get started validating compliance quickly. The second method leverages the new compliance framework which allows the creation of specific and robust validations. These compliance rules are grouped into standards which can be assigned to databases quickly and easily. Compliance rules allow for targeted and more sophisticated validation beyond the basic equals operation available in the comparison method. The compliance framework can be used to implement just about any internal or industry standard. The compliance results will track current and historic compliance scores at the overall and individual database targets. When the issue is resolved, the score is automatically affected. Compliance framework is the recommended long term solution for validating compliance using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c. Check out this demo on database compliance to learn more. Question: If you are using the integration between Oracle Enterprise Manager and My Oracle Support in an "offline" mode, how do you know if you have the latest My Oracle Support metadata? Answer:In Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Release 2, you now only need to download one zip file containing all of the metadata xmls files. There is no indication that the metadata has changed but you could run a checksum on the file and compare it to the previously downloaded version to see if it has changed. Question: What happens if a patch fails while administrators are applying it to a database or system? Answer:A large portion of Oracle Enterprise Manager's patch automation is the pre-requisite checks that happen to ensure the highest level of confidence the patch will successfully apply. It is recommended you test the patch in a non-production environment and save the patch plan as a template once successful so you can create new plans using the saved template. If you are using the recommended ‘out of place’ patching methodology, there is no urgency because the database is still running as the cloned Oracle home is being patched. Users can address the issue and restart the patch procedure at the point it left off. If you are using 'in place' method, you can address the issue and continue where the procedure left off. Question: Can Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c R2 compare configurations between more than one target at the same time? Answer:Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c can compare any number of target configurations at one time. This is the basis of many important use cases including Configuration Drift Management. These comparisons can also be scheduled on a regular basis and emails notification sent should any differences appear. To learn more about configuration search and compare watch this demo. Question: How is data comparison done since changes are taking place in a live production system? Answer:There are many things to keep in mind when using the data comparison feature (as part of the Change Management ability to compare table data). It was primarily intended to be used for maintaining consistency of important but relatively static data. For example, application seed data and application setup configuration. This data does not change often but is critical when testing an application to ensure results are consistent with production. It is not recommended to use data comparison on highly dynamic data like transactional tables or very large tables. Question: Which versions of Oracle Database can be monitored through Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c? Answer:Oracle Database versions: 9.2.0.8, 10.1.0.5, 10.2.0.4, 10.2.0.5, 11.1.0.7, 11.2.0.1, 11.2.0.2, 11.2.0.3.   • Unable to install ExchangeCdo with Outlook 2010

    We recently got the Blackberry Express Server for our small home business and linked it in with our Exchange 2010 server. All is well except for calendar syncing. From what I can tell I require the ExchangeCdo patch. Except when I go to install it, it errors saying I require Outlook 2007. I have Outlook 2010 on the server and have no real way of getting 2007 on instead. Any suggestions?

    BES 4.1.6 Blackberry 8300 (curve) Hi guys, I've noticed that handhelds will typically only retrieve the first few KB and then prompt the user to manually retrieve more (or auto-retrieve if they scroll down). The problem is that I have a BB app that needs to see the entire message all at once on the first initial time it's opened. But i need some more elaborated, because i have several Desktops and are in use by 2 or 3 users each one, so i want to make a class for copy a shortcut in his desktops. The computers are joined to a domain, so any user can log in any desktop, and his profile is created in every desktop. We don't want the users to download and install other applications, so we disable this by a BES policy (disable Third Party Software Downloads). But when we disable this, the application push does not work anymore. Does anybody know/have experience with making an exception for certain applications or an exception for applications that are provided by application push from the BES?     Looking for someone who has implemented an axway EMF recently. I'm about to implement an axway SM product for company wide email encryption. I current have an edge transport server and an exchange 2007 server. I want to route email like the follow: the edge picks up internet email to exchange and all out going email will go out the axway. I have two things to figure out: do I only have to build a new send connector on exchange to point to a smarthost (axway) and disable the send connector going to the transport edge server? and two The axway server has to route notifcations to people.     Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the BES epxress and small business edition is? From what I have read they are both identical in capabilities and also both have a 15 user limit. But the BES express edition is free and comes with 1 user license and SBE costs about £800 but comes with 5 user licenses. Buying a 5 user CAL pack costs about £350 (from what I have seen). So if there is no difference why would anyone buy the SBE when they could get the Express edition free and just add 5 more licenses for about £350? Is there any fundamental difference between express and SBE?

    I've an interesting problem that I thought was straightforward, but turns out I think I'm whistling down the wrong path. It has to do with (shudder) email. I thought I was done with needing to know about email guts ten years ago; I was wrong. Anyway. Simply put, I need to figure out how to relay outgoing email that is not targetted in our domain from our domain into a 'dropbox' in a DMZ, and the Other Guys can retrieve that email from their side of the DMZ and distribute it accordingly, even out to the public internet if need be. There will be no [un-established] traffic coming back to Our side from anywhere; any attempts to do so are dropped with malicious prejudice. Our side is postfix running on scilinux6.1. The DMZ boxes are redhat5.4. The Other Guys are M$ Exchange. The firewalls are set up such that data can go from Our Side downsec to the DMZ, but not upsec from the DMZ into Our Side. Same for the Other Guys. My first thinking was simply to set up postfix on a box in the DMZ and tell them to set up fetchmail or whatever the M$ equivalent is, but then I started remembering that postfix wants to actively relay email onwards, rather than hold it and wait for someone to 'reach in' and retrieve it. I'm not sure I've explained this well, but hopefully it's clear enough that someone can point me in the right direction. I seem to remember having done this before, but it was a looong time ago. thanks!
