• Any reason why I shouldn't use couchdb for message passing or realtime activity streams?

  While using ampq or xmpp (rabbitmq or ejabbered that could have couchdb as backends) seems like a good fit to deliver real time updates about friend state in a social gaming platform where updates are small but frequent, I can't help but think why wouldn't couchdb be a good platform to deliver such updates? The main advantage I could think of is its ability to filter updates based on friends and availability of changes api, which makes developing such an application and managing it (including replication) quite easy compared to ampq or xmpp where you have to think about how to manage the pubsub nodes and who is subscribed to them at any point in time. However, I can't help but think this is too good to be true, I can't find information on what couchdb's shortcomings are. Somehow, it feels like using MySQL for message passing which is why I am hesitant to using it. Anyone have any experience in using couchdb for such applications? would you recommend another platform to use?

• Data Usage Checker Tools

  Hey All, I am about to begin a project for a new client, and am worried about a few things concerning data usage on their internet plan. We're in an area where most of the major networks don't cover the area, and the ones that do, have very expensive plans, with very low data allowance per month. I need to develop an app, but part of the problem lies with checking database values every 30 seconds. It's pretty important that this check is happening every 30 seconds, as the database is actually updated all day everyday, approx. every 5seconds (apparently). Each row in the database consists of about a page full of text if you were to paste it into MS Word. So, are there any logical ways of minimizing data usage in my case, and also how am I able to see exactly how much data is used just to establish a connection to the database? Are there any tools for this kind of info? Thanks :)

  Hi WPF lovers, I want to display all the possible enum values as Radio buttons. I am using popular RadioButtonList style to display the radiobutton from my enum using DataProvider in a Listcontrol. I can get all the radio buttons but the text appear with the radio button is not user friendly. • Where are Wireless Profiles stored in Ubuntu [closed]

  Where does Ubuntu store profiles that allow it to remember the credentials to private wireless networks that it has previously authenticate to and used? I just replaced my Uncle's hard drive with a new one and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (he had Ubuntu 9.10 on his old hard drive. He is at my house right now, and I want him to be able to access his private wireless network when he gets home. Usually, when I upgrade Ubuntu, I have his /home directory on another partition, so his wireless profile to his own network persists. However, right now, I'm trying to figure out which .folder I need to copy from his /home/user folder on the old hard drive, to the new hard drive, so that he will be able to have wireless Internet when he gets home. Does anyone know with certainty, exactly which folder I need to copy to the new hard drive to achieve this?

• Solving the problem of finding parts which work well with each other

  Hi, I have a database of items. They are for cars and similar parts (eg cam/pistons) work better than others in different combinations (eg one product will work well with another, while another combination of 2 parts may not). There are so many possible permutations, what solutions apply to this problem? So far, I feel that these are possible approaches (Where I have question marks, something tells me these are solutions but I am not 100% confident they are). Neural networks (?) Collection-based approach (selection of parts in a collection for cam, and likewise for pistons in another collection, all work well with each other) Business rules engine (?)   I am working on a social site where users can block other users. Throughout the site --dozens of places, user information is displayed. For example, user comments, reply forms, online user list.. etc etc.. The problem is that given the high number of places user info is displayed, it's becoming very difficult to check each time if that user is blocked. For example: <g:each var="comment" in="${comments}"> <g:if test="!${loggedInUser.blockedUsers.find { it == comment.user}"> show comment </g:if> </g:each> Does Grails provide any functionality that would facilitate creating some kind of filter or intercepter where I could simply exclude blocked users when iterating lists, etc? If not, what would you suggest I do?

  I have been read a lot of articles to make a good design for my database so I can get the most recent updates for every single user by executing a - kind of - complex query then I send the data using ajax as a JSON to JS file that makes an appropriate edits for the records.   I have to develop a basic social network for an academic purpose; but I need some tips for the users management.. The users are subdivided into 3 groups with different privilege: admins,analysts and standards users. For every user should be stored into the database the following information: name,lastname,e-mail,age,password. I'm not quite sure how I should design the database between theese two solutions: 1)one table called 'users' with the 'role' attribute that explain what a user can do and what can't do, and the permissions are managed via php 2)every application user is a database user created with the query 'CREATE ROLE' (It's a postgres database) and he has permissions on some tables granted with the 'GRANT' statement You should take into account that the project is for a database exam.. thanks

  Hi, I found in the Android documentation how to turn Bluetooth discoverability mode on: Intent discoverableIntent = new Intent(BluetoothAdapter.ACTION_REQUEST_DISCOVERABLE); discoverableIntent.putExtra(BluetoothAdapter.EXTRA_DISCOVERABLE_DURATION, 300); startActivity(discoverableIntent); This will make the device discoverable for 300 seconds (documentation). My question is: how to turn discoverability OFF before this timeout occurs? I'd like to replicate the corresponding setting in Settings|Wireless and networks|Bluetooth settings applet, that allows discoverability to be turned on and off with a click. Any help? Thanks ;)

• Does TCP actually define 'TCP server' and 'TCP clients'? [closed]

  In the Wikipedia article, TCP communication is explained using the terms 'client' and 'server'. It also uses the word 'peers'. But TCP actually does not define "TCP clients" and "TCP servers" - In the RFC 675 document (SPECIFICATION OF INTERNET TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROGRAM), the word "client" never appears. The RFC explains that TCP is used to connect processes over ports (sockets), and that 'A pair of sockets form a CONNECTION which can be used to carry data in either direction [i.e. full duplex]. Calling the originating party the "client" seems to be common practice. But this client/server communication model is not always applicable to TCP communication. For example take peer-to-peer networks. Calling all processes which open a socket (and wait for incoming connections from peers) "TCP servers", sounds wrong to me. I would not call my uncle's telephone device a "Telephony server" if I dial his phone number and he picks up.

• Which PHP calendar will suit my needs? Or build my own?

  There are so many web based calendars out there that I'm not sure which will best suit my purposes. I want to create an events calendar, which I suppose looks and functions in much the same way as google calendar. But users shouldn't need to sign up for a gmail account or a google account. Users of my social network website should be able to create events in the calendar and share it with other friends in their "friend network". In month, year or day views, you can mouse hover events to see a bubble dialog that lists events in detail. People need to pay a monthly fee to use my website (not sure if this prevents me from using google apps). So is something like Google Calendar the way to go? Or are there other php/javascript calendars out there that already meet my needs? Or will it just save me more time to build my own?

And, I believe that might be interesting for people where I live (Internet is not developed - but the cellphone networks are much better). So here are my questions: Where can I find documentation for beginners on that matter (And most importantly) Am I gonna be able to take advantage of acquired knowledge in .NET framework (C#, MVC, JQuery, XHTML, ...)? Am I gonna need my laptop or a special device to develop applications? Am I gonna need Visual Studio? And so on... Bref, What are similarities/dissimilarities between developments for applications running in big machines and those running on mobile phones? Thanks for helping

• Possible to implement an IsViewPortVisible dependencyproperty for an item in an ItemsControl?

  I need to enable/disable spell checking in a richtextbox in an ItemsControl, based on whether the RichTextBox is visible in the ItemsControl's Scrollviewer. I think the route is to implement an IsViewPortVisible dependency property and wire an event handler for a changed event...   I have a small .NET WinForms application, and couple of linux servers, DEV and CL1,CL2..CLN (DEV is development server and CL* are servers which belons to our clients, they are in private networks and it's a kind of production servers) I want an update mechanism so that (1) i develop a new version and publish it to a DEV (2) users of DEV-server install latest version from DEV (3) users of CL2 (employees of client2) install stable version from CL-2 directly (4) application checks for updates using server it was installed from (so, if it was installed from CL-2, it should check CL-2 for updates) (5) i should be able to propogate the update to a selected CL-server (using just file copy & maybe sed; not republishing), if i want that (and if i don't, that CL-server will have an old version until manually i update it) I tried to use clickonce, but looks like it meets only first two requirements. What should i do?

  I am working on an application which requires matching of numbers from a scanned image file to database entry and update the database with the match result. Say I have image- employee1.jpg. This image will have two two handwritten entries - Employee number and the amount to be paid to the employee. I have to read the employee number from the image and query the database for the that number, update the employee with the amount to be paid as got from the image. Both the employee number and amount to be paid are written inside two boxes at a specified place on the image. Is there any way to automate this. Basically I want a solution in .net using c#. I know this can be done using artificial neural networks. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

• What would be my best MySQL Synchronization method?

  We're moving a social media service to be on separate data centers with global load balancing, as our other hosting provider's entire data center went down. Twice. This means that both websites need to be synchronized in some sense -- I'm less worried about the code of the pages, that's easy enough to sync, but they need to have the same database data. From my research on SO, it seems MySQL Replication is a good option, but the MySQL manual, for scaling out, says that its best when there are far more reads then there are writes/updates: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/replication-solutions-scaleout.html In our case, it's about equal. We're getting around 200-300 thousand requests a day right now, and we can grow rapidly. Every request is both a read and write request. What would be the best method or tool to handle this?

• C/C++ detect network type

  I need to write a win32 c/c++ application which will be able to determine whether the PC it's running on is connected to one of 2 networks. The first network is the company LAN (which has no internet connection) and the second network is a standalone switch with a single PC connected to it (the PC that the program is running on). I'm pretty new to network programming but so far I have tried testing to see if a network drive which is held on our LAN can be mapped. This works fine if the PC is connected to the LAN, the drive mapping succeeds so so LAN detection is successful. However, if the PC is connected to the switch, this results in a VERY long timeout which is not a suitable as it will delay the program so much as to make it unusable. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions? I'm using c/c++ in VS 6.0

• Is it better to store user text (such as a blog entry or private messages) in the database or as flat files?

  I'm building a social networking type site that will be storing large chunks of text that's entered by users, such as blog entries and private messages. As such, these will be entered once, with minimal revisions, but many reads by multiple users over time. I'm using MySQL, by the way. My concerns are: Storing large blocks of text on the database will fill the database to capacity eventually. I read somewhere that storing user text in flat files is a security risk? (The filenames will be generated dynamically by the PHP, not by the user.) Storing them as text files may cause them to become out of sync if I ever have to reinitialize the database and restore it from backups. What are all your thoughts and advice, pros and cons?

  how can i get know when user online and offline. when one user log in to my site. i set a script to change database table field of that user, as a boolean to indicates users online states. but my problem is if he/she leaved my site without clicking the log-out button, then my script does not work and database show he/she as a online user. please give me any sugestion to fix this. i have no idea what to do! i check some answers on this topic, but most of says asnwer lie this -- if last activity time is less than now+15 minutes then user is online, offline otherwise. but i have seen some social networking sites shows that we have gone offline, just we close the browser. how they do that ?

  I'm writing a Settlers of Catan clone for a class. One of the extra credit features is automatically determining which player has the longest road. I've thought about it, and it seems like some slight variation on depth-first search could work, but I'm having trouble figuring out what to do with cycle detection, how to handle the joining of a player's two initial road networks, and a few other minutiae. How could I do this algorithmically? • How do search engines see dynamic profiles?

  Recently search engines have been able to page dynamic content on social networking sites. I would like to understand how this is done. Are there static pages created by a site like Facebook that update semi frequently. Does Google attempt to store every possible user name? As I understand it, a page like www.facebook.com/username, is not an actual file stored on disk but is shorthand for a query like: select username from users and display the information on the page. How does Google know about every user, this gets even more complicated when things like tweets are involved.

• More HTTP verbs with AS3?

  I'm developing a social game in Flash with a team of developers. Our server-side guy has developed a really slick RESTful API for the Flash client to talk to. A lot of the client-server interactions involve adding and removing objects from a persistent world, so the API makes extensive use of the PUT and DELETE verbs. The problem is, the URLRequest object in AS3 only supports the GET and POST verbs. We're on a strict schedule, and we'd really rather not have to rewrite the whole API to just use GET and POST. Has anyone come up with a good way to get Flash to send other verbs?
