• Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

  Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. Also, the program is also trying to create connections to 91.205.127.63, which is also from Russia. • Is there a Unix/Linux platform equivalent to Telligent Community?

  Telligent Community combines blogs, wikis, forums, and file-sharing capabilities into a single product with single sign-on, using all Microsoft technologies. Is there an equivalent offering that runs on Unix/Linux? Or would I have to pick and choose individual product offerings and figure out another option for single sign-on across them? Are there plug-ins for something like WordPress or MovableType that might add the necessary functionality? A friend of mine is looking to add a "members-only" area to her company's website, and since they're hosted on Dreamhost (and can't afford StackExchange pricing yet), I'm trying to find other options for them.

• Windows Installer using usb drive for temp purposes

  When installing apps that are built around Windows Installer, it would appear that it often uses my external usb hard disk (when it's connected) as the temp location while it expands and installs the application (creates a folder off the root with a guid name). Is there anyway to change this so it always defaults to a specific drive? This appears to be the case on Windows Vista and 7, not sure about previous releases. EDIT: Current environment variables look like this: TEMP=C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Temp TMP=C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Temp EDIT: I have a funny suspicion that it's using the drive with the largest available free space.

• mappoint 2013 randomly crashes on import

  We are sending routes to Mappoint 2013 from our application using an access database. It seems to happen with Mappoint 2010 and 2011 also. It doesn't happen on all of our clients either and it happens randomly on those who it does happen.   Hi, in school I have written many programs for 8051 compatible CPU. But I never actually knew how our "debug" sets worked. I mean, we test our programs in special sets, which actually allow you to very simply load program to CPU via PC serial port. But I thing you know this musch more better than I. But how it works? I mean, I know there is chip which adjusts signal level from PC serial port to TTL logic, and than connected to serial line of 8051. But thats all I know. Actually even my teacher doesen´t know how it works, since school bought it all. So, I suspect there is some program already running in the 8051 which handles communication and stores your program into memory, am I right? But, how can you make 8051 to process instructions from different location than ROM? Becouse if I am right, you cannot write into ROM memory by any instruction, as well as 8051 can only read instructions from ROM?

• MSI Installer error 2203; how to force permissions on installer directory?

Feel free to let me know where it best belongs.] Hi all, I'll try to bullet-point to keep it short: Background / Issue Trying to install ASP.NET MVC 3 RC on my Windows 7 machine. Uninstalled other versions of MVC (2 and 3 Beta 1). Ran the installer -- got a generic error, 2203. Log files said that it was a permissions error on C:\Windows\Installer. Checked C:\Windows\Installer -- sure enough, it's marked as read-only. I un-checked "Read-Only" in the folder properties and applied. It appears to open the dialog and apply to all files. However, when clicking properties again, the read-only box is backed to checked. Checked the security tab of the folder -- both system and the Administrators group have full access. I checked ownership -- the Administrators group is listed as an owner. Verified that I'm in the system as an Administrator (in fact, the only account in the Administrators group besides Administrator). So, what gives? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

  I've got speakers (audio in) and headphones (USB headset with it's own soundcard) connected to my desktop computer. Under Windows 7, I can right-click the Audio Mixer and select Playback Devices and toggle between my these devices. Is there an easier way, perhaps a keyboard shortcut, that would make it easier to toggle? I'm working in an shared space were sometimes I want headphones to avoid annoying other people, but at other times speakers are OK. I want to be able to toggle quickly. In an ideal world, the solution to my question would work in Vista too.

• Windows Boot Manager, linking a 'device' to boot linux

  I'm attempting to boot linux on a UEFI-GPT machine with a Windows Boot Manager (WBM). So far I have installed Archlinux (Arch) with Grub. The grubx64.efi is successfully on my windows boot partition and I can see the option to use it in UEFI-BIOS, selecting this loads grub and I'm able to get into Arch fine. I have noticed that in the Windows Boot Manager, selecting from the splash screen, 'Change defaults or choose other options' 'Choose other options' 'Use a device', shows the boot options as in UEFI-BIOS, in my case grub shows as 'Linux'. Selecting 'Linux' reboots the computer and loads grub then Arch. Is there anyway to use this entry for the device 'Linux' to show directly on the WBM splash screen under the entry for Windows 8.1? Ideally i'd like the 'Arch Linux' to link to the 'Linux' device. Guidance with bcdedit appreciated, thanks in advance.

  Hi I am trying to stream a video from my TorrentFlux-b4rt server. I tried multiple media players, none work. Only VLC was able to produce an error message: input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'mms://...:8080/'. Check the log for details. I have tried multiple computers on different networks and all have the same issue. I am using Windows 7 to play the videos, and the server is Torrentflux-b4rt 1.0-beta2 with ubuntu 9.10. Thank you.

• Windows 7: Touch gestures in IE not working without explorer.exe being run once

  Details: Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7 Professional, running on a HP TouchSmart (touch screen PC). It is going to be a kiosk PC (running a custom GUI for displaying websites). Scenario 1: When running Internet Explorer as a normal program in Windows 7, touch functions work perfectly. I can scroll the website by dragging it with my finger, I can pinch zoom and I can touch-and-hold right click. I now change the default shell in Windows to Internet Explorer (ie. IE starts instead of explorer.exe). Internet Explorer of course starts up when logging in. However, touch functions are reduced to basic clicking (no dragging, no pinch zooming, no touch-and-hold right click). Then I manually start explorer.exe, and the touch functions work again! And here is the weird part: When I kill explorer.exe, the touch functions keeps working - even if I close IE and start a new instance. Scenario 2: The exact same, but instead of changing the default shell to Internet Explorer, I change it to my own program, which uses an embedded Internet Explorer ("WebBrowser"). Same thing happens. What I've tried: Autorun programs: When explorer.exe launches, it launches all the autorun programs. There are no relevant programs being run by explorer, but just in case, I have manually started all the autorun programs, so that it is identical (but without explorer.exe) to a normal login. It still does not work (until I launch explorer.exe). Specifically TabTip.exe, TabTip32.exe and wisptis.exe are all running. All services are also started. To sum it up Running explorer.exe once changes something in the touch capabilities of Internet Explorer. It doesn't matter if explorer.exe is running - as long as it has been run once. Does anyone know what causes this behavior? Or how I can circumvent it neatly? Thanks!

• Copy Windows 7 environment running on external drive to a new HDD partition on a Mac?

  My PC has just given up on me. It's getting a bit old so I took the HDD out and bought a Mac. I've put the PC's HDD into an enclosure, plugged it into the Mac and dragged across most of my files. I've got a couple of programs that are PC-only that I have to run from time to time, so I'd like to make a partition on the Mac and have Windows 7 installed there. I know how to set up a clean version of Windows in Boot Camp. Is there an easy way to copy over the environment on the HDD to the Mac's partition? I don't really need all the stuff on the PC, just the operating system. Is there a better way to do this other than having to deactivate Windows, then reactivate it on the Mac? I have a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista, thus I have an upgrade disc, not the full disc.

I have tried making it an account called Xbox and this works fine but the Xbox account appears on the login page for Windows.   I have recently got a Mac mini to do IPhone Dev on (like many others) and I am using the excellent Synergy to share one keyboard and mouse with 2 machines and 2 monitors. Everything is lovely and it works a treat. I got used to using the mac, and the alt key works like command button on the mac however one thing I cant figure out is the End key. I use this a lot on windows when wanting to jump to the end of a line of text, however if I press it over synergy on my mac it jumps to the end of the page. Anyone know the key combination I need to get what I want?

• Windows 7 search doesn’t find text strings

  I’m not able to find any text strings starting not from the beginning of word in filename or in file content using Windows 7 search. My Windows 7 search configuration: Let’s say I’m searching for a documents containing word “content”. I’m able to find those documents when searching for “content”, “conte”, “con” (as long as the string includes the beginning of the word). "content" "con" But if I search for “ontent”, “tent” or any other combination that doesn’t include the beginning of the word, Windows search won't find it. I've tried other indexing/searching software such as Copernic Desktop search, Google desktop search. Those programs also weren’t able to find part of the word starting from the middle of the word. For instance, it finds “conte”, but doesn’t find “onte”. Finds “conte” Doesn’t find “onte” I got the same problem using Copernic desktop search. On the other hand, when I use non-indexing content search software such as Agent Ransack or FileSeek, I get the same results when searching for “conte” or “onte”: “conte” “onte” Why do all pre-indexing content search applications (Windows search, Google desktop, Copernic desktop search) fail to search for a string inside the words? Why do non-indexing applications find text strings wherever they are: in the beginning, middle or end of the word? I’ve tried wildcards and other constructions with no luck. *onte onte “onte” content:onte content:onte content:~onte All these searched doesn’t find the word “content”. How can I make Windows search find strings from any part of words? Could you try these searches and see if they work for you? Or is this normal behavior? Thank you. • Command line DVD to ISO ripper

  I have an old XBOX with XBMC installed and I want to rip my dvd collection to my home server as ISO files so that I can watch them over the network. My server is headless (no monitor), so I need the software to run on Solaris, Linux or OpenBSD without X11 running. Does such a magical tool exist? I've seen vobcopy, but does that only work on VOBs? Since XBMC supports DVD menus and everything as though it was a straight disc, I'd rather have my backup work exactly as it does without needing my DVD.

• Poor home office network performance and cannot figure out where the issue is

The Issue The breakdown here is at item 5. No matter what I do I cannot have a switch at 5 and have to run everything wireless regardless of router. Issues related to using a switch (point 5 above) SpeedTest is good. Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate at all. Usually cannot ping other devices even on the same switch although, when able, ping times are good. Eventual lose of connectivity and can "sometimes" be restored by unplugging everything for several days, not minutes or hours but we're talking a week if at all. Directly connect to computer gives good internet connection however throughput to other devices connected to firewall is at best horrible. Yet printing doesn't seem to be an issue as long as they are connected via wireless. I have to force the RV220W to 1000Mb on the respective port if using a Gig Switch Issues related to using wireless in place of a switch (point 5 above) Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate. SpeedTest is good. Bottom line Internet speeds are awesome. By the way, Comcast went WAY above and beyond to make sure it was not them. They rewired EVERYTHING which did solve internet drops. Computer to computer connections are garbage Cannot get switch at 5 to work, yet other at 4 has never had an issue. Direct connection, bypass switch, is good for DHCP and internet. DNS must be on server, not firewall. Cisco insists its my switches but as you can see I have used four and two different cables with the same result. My gut feeling is something is happening with routing. But I'm not smart enough to know that answer. I run a lot of VM's at 5-c-3, could that cause it? What's different compared to my previous house is I have introduced Gigabit hardware (firewall/switches/computers). Some of my computers might have IPv6 turned on if I haven't turned it off already. I'm truly at a loss and hope anyone has some crazy idea how to solve this. Bottom line, I need a switch in my office behind the firewall. I've changed everything. The real crux is I will find a working solution and, again, after days it will stop working. So this means I cannot isolate if its a computer since I have to use them. Oh and a solution is not throwing more money at this. I'm well into $1k already. Yah, lame.

• Serial port game controller (racing pedals)

  I have an old madCatz racing wheel for the playstation 2. The gas and brake pedals are connected to the wheel by a serial port. I just bought a usb racing wheel for the PC but it lacks pedals so I wanted to see if I could get these old madCatz working. I just installed the serial port in my motherboard, but now I have a problem with software. Nothing will recognize the pedal. I was wondering if there are any programs or drivers out there that will allow me to set the pedals up to work. Any advice would be appreciated!
