• Using Linux vs Windows for development

  On my servers I run everything on Linux/ Apache, but for offline preparation before upload of the projects I'm using Windows (Vista) with a local Apache/ WAMP, PHP, Python, GD_image installation and so on. My question, would it be much easier in terms of setting up a good environment if I were to use Linux, e.g. Ubuntu distribution, as development OS for these things? Would you know some pros and cons when it comes to Windows vs Linux in terms of web development? (As I'm using mostly web apps these days, switching the OS might be less of a problem. I would need a good replacement for my image editor, though, as I prefer Corel PhotoPaint and PSP4 over Gimp, last time I tried.)

• Asp.net 4.0 site fails because no handler mapped with Classic appPool

  When I create a Asp.net app and flip the appPool to "ASP.NET v4.0 Classic" it fails with the following error: HTTP Error 404.17 - Not Found The requested content appears to be script and will not be served by the static file handler. After some searching it seems to be the handler not mapping correctly for the Classic mode but I can't find out where or how to fix that. I have the full .Net 4.0 install with VS2010 and the app works fine if I flip the appPool to Integrated. Also, it's a Windows 7 machine (I'm having the same problem on a Vista box). • unable to connect to ASP.Net development server issue

  Hello everyone, I am debugging codeplex simple project = http://www.codeplex.com/sl2videoplayer. I am using VSTS 2008 + C# + Windows Vista x86 Enterprise. I have not modified any code of this codeplex project, and just press F5 to run VideoPlayerWeb project. The current issue I met with is error message -- "Unable to connect to ASP.Net Development Server". Here is my screen snapshots when clicking F5. • Does my AMD-based machine use little endian or big endian?

  I'm going though a computers system course and I'm trying to establish, for sure, if my AMD based computer is a little endian machine? I believe it is because it would be Intel-compatible. Specifically, my processor is an AMD 64 Athlon x2. I understand that this can matter in C programming. I'm writing C programs and a method I'm using would be affected by this. I'm trying to figure out if I'd get the same results if I ran the program on an Intel based machine (assuming that is little endian machine). Finally, let me ask this: Would any and all machines capable of running Windows (XP, Vista, 2000, Server 2003, etc) and, say, Ubuntu Linux desktop be little endian? Thank You, Frank

• Multilangual Unicode rendering in opengl

  Hi Folks, I have to extend an OpenGL-Rendering System to support international characters (especially Hebrew, Arabic and cyrillic). Development Platform is Windows(XP|Vista|7), Alas using Embercardero Delphi 2010. I currently use wglOutLineFont(...) to build my font's display list and glCallLists(length(m_Text), UNSIGNED_SHORT, PWchar(m_Text) ) to render my strings. While this is feasable for Latin-1 Characters, building the full unicode character set in advanced is pretty time-consuming (about 8.5 minutes on my machine), so i am looking for a more efficient solution. I thought about limiting the range from u+0020 - u+077f (latin, greek, cyrillic, arbaic and hebrew) to include just the glyphs i need, but that would just be a solution for my current needs, and will become insufficent once other encoding is needed. On the upside, i do not have to worry about left-to right or right-to left direction as our application can handle this already. I would expect this to be a well-known problem, so i would like to ask if there is any reference material on this on the web, or if you could share some insight on this?

• Freezing Eclipse

  I use Eclipse for programming in PHP and Java(Android) and sometimes Python, unfortunately Eclipse is nowadays much more often freezing. Often when I write this bracket "[" for defining an array in PHP, Eclipse just freeze and I have to close it manualy and start again. I've noted also, that Eclipse is consuming really much of my RAM... 200-300MiB of my available memory is nothing special. :-( Is there any way to check, what is consuming the memory in Eclipse and why it's freezing? I'm running on Windows Vista, 3GB RAM.

• ASP.NET Development Server - Empty webResource.axd after conversion from 2.0 to 3.5

  I have moved a project from asp.net 2.0 to 3.5. The original project was using the atlas ajax extensions so I have modified the code to use the built in ajax features in 3.5. When running the project within the dev environemnt (VS2008 on Vista Business SP1) and using the asp.net dev server I receive javascript errors such as WebForm_PostBackOptions which point to a missing handler/module. If I deploy the project and run it stand alone within IIS or if I use Fiddler2 while running in VS2008 I do not see the errors and fiddler shows that the axd files are being downloaded correctly. Also deploying to a 2003 server does not show any issues. I could just carry on and forget this as it works when deployed but I would like to understand what is happening. Has anyone got an ideas as to what is going on here and how to get the same results accross all environments?

• TAPI App on 64bits OS

  I have a TAPI Application (Delphi 2007) working on 32bits OSs (XP, Vista, Win7). The TAPI server is 32bits Windows 2003 SP2. While TAPI APP is running on 64bits OS, I can connect to the line but i cannot get TAPI messages on my App. I can see messages have arrived on machine through Tracing tapisrv but the WaitForSingleObjectEx to the event handle (returned by lineInitializeEx) is never signaled (always returns WAIT_TIMEOUT). I've also tried C++ code and 64bits compiler but the 64bits App had the same behavior (except not even starting on 32bits OS :-) ). Is there any ideas how i can receive the TAPI messages to my App??? EDIT: Well, it seems that only the messages regarding incoming calls are cut. If (while App is running) i execute "tcmsetup /c /d" (=disable TAPI) then i DO receive LINE_CLOSE and LINE_REMOVE messages. Then, if i execute "tcmsetup /c server_name", i DO get the LINE_CREATE message. I can lineOpen the new line provided but still CANNOT get LINE_APPNEWCALL, LINE_CALLSTATE etc

• GetVersionEx Not Working on Windows 7?!

  On my Windows 7 system, the GetVersionEx Windows API function returns "6.0", indicating Windows Vista, when it should return "6.1". If it matters, I used the following Delphi code: function winver: string; var ver: TOSVersionInfo; begin ver.dwOSVersionInfoSize := SizeOf(ver); if GetVersionEx(ver) then with ver do result := IntToStr(dwMajorVersion) + '.' + IntToStr(dwMinorVersion) + '.' + IntToStr(dwBuildNumber) + ' (' + szCSDVersion + ')'; end; and the string "6.0.6002 (Service Pack 2)" was returned. Isn't this highly odd?

• How to stop NpgsqlDataReader from blocking?

  Running the following code against a large PostgreSQL table, the NpgsqlDataReader object blocks until all data is fetched. NpgsqlCommand cmd = new NpgsqlCommand(strQuery, _conn); NpgsqlDataReader reader = cmd.ExecuteReader(); // <-- takes 30 seconds How can I get it to behave such that it doesn't prefetch all the data? I want to step through the resultset row by row without having it fetch all 15 GB into memory at once. I know there were issues with this sort of thing in Npgsql 1.x but I'm on 2.0. This is against a PostgreSQL 8.3 database on XP/Vista/7. I also don't have any funky "force Npgsql to prefetch" stuff in my connection string. I'm at a complete loss for why this is happening.

• Java program strange behavior, how to fix it ?

  My notebook has Intel CPU, running Windows Vista. My program looks like this : public class Tool_Lib_Simple { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("123"); } } When I run it, I expect to see : "123", but the output was : "Hi NM : How are you NM ?" which was the old output from two days ago before I changed my program. If I copy this program into another project in Netbean 6.7, it will run correctly and output "123", and if I change the program name from "Tool_Lib_Simple" to something else, it will also output "123", but just not under the name of "Tool_Lib_Simple" in the current project's src directory, I've deleted the "build" directory and did re-compile, re-build, it still gives me "Hi NM : How are you NM ?" as a result, seems to me the old version of my program is saved in the hard drive or ram and got stuck there, I've programmed many years, hardly ever encounter this kind of problem, how to fix this ? • "Disabled use of AcceptEx() WinSock2 API" error on Windows 7 using Tomcat

  When starting Tomcat 6 on Windows 7 Enterprise with JRE 6 using C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 6.0\bin\tomcat6.exe the application does not open and my event viewer has the message: "Disabled use of AcceptEx() WinSock2 API." The same installer of Tomcat worked on Windows Vista before I upgraded my operating system. Can anyone please suggest a way to fix this? The only site I can find mentioning this is http://www.apachelounge.com/viewtopic.php?p=4418 which suggests using this config setting "Win32DisableAcceptEx" - but it's for Apache, not Tomcat, and I have no idea where in what config file it might need to go in Tomcat.

If I build a program, how can I get it to hide in the notifications area(windows 7, cant remember what it's called in XP or Vista) when I minimize it? Like say a Torrent program, or a AntiVirus program. Also I'd like to know, how can I hide it from the notifications area and bring it up when it a hotkey command is entered? • NAS disk - problem with accessing SAMBA

  Hello I have a NAS disk running on some version of Linux. The disk is located in local network (5 PC running XP or Vista, all connected to Linksys Router). I have problems accessing NAS resources through SAMBA. The 1st issue is that the NAS is not accessible through hostname (even if it is configured), 2nd point is that it is mostly not accessible through IP manner (\IP_OF_NAS). Rest of services (FTP, HTTP access) works flawlessly. I connected the NAS to my home network (only 1 WinXP and Linsys router) and the NAS is working fine - SAMBA access together with hostname recognition works perfectly. I wonder this is an issue with WINS? Could anybody help? Regards

• SQL Server Compact with Visual Studio 2008

  I am running SQL server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 on Vista. I downloaded SQL server compact 3.5 SP1 from Microsofts website and ran the install. When I open the server explorer for any windows application that I'm working on with VS 2008 and right click on data connections and then on add a connection a dialog comes up with available data providers. The problem is that SQL compact is not one of the options. Any idea why SQL compact is not showing up as a data provider in VS 2008?

• ASP.NET Asynchronous Tasks - Worker Thread Not Releasing?

  I am having an issue with testing asynchronous tasks in ASP.NET & IIS7. From what I have read, the worker thread should be released back into the thread pool while the I/O thread performs the async work, allowing ASP.NET to server other incoming requests. But when I simulate heavy load on the web application by making 20 simultaneous requests to a page (async.aspx) that performs long running async tasks, I am unable to browse to some other normal aspx page until the requests are just about done. Am I misunderstanding or missing something here? I am running Vista Biz x64, VS2008 + IIS7. I have the Async attribute applied to the Page directive.

• Operating system for visualization app in 6 monitors

  Hi. I have to plan the development for an application with these major requirements: Show different graphical data and animations in 6 monitors, in fullscreen mode. The hardware to be used is a PC with 3 NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 cards. I have some expertise working with OpenGL, but never with more than one monitor. I have the (some limited) freedom to choose an operating system for the application. My options are: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Ubuntu 8.04/10.04. I would like to know, if you have some expertise or knowledge in the multi-monitor application development field, what is the recommended operating system for this kind of application? And, do I need any software other than the operating system and the NVIDIA drivers to be able to use the 6 monitors in fullscreen, showing different things in each one of them? • Fluent NHib causing visual studio 2010 hanging at runtime

  Just installed and migrated a 2008 solution on Vista ultimate 64 and .net 4.0. Everything builds and tests run surprisingly well but I got the hang description below while trying to run the app under SQLite. It turns out that the hang has got something to do when the call is made for FNH to build the session factory during a run, the only feedback I get is that the database wasn't configure properly without any inner exception. • Out of Memory on Update or Delete of Service Reference

  I have a Service Reference for a WCF project that has just over a hundred endpoints in my ServiceHost web.config. Every time I attempt to update or delete the Service Reference, it fails with an out of memory exception. I am running Vista Ultimate SP2 64-bit with 8GB RAM. I can work around it by going outside the project and deleting the Service References folder, then coming back in and re-adding the Reference. Is this the only workaround that you know of? Thanks!

• Security exception with ASP.NET AJAX toolkit

  I've got an ASP.NET WebForms app that I've written, which uses the ASP.NET AJAX Toolkit. I've put the MultiView control onto the web form, and it worked fine, when I had it under Vista. Well, I had to replace my machine (HD failed) and I went to Windows 7 Ultimate. I tried copying the ASP.NET app from the system (before it finally failed for good) and put it onto the Windows 7 machine. I can bring up the app fine, go to all pages, but the one with these controls on it. When I do I get the following error: Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. What's going on? How do I fix it?

• SDK for writing DVD's

  I need to add DVD writing functionality to an application I'm working on. However it needs to be able to write out files that are being grabbed "live" from a camera, over a long period of time. I can't wait until all the files are captured before I start writing them to the DVD, I need to write them out in chunks as I go along. I've looked at IMAPI v2, but the main problems seems to be that you need to point it to all the files you plan to write out to disk before you start the burning process. I know it has to concept of "sessions", which means you can write to the DVD in several parts, before you finally "close" it. But I was wondering if there were any other DVD writing SDK's that allow you to be constantly writing files to a DVD and in particular files that are only in memory. It would be more efficient if I didn't have to write the captured images out to hard before they are burned to DVD. The solution needs to work under .NET on Windows XP and vista

• C# setup project output automatically start with administrative rights

  Hi, i've created an setup project for a .net-application which works fine. The problem is, that the application begins to write log-files after startup and this requires administrative rights on windows vista and windows 7. I know there are some folders which i could use to write into without administrative rights. When i start the application as administrator, everything works fine. I asked myself, if it's possible to change the setup project in visual studio in a way that the installed application automatically owns administrative rights on the target system?
