  • Windows XP volume control spontaneously slides to zero

    Was listening to a podcast in iTunes at my desk, left my desk briefly and as I sat down, the volume faded. If I scrolled the volume back up, using my keyboard or the volume tray icon, it would smoothly scroll back down again. I rebooted, same thing occurred. Figuring maybe I had a stuck keyboard or hitherto undiscovered mouse function, I unplugged each in turn. Volume still wanted to go to zero! Anyone know what might cause this? It's driving me nuts!

    i have installed snow leopard on my Acer laptop, but the problem is i have no adminstrative rights :S. In Accounts there are only 2 accounts, 1 my account 'tme' with Standard rights and other Guest account. How can i enable a root account? or how can i convert my account to administrative account.

  • Documenting user interfaces in a mouse-less touch UI

    “Old” apps rely on mouse pointing and tooltips to explain what a given button is for. Maybe there is text associated with the button, but you can only put so much text without wasting useful screen state. More so in a phone or tablet app. I’ve seen a trend in Google apps where they put an overlay on top of the app the first time it runs, to explain how the various pieces of UI work. I have seen this also on my Nexus phone, but don’t have a screenshot. I don’t recall a way to actually bring that help overlay back again, so that’s maybe some built-in gesture that’s missing.   • Wordpress with user login and file manager support

I've been asked by a friend I used to freelance for if there's a solution in Wordpress where users an login, then they can upload their own files in a "my docs" kind of thing. I've never used WP, so before I dig into their info I thought I'd see if anyone here can confirm or maybe point me to a resource.   • "Time Control" in a 2d Platformer

    I am making a 2d platformer where the player can press a button, and restart the level, only their previous character will also run the level at the same time, like they are traveling back in time. I know other games have done this before, and the way I have thought of doing it is to make the game character have a set of actions (Idle, Jumping, Walking Left etc.) and then detect changes in those actions and log them into a list along with the game time. So then when I need the character to run the level again on its own, I can just go through the list changing its actions at the right time. Is this the best way to do it? Does anyone have any experience in this? Thanks.

  • Tips on how to notify a user of new features in your game

    I have noticed a problem when releasing new features for a game that I wrote for Android and published on Google Play Store. Because my game is "stage-based" - and not a game like Hay Day, for example, where users will just go into the game every day since it can't really be finished - my users are not aware of new features that I release for the game. For example, if I publish a new version of my game and it contains a couple new stages, most of their devices will just auto-update the game and they don't even notice this and think to check out what's new. So this is why an approach like popping open a dialog that showcases the new feature(s) when they open the game for the first time after the update was done is not really sufficient. I am looking for some tips on an approach that will draw my users back into the game and then they could read more detail about new features on such a dialog. I was thinking of something like a notification that tells them to check out the new features after an update is done but I am not sure if this is a good idea. Any suggestions to help me solve this problem would be awesome.

  • CMS for single user-editable pages?

    Does anybody know of a CMS where users can edit their own page, and their page only (something similar to about.me, except with more customization/options)? I'm not talking about profiles, but more like an individual web page for people's businesses. I want to be able to give local businesses the opportunity to make a single web page for their businesses with ease. I have looked at many CMS's, but I can't find anything that offers this type of functionality. I've check out the following: Unify Concrete 5 Drupal Simple CMS CMS Made Simple (and more) If anybody knows a CMS with the functionality that I'm looking for, or even a regular CMS with modules/plugins that I would be able to use, that would be awesome. I soppose .fnfxrc file must be available after installation or first fnfx demon lauch.   • Windows 8 Initial User Experience

    Today is the second day I'm using a Windows 8 laptop.  Load up time is fast, and changing applications is very smooth.  However, I keep finding myself hitting the windows key (double-clicking a PDF file, and, what?  How do I get back?)Other than that, the experience has been fine.  So far this has not been any worse than other windows upgrade experience I had so far.  No bad news is good news here.

  • First time user here

    Never used Linux before but I decided I want to start somewhere and Ubuntu seemed like the right place to start. I burned the 64bit version iso onto a CD and installed it onto a fresh new hard drive I got and it installed nicely or so I thought. First major problem was the fact that the screen slip oddly, second when I tried to log in everything just kind of froze, I could still move the cursor but thats it. I'm not too tech savy but I can follow instructions and any help given would be greatly appreciated. I am considering dual booting it with my other hard drive that has windows 7 on it but I'm afraid I might mess that up, plus if I do it that way I wouldn't know how to get rid of Ubuntu if I decide its not for me.

  • Brightness control not working on HP Pavilion dm3t (Intel GMA 4500MHD)

    Hey all, I picked up an hp dm3t laptop with intel HD graphics and installed ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on it. It works great -- the only problem is that the brightness controls on the keyboard don't work. The brightness is always at full. When I try to adjust it down, the indicator graphic indicates that it's going down but the actual brightness doesn't change. Is there anything that I can try to make this work? I'd really appreciate any help. I asked this on superuser.com and someone commented that I should play around with the intel hd drivers. I'm a total noob -- how do I do that? What else can I try? I really don't want to go back to windows.

  • Mobile Web Framework that will only control rendering and page transitions

    I have been using jQueryMobile for a bit now, and there are some things I like about it and others I do not. First I will give a bit of background. I have a light weight mobile application that has a few configurations and 6 pages. Ideally I Would like to load all pages into the DOM (they interact with each other quite often and pages will be switched in the same frequency). The application will post for some JSON every n seconds and refresh the values on the page (yes it is primarily a information display app). with the jQuery Mobile framework the only real thing I like is how easy it is to have a standardized UI a crossed all devices and browsers, I'm really not using too much else out of the framework other than the basic page navigation (if you are familiar with the framework; a bare-bone multi-page design is all i need). Why I want to step away from jQueryMobile is how weighty it is. Not only do you need to include the mobile library, but also the base jQuery libraries. This I do not like because I'm not using jQuery anywhere else on the site. Any suggestions on light-weight mobile frameworks that have a similar rendering as jQueryMobile?

  • Passing ASP.NET User by Dependency Injection

    In my web application I have various components that need to access the currently authenticated user (HttpContext.User). There are two obvious ways a component can access this: 1) Accessing getting the User from HttpContext.Current 2) Passing the user around in constructors Is not ideal because it makes testing difficult and ties application components to web concerns, when they really shouldn't know about it. Is just messy and complicates everything. So I've been thinking about passing in the current user (or perhaps just the name/id) to any component that needs it using an IoC container (via dependency injection). Is anyone using this technique to supply the current ASP.NET user to parts of the application? Or, Does this sound like a sensible approach? I would like know how this has worked out for people.   • Tons of problems a new user is encountering

    I've borrowed this laptop from a friend. I wanted to install AdBlock to boost performance. First weird thing was that even though I was on Chrome, Chrome suggested me installing him? So I tried to install ,than it gave me some message about broken dependencies. I Googled and tried to run those commands you guys were suggesting, but than it popped up error messages about everything again. Than I found out that some package called linux image generic is broken, than I tried to find an answer to that, but on the topic it was ” ndk.bhj\spo;ujvsdljvaEOYUFgidgAPIF;hsgvk in other words, I didn't understand anything about it, than there's this thing: E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? Seriously, when I'm trying to fix an error, there is another one. I'm on something called GNOME. Sooo, where do I start?

  • Ubuntu 10.04 User Interface errors

    Hi Guys Using Ubuntu 10.04 Beta on a Sony Vaio laptop (slightly old PCG-4n7M). It was working wonderfully until this morning. After updating and upgrading the login screen images gave broken image icons, then on logging in UI was replaced with just the cmd shell. All menus are gone. I have tried to reconfigure xserver-xorg and that doesn't work. Reinstalling doesn't either. I have tried a number of other attempts. What is weird is that I can launch graphical applications from the cmd line. such as firefox or google-chrome. and they work but the UI is simplified or broken (no resizing, closing, minimizing). I am a bit lost on how to fix this error. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know

For instance, I like to see a graph or table that shows the downloaded and uploaded amounts per day, week or month and in total for a selected period. OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7 Edit: I don't need to see the traffic program by program. I'm not interested in which program accesses the internet, but I'm interested in monitoring my incoming and outgoing data amounts using a light-weight freeware.

  • Control Media via Arduino

    I want to create an application that controls the volume, play next\last, stop\play and things like this (I don't know what they called) like in a keyboard. I have tried to find how to do this with Python\Java but I couldn't find how. The main idea is (if some-one knows what is arduino) to connect it to my PC (Ubuntu) and to get from it signals that gives me values and with this values to be able to change the volume and to do next song\video.
