• Play 2 with Scala or Java?

  I want to develop a big personal project using Play 2 Framework. I am expert with Java language but it seems, with the few articles I read that Play 2 works perfectly and especially with Scala. I've never worked with Scala but I already learned concept as closures, functional programming etc... Learning it would be interesting. I am really motivated for but I wonder if there are some people who have started coding with Play2/Java and have changed for Play2/Scala that could explain their major concrete advantages.

• What is upcasting/downcasting?

  When learning about polymorphism you commonly see something like this class Base { int prv_member; virtual void fn(){} } class Derived : Base { int more_data; virtual void fn(){} } What is upcasting or downcasting? Is (Derived*)base_ptr; an upcast or downcast? I call it upcast because you are going away from the base into something more specific. Other people told me it is a downcast because you are going down a hierarchy into something specific with the top being the root. But other people seem to call it what i call it. When converting a base ptr to a derived ptr is it called upcasting or downcasting? and if someone can link to an official source or explain why its called that than great.

• What's the best technology for a medium complexity web application?

  I'm planning to work on a web application of reasonable complexity and am wondering what technology to go with. It will probably start with one person, but there will be 2 or 3 more eventually. My first requirement is to be able to do this as quickly as possible - preferably with as less code as possible. Secondly requirement is that it should be able to scale easily. I have worked with .NET and PHP. So, I am thinking about ASP .NET MVC or CakePHP. It appears to me that CakePHP might be quicker. I did look at Ruby on Rails, but the learning curve is a little steep (which is not an issue if I can be convinced that this is the best tool for the task), I'm not too crazy about the huge number of files generated and I have heard about scalability issues as well as it's applicability to complex situations. I look forward to your opinions on your favorite technology and why.

• How much C/C++ knowledge is needed for Objective-C/iPhone development?

  First, a little background. I'm a .Net developer (C#) and have over 5 years experience in both web development and desktop applications. I've been wanting to look into iPhone development for some time now, but for one reason or another always got side tracked. I finally have a potential project on the horizon, and I'm now going full steam ahead learning this stuff. My question is this: I haven't done any C/C++ programming since my schooling days, I've been living in managed land ever since. How much knowledge if any is needed to be successful as an iOS developer? Obviously memory management is something that I'll have to be conscious about (although with iOS 5 there seems to be something called ARC which should make my life easier), but what else? I'm not just talking about the C API (for example, in order to get the sin of a number, I call the sin() function), that's what Google is for. I'm talking about fundamental C/C++ idioms that the average C# developer is unaware of.

• Raspberry Pi + Azure + Mobile App

  Ongoing project idea. So this is of long running personal interest to build a Mobile App that shows you a push notification/pop up alert, when anyone calls your house phone. So I've taken delivery of a Raspberry Pi. I've ordered a new Crucible Technology Caller ID Box. (arriving soon). I have been writing/learning Python to implement the Listener software. This will in turn push xml messages up to Azure for final delivery via push notifications to an App. iOS app already written to receive the notifications/allow address book additions made up from phone numbers from incoming calls. So this is fusion, R-Pi, Azure, Hardware and iOS. Details to follow as this plan unfolds.

• How do you know when to change jobs? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: When do you know it's time to move on from your current job? I have been working for a couple years now. I just want to know what people think about leaving one company for another, or to start looking around for other positions. I tend to use people's resumes as a guideline for when to change from one company to another. I am approaching, the time in my life where most of those people I look too, move away from their first position to pursue others. I know that isn't something good to base my decisions on what other do. I was wondering when is it time to move companies. I am currently happy at my position, and I am learning tons. • WCF: connecting to service over internet times out

  Still on the WCF learning curve: I've set up a self-hosted WCF Service (WSDualHttpBinding), which works fine on my own computer, which resides behind a firewall. If I run the client on my own computer, everything works great. Now I installed the client on a computer outside my network, and I'm trying to access the service via a dynamic DNS, like so: http://mydomain.dyndns.org:8000/MyService. My port forwarding issues were taken care of in a previous question; I can now see the service is up in my browser. But now when I try to run the client on the other machine, I get the following error message: "The open operation did not complete within the allotted timeout of 00:01:00. The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout." I have disabled security on the service, so that's not it. What else might be preventing the connection from happening?

  I'm very new to programming. I started learning PHP about half a year ago, so I do know something. I can write small functions, I can export and import information from a database and I can make a website. I don't know OOP principles and I don't know about objects and classes. Should I move to OOP principles and learn about classes, methods and objects? If not, what should I do? Continue writing simple code? How can a programmer write his/her own API? Is OOP necessary to do this? So how can i improve my skills? I love programming. I spend my 24/7 on it, so any help will be appreciated.

  One of my goals for next year is to participate in the Australian Informatics Olympiad. As far as I'm aware, it is not too different from Informatics Olympiads in other countries. What would be the best way to study for this? What content should I pay particular attention to while learning in Python? I am currently using the book 'Learn Python the hard way', but are there any other books worthy of a mention? • Is there much difference between X86 Assembly language on Windows and Linux?

  I'm a complete beginner at Assembly, and my aim is to learn as much as I can to do with Assembly to one day I can reach expert level (I know I'm way off right now, but you never know). My only problem is this: I've got two books which both teach assembly, one on a Linux and the other on Windows. They are Jeff Duntemann's Assembly Language Step By Step (the linux one) and Introduction to 80x86 Assembly Language and Computer Architecture (the windows version). If I want to get the best out of assembly, should I do this on linux and windows? Also, is the syntax the same on Windows and Linux or will I have teach my self again when learning on the other OS( which is my main concern, I want to be able to use assembly on windows and linux).

• Integrating Java webapps with Adobe Professional: Resources?

  I'm interested in learning what resources there are for integrating Java and Adobe Professional, in general. If it helps, my projects already use the Spring Framework. My boss is particularly interested in being able to fill out a PDF form from within a Java webapp and have that data go directly to our database. She mentioned that .net had a lot of bridges to Adobe Professional. I would rather new projects be in Java so I am eager to find if there are any easy bridges between Java and Adobe Professional.   What Language is Unity written in? Also, where can i get its source code? I have an idea for a windowing enviroment or shell (dont know what to call it). What i want to do is teach myself to create it. i like some of several ideas i have seen, but i want to redo all of them, also the concept of how a desktop works. • Expressions that are idiomatic in one language but not used or impossible in another

  I often find myself working in unfamiliar languages. I like to read code written by others and then jump in and write something myself before going back and learning the corners of each language. To speed up this process, it really helps to know a few of the idioms you'll encounter ahead of time. Some of these, I've found are fairly unique. In Python you might do something like this: '\n'.join(listOfThings) Not all languages allow you to call methods on string literals like this. In C, you can write a loop like this: int i = 50; while(i--) { /* do something 50 times */ } C lets you decrement in the loop condition expression. Most more modern languages disallow this. Do you have any other good examples? I'm interested in often used constructions not odd corner cases.

  Hello guys, I just got myself an android phone and I'm dying to start coding on it ! However I'm not a big java fan, although I can live with that, I would like to know if there're reasonable alternatives for the android virtual machine. I've done a medium sized project using clojure, however from the reviews I read, it's very slow when running on android. How about scala ? • Trouble installing downloaded program

  I purchased and downloaded Celtx and I'm having trouble installing it (in Ubuntu 13.04). I'm a Linux newbie (literally had it for four days) so please be kind and don't assume much experience with the command line, I'm still learning. The folder with all related files/packages etc. is under "Downloads" and I have tried several commands to try and install but I'm just not doing it right and would appreciate help with exactly what command(s) to use. Sudo apt-get install celtx did not work. I'm assuming I'm missing a step somewhere.

• How hard is it for a .NET programmer to learn Objective C and Cocoa?

  Hi, I'm trying to build a dual platform application for a company of my own I'm trying to start at night. I have the .NET version done, but have not finished the UI part. I'm thinking of buying some 3rd party controls. If I buy these controls, however, they clearly will only work in my Windows version. I'm wondering if I should try to do the UI in GTK# and use Mono with CocoaSharp or just build the thing in MS technology and teach myself the Mac side? I'm just really unfamiliar with the Mac world and am wondering how much of a learning curve there might be. I've thought perhaps of rewriting my core logic in Ruby or Python. This why I could use the .NET version with .NET controls and presumably hook the same code up on the Mac. It's an educational app targeted at consumers. As such, it shouldn't require a lot of technical sophistication to install.

• Breaking in to Programming

  I've noticed that there is a gap between getting formal education in computer science as a student and entry-level/junior programming jobs. Obviously entry-level programming requires that you know some programming but how much do you need to break in? • To use Dart, the Java programmer has to work with 2 languages? [closed]

  When deciding on a technology to use for web apps, it's become a difficult choice between GWT and Dart and I am looking for guidance in deciding. GWT is a java programmer's dream because they don't have to learn a new language or have to worry about a separate IDE or extra plugin etc. GWT was sold using this value proposition - one didn't need to program in Javascript. But are Google making a U-turn and saying "go through the hassle of learning a new language" afterall? Or is it intended for there to be a Java to Dart compiler so that Java developers do not have to learn a new language? (this is not a rant, so I don't know why you are down-voting the question) Note: "the syntax is very similar" is not a justification. You could say why bother with GWT and just work with Java + Javascript directly.
