• Does HyperV allow binding physical NIC on virtual machine with promiscues mode?

  I have HyperV on Windows 2008 Enterprise R2 installed with some Virtual Server running that I wanted to have ISA or NTOP to monitor traffic. I've added additional physical NIC to server and wanted to use this NIC as traffic monitor (I've enabled port mirroring on switch). I can see on physical machine that runs HyperV a lot of traffic coming to the NIC so port mirroring works fine. However in virtual machine even thou I've assigned that NIC to only this one and only server it sees 0 packets. In VWMare Workstation it worked without problem and I could see mirrored traffic on VM. Should this be possible or HyperV is crippled?

• Best practice on Linux servers and CPU/power throttling?

  I am running a couple of Debian 6 (2.6.32) and 7 (3.2) Linux servers and all of them have energy saving settings enabled in their BIOS. Furthermore Linux shows that the CPUs are throttled if the servers are idling. I wonder if this could cause any harm - could there be e.g. performance impacts because Linux would not be able to handle throttling correctly? Is there a best practice for Linux servers and power/CPU throttling? Do you guys switch your energy profiles to "performance" or do you leave both the BIOS and the OS with their default settings? The reason I am asking is that I encountered several performance issues on physical Dell servers although all values (CPU/load, memory, I/O, network etc.) seemed to be normal. After changing the BIOS power settings to "performance" in those specific cases, I was able to get rid of the performance issues.

  I got a new DLink DIR-615 routeur. DSL model connects fine. Connected PCs connects to the internet fine (wireless, wired) fine too. After ~3 minutes, connected PCs cannot go to the internet. Web pages goes timeout, sometimes google talk stays on (working). From the router admin page, pings works correctly (on google.ca), so the connection is active. pc -- routeur -- internet: fail pc -- router: ok router -- internet: ok could it be firewall related? I've read there's a SPI firewall enabled.

• Can I use an nVidia Geforce 9600GT for triple-monitor?

  My work PC has (as you can guess from the title) a single Geforce 9600GT card. According to the spec page for this card, both DVI ports are Dual-Link DVI. Both are currently in use on Dell 19" 1280x1024 screens. I'm running Windows 7, with Aero enabled, for what that's worth. What I'm wondering is if I can use a standard DVI splitter cable to drive a third screen from one of the ports -- specifically a Samsung 22" 1680x1050. I'm really outgrowing the two-screen setup, and am strongly considering bringing in my home monitor (which is almost never used) to bolster my usable space. If I can't, then my alternative is to replace one of these Dells with that Samsung, to give me at least a "little" more space. (Before you ask, there's probably no chance I can get my company to spring for a second video card and third monitor. Even if I could, it would not be politically expedient, as a number of my other coworkers are already pretty jealous at my setup.)

• Internet Explorer 8 Viewing PDF files vs saving them

  I have a user asking about viewing PDF files in Internet Explorer. When she clicks the file link on a website, IE prompts her to save the file, which she then has to open to read. What she's not seeing in the prompt is the ability to open the file without having to save it, or, just opening the PDF automatically. She and a few others are having the same problem, while a majority of the user do not have this problem. All of the users have IE 8 and Adobe Reader 9 installed. I've verified that Adobe Reader's "Display PDF in browser" option is enabled. What else should I check?

  After installing IIS on my dev system, window xp professional, its asking for username and password while trying to access http://localhost. Can you please help me out. Tried googling and tried may things but could not resolve the issue. • Vim - dynamic list of open buffers in a window

  I've investigated a few ways to maintain a list of open buffers in Vim, and some of them are very good, but none of them seem to behave the way I'd like. It's very possible that nothing like what I want exists, and it can't hurt to ask. I've been using NERDTree in GVim, and I like the idea of putting the information in a slender left-hand window.   Hi Dudes, Installed Win 2008 server and IIS7. Enabled ASP Classic and ASP.NET on it. Can't get any ASP scripts to run e.g. desperate.asp containing following line: <% Response.Write "Hello Love, Fancy a Date?" % It just comes up with a "FILE DOWNLOAD - SECURITY WARNING" panel asking em to download. When I select anything it keeps looping. Found lots fo stuff on internet but nothing working. Also same for other ASP scripts HTML works no problem e.g. a file called reply.html containing: Get lost little boy. We only serve French Fries in Macdonalds Any ideas?

I was wondering if anyone ever done something, I'm reading VPN over IPsec but that mainly covers if you had 2 nodes with 2 public IP address. • Forwarding 80 to 443 on Nagios woes

  I perhaps just need some extra insight because I don't see where I'm going wrong. I used an SSL Cert to secure our nagios server. We want to specifically require all traffic over nagios (like 2 users, lol) to use SSL. So I thought, oh, mod_rewrite + Rewrite Rule in .htaccess, right? So I went into the DocumentRoot and did a vi .htaccess (one didn't already exist) and then I put in the following rule; RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80 RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://our.server.org/$1 [R,L] This does absolutely nothing. Does nada. Whhhyy.. Note: AllowOverride all in httpd.conf is on. Also, I verified that the module is not uncommented out ... but note, I couldn't find the mod_rewrite module installed so I copied it over from another server and placed it in modules/mod_rewrite.so . It was weird because it was enabled in the httpd.conf file, but then didn't exist in modules ... I'm a baddie :(

  I am using sshd, and allow logins with public key authentication. I want to allow select users to log in with a PAM two-factor authentication module. Is there any way I can allow PAM two-factor authentication for a specifc user? I don't want users - By the same token - I only want to enable password authentication for specific accounts. I want my SSH daemon to reject the password authentication attempts to thwart would-be hackers into thinking that I will not accept password authentication - except for the case in which someone knows my heavily guarded secret account, which is password enabled. I want to do this for cases in which my SSH clients will not let me do either secret key, or two-factor authentication.

When trying to configure it to connect to the internet in a bridged configuration, I get an error message when trying to bring up the network interface: [root@VMLinux ~]# /et/init.d/network start Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ] Bringing up interface eth0: Determining IP information for eth0... failed [FAILED] VM is running on a machine that has access to the network, I tried it on two different networks that have DHCP enabled.   I have been considering replacing Ubuntu with OpenBSD to improve the security on my local server. I need to have ssh access to it, and I also need it to serve static web content - so the only ports I need open are 22 and 80. However, when I scan my server for open ports after installing OpenBSD 4.8, and enabling ssh and http at /etc/rc.conf httpd_flags="" sshd_flags="" I discovered that it had several other open ports: Port Scan has started… Port Scanning host: 192.168.56.102 Open TCP Port: 13 daytime Open TCP Port: 22 ssh Open TCP Port: 37 time Open TCP Port: 80 http Open TCP Port: 113 ident ssh (22) and http (80) should be open as I enabled httpd and sshd, but why are the other ports open, and should I worry about them creating additional security vulnerabilities? Should they be open in a default installation?

  Hi, I'd like to use the HP fingerprint sensor on my Elitebook 2530p. The system is a fresh Win7 Enterprise 64-bit and we are looking for an alternative to the HP ProtectTools Security Suite, which seems a bit bloated. We have tried the UPEK ProtectorSuite (both WBF and stand-alone edition) and they say they can't find the fingerprint device. The device shows up in device manager, in the BioMetric system configuration I have enabled logon to Windows and Domain credentials. Are there any other fingerprint login software (free or commercial) that you can recommend. Thanks in advance, Alex

• How can I prevent Ask.com Toolbar from being installed every time Java is updated?

  As many are painfully aware of, Oracle continues to not only bundle the Java installation with the useless Internet browser toolbar from Ask.com, but also enable its installation by default. In addition to the toolbar, Ask also replaces your favourite search engine in your browser with Ask. Furthermore, the Java installation goes as far as to actually recommend installing this useless junk, meaning that any non IT-savvy person is more than likely to leave it checked and install it (after all, it was enabled by default and the friendly Java installer did recommend it, right?). To add insult to injury, even if you remove the Ask Toolbar, you can be sure to see it again soon, when the next Java update hits you (which seem to happen quite often lately, due to loads of security fixes for Java, but that's another story). I'll duly remove the check-mark to install Ask Toolbar, whenever I update Java, but when supporting my family and friends, it's obvious they don't. How can I prevent the pesky Ask.com Toolbar from being installed in the first place?

  I can't access any share from my operating system, including \\localhost and \\127.0.0.1. I have Windows 7. NetBIOS over IP is enabled, other computers in the network can access my shares and other computer's shares, but my operating system cannot access any share. I have installed Windows XP within VMware, and the virtual Windows XP can access all shares including the host shares. I can communicate in other ways like TCP, HTTP and gaming, but not access shares. How to solve this problem?

• Apply Group Policy to Remote Desktop Services users but not when they log on to their local system

  Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

• Volume display for laptop missing after driver update

  I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, and I just updated my audio drivers to be able to use Stereo Mix. It's a SigmaTel audio driver. Prior to the update, whenever I used the hardware buttons to update volume or mute/unmute speakers, it would always have a nice display like this one: But, for volume instead of screen brightness. The hardware buttons still work fortunately, but the volume display is gone. Is there a place I can configure this setting and re-enable it? The speaker icon in task tray was also disabled with the update, but I re-enabled that from the Control Panel. Is this simply gone with the driver update? Thanks for the help!

  I have a Windows XP machine (it is a VM running in Xen) that I would like to backup. I have enabled ClearPageFileAtShutdown by following MS KB 314834. If I cleanly shutdown the XP machine and then mount the drive in another machine (which is trivial since the machine is virtual) I still have a large pagefile.sys. I was hoping that enabling ClearPageFileAtShutdown would result in a pagefile.sys with a size near zero. I have two questions. First, is it possible to have pagefile.sys be deleted, or have a drastic size reduction, at shutdown? Second, can I exclude pagefile.sys from my backup?

• Setting up Kerberos SSO in Windows 2008 network

  We recently introduced Kerberos (SPNEGO) Single Sign-on in our web-portal, and tested it on a Windows network with Windows 2003 domain controller. Now, trying to test it on Windows 2008 R2 controlled network, SSO just doesn't work due to defective tokens. Up to the moment I was pretty sure that there's something wrong about environment and that were NTLM tokens. We double checked IE settings etc, but nothing helped. Then we checked the following settings for both users (logged on a client test-machine, and the one used as a Service Principal): This account supports Kerberos AES 128 bit encryption. This account supports Kerberos AES 256 bit encryption. .. and error message changed to ' GSSException: Failure unspecified at GSS-API level (Mechanism level: Encryption type AES256CTS mode with HMAC SHA1-96 is not supported/enabled) It makes me think that Internet Explorer receives Kerberos tokens at all times, and there's just some configuration missing, or it was ktpass.exe to be incorrectly executed. • 2 sited hosted in NGINX with separate SSL certs. IE8 posting invalid when starting at one site going to the other

  If users with IE8 go directly to www.xyz.com, SSL cert is fine. Users going directly to www.zyx.com have no issues with cert. If users start at one site and go to the other, they get invalid cert with xyz being used on zyx which should not be happening. Reading the forums NGINX has SNI enabled and I have the correct version of OpenSSL to be able to handle multiple certs. IE8 seems to be the issue but these are customer facing sites. Is there a fix to make NGINX work for the customers experiencing the issue.
