  • OOP Design Question - Where/When do you Validate properties?

    I have read a few books on OOP DDD/PoEAA/Gang of Four and none of them seem to cover the topic of validation - it seems to be always assumed that data is valid. I gather from the answers to this post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1651964/oop-design-question-validating-properties) that a client should only attempt to set a valid property value on a domain object. This person has asked a similar question that remains unanswered: http://bytes.com/topic/php/answers/789086-php-oop-setters-getters-data-validation#post3136182 So how do you ensure it is valid? Do you have a 'validator method' alongside every getter and setter? isValidName() setName() getName() I seem to be missing some key basic knowledge about OOP data validation - can you point me to a book that covers this topic in detail? - ie. covering different types of validation / invariants/ handling feedback / to use Exceptions or not etc

  • Question about malware-sites: How can I be in danger?

    Hi people!! My english is horrible but i will do the best to be as accurate as posible. I have been reading here (in superuser) some questions about the necessity of antivirus software in Windows and some doubts arise. As far as i know (and imagine) virus software can only be harmful if I download any type of infected executable file and then I RUN IT. I mean that if i have the infected executable in my desktop but i leave it there for years without clicking it, I won't be in danger... My question is: How can i be in danger browsing the so called "malware pages or sites"??. If i am just browsing an "infected site" how could I be affected by a virus. In any moment the browser is asking me for the permission to download "something", so how could it be?? Although i don't give permission to the browser to download 'something' is data being downloaded to my computer?? Its some kind of cookie? I will ask in another way... What is the level of riskiness if i get inffected in a malware site compared with the level of an executable virus?? Thanks a lot!

  • Self hosted PHP shopping cart with no storefront?

    I am looking for a shopping cart to implement on a simple website instead of the default paypal cart that is used with their add to cart buttons (I don't like the non-styeable new tab/window cart). However, I really like the ability to simply add the buttons to existing pages. I do not have a lot of products and do not want to deal with a storefront and complex templates. The main features I need: Self-hosted Easy to implement with existing website (copy and paste button code, etc.) Ability to have variations on one button with different prices (dropdown with sizes, colors, etc.) Ability to track inventory and disallow out of stock orders Ability to pass cart details to PayPal Website Payments Standard I have seen most of the large storefront options: oscommerce, zencart, cubecart, opencart, prestashop, magento, cs-cart, lemonstand, etc. but these are way more than I need. I don't need the storefront or customer accounts or templated pages, etc. I have seen e-junkie, which is not far off from what I would like, but it is not self-hosted and I would prefer an in-site cart (or dynamic overlay cart) rather than a lightbox or new tab/window cart. I also love the paypal minicart and its implementation, but there is no way to track inventory. So, does anyone have any recommendations that might meet these requests?

    If I wrote 1) a C# SQL db app (a simple program consisting of a gui over some forms with logic for interfacing with the sql db) 2) for home use, that doesn't do any network communication 3) that uses a simple, reliable, and appropriate sql db 4) whose gui is properly separated from the logic 5) that has complete and dependable input data validation 6) that has been completely tested so that 100% of logic bugs were eliminated ... and then if the program was installed and run by random users on their random Windows computers Q1) What types of technical (non-procedural) problems and support situations are most likely to occur, and how likely are they? Q2) Are there more/other things I could do in the first place to prevent those problems and also minimize the amount of user support required? I know some answers will apply to my specific platforms (C#, SQL, Windows, etc) and some won't. Please be as specific as is possible. Mitch Wheat gave me some very valuable advice below, but I'm now offering the bounty because I am hoping to get a better picture of the kinds of things that I'm most reasonably likely to encounter.     I have a dynamic website with friendly URLs. Example: Instead of /user.php?id=123, I have /user/123 Instead of /index.php?category=fishes, I have /fishes But, how do I handle non-existent subdirectories such as /about/123? Currently it gives a 200 success instead of a 404 not found error. Is there a way to deal with non-existent subdirectories in Apache config and at the same time allow for friendly URLs? Or do I have to handle this individually for each PHP script?

  • ASP.NET MVC Return to Previous Page

    I have a basic Edit method in my controller that redirects back to a top level listing (“Index”) when the edit succeeds. Standard setup after scaffolding. I am trying to change this Edit method to redirect back to the previous page (not Index). Since my Edit method is not using the default mapped input parameter “id”, I am using that to pass the previous URL. In my Edit “get” method, I use this line to grab the previous URL and it works fine: ViewBag.ReturnUrl = Request.UrlReferrer.AbsoluteUri; I send this return URL to the Edit “post” method by using my form tag like this: @using (Html.BeginForm(new { id = ViewBag.ReturnUrl })) Now this is where the wheels fall off. I can't seem to get the URL parsed from the id parameter properly. UPDATE**** Using Gary's example as a guide, I changing my parameter name from "id" to "returnUrl" and used a hidden field to pass my parameter. Lesson: Only use the id parameter how it was intended to be used...keep it simple. It works now...     I came across the following URL today: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/inmarin/detail??blogid=122&entry_id=64497 Notice the doubled question mark at the beginning of the query string: ??blogid=122&entry_id=64497 My browser didn't seem to have any trouble with it, and running a quick bookmarklet: javascript:alert(document.location.search); just gave me the query string shown above. Is this a valid URL? The reason I'm being so pedantic (assuming that I am) is because I need to parse URLs like this for query parameters, and supporting doubled question marks would require some changes to my code. Obviously if they're in the wild, I'll need to support them; I'm mainly curious if it's my fault for not adhering to URL standards exactly, or if it's in fact a non-standard URL.

  • Should I always encapsulate an internal data structure entirely?

    Please consider this class: class ClassA{ private Thing[] things; // stores data // stuff omitted public Thing[] getThings(){ return things; } } This class exposes the array it uses to store data, to any client code interested. I did this in an app I'm working on. I had a ChordProgression class that stores a sequence of Chords (and does some other things). It had a Chord[] getChords() method that returned the array of chords. When the data structure had to change (from an array to an ArrayList), all client code broke. This made me think - maybe the following approach is better: class ClassA{ private Thing[] things; // stores data // stuff omitted public Thing[] getThing(int index){ return things[index]; } public int getDataSize(){ return things.length; } public void setThing(int index, Thing thing){ things[index] = thing; } } Instead of exposing the data structure itself, all of the operations offered by the data structure are now offered directly by the class enclosing it, using public methods that delegate to the data structure. When the data structure changes, only these methods have to change - but after they do, all client code still works. Note that collections more complex than arrays might require the enclosing class to implement even more than three methods just to access the internal data structure. Is this approach common? What do you think of this? What downsides does it have other? Is it reasonable to have the enclosing class implement at least three public methods just to delegate to the inner data structure?

  • To track or not to track user created images for display in a dynamic website?

    I have a website that allows user to upload and display images. Currently, I am not using a database to track these user images. A folder having the user id as the folder name is created for each user and under each folder, the image files are labelled numerically with filenames ranging from 01.jpg to 20.jpg. Up to 20 such images can be displayed on each user page. I am using javascript to hide these images in case of any of them is absent. I have seen many websites having user images with unique random filenames and possibly tracking these files with a database Since obscurity is not something that I need for these web accessible images, is there any reason why I should track them with a DB? I am not sure if a reduction of 404 errors is a good enough reason to justify the added complexity of maintaining a database or can anyone enlighten me?

    Hello, May be my question is stupid. But i would like to get it cleared. We know that functions are loaded in memory only once and when you create new objects, only instance variables gets created, functions are never created. My question is, say suppose there is server and all clients access a method named createCustomer(). Say suppose all clients do something which fired createCustomer on server. So, if the method is in middle of execution and new client fires it. Will the new request be put on wait? or new request also will start executing the method? How does it all get managed when there is only one copy of function in memory? No book mentions answers to this type of questions. So i am posting here where i am bound to get answers :).

    How can I Submit client side computer user's answers(to a multiple choice question) to the server using JAVA I have a centralized server and about 1000 client systems. In these 1000 systems students take multiple choice quiz at at time (in some 2 hrs time). Now i've to send all these answers of these questions to the server in an asynchronous threaded queue when the student answer each question (all 1000 students) Also client have to wait if the server connection is a failure, in this case students should be able to continue taking quiz/exam. When I get the connection these answers in queue should be submitted to the server system. How can I solve this problem? Please suggest/help me in this.

Frequently, a lot of gameplay videos from big studios have small subtitled text at the lower part of the screen, reading something like: Pre-Alpha Gameplay -- Footage not Final Game Footage not Final Pre-Alpha, Game here is not final Is there some sort of reason they do this? Is there some sort of legal ramification that they need to go through by adding this? I have especially seen some gameplay vids whose titles are "Alpha x.x.x", yet still, in the video itself, it always something like "footage not final, game may change".

  • C# Basic Multi-Threading Question: Call Method on Thread A from Thread B (Thread B started from Thre

    What is the best way to accomplish this: The main thread (Thread A) creates two other threads (Thread B and Thread C). Threads B and C do heavy disk I/O and eventually need to pass in resources they created to Thread A to then call a method in an external DLL file which requires the thread that created it to be called correctly so only Thread A can call it. The only other time I ever used threads was in a Windows Forms application, and the invoke methods were just what I needed. This program does not use Windows Forms, and as such there are no Control.Invoke methods to use. I have noticed in my testing that if a variable is created in Thread A, I have no trouble accessing and modifying it from Thread B/C which seems very wrong to me. With Winforms, I was sure it threw errors for trying to access things created on other threads. I know it is unsafe to change things from multiple threads, but I really hoped .NET would forbid it altogether to ensure safe coding. Does .NET do this, and I am just missing the boat, or does it only do it with WinForm apps? Since it does seemingly allow this, do I do something like an OS would do, create a flag and monitor it from Thread A to see if it changes. If it does, then call the method. Doesnt the event handler essentially do this, so could an event be used somehow called on the main thread?

Should I, as a Java greenhorn, invest time in learning Java language (not talking about the core JVM, which definitely will survive anything, and worth investments), or concentrate on Scala, Groovy, or other hybrid languages on the JVM platform (I've came into Java world from PHP/Ruby).     I have a list of questions and I can display them ok using a ui:repeat, but after clicking the Edit button the rerendered inputText is given the wrong question.id.   • Question about decorator pattern and the abstract decorator class?

    This question was asked already here, but rather than answering the specific question, descriptions of how the decorator pattern works were given instead. I'd like to ask it again because the answer is not immediately evident to me just by reading how the decorator pattern works (I've read the wikipedia article and the section in the book Head First Design Patterns). Basically, I want to know why an abstract decorator class must be created which implements (or extends) some interface (or abstract class). Why can't all the new "decorated classes" simply implement (or extend) the base abstract object themselves (instead of extending the abstract decorator class)? To make this more concrete I'll use the example from the design patterns book dealing with coffee beverages: There is an abstract component class called Beverage Simple beverage types such as HouseBlend simply extend Beverage To decorate beverage, an abstract CondimentDecorator class is created which extends Beverage and has an instance of Beverage Say we want to add a "milk" condiment, a class Milk is created which extends CondimentDecorator I'd like to understand why we needed the CondimentDecorator class and why the class Milk couldn't have simply extended the Beverage class itself and been passed an instance of Beverage in its constructor. Hopefully this is clear...if not I'd simply like to know why is the abstract decorator class necessary for this pattern? Thanks. Edit: I tried to implement this, omitting the abstract decorator class, and it seems to still work. Is this abstract class present in all descriptions of this pattern simply because it provides a standard interface for all of the new decorated classes?

    To be frank, this is a homework question, so I'll tell you my opinion. Can you let me know my mistakes rather than giving me the solution? This is the question : Assume a restaurant that only offers the following two types of meals: (a) a full meal and (b)an economic meal. The full meal consists of the following food items and is served in the following order: 1. Appetizer 2. Drink 3. Main dish 4. Dessert Meanwhile the economic meal consists of the following food items and is served in the following order: 1. Drink 2. Main dish Identify the most appropriate design pattern that can be used to allow a customer to only order using one of the two types of meals provided and that the meal components must be served in the given order. I'm confused between the Factory and the Iterator and using them both together. Using the factory Pattern we can create the two meals full and economic and provide the user with with a base object class that will decide upon. But how can we enforce the ordering of the elements, I thought of using the iterator along that will iterate through the the composite of the two created factories sort of speak. What do you think?
