  • What makes the availability of both primitive and object-wrapped values in JavaScript useful?

    - by Delan Azabani
I wrote a blog post a while ago detailing how the availability of both primitive and object-wrapped value types in JavaScript (for things such as Number, String and Boolean) causes trouble, including but not limited to type-casting to a boolean (e.g. object-wrapped NaN, "" and false actually type-cast to true). My question is, with all this confusion and problems, is there any benefit to JavaScript having both types of values for the built-in classes?

  • Does Java support default parameter values?

    - by gnavi
I came across some Java code that had the following structure: public MyParameterizedFunction(String param1, int param2) { this(param1, param2, false); } public MyParameterizedFunction(String param1, int param2, boolean param3) { //use all three parameters here } I know that in C++ I can assign a parameter a default value. For example: void MyParameterizedFunction(String param1, int param2, bool param3=false); Does Java support this kind of syntax? Are there any reasons why this two step syntax is preferable?

  • Using a constructor for return.

    - by Fecal Brunch
Hi, Just a quick question. I've written some code that returns a custom class Command, and the code I've written seems to work fine. I was wondering if there are any reasons that I shouldn't be doing it this way. It's something like this: Command Behavior::getCommand () { char input = 'x'; return Command (input, -1, -1); } Anyway, I read that constructors aren't meant to have a return value, but this works in g++. Thanks for any advice, Rhys

  • Are "proxy properties" good style?

    - by erlando
I have a class with a string property that's actually several strings joined with a separator. I'm wondering if it is good form to have a proxy property like this: public string ActualProperty { get { return actualProperty; } set { actualProperty = value; } } public string[] IndividualStrings { get { return ActualProperty.Split(.....); } set { // join strings from array in propval .... ; ActualProperty = propval; } } Is there any risks I have overlooked?

  • java api design - NULL or Exception

    - by srini.venigalla
Is it better to return a null value or throw an exception from an API method? Returning a null requires ugly null checks all over, and cause a major quality problem if the return is not checked. Throwing an exception forces the user to code for the faulty condition, but since Java exceptions bubble up and force the caller code to handle them, in general, using custom exceptions may be a bad idea (specifically in java). Any sound and practical advice?

  • Can I make a LaTeX macro 'return' a filename?

    - by drfrogsplat
I'm writing my thesis/dissertation and since its an on-going work I don't always have the actual images ready for the figures I put into my document, but for various reasons want to automatically have it substitute a dummy figure in place when the included graphics file doesn't exist. E.g. I can do something like \includegraphics[width=8cm]{\chapdir/figures/fluxcapacitor} (where \chapdir is a macro for my 'current' chapter directory, e.g. \def\chapdir{./ch_timetravel} and if there's no ./ch_timetravel/figures/fluxcapacitor.jpg it'll insert ./commands/dummy.jpg instead. I've structured my macros (perhaps naïvely?) so that I have a macro (\figFileOrDummy) that determines the appropriate file to include by checking if the argument provided to it exists, so that I can call \includegraphics[properties]{\figFileOrDummy{\chapdir/figures/fluxcapacitor}}. Except I'm getting various errors depending on how I try to call this, which seem to suggest that I'm approaching the problem in a fundamentally flawed way as far as 'good LaTeX programming' goes. Here's the macro to check if the file exists (and 'return' either filename or the dummy filename): \newcommand{\figFileOrDummy}[1]{% % Figure base name (no extension) to be used if the file exists \def\fodname{#1}% \def\dummyfig{commands/dummy}% % Check if output is PS (.EPS) or PDF (.JPG/.PDF/.PNG/...) figures \ifx\pdfoutput\undefined% % EPS figures only \IfFileExists{\fodname.eps}{}{\def\fodname{\dummyfig}}% \else% % Check existence of various extensions: PDF, TIF, TIFF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, MPS \def\figtest{0}% flag below compared to this value \IfFileExists{\fodname.pdf}{\def\figfilenamefound{1}}{\def\figfilenamefound{0}}% \IfFileExists{\fodname.jpg}{\def\figfilenamefound{1}}{}% \IfFileExists{\fodname.png}{\def\figfilenamefound{1}}{}% % and so on... % If no files found matching the filename (flag is 0) then use the dummy figure \ifx\figfilenamefound\figtest% \def\fodname{\dummyfig}% \fi% \fi% % 'return' the filename \fodname% }% Alternatively, here's a much simpler version which seems to have similar problems: \newcommand{\figFileOrDummy}[1]{% \def\dummyfig{commands/dummy}% \dummyfig% } The \def commands seems to be processed after the expansion of the macro they're trying to define, so it ends up being \def {commands/dummy}... (note the space after \def) and obviously complains. Also it seems to treat the literal contents of the macro as the filename for \includegraphics, rather than resolving/expanding it first, so complains that the file '\def {commands/dummy}... .png' doesn't exist.. I've tried also doing something like \edef\figfilename{\figFileOrDummy{\chapdir/figures/fluxcapacitor}} to try to force it to make \figfilename hold just the value rather than the full macro, but I get an Undefined control sequence error complaining the variables I'm trying to \def in the \figFileOrDummy macro are undefined. So my question is either How do I make this macro expand properly?; or If this is the wrong way of structuring my macros, how should I actually structure such a macro, in order to be able to insert dummy/real figures automatically?; or Is there a package that already handles this type of thing nicely that I've overlooked? I feel like I'm missing something pretty fundamental here...

  • Why isn't this infinite recursion? How does default variable initialization work in VB.NET?

    - by froadie
I just made an interesting mistake in my code: Dim endColumn As Integer = startColumn + endColumn - 1 The code was actually supposed to be: Dim endColumn As Integer = startColumn + numColumns - 1 The interesting thing is, I would think that this code should be recursive and loop indefinitely, as the initialization of endColumn sort of calls itself. However, it seems that the code just treats the uninitialized variable as a 0 and so I get startColumn + 0 - 1. What is happening here behind the scenes? When does a variable get assigned a default value?

  • Get return values from a stored procedure in c# (login process)

    - by Jin
    Hi all, I am trying to use a Stored Procedure which takes two parameters (login, pw) and returns the user info. If I execute the SP manually, I get Session_UID User_Group_Name Sys_User_Name ------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- - NULL Administrators NTMSAdmin No rows affected. (1 row(s) returned) @RETURN_VALUE = 0 Finished running [dbo].[p_SYS_Login]. But with the code below, I only get the return value. do you know how to get the other values shown above like Session_UID, User_Group_Name, and Sys_User_Name ? if you see the commented part below code. I tried to add some output parameters but it doesn't work with incorrect number of parameters error. string strConnection = Settings.Default.ConnectionString; using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(strConnection)) { using (SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand()) { SqlDataReader rdr = null; cmd.Connection = conn; cmd.CommandText = "p_SYS_Login"; //cmd.CommandText = "p_sys_Select_User_Group"; cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; SqlParameter paramReturnValue = new SqlParameter(); paramReturnValue.ParameterName = "@RETURN_VALUE"; paramReturnValue.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.Int; paramReturnValue.SourceColumn = null; paramReturnValue.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue; //SqlParameter paramGroupName = new SqlParameter("@User_Group_Name", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50); //paramGroupName.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output; //SqlParameter paramUserName = new SqlParameter("@Sys_User_Name", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50); //paramUserName.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output; cmd.Parameters.Add(paramReturnValue); //cmd.Parameters.Add(paramGroupName); //cmd.Parameters.Add(paramUserName); cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Sys_Login", textUserID.Text); cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Sys_Password", textPassword.Text); try { conn.Open(); object result = cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); int returnValue = (int)cmd.Parameters["@RETURN_VALUE"].Value; if (returnValue == 0) { Hide(); Program.MapForm.Show(); } else if (returnValue == 1) { MessageBox.Show("The username or password you entered is incorrect", "NTMS Login", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Warning); } else if (returnValue == 2) { MessageBox.Show("This account is disabled", "NTMS Login", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Warning); } else { MessageBox.Show("Database error.   • How to find missing alpha values in sets of data within same table in SQL

    - by Jeff
I have a table of many values where one column has the WO Number, and another column has the Resource ID. I need to be able to find all the WO numbers that do not have a resource value of "RW". Here is an example of the typical information. I need to be able to know that work order 5678 does not have an "RW" Resource ID. WO Number - Resource ID 1234 - IN 1234 - WE 1234 - AS 1234 - RW 5678 - PR 5678 - WE 5678 - IN 5678 - AS

    - by Shehi
Code is here: http://jsfiddle.net/jf7t2/1/ Please run it on the latest versions of all browsers, and see for yourself. When the button is clicked, on: on Chrome (and Safari of course) it just doesn't select anything, instead creates some ghostly empty option on Firefox and Opera, it works the way I expect and want it to work, resets the element value on Explorer, it does nothing So, which one is expected behaviour? Thanks.

  • At most how many customized P3 attributes could be added into Agile?

    - by Jie Chen
I have one customer/Oracle Partner Consultant asking me such question: how many customized attributes can be allowed to add to Agile's subclass Page Three? I never did research against this because Agile User Guide never says this and theoretically Agile supports unlimited amount of customized attributes, unless the browser itself cannot handle them in allocated memory. However my customers says when to add almost 1000 attributes, the browser (Web Client) will not show any Page Three attributes, including all the out-of-box attributes. Let's see why. Analysis It is horrible to add 1000 attributes manually. Let's do it by a batch SQL like below to add them to Item's subclass Page Three tab. Do not execute below SQL because it will not take effect due to your different node id. Check here http://ora-01795.ora-code.com If you need Oracle Agile's final solution, please contact Oracle Agile Support. Performance Below two screenshot are jvm heap usage from before-SQL and after-SQL. We can see there is no big memory gap between two cases. So definitely there is no performance impact to Agile Application Server unless you have more than 1000 attributes for EACH of your dozens of  subclasses. And for client, 1000 attributes should not impact the browser's performance because in HTML we only use dt and dd for each attribute's pair: label and value. It is quite lightweight.

  • can not set the bool value of app setting

    - by user262325
Hello everyone I use the codes below to read and write a bool value from my application: -(void)SaveAppSetting; {     NSUserDefaults *defaults=[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];     bool b=true;     [defaults setBool:b forKey:@"AnyKey"]; [defaults synchronize]; } -(void)LoadAppSetting; {     NSUserDefaults *defaults=[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];     bool b=[defaults boolForKey: @"AnyKey"] ; } I found that "LoadAppSetting" worked well, it could get the correct value of item with key "AnyKey". The function "SaveAppSetting" looked like no function, it reported no error, but it can not change value of the item with key "AnyKey". "AnyKey" setting in Setting bundle is item Dictionary Type String PSToggleSwitchSpecifier Title String AnyKey's Title Key String AnyKey DefaultValue Boolean Checked Is there any person met the same problem? • Insert rows into MySQL table while changing one value

    - by Jonathan
Hey all- I have a MySQL table that defines values for a specific customer type. | CustomerType | Key Field 1 | Key Field 2 | Value | Each customer type has 10 values associated with it (based on the other two key fields). I am creating a new customer type (TypeB) that is exactly the same as another customer type (TypeA). I want to insert "TypeB" as the CustomerType but then just copy the values from TypeA's rows for the other three fields. Is there an SQL insert statement to make this happen? Somthing like: insert into customers(customer_type, key1, key2, value) values "TypeB" union select key1, key2, value from customers where customer_type = "TypeA" Thanks- Jonathan

  • Document key usage in Dictionary

    - by phq
How can I document the key usage in a Dictionary so that it shows in Visual studio when coding using that object? I'm looking for something like: /// <param name="SpecialName">That Special Name</param> public Dictionary<string, string> bar; So far the best attempt has been to write my own class: public class SpecialNameDictionary : IDictionary<string, string> { private Dictionary<string, string> data = new Dictionary<string, string>(); /// <param name="specialName">That Special Name</param> public string this[string specialName] { get { return data[specialName]; } } } But It adds a lot of code that doesn't do anything. Additionally I must retype every Dictionary method to make it compile. Is there a better way to achive the above?

  • Two collections manyToOne to same primary key

    - by Ethiel
Hi, guys, I'm coding a web page in Hibernate-JPA and Oracle. I need the following: I have two classes: Place and Home. I need two collections of type Place in every Home: I do the following: Home: @ManyToOne @JoinColumn(name="ID_PLACES") private List<Places>places1; @ManyToOne @JoinColumn(name="ID_PLACES") private List<Places>Places2; However, hibernate got an exception (repeated column) and forces to me to mapping with insert and update to false. How Can I get Two ManyToOne relationship to same primary key with insert a true?.

  • Is this a good approach to execute a list of operations on a data structure in Python?

    - by Sridhar Iyer
I have a dictionary of data, the key is the file name and the value is another dictionary of its attribute values. Now I'd like to pass this data structure to various functions, each of which runs some test on the attribute and returns True/False. One approach would be to call each function one by one explicitly from the main code. However I can do something like this: #MYmodule.py class Mymodule: def MYfunc1(self): ... def MYfunc2(self): ... #main.py import Mymodule ... #fill the data structure ... #Now call all the functions in Mymodule one by one for funcs in dir(Mymodule): if funcs[:2]=='MY': result=Mymodule.__dict__.get(funcs)(dataStructure) The advantage of this approach is that implementation of main class needn't change when I add more logic/tests to MYmodule. Is this a good way to solve the problem at hand? Are there better alternatives to this solution?

  • How do I get the NextVal from an oracle Sequence thru NHibernate

    - by trainer
    I am working on c# .net 4.0 and using NHibernate to talk with an Oracle DB. You would think something as simple as this is already addressed somewhere but sadly its not. I need the NextVal from an Oracle sequence. I do not need to insert it a database as part of an Id or Primary key. I just need to use the next val on the c# side. Can somebody help me out with xml mapping and C# file(or a link) to achieve this. Thanks. Something like int NextValueOfSequence = GetNextValueofSequence(); public int GetNextValueOfSequence() { // Access NHibernate to return the next value of the sequence. }

  • Value [...] not a valid choice, django-updown

  • What is the correct way to use Chef-server's 'validation key'?

    - by Socio
It seems to me that the recommended way of adding clients to a chef server - or my understanding of it - is flawed. from the docs: When the chef-client runs, it checks if it has a client key. If the client key does not exist, it then attempts to "borrow" the validation client's identity to register itself with the server. In order to do that, the validation client's private key needs to be copied to the host and placed in /etc/chef/validation.pem. So the "validation key" is basically the superuser credential, allowing anyone who possesses it full access to the chef server? Am I reading this right? Surely the correct model would be for clients to generate their own keypair, and submit the public key to the chef server. Clients should never need access to this superuser "validation key". How can I do it in this, more secure, manner?

  • Should I give the answer to a failed interview coding exercise?

    - by GlenH7
We had a senior level interview candidate fail a nuance of the FizzBuzz question*. I mean, really, utterly, completely, failed the question - not even close. I even coached him through to thinking about using a loop and that 3 and 5 were really worth considering as special cases. He blew it. Just for QA purposes, I gave the same exact question to three teammates; gave them 5 minutes; and then came back to collect their pseudo-code. All of them nailed it and hadn't seen the question before. Two asked what the trick was... On a different logic exercise, the candidate showed some understanding of some of the features available within the language he chose to use (C#). So it's not as if he had never written a line of code. But his logic still stunk. My question is whether or not I should have given him the answer to the logic questions. He knew he blew them, and acknowledged it later in the interview. On the other hand, he never asked for the answer or what I was expecting to see. I know coding exercises can be used to set candidates up for failure (again, see second link from above). And I really tried to help him home in on answering the core of the question. But this was a senior level candidate and Fizz-Buzz is, frankly, ridiculously easy even with accounting for interview jitters. I felt like I should have shown him a way of solving the problem so that he could at least learn from the experience. But again, he didn't ask. What's the right way to handle that situation? *Okay, that's not the link to the actual FizzBuzz question, but it is a good P.SE discussion around FizzBuzz and links to the various aspects of it.

  • How to explain a layperson why a developer should not be interrupted while neck-deep in coding?

    - by András Szepesházi
If you just consider the second part of my question, "Why a developer should not be interrupted while neck-deep in coding", that has been discussed a number of times by smart people. Heck, even the co-founder of SO, Joel Spolsky, wrote a blog post about "getting in the zone" and "being knocked out of the zone" and why it takes an average of 15 minutes to achieve productivity when participating in complex, software development related tasks. So I think the why has been established. What I'm interested in is how to explain all that to somebody who doesn't know beans about Beans (khmm I mean software development). How to tell the wife, or the funny guy from accounting at the workplace, or the long time friend who pings you on Skype every 30 minutes with a "Wazzzzzzup?!", that all the interruptions have a much deeper impact on your work than the obvious 30 seconds they took from your time. Obviously you can't explain it by sentences like "I have to juggle a lot of variable names in my short term memory" unless you want to be the target of blank stares or friendly abuse. I'd like to be able to explain all that to non-developers in a way that will make them clearly understand - without being offensive, elitist or too technical.
