  • Tiny DSLR Intervalometer Snaps Pics On User-Defined Schedule

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’re interested in time-lapse photography but underwhelmed by the in-camera options (or lack there of) or don’t want to shell out money for an expensive commercial intervalometer, this DIY option is pretty slick solution. Achim Sack, a fan of hardware hacking and time lapse photography, created a super tiny interval timer that works with Nikon, Canon, and Pentax DSLRs. Plug it in, snap a shot between 0.4 seconds and 18 minutes to set the interval and then leave it be. As long as you have space on the memory card and power left in the battery the camera will keep snapping pictures. Hit up the link below to see his schematics, parts list, and more photos of the build. • Rails Message This User Button

    - by bob
Hello, I am using this http://github.com/professionalnerd/simple-private-messages plugin in rails and I am on a user page show.html.erb - User and I want to put a button there that, when clicked, goes to the current user's inbox and populates the field call "send to" with the "user" name. How do I send that data along when the button is clicked? <%= link_to image_tag('send_message_button.jpg', :title => 'send #{user} a message', :alt => 'send #{user} a message'), new_user_message_path(current_user), :class=>'messageuser' %> This goes to the current_user's inbox. I want to send the "params[:user_id]" variable along with it so that I can then fill out the "send to" textbox in the inbox page with it. How do I send that params variable along with this button?

  • Ground Control by David Baum

    - by JuergenKress
As cloud computing moves out of the early-adopter phase, organizations are carefully evaluating how to get to the cloud. They are examining standard methods for developing, integrating, deploying, and scaling their cloud applications, and after weighing their choices, they are choosing to develop and deploy cloud applications based on Oracle Cloud Application Foundation, part of Oracle Fusion Middleware. Oracle WebLogic Server is the flagship software product of Oracle Cloud Application Foundation. Oracle WebLogic Server is optimized to run on Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, the integrated hardware and software platform for the Oracle Cloud Application Foundation family. Many companies, including Reliance Commercial Finance, are adopting this middleware infrastructure to enable private cloud computing and its convenient, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources. “Cloud computing has become an extremely critical design factor for us,” says Shashi Kumar Ravulapaty, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Reliance Commercial Finance. “It’s one of our main focus areas. Oracle Exalogic, especially in combination with Oracle WebLogic, is a perfect fit for rapidly provisioning capacity in a private cloud infrastructure.” Reliance Commercial Finance provides loans to tens of thousands of customers throughout India. With more than 1,500 employees accessing the company’s core business applications every day, the company was having trouble processing more than 6,000 daily transactions with its legacy infrastructure, especially at the end of each month when hundreds of concurrent users need to access the company’s loan processing and approval applications. • Inversion of Control Resource

    - by MarkPearl
Well… this is going to be another really short blog posting. I have been meaning to read more about IOC containers and came across this blog post which seemed to really explain the concept well – based on Castle Windsor. I also  enjoyed reading the replies about IOC on stack overflow and what it meant. If anyone knows of other good articles that explain the basics really well – wont you comment them to me.

  • user crontabs don't work, only /etc/crontab

    - by gletscher
Hi when I use the command crontab -e to set up cron, the commands get triggered (according to syslog) but nothing happens. Also if I run sudo crontab -e. The only way to actually get cron working is to manually etc /etc/crontab I'm confused, since syslog gives me the same output for both methods. Any ideas for tracing down this bug? Thanks alot!

  • SWT Layout for absolute positioning with minimal-spanning composites

    - by pure.equal
Hi, I'm writing a DND-editor where I can position elemtents (like buttons, images ...) freely via absolute positioning. Every element has a parent composite. These composites should span/grasp/embrace every element they contain. There can be two or more elements in the same composite and a composite can contain another composite. This image shows how it should look like. To achive this I wrote a custom layoutmanager: import org.eclipse.swt.SWT; import org.eclipse.swt.graphics.Point; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Composite; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Control; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Layout; public class SpanLayout extends Layout { Point[] sizes; int calcedHeight, calcedWidth, calcedX, calcedY; Point[] positions; /* * (non-Javadoc) * * @see * org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Layout#computeSize(org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Composite * , int, int, boolean) * * A composite calls computeSize() on its associated layout to determine the * minimum size it should occupy, while still holding all its child controls * at their minimum sizes. */ @Override protected Point computeSize(Composite composite, int wHint, int hHint, boolean flushCache) { int width = wHint, height = hHint; if (wHint == SWT.DEFAULT) width = composite.getBounds().width; if (hHint == SWT.DEFAULT) height = composite.getBounds().height; return new Point(width, height); } /* * (non-Javadoc) * * @see * org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Layout#layout(org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Composite, * boolean) * * Calculates the positions and sizes for the children of the passed * Composite, then places them accordingly by calling setBounds() on each * one. */ @Override protected void layout(Composite composite, boolean flushCache) { Control children[] = composite.getChildren(); for (int i = 0; i < children.length; i++) { calcedX = calcX(children[i]); calcedY = calcY(children[i]); calcedHeight = calcHeight(children[i]) - calcedY; calcedWidth = calcWidth(children[i]) - calcedX; if (composite instanceof Composite) { calcedX = calcedX - composite.getLocation().x; calcedY = calcedY - composite.getLocation().y; } children[i].setBounds(calcedX, calcedY, calcedWidth, calcedHeight); } } private int calcHeight(Control control) { int maximum = 0; if (control instanceof Composite) { if (((Composite) control).getChildren().length > 0) { for (Control child : ((Composite) control).getChildren()) { int calculatedHeight = calcHeight(child); if (calculatedHeight > maximum) { maximum = calculatedHeight; } } return maximum; } } return control.computeSize(SWT.DEFAULT, SWT.DEFAULT, true).y + control.getLocation().y; } private int calcWidth(Control control) { int maximum = 0; if (control instanceof Composite) { if (((Composite) control).getChildren().length > 0) { for (Control child : ((Composite) control).getChildren()) { int calculatedWidth = calcWidth(child); if (calculatedWidth > maximum) { maximum = calculatedWidth; } } return maximum; } } return control.computeSize(SWT.DEFAULT, SWT.DEFAULT, true).x + control.getLocation().x; } private int calcX(Control control) { int minimum = Integer.MAX_VALUE; if (control instanceof Composite) { if (((Composite) control).getChildren().length > 0) { for (Control child : ((Composite) control).getChildren()) { int calculatedX = calcX(child); if (calculatedX < minimum) { minimum = calculatedX; } } return minimum; } } return control.getLocation().x; } private int calcY(Control control) { int minimum = Integer.MAX_VALUE; if (control instanceof Composite) { if (((Composite) control).getChildren().length > 0) { for (Control child : ((Composite) control).getChildren()) { int calculatedY = calcY(child); if (calculatedY < minimum) { minimum = calculatedY; } } return minimum; } } return control.getLocation().y; } } The problem with it is that it always positions the composite at the position (0,0). This is because it tries to change the absolute positioning into a relative one. Lets say I position a image at position (100,100) and one at (200,200). Then it has to calculate the location of the composite to be at (100,100) and spanning the one at (200,200). But as all child positions are relative to their parents I have to change the positions of the children to remove the 100px offset of the parent. When the layout gets updated it moves everything to the top-left corner (as seen in the image) because the position of the image is not (100,100) but (0,0) since I tried to remove the 100px offset of the partent. Where is my error in reasoning? Is this maybe a totally wrong approach? Is there maybe an other way to achive the desired behavior? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Ed

Tom is the Tom behind the AskTom column in Oracle Magazine and is also the author of Expert Oracle Database Architecture (Apress, 2005/2009) among other books Abstract: Big Data The term "big data" draws a lot of attention, but behind the hype there's a simple story. For decades, companies have been making business decisions based on transactional data stored in relational databases. However, beyond that critical data is a potential treasure trove of less structured data: weblogs, social media, email, sensors, and photographs that can be mined for useful information. This presentation will take a look at what Big Data is and means - and Oracle's strategy for handling it Abstract: What are we still doing wrong? I've given many best practices presentations in the last 10 years. I've given many worst practices presentations in the last 10 years. I've seen some things change over the last ten years and many other things stay exactly the same. In this talk - we'll be taking a look at the good and the bad - what we do right and what we continue to do wrong over and over again. We'll look at why "Why" is probably the right initial answer to most any question. We'll look at how we get to "Know what we Know", and why that can be both a help and a hindrance. We'll peek at "Best Practices" and tie them into what I term "Worst Practices". In short, a talk on the good and the bad. I'm trying to set up git for my programming team. My setup is: 1. example.com (Ubuntu server) IP: 192.168.1.2 (public: xxx.yyy.yyy.zzz) main git repository in /var/www/testgit user: mot (root) 2. host2, Ubuntu IP: 192.168.1.101 git clone of main repo in ~/public_html/testgit1 user: nairda 3. host3, Ubuntu IP: 192.168.1.102 git clone of main repo in ~/www/testgit2 user: mot 4. host4, Windows Vista, Samba, msysgit IP: 192.168.1.103 git clone of main repo in c:\shared\testgit3 user: ataga I start a new main repo: cd /var/www/testgit1 git init Now, a lot of questions: Which groups and users do I have to create? How to set up required ssh keys? (I'm playing with gitosis, but with no success by now.) How to make the main repo visible to other hosts? How to clone this repo on the hosts? How to pull changes from others to main repo?

  • Implementing User-Defined Hierarchies in SQL Server Analysis Services

To be able to drill into multidimensional cube data at several levels, you must implement all of the hierarchies on the database dimensions. Then you'll create the attribute relationships necessary to optimize performance. Analysis Services hierarchies offer plenty of possibilities for displaying the data that your business requires. Rob Sheldon continues his series on SQL Server Analysis Services 2008.

  • Single-Purpose SSH account, exclusively for Reverse Port Forwarding

    - by drfloob
On my Debian system, I'd like to create a user that is only allowed to do a Reverse Port Forward from their machine to my server, but I'm not sure how to create a limited user specifically for this purpose. For example, we'll call my server 'Sam' and my laptop 'Luke'. I'd like a user on Luke to be able to execute a reverse port forward ssh command to Sam, so that port 4321 on Sam is tunneled to port 4321 on Luke. For example: ssh -fnR 4321:localhost:4321 -l limitedUser Sam How can I create a user on Sam that is only allowed to execute this command?

  • Low disk space: home/user folder occupies 94GB

    - by tedtoy
I am low on disk space and when I check the Disk Usage analyzer (using gksudo baobab) it indicates that my home/teddy folder is using 94GB, but when I browse through its contents I can only account for about 1gb of that usage. I've tried sudo apt-get clean and deleting the cached package files from Synaptic Package Manager, emptied trash but that has not changed the amount of free space I have. It seems similar to this problem But using the root disk usage analyzer has not given any insight into what is consuming so much space. Any ideas?

  • How to create a "shutdown user" or "shutdown account"

    - by pcapademic
Red Hat had a feature useful to me at the present time. There was an account, generally called "shutdown", and when you logged in with the account, the system shut down. In my specific case, I have Ubuntu Server running in a VM on my local system. The VM is running a web app, and when I'm done doing work, I want to shut down the VM. Unfortunately, I can't install VMware tools to get the "power button" based shutdown. Currently I login then sudo shutdown -h now, then type my password again, and things shutdown. Really, it's getting annoying all that waiting around and typing things. How do I replicate the "shutdown account" functionality in Ubuntu? A related question, were there any security gotchas that motivated people to stop using this kind of account?

Is this possible and if so where do I start my hunt? Aaron Update: I was not sure what server, was just thinking of doing it on say a win7 desktop. Just looking into having 2-3 users have access to a program without each seeing each other. Basically, I know nothing and want to know if this is a possibility for me. lol

  • End user query syntax?

    - by weberc2
I'm making a command line tool that allows end users to query a statically-schemed database; however, I want users to be able to specify boolean matchers in their query (effectively things like "get rows where (field1=abcd && field2=efgh) || field3=1234"). I did Googling a solution, but I couldn't find anything suitable for end users--still, this seems like it would be a very common problem so I suspect there is a standard solution. So: What (if any) standard query "languages" are there that might be appropriate for end users? What (if any) de facto standards are there (for example, Unix tools that solve similar problems). Failing the previous two options, can you suggest a syntax that would be simple, concise, and easy to validate?

  • Should you ever re-estimate user stories?

    - by f1dave
My current project is having a 'discussion' which is split down the middle- "this story is more complex than we originally thought, we should re-estimate" vs "you should never re-estimate as you only ever estimate up and never down". Can anyone shed some light on whether you ever should re-estimate? IMHO I'd imagine you could bring up an entirely new card for a new requirement or story, but going back and re-estimating on backlog items seems to skew the concept of relative sizing and will only ever 'inflate' your backlog.
