• Httpd Process High memory usage and slow page loads

  Hello all, I am running wampserver on my windows vista machine. I have been doing this for a long time and it has been working great. I have completed loads of projects with this setup. However, today, without me changing anything (no configuration etc) only PHP code changes, I find that every time I load pages of my site (those with user sessions or access the database) are really slow to load - Over 30 seconds, they use to take 1 or 2 seconds. When I have a look at the task manager, I can see on page loads the httpd process jumps from 10mb to 30mb, 90mb, 120mb, 250mb and then back down again. I have tested previous php code projects and they seem to all be slow as well! What is going on? Thanks all for any help on this confusion issue!

• What should I use to replace the WinAPI Beep() function?

  I've got a Visual C++/CLI app which uses beeps to signify good and bad results (used when the user can't see the screen). Currently I use low pitched beeps for bad results and high pitched beeps for good results: if( goodResult == true ) { Beep(1000, 40); } else { Beep(2000, 20); } This works okay on my Vista laptop, but I've tried it on other laptops and some seem to play the sounds for less time (they sound more like clicks than beeps) or the sound doesn't play at all. So I have two questions here: Is there a more reliable beep function? Is there a (simple) way I can play a short .wav file or something similar instead (preferred solution).

• Where to find .NET version usage statistics?

  There are some technologies like LINQ and WPF which are nice, but installation of .NET 3.5 is still slow procedure. It's important to understand - among Windows users how many of them have .NET 3.5 installed? Is there any good up to date stats gathered about .NET Version availability/usage? I've searched a lot, but can't find. Update: .NET version IS present in web-agent strings for FF and IE at least. So there SHOULD be somebody who have that information. Anyone with access to really large web-site logs? Update 2: I also understand Vista means that user have 3.5, but XP is still dominating the market.

• Win32_PageFileUsage WMI call returning 0 for CurrentUsage

  I am querying for the current page file usage on Windows-based systems. This is meant to run on the .NET Framework, version 2.0 SP1 and has been tested (and works!) on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows Server 2008. On Windows Server 2003 SP2 (original release, not R2) it appears to return 0: using (var query = new ManagementObjectSearcher("SELECT CurrentUsage FROM Win32_PageFileUsage")) { foreach (ManagementBaseObject obj in query.Get()) { uint used = (uint)obj.GetPropertyValue("CurrentUsage"); return used; } } This is simply returning the results from the first row returned for the WMI call. Even when a page file is being used, it returns 0. What causes the result to be 0 when it should be returning a larger value? It may be something specific to the machine in question, and could have nothing to do with the operating system version. I've also tried this with and without elevated privileges with the same results.

  hi .. how do i make sure that the application iam developing will look the same on other windows-systems? iam developing now on a windows7, with .net 3.5 framework .. (VS 2008) as an example, i have a toolbar, that i changed its rendermode to system, it looks ok on my windows7, but when i run the application on windows xp, it is different, even the onmouseover backcolor is different. .. is there a way to make the application looks like on every windows system (talking abt xp, vista and windows 7 only), lets say like exporting the settings of all the controls with the application !? or any trick to make sure it will be always the same ? thankss in advance

• deep zoom is not displayed

  I am using VSTS 2008 + C# + .Net 3.5 + Windows Vista Enterprise x86. I have used Silverlight Deep Zoom composer tool to export my composed images into Siverlight type. Everything is previewed fine after export successful message (I select browse from browser). But when I click the Test.html in the exported project to show Deep Zoom effects from browser, nothing is displayed. Here is my screen snapshot. Any ideas what is wrong? http://i41.tinypic.com/2dac561.jpg EDIT 1: to my surprise, there is no clientbin folder in my exported project. I have made two screen snapshots for, my project folder generated by Deep Zoom Composer under Exported Data folder; the content of GeneratedImages folder under my project folder. • Connection to embedded device with Windows and .Net

  I am building a .net application(xp, vista, 7) that will communicate with an embedded device. I will be able to connect via IP, serial port and modem. Question: Should I allow some type of open connection within my application that will allow me to connect to the device through some other channels that may be set up in the operating system just to allow future extensibility without really having to change anything on the device? I was just imagining that the operating system would be able to serve all communication channels that may be setup through the operating system to the device. Like would an admin setup some channel through SMTP or other protocol. I just didn’t want to box myself in and ignore some more open architecture. Thanks.

  I am aware of MSINFO32, but I'm wondering if there is a MS DOS command similar to ipconfig in order to get system specifications? I would like for the system specifications to be displayed in the MS DOS prompt. I would like to see at least: CPU RAM BUS speed Thanks for any insights. • Windows 7 Program Compatibility Assistant appeared for my app. Why?

  I have created a native application. It works without questions under Win XP and Win Vista. Under Win 7 my application installed fine. I ran it. It worked normally until i selected 'Exit' from menu. On exit "Program Compatibility Assistant" window appeared telling me my application is incompatible with Windows 7 and some compatibility settings was applied. My questions are: How can i know what my application did to trigger Program Compatibility Assistant? Is there any list of do's and dont's? Where can i look for compatibility settings applied to my application?

• Cannot step into .NET framework source with VS2008 SP1.

  Somehow my VS2008 SP1 has lost the ability to step into .NET framework sources. I've played around with checkboxes to no end; I've re-deleted the Symbol cache folder a dozen times; and I've tried all kinds of debug symbol servers. All it does is download some .PDB files, but when I try to select a stack frame in .NET, I always get the message about no source available and "do you want to view disassembly". What gives? Added: Web application; Windows Vista Business x32; .NET 3.5 SP1.

  Our product utilizes (the wonderful) Winpcap to capture ip packets from all devices with an IP address and analyze them in real time. Unfortunately, we discovered that it does NOT capture any packets on dialup (e.g. PPP) connections on Windows 7, and that there are no near-term plans for enabling this (1). So we need something else. Microsoft Network Monitor and Windows Packet Filter are two options that surfaced during a bit of googling, but before delving into research I wanted to ask the experienced: what are out options, given the following requirements: Capture all in/outbound IP packets on the machine.   I need to open a new pop up window on click of a button in a view. The new window should be redirect to a specific actionmethod in a specific controller. I also need to provide attributes for size of the new pop up window.   I am getting following error each time I tried to select database. The database 'DB Name' is not accessible. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ObjectExplorer) Note: My OS is Win Vista. When I tried to open SQL Mgmt Studio as Run as administrator than I can able to access database properly. Any idea why it is giving error. I am also getting following error when my asp.net application is trying to access database. Cannot open database "DBName" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'PCName\abcd'. I am not very good with SQL Server, please let me know how to create user and grant them permission in case that is what causing the problem. Thanks.

  Does anyone now how to achieve a "Secure-Desktop Mode" (effect) such as one gets from the Windows Vista/7 UAC consent-blocks? I assume it is some function which will remove pixels here-and-there (and possibly graying them) and then finally drawing that to screen... I would like to apply it to my application to keep the user from doing anything until the another user connects to the system (but that is besides the point) I would really appreciate the advise. • Windows service only gets called when Visual Studio is attached to process

  I've created a simple windows service in C# using Visual Studio 2010. It uses a TcpListener and socket to listen for messages on a given port. This worked absolutely perfectly when my laptop had Windows Vista on it. However, since upgrading to Windows 7 and re-installing my service it only responds if I'm attached to the process and debugging in Visual Studio 2010 - at which time it behaves as expected. I've tried running the service under my (administrator) credentials and setting the exe to run as administrator. I've also checked "Allow service to interact with desktop" when it was running under the Local System account. I'm testing using both a test console app and an Adobe Air application - both with the same results. Are there some specific permissions that I need to allow the service to be called?

  Consider following situation, assuming single CPU system: thread A is running with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_NORMAL, signals event E thread B with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_LOWEST is waiting for an event E (Note: at this point the thread is not scheduled because it is runnable, but A is higher priority and runnable as well) thread A calls SetThreadPriority(B, THREAD_PRIORITY_ABOVE_NORMAL) Is thread B re-scheduled immediately to run, or is thread A allowed to continue until current time-slice is over, and B is scheduled only once a new time-slice has begun? I would be interested to know the answer for WinXP, Vista and Win7, if possible. Note: the scenario above is simplified from my real world code, where multiple threads are running on multiple cores, but the main object of the question stays: does SetThreadPriority cause thread scheduling to happen?

I'm a computer science student and my course is predominately told on Linux. However, my client runs all their computers on vista or Windows 7. My ideas are to develop the client front end in Visual C# and access a central postgresql server. I'm a beginner in Windows Programming so I'm after advice on best practice on implement user rights and access levels in C# (WPF or Windows FORM). I've had a look into Credential class in Visual C# and access control list but please share your thoughts. • Can I override a group policy setting as a machine admin?

  Group policy prevents several configuration settings on my Windows 7 / Vista machines. Since my domain account is a member of the local Administrators group on these boxes, is there still a way to override them locally? For instance, GP prevents changing the power management option "Turn off the display" (even changing it from cmd fails: POWERCFG -X -monitor-timeout-ac 60 = "An unexpected error condition has occurred. Unable to perform operation. You may not have permission to perform this operation.") Even when logging on with a local account and not the domain account, it's not possible to change the setting anymore ..

• Command line does not execute my parameters

  I have created a batch file to run an application automatically but it seems my CMD does not run it. I typed this (using notepad as an example): CMD /C "C:\notepad2\notepad2.exe" If I run this from Windows Vista it worked. But running this from Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) it just doesn't work. I even try using that line from the Run menu but no go. What do I do? My aim is to run a scheduled task that runs the batch file every now and then.

I'm not sure what is going wrong, but I noticed, that the value of oldWallPaper looks something like "C\0\:\0\0U\0s\0e\0r\0s[...]" -- I'm wondering where all the \0s come from. A friend of mine compiled it on windows xp 32 (also VC++ 2010) and is able to run it without problems any clues/hints/opinions? thanks

• Find where a variable is defined in PHP (And/or SMARTY)?

  I'm currently working on a very large project, and am under a lot of pressure to finish it soon, and I'm having a serious problem. The programmer who wrote this last defined variables in a very odd way - the config variables aren't all in the same file, they're spread out across the entire project of over 500 files and 100k+ lines of code, and I'm having a hell of a time figuring out where a certain variable is, so I can fix an issue. Is there a way to track this variable down? I believe he's using SMARTY (Which I can not stand, due to issues like this), and the variable is a template variable. I'm fairly sure that the variable I'm looking for was initially defined as a PHP variable, then that variable is passed into SMARTY, so I'd like to track down the PHP one, however if that's impossible - how can I track down where he defined the variable for SMARTY? P.S. I'm in Vista, and don't have ssh access to the server, so 'grep' is out of the question.
