• MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed one of the applications (Appcelerator Titanium). Didn't seem to help. • Windows does not recognize DVDs inserted into Blu-ray drive

  I am having a problem with a Blu-ray drive I have in my PC. Its a Blu-ray reader drive and it reads and writes CDs and DVDs. My drive has been working great for about a year now, but for some reason now, when I insert a DVD, Windows 7 doesn't recognize that there is a disc in the drive. I have to eject the disc and insert it again. I sometimes have to do this like 30 times before it "catches" and Windows 7 recognizes the disc. My discs are not scratched up. It does it even with brand new discs. I've tried about 10 different DVDs and the same problem happens. One thing that is weird though is that the problem does not seem to happen when I insert Blu-ray discs. The problem only happens with DVD discs. I tried running a drive lens cleaner. Same issue. Any suggestions?

• How do I get more information on a potential network freeloader?

  I have a home network set up, complete with a relatively good password. I'm in Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and have been noticing, on occasion, a computer showing up in my Finder's Shared section, that is not one of my own (the "pe-xpjalle" box pictured below). He has a tendency to come and go. How can I figure out his MAC address or something, so I can block him? I checked my "Logs and Statistics" in the Airport Utility, and didn't see that computer under DHCP clients. I'd rather not change my password, since I have quite a few devices I'd have to update. Is there any other reason he's show up on my network besides having guessed my password? Update: I fixed the Dropbox URL above (how embarrassing, I'm new to Dropbox. Thanks for the heads up, Doug.) Update 2: I tried clicking on "Connect as..." just for the hell of it, and got the dialog below. Now I have even less an idea what's going on than before. I don't have Parallels of VMware running, just the following: Transmission, NetNewsWire, Mail, Things, Safari, iTunes, Photoshop, Pages, Yojimbo, Preferences, AppleScript Editor, Software Update, Airport Utility, and Terminal. I don't think any of those create a virtual network machine, right? And no VMware machine of mine has ever had a name resembling "pe-xpjalle". Update 3: I just changed my passwords on both my N- and G-only networks, and I'm still seeing this, so I highly doubt that it's someone who's figured out my password (twice now). I'm really stumped.

• User Profile cannot be loaded - Windows 7

  After uninstalling an HP Vector Mouse driver, then rebooting, when Windows tries to auto log me in, i get an error message saying tyhe following: The User Profile Service failed the Login. User Profile cannot be loaded. Due to the fact that it is the only account on this PC, I cannot even go into another account. I rebooted the machine several times, before going into Safe Mode with Networking. For some reason, I cannot create a new account whilst in safe mode (I think it is to do with UAC, nothing with UAC is clickable). Thus, I am stuck. I cannot get into my account, nor can I create a new one to copy files over to. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Ryan EDIT: System Restore was, for some reason turned off. Whenever people send invitations from Apple Mail to a Windows/Outlook machine, the invitations are garbled and look nothing like the nicely formatted invitations that Outlook people are used to. We also have no tools to view shared calendars, so we can choose mutually open time slots, and other useful calendar features that Outlook has and Apple Mail seems not to. So is there a plugin or third party program that will give Apple Mail the nice calendar features of Outlook? (By the way, I've looked into actually buying Outlook for Mac, and the pricing is kind of prohibitive, because you MUST buy the whole Office Suite, which we already have, there's no upgrade path, and there's no volume discounting.)

The second internal drive is setup as a mounted volume as C:\Archives Clicking computer icon in windows explorer, it only shows capacity stats for C: and Not C:\Archives Also, the usage stats that do show for C: show to be 100% capacity red - yet the system runs fine. No warnings. Can someone explain this? I do have a lot of stuff on the c: drive, but I'm sure its not 1.5 TB worth and C:\Archives hardly has anything it. Thanks! Troy

• External Hard Drive Won't Mount - MAC OSX

  I have a Western Digital hard drive that's about 4 or 5 years old. It's 500 GB, USB. I use it to backup my Mac every so often. I had it partitioned: 1 side for full backups, and the other side for general storage of music, installers, etc. I decided to get rid of the partition today and dump all the data. So I opened disk utility, and hit 'erase'. It started thinking and then disk utility crashed. After the crash, the hard drive won't mount, however disk utility still sees the drive, but not the individual volume within. I tried booting up Disk Warrior and no luck there either. It has the drive as an "unknown drive". When I hit rebuild, it goes through all it steps and then stops cause of this error: The drive "unknown" is severely damaged and DiskWarrior is unable to determine its case sensitivity What can I do at this point? There isn't any physical damage to the drive. Never been dropped or anything.

  i'm looking into which ISP i should go with at the place i'm moving into, one ISP which i have been told good things about has data limits (which when breached will drop your speed to dial-up speed) but multiple memberships which, apart from the cheapest membership, have the same data limits (the cheapest has a 10GB data limit) in their fine print, they say that each different membership has different port speeds, one particular part jumps out at me These speeds are the NBN (National Broadband Network) port speed and not the actual Internet data speed which will vary based on numerous factors including destination you are reaching, your network equipment, network congestion etc. i plan to use the net to download DLC and patch updates for games (particular the insanely large update for the Wii U) and games from Steam (if i find any good one other than this one JRPG) and downloading development resources from free sites like Deposit Files and Mediafire since one membership with a 1000GB data limit is $145 with the port speed being 12Mbps/1Mbps (cheapest) while another with the same limit is $190 with the port speed of 100Mbps/40Mbps (expensive) i am wondering how i can tell what the speed coming from site is since i don't want to be wasting money on speed that makes no difference (unlike memory which i rather have to spare) NOTE: the speeds are for a fiber optic network which where my new place is can only connect via fixed wireless which i may not be able to get with this ISP but if i can get this network then good NOTE 2: most of the resources i get from Deposit Files are always about 200 MB or less, if a resource pack is greater then it's split into multiple archives (like .7z.part) while Mediafire i have to see one bigger than 150MB NOTE 3: one update patch for a PS3 game is close to 4 GB (Disgaea 4) which i need to get access to the DLC and on the weekend i downloaded 5 GB for the Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta for the PS3 which took almost 5 hours

I'm getting a mysterious "Code 1" error on both updates, an error for which I'm having difficulty finding a solution.   We have one PC (Windows XP SP3) that we can not log onto using a Remote Desktop session. Logging on to the PC directly (sitting in front of it using the connected keyboard and monitor) work fine. From a second PC (tried a number of different ones but all Windows XP SP3) I run 'mstsc' and type in PC name to connect to. This shows the login box which we can enter the correct login details and click OK. Within a few second we get an error: Title: Fatal Error (Error Code:5) Error: Your Remote Desktop session is about to end. This computer might be low on virtual memory. Close your other programs, and then try connecting to the remote computer again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support. None of the computers we are using are low on memory (2Gb+) and we let windows manage the virtual memory side of things. We do not see this with any other PC and do use Remote Desktop in meeting rooms to connect to user PCs with no problems.

  Time Warner Cable/ Road Runner router shows up some times on the network list on Mac OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard. It makes a spotty appearence on the list. The router is a SMC Networks Model # SMC8014WG-SI. The default gateway numbers all do not work. 192.168.0.1 192.168.1.1 192.168.2.1 10.10.10.1 What IP adress am I looking for here to log in to the router to fix the issue?

• How to transition to Comcast with static IP address

  I have my own email server in my house, on a static IP address. I have had business DSL for over a decade, but I also now have Comcast business Internet. I want to transition from the DSL to the Comcast, and I have some questions. I have a domain name, my own mail server, and a firewall (a PC with two network interfaces, running Devil-Linux). I need to make sure I understand how to set up the Comcast cable box, and how to set up my firewall. First, do I need to change any settings in the cable box? Currently I have only used the cable box by plugging in a laptop, with the laptop doing DHCP. I think I can leave the box alone but I would like to make sure. Second, I'm not sure I understand the instructions Comcast gave me for setting up the firewall. My DSL provider gave me the following information: static IP address, net mask, gateway, and two DNS servers. Comcast gave me: static IP address, routable static IP address, net mask, and two DNS servers, and told me to put the "static IP address" as the "gateway" on the firewall. Is this just Comcast-speak here? Does "routable static IP address" mean the same thing as "static IP address" in my DSL setup, the end-point address that I should publish in the DNS MX records for my email server? Or should I publish the "static IP address", and Comcast will then route all its traffic over the cable box? My plan is: first, I'm going to configure another firewall, so I have one firewall for the DSL and one for the Comcast (rather than madly editing settings to switch back and forth). Then I will publish the new Comcast static IP address as a backup email server address in the DNS MX records, wait a while to let it propagate, and then switch my home over from the DSL to the Comcast. Then I'll change DNS to make that the primary mail address and the DSL the secondary, let that go a while and make sure it seems reliable. Then I'll remove the DSL from the DNS MX records completely, and finally shut down the DSL service. (I thought about keeping the DSL as a backup, but the reason I'm leaving DSL is that it has become unreliable; and I have heard that Comcast business Internet is reliable.) Final question, any advice for me? Anything you think might be useful, helpful, or educational. Thanks.

• Cannot change port 25 to port 587

  I am using outlook 2003. My email provider is Cox. Trying to change my out going port to 587 so I send mail while traveling. Others I know on Cox have done this with succes, but they are using newer version of outlook. When I go to change my existing email accounts, outlook will not allow me to change the settings. I can delete 25, but it will not allow me to type in 587. What am I doing wrong?
