• Normalise this Table?

  Hello all, I am creating a social bookmarking app. I am having a re-thought of the DB design in the middle of development. Should I normalise the bookmarks table and remove the tag columns that I have into a separate table. I have 10 tags per bookmark and therefore 10 columns per record (per bookmark). It seems to me that breaking the table into two would just mean I would have to do a join but the way I currently have it, its a straight select - but the table doesn't feel right...? Thanks all

• Creating a local CDMA or GSM network?

  I am developing a number of different mobile applications for a number of different mobile devices and I want to quickly test in a local development environment. I was wondering if it is possible (with some sort of hardware) to set up a local desktop CDMA / GSM base station for testing devices over a local personal cellular network. The range does not have to be very far. The alternative is purchasing a SIM card and plans for various carriers but not all carriers/network types are available in our area. I'm sure I had seen some sort of desktop device that would let you setup local networks for development/testing purposes but can't seem to find it. Thanks.

• How can I enable/disable network connection options programmatically

  When I open the properties on a network connnection on windows, I see this dialog: In this dialog, in the check-listbox I can enable or disable options like "File or printer sharing", "client for microsoft networks" or network filter drivers. My question is: How can I enable/disable these options programatically? I didn't find anything that looks like this in the WMI documentation and I couldn't find any other Win32 API for this. I would prefer a C Win32 API or WMI interface, but a solution using any programming language is welcome. The question is language-agnostic.

  Dear Network Gurus Before saying anything let me tell you that i am not well educated int networks related subjects. I am a software developer and I have written and exposed a Service on HTTPS at port 8000. Now i want to know that if there is any kind of software that can help me to trace if there is any kind of port blocking from one site to my service location with information of blocker host. I have tried couple of Tracerout software like wintrace but all these uses ICMP protocols and there is no option to provide port number in them. And moreover i like to ad an exception in Firewall for incoming ICMP protocal in windows server 2003 windows firewall but i can't see anyoption to ad protocol in exception instead there are only options to ad a program or ad a port of udp or tcp. Please help Regards

• How do you parse text in Ruby on Rails and add classes to specific parts of it?

  I am a Rails novice and I'm creating an application that I'd love some help on. The app is for social reading. It enables a user to highlight a passage from a text then have that passage saved and bolded into the view for later reading by anyone else. I have no problem creating an if statement on whether a certain string of text is in a passage but how do I add a class to that string and have a group of these passages absorbed back into the view. Any strategic advice would be greatly appreciated.

  hello, i run a social networking site written in asp.net and would like to open it to developers using the OpenSocial APIs. I have read information on opensocial.org as well as google's opensocial page and have a basic idea what it takes but still there is a lot of info missing to even get started. I know i gotta provide RESTful API as well as JavaScript API, authenticating using OAuth methods. Does my container has to provide all 3: JSON, XML, and AtomPub representations of data? I found Shindig but it runs under Apache, i need something for IIS. Are there any libraries that i could use as a base for my APIs to save time? Is it even recommended to write the entire container from scratch? thanks

• How do I trigger specific parts of a storyboard in WPF?

  I have several grids in my window. I have created a storyboard that moves them left by x pixels when a button is clicked. I want to make it so that when the button is clicked again those grids move another x pixels, however I'm unable to find out how to do this as it's not a common task on tutorials. I have tried creating a second storyboard to do this, however that won't work as then the grids will be back at their starting positions. One solution might be to create a third set of keyframes after the first two sets, and somehow pause the animation when it gets there, and resumes it again when the button is clicked, however I'm not sure how to pause a storyboard when it reaches a keyframe. This would also make reversing the grids difficult (using this approach http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/wpf/thread/ac54de71-f750-4940-91a2-231810308727/), as I'd like to make another button make the grids go the other way.

• Why do I get HTTP Code 414 on one network but not another?

  I have an otherwise working iPhone program. A recent change means that it generates some very long URLs (over 4000 characters sometimes) which I know isn't a great idea and I know how to fix -- that's not what I'm asking here. The curious thing is that when I make the connection using a 3G network (Vodafone UK) I get this HTTP "414 Request-URI Too Long" error but when I connect using my local WiFi connection it works just fine. Why would I get different results using different types of network? Could they be routing requests to different servers depending on where the connection originates? Or is there something else at stake here? The corollary questions relate to how common this is. Is it likely to happen whenever I use a cell network or just some networks?

  I have to send sensitive information (name, address, social security number etc.) collected from a website, that has been entered by a user, to an e-mail address. What is the best course of action to make the information secure and easy to extract on the receiver side? Edit: I will be using ASP.NET for the website, not sure what it has for capabilities on this matter. Edit: If I decide to store the information in a database and just send a mail when a new entry has been made, would this be better? And create some secure way to dump the information instead.

• Script.PostDeployment.sql not executing in CI build VS 2010

  I have a database project in VS 2010 (SQL 2008). The local Deploy Solution action works and executes all of the SQL in the Script.PostDeployment.sql file. When I check changes in, the Build Definition for the continuous integration server executes. The database is deployed into the CI environment, but the PostDeployment script doesn't get executed. I wasn't able to find anything specific to this particular scenario. I also expect I'll need to provide additional information unless this is a trivial problem that I missed somewhere. Additional Information: The build is executing vsdbcmd.exe to deploy. The deployment manifest references the PostDeployment.sql file and it's present in the path with the rest of the files.   Hi all. I'm trying to get the green box that appears on the second click of a tri-state checkbox to be red, and also to fill up the box. • Where can I find the transaction protocol used by Automated Teller Machines?

  I'm doing a grad-school software engineering project and I'm looking for the protocol that governs communications between ATMs and bank networks. I've been googling for quite a while now, and though I'm finding all sorts of interesting information about ATMs, I'm surprised to find that there seems to be no industry standard for high-level communications. I'm not talking about 3DES or low-level transmission protocols, but something along the lines of an Interface Control Document; something that governs the sequence of events for various transactions: verify credentials, withdrawal, check balance, etc. Any ideas? Does anything like this even exist? I can't believe that after all this time the banks and ATM manufacturers are still just making this up as they go. A shorter question: if I wanted to go into the ATM software manufacturing business, where would I start looking for standards?

• Entity Framework 4.0 Unit Testing

  Hi, I've implemented unit testing along the lines of this article with a fake object context and IObjectSet with POCO in EF4. http://blogs.msdn.com/adonet/archive/2009/12/17/test-driven-development-walkthrough-with-the-entity-framework-4-0.aspx But I'm unsure how to implement a couple of methods on my fake object context for testing. I have CreateQuery and ExecuteFunction methods on my object context interface so that I can execute ESQL and Stored Procedures but I cant (easily) implement them in my fake object context. An alternative would be to use a test double of my repository instead of a double of my object context as suggested here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/adonetefx/thread/c4921443-e8a3-4414-92dd-eba1480a07ad/ But this would mean my real repository isnt being tested and would seem to just bypass the issue. Can anyone offer any recommendations?

• Should I uniform different API calls to a single format before caching?

  The problem is that I am recreating the social media widget/icons on http://about.me/bluedaniel (thats me). Anyhow there can be up to 6 or 7 different API calls on the page and obviously I am caching them, at the moment with Memcached. The question is, as they arrive in various formats and sizes (fb-json, linkedin-xml, wordpress-rss etc), should I universally format/convert them before storing it in the cache. At present I have recreated the html widget and then stored that, but I worry about saving huge blocks of html in the cache as it doesn't seem that smart.

  I have a data view webpart of some other list on my Dispform.aspx page. I have added edit and create new links in it. Create new item link is workin fine but when I m clicking on edit, its showing me error: No item exist at http:....listname/Dispform.aspx?ID=1&Source=http://...listname/Allitems.aspx. It may have been deleted or renamed by other user. I found this post related to it. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointcustomization/thread/e368d7c7-8878-4f74-a62b-9ebad50c6b9a But now in my case the problem is I don't wanna customize Allitems.aspx, and what I have understood in the above post guys have suggested that to change the query string.I can only customize DispForm.aspx. Now the query string which is passing by default is ID=@ID from Allitems.aspx to DispForm.aspx...and I have to use this ID query string variable in my parameter if I m passing it on to the next page.   I'm a computer science student and for this years project, I need to create and apply a Genetic Algorithm to something. I think Neural Networks would be a good thing to apply it to, but I'm having trouble understanding them. I fully understand the concepts but none of the websites out there really explain the following which is blocking my understanding: How the decision is made for how many nodes there are. • Win XP cannot connect (or see) my wifi network, but can see others

  since yesterday I have a strange wifi problem with my pc. I have a wireless linksys router setup that worked fine for many months, now since yesterday my pc won't connect to the wifi signal anymore. The strange thing is, my macbook pro still connects fine. SSID is broadcasting, but my windows XP doens't see it, I have all signal modes set to "auto". Windows XP sees all my neighbours wifi networks, so the wifi card isn't broken or anything. Any idea what can be wrong here?

Twitter claims it uses FlockDB for the following: Twitter runs FlockDB on a large cluster of machines. we use it to store social graphs (who follows whom, who blocks whom) and secondary indices at twitter. At first glance, setup and trying it doesn't look straight forward. Have anyone already used it / setup this? If so, please answer the following general queries. What kind of applications is it better suited for? (Twitter claims it is simple and very rough, it remains to see what it meant though) How is FlockDB better than other graph db / noSQL db. Have you setup FlockDB, used it for a application? Early advices any? Note: I am evaluating the FlockDB and other graph databases mainly for learning them. • Syncing SQL Server 2008 Databases over HTTP using WCF & Sync Framework

  I've tried to get a solution for the above said question from MSDN Social and other resources from Microsoft. I was specifically looking for offline scenarios where client come online only to fetch updates from the Server. There are plenty of articles on Sync covering Sql CE but MSFT team seems to be ignoring questions from the community on Syncing with Sql Express clients. There is no standard provider for Sql Express client yet, and Sql 2008 change tracking is not supported in the latest release too. Since Sql Replication is an expensive alternative, I have to go with Sync Framework. Have anyone here in SO worked with Sync Framework, syncing through WCF endpoints? Please share code samples or sample projects.
