• Why does my drive show as 180GB used, but copies only 40GB?

  My computer crashed, so I removed the drive (with Windows XP Professional 32-Bit) and put this drive in another computer running Windows 7 64-bit. Booting with Win7, when going to My Computer it is showing the XP drive as more than 180GB used. So as a quick backup, I'm trying to copy all the disk's content to a folder, but when I start copying, it's showing only 40 GB as the total size of the files to copy. I enabled showing system and hidden files in View options. What could be the problem?

• What is needed for 'Previous Versions' to be visible on the client OS?

  I have servers with Shadow Copies enabled taking snapshots a couple times a day. From the server, if you look at the local devices you can see the Previous Versions being populated reliably. But from remote clients, the ability for an end-user to see the Previous Versions seems to be very hit-or-miss. For the sake of this question you can assume that all my clients are Windows 7 and the Servers are Windows Server 2008 R2. Is there an exhaustive list of everything that is required for end user to see Previous Versions? Are their any requirements for a certain level of share or filesystem permissions, other then read access? Does something need to be open on the firewall, other then what is already in-place for normal Windows networking?

  I am trying to open port 80 and 3690 for HTTP and svnserve respectively. I have Windows Firewall off, and have tried temporarily disabling Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise, to no avail. According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, both ports 80 and 3690 are still blocked. I can't think of what would be blocking them if Windows Firewall and my antivirus are disabled. • Is looking for Wi-Fi access points purely passive?

  Say I carry a Wi-Fi enabled phone or laptop through an area where there are WAPs. Assuming that I don't actively try to connect to them or otherwise interact with them, is it possible for the owner of that WAP to know that I was there? I'm asking this in the context of my earlier question: Looking for MACs on the network I was talking with a friend about my newfound ability to detect phones (and other devices with MAC addresses) on the network, and he pointed out that it might be useful to detect unknown phones on the network; I could use that data to track down anyone who was in my house and brought a Wi-Fi phone with them. So, if I set up a logging fake WAP with no security or encryption, can I glean any useful information about the devices that come into the house? Assuming that the thief doesn't actively try to connect...

  We have several servers they have public IP's, but work together (one is with Load Balancer, orther with Apache Web server, other with MySQL and so on. Most of the ports are fire-walled, so only "local" servers can be connect there. However ALL servers have some ports that must be publicly open. We have SYN Cookies enabled and from time to time we got: possible SYN flooding on port 8080. Sending cookies. Port 8080 is not public. How we can switch OFF SYN Cookies for some ports (e.g. 8080, 3306 etc) or from some sources (e.g. our servers), but in same time SYN Cookies to be switched ON for all other ports, e.g. port 80. • Windows server 2008 - Access Based Enumeration (ABE) not working correctly

  I have a folder shared with permissions of only one user account, admin account and admin group having access to it, but when I open the shared area from a second user account which dose not have access to it, the folder is still visible to the second account despite ABE being enabled on it and all other parent directories/folders and even the the drive. The user can't access the shared folder (which is what I want), but I'd like the folder to also be invisible to that user, just to make it look cleaner and theirs no confusion between what they can access and what they cannot. How would I stop the folder appearing for users who don't have permissions to use it? Thanks in advanced. EDIT: I've just added the second user account to the permissions list but denied it access so that the account definitely has no permissions to access it in any way but that's still not hiding it.

• VPN Configuration

  How can I allow incoming connections on a Windows 7 machine that is connected to VPN? I have some services listening on certain ports that I have forwarded from my router. When the VPN is disconnected, I can connect to these services from my internal network as well as from the Internet without issue. When I connect my VPN however, I am still able to access the ports from my internal network, but not remotely. I think I need a split tunnel setup, and there is an option in the VPN settings to Use Default Gateway on remote network. I want this option enabled so all my traffic is routed through the VPN, but I want incoming connections to be allowed on my internal network IP from the Internet. Is there some hybrid way to set this up with routing?

• Cherokee high virtual memory usage even after disabling I/O Cache

  I've Ubuntu 10.04LTS 64-bit running on a openvz container and Cherokee 1.0.8 compiled from source. The virtual memory usage of cherokee-worker is around 430 MB even after disabling I/O cache from Advanced - I/O Cache - NOT enabled. Is this issue particular to openvz?   I need to copy a file from a Windows 2003 server to a WebDAV folder (on the same server, if it matters). This operation will be performed via a batch script executed via Scheduled Tasks. I've enabled the WebClient service on the server. So far I've determined that I can do it like this: net use x: http://host/path copy c:\path\myfile.txt x: net use x: /delete 1) Is there a simpler way than creating a temporary mapped drive? Will it work via a batch file when no user is logged in? 2) Is there anything I should know about enabling the WebClient service on my server? Previously it was disabled, which I assume is default.

• Why does IIS refuse to serve ASP.NET content?

  My Windows Server 2003 Std server refuses to server ASP.NET content. It serves regular html just fine but anything .net, even a one line html file with an ASPX extention fails silently. Things I've tried: Nothing in the event log or IIS WWW logs when it fails. Fiddler shows no response I reinstalled .NET with C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727aspnet_regiis.exe -U C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727aspnet_regiis.exe -I I give obscenely high permissions on everything I can think of (full control, read, write, etc.) to all possibly relevant users (IUSER*, ASP.NET, etc.). I confirmed that ASP.Net v1 and v2 Web Service Extensions are "allowed" in IIS Confirmed that the Server Manager had IIS and ASP.Net roles enabled Again: this is the scenario: http://localhost/Test/Default.htm <-- Works great! http://localhost/Test/Default.aspx <-- Bombs silently with no message at all Any guidance will be much appreciated! • Redirect traffic to local address so iOS speedtest app measures LAN speed

  I have mounted a Speedtest Mini server on a local LAMP, so I can test my LAN speeds effortlessly just by opening the URL with a Flash enabled web browser, the thing is, I want my iOS and Android devices to test with the LAN server too, not with the WAN, as I'm trying to measure LAN-Only performance. Is there a way so I can redirect the traffic intended to an specific external IP (The one of the real server) to my local server?. I know the servers IP as a short Wireshark analysis gave me the data, but still searching for a way to make that redirect. I have Jailbreak and root on my devices, so playing with system files is not a problem. I've tried mounting a proxy and making redirects by the hosts file and domain names, but it looks like Ookla's app relies on IP address only.

• Can't see a Windows XP computer on the network

  I have two PC's connected to the same router. One is running Vista Home Premium and the other is running XP Pro. I'm trying to reach the shares of second PC from the first PC. I've enabled file sharing on the XP PC, I've disabled firewall and defender, and I can successfully ping it from the Vista PC. Both computers are set to the same workgroup "WORKGROUP". However, if I try to type "\\192.168.1.2" in Windows Explorer (192.168.1.2 being the IP address of the XP PC), I get a message: "Windows can't access \\192.168.1.2... Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified error". And If I type "net view \\192.168.1.2" in command prompt, I get "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found." Am I missing something trivial?

  So nagios can be good at graphing particular resource utilisation or other metrics, but I'm looking for a tool that can output a chart or other graphical representation of how much CPU time/CPU utilisation /all/ services on a server are currently consuming. I think New Relic could probably achieve this to an extent, but I was wondering if there was a popular open source app used for this. In case I am explaining this in a bad way, my actual problem is that I have a shared server with suexec enabled (ie. httpd cgi running under multiple user accounts). I'd like to know which users are using the most CPU during periods of the day.

• Cannot get Virtual PC to install on my machine

  I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I ran the tool to check that hardware virtualization is enabled, and it is (i7-2600). I ran the proper version of the Virtual PC download (Windows 7 Professional x64) and I can see the Windows Virtual PC (KB958559) update in my installed updates list. The .msu file runs fine without errors, but even after multiple reboots I can't actually find a trace of Virtual PC anywhere. There is nothing in program files, the start menu, or system32. Am I missing a step?

• Drupal7 doesn't detect MySQL on CentOS, but Wordpress3 does?

  Hey guys. I'm running CentOS 5.5 here with Apache2, PHP5, and MySQL 5. My wordpress install on the same system runs perfectly, but the drupal7 install script only detects SQLite. The mysql module is enabled in php.ini, so that isn't the problem. Do you think it could be something with Drupal 7, or my PHP install? I tested it on localhost (I'm essentially running ArchLinux with Apache) and it installs just fine. I don't see a difference between my local php.ini and my server php.ini. I get this when accessing install.php on the server. SQLite The type of database your Drupal data will be stored in. Your PHP configuration only supports a single database type, so it has been automatically selected. Edit: The mysql PDO module is installed already.

INnodb Buffer Pool is set to 10GB. tuning-primer shows the following: QUERY CACHE Query cache is enabled Current query_cache_size = 512 M Current query_cache_used = 501 M Current query_cache_limit = 4 M Current Query cache Memory fill ratio = 97.87 % Current query_cache_min_res_unit = 4 K However, 9418108 queries have been removed from the query cache due to lack of memory Perhaps you should raise query_cache_size That is over 9million queries removed. System uptime is 8 days. Should I remove the Query Cache altogether? Our db is always under heavy I/O. tia

• Remotely start VNC server on computer with no Admin password

  I'm trying to remotely access a particular computer of mine and it seems that VNC has stopped. I can tell that the computer is still running because I can VNC into another machine on the same network and can see my target machine under the Network section in Windows Explorer and can also ping it succesfully. To summarize: I own the target computer I am currently too far to physically access it Remote Desktop Connection feature of Windows is not enabled The computer normally runs a VNC server, but it seems to have stopped The computer is definitely on and connected to the network The computer has no password on the Admin account I can VNC into other computers on the same LAN Given these conditions how can I get into the target to open VNC server, or even just reboot the target (VNC should open on startup)? I have tried PsExec and get "access is denied", and also tried "Connect to another computer.." from the Computer Management console and also get "access is denied".

  I recently just moved to Windows 7 and I noticed that many of my older third-party apps didn't look so good at the high DPI I had set (150dpi versus the typical 96dpi). After searching the web for ways to get my apps to look good again, I stumbled upon the "Windows XP style DPI scaling" option. I enabled it and suddenly the apps looked good again. While I'm happy, I'm also suspicious. What did I lose by enabling this feature? Could someone explain to me the differences in how the screen is rendered with and without this feature, or explain the trade offs of using it?

• How to prevent firefox from updating

  I have firefox 3.6.x in Mint Linux. For physical problems -- eyes and color, I want to keep this version and not do any updates ever to it. I don't know if it is a firefox or linux issue, but nothing seems to work. It should not be rocket scientist enabled. :P This is what I have tried: Update Manager and added to ignore package --firef0x* Fully removed all traces of firefox and reinstalled 3.6.28 In firefox, set the upgrade options (3) of them to unselected and saved. Scanned computer for firef* to insure all traces were removed, to include /usr/bin/firefox. Using Mint Linux 9, otherwise fully upgraded for packages. That's the main things I've done. My major issues is the later versions of that software are almost impossible for me to see.
