• Is there a screen sharing/remote desktop app for mac that lets you use a different host screen resolution?

  Ok, there are tons and tons of questions about remote desktop for mac and they're all being closed as duplicates. I however am specifically looking for one that will let me use a different resolution than the host, the way you can with Remote Desktop for Windows. For instance, when I connect to my 11" Macbook Air booted into Windows7 from my quad-screen desktop, also booted into Win7 using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client, it blanks out the screen on the notebook, then virtualizes the video across all four of my desktop's monitors at their native resolutions (2560x1600, 2 x 1920x1200 and 1600x1200) and the notebook now acts as if it has four physical monitors connected to it. All of this from a notebook that only has a 1366 x 768 native resolution. Even when running OS X on the client running RDC, while it doesn't support multi-monitors like its Win counterpart, it still lets me run at the native resolution of the client screen of 2560x1600. Again, it just blanks out the host screen while doing so. However when using Mac's screen sharing, since that is just glorified VNC, it just mirrors what's already on the host's screen, meaning it will always be a single screen with the resolution of 1366x768. This of course makes sense since VNC is a mirroring solution, not a video-virtualizing one like RDC, but it means that on my quad-monitor setup, the remote window isn't even large enough to fill up a single monitor, let alone four (unless you have a client that can scale it up, but that's video scaling. It's still only 1366x768.) So what I'm looking for is if there is a solution on the Mac that lets me do the same thing as RDC in a Win environment. Don't care if I have to pay. I'd gladly pay several hundred dollars for this. I just need that specific feature. Note: People have suggested various VNC clients, but the VNC host still runs at 1366x768 so that will not work here. Ever. Also, people have suggested Synergy/Synergy+/Teleport and such which share the keyboard and mouse, not video. Completely different animal unrelated to what I'm looking for.

• Generalized strategy for file server virtualization in Xenserver

  I'm not shopping as much as I'm looking for some guidance on good idea / bad idea strategies. I'm sure I'm not in the "best practices" budget range. Currently, I have 3 dell poweredges running xenserver in a pool. Each node has a ubuntu file server, serving about 6TB. One is the primary, the other two are rsync targets for backup. The 6TB is stored on their respective local storage disks as an LVM of 3x2tb virtual disks. The fileserver VM disks are also stored on the node local disks. Each node also runs a smattering of light-weight VMs for web, development, windows VMs, and stuff like that. Several of those VM's disks reside on a QNAP NAS to play with live migration. These VM's are often clients of the primary file server (like all the mail, web content, user files are stored on the file server, not on the mail, web, and samba VMs). This all works fine, and is a major step up for us. The downside is that the QNAP is a single point of failure. And the only thing the QNAP is doing is serving migratable VM images, not client data. Someday the poweredge local arrays will be full, and we will have to reinvent ourselves again. Is it wise to have heavywieght vms (like the fileserver, with its 6+ TB disks) on a SAN or NAS? Would it be better to keep the VMs lightweight, have the VM images on a SAN or NAS, and use 2 or more NAS act as NFS-serving file appliances? A hybrid SAN/NAS that can serve iscsi for images and NFS for the client vms? It seems like live-magration would be a misnomer if you have to migrate a fileserver with its entire 6+ TB disk. I recognize there are plenty of ways to skin the cat. We've already skinned it a few ways. What makes sense?

• USB-to-Serial showing gibberish at 115200 Baud

  I've got a serious problem which drives me crazy because I tried everything I could think of. When using a USB-to-Serial interface everything works as long as I don't go beyond 57600 Baud. I tried differtent OSes (Ubuntu, WinXP, Win7, OSX 10.7) with 32 and 64 Bit. I tried USB-to-Serial interface from FTDI and Prolific. I tried reading the output from my Raspberry PI and from an Asterisk Appliance. I changed the cables and the wiring. Nothing helped. In the video I made a example with a old Notebook with native COM and put the USB-to-Serial to the same connection as "sniffer" (only Rx and GND connected) to make sure the output and everything is ok as one can see on the native port. The voltage is ok. Settings for both are 115200 Baud, 8 Bit with 1 Stop and no flow control. Native is ok. USB is messed up. I used the newest drivers and double checked all connections. I have no idea what is wrong here. As I couldn't find anyone describing problems like this I question my long experiance in computer science and think I'm doing some completly wrong... Please help :-/

• With puppet, can you have the client ask to be a certain set of roles?

  I've recently got my puppetmaster and client up and running and have had the client correctly signed, then requested and applied simple changes, all good. I have a growing number of machines (100). They are not consistently named (historical reasons). They fall into a handful of categories (think of it like: dataserver_type1, dataserver_type2, webserver_type1, webserver_type2....). New instances of these types of machines are added weekly. I don't understand (yet) or cannot see how I can declare a "generic" node of (say) "dataserver_type1" that contains whatever modules it needs, and set something in the client puppet.conf that says "I am a dataserver_type1" without using the hostname/FQDN If I set the node name in the catalog as (say) "my-data-server-type1" - the certified hostname - it picks it up and works. I know you can use patterns for hostnames but as I said, my server names are not consistent, and I can't change them. This seems disingenuous to have to edit a file and manually add a node for each server, when they continue to grow. Edit: Digging deeper, it seems roles may be what I want. But there still seems to be an element whereby the master has contain a list of roles that a specific named server should do. Perhaps what I am asking is, how can a client say "I want to be this role", without the server having to be updated?

• How do people type different languages into computer?

  Hello, We have English keyboards. I never saw any other keyboard in my life. I've been wondering for a long time. How do people in Korea, China, Russia, Muslim countries and some European countries where English is less known. Do they have keyboards in their native language? I mean are the keyboard directly manufactured in their native language. Or do they use some kind of keyboard mapping softwares to acheive the task. I've been searching in Google images to have a glance at their computers but didn't find any real key pads for computers/smartphones. If they have some non-English keyboard. Then how would they type web URLs? URLs possible in other languages also? If they have to type English URLs then it also means that they need to know English. I've seen in some movies that they have all their softwares, windows have text in their native language. How do they have some different language? I feel lost & confused. If you have any screenshots / pics of such non-english computer please post. I want to see one.

• Experience with asymmetrical (non-identical hardware) SQL Server 2005 / Win 2003 cluster

  I am reasonably good at dealing with SQL Server clusters; I am wondering if folks have experience, good or bad, using a mix of different models of servers from the same vendor in one SQL 2005 cluster. Suppose: I have one more powerful, more RAM, more shizzle box and one less powerful, less memory, less shizzle box bound together in a 2-node cluster. These would be HP DL380 and 580 machines (not that it should matter) I understand AND automate the process of managing memory for each SQL instance, so there's no memory contention when SQL instances fail over. Basically I am thinking a CLR proc will monitor the instances and self-regulate memory caps on each instance, so that they won't page or step on one another. I get the fact the instances might be slower and or under memory pressure if they share a "lesser" node, and that's OK. The business can deal with a slower instance in a server-problem scenario. Reasonable? Any "gotchas" to watch out for? More info 10/28: doing some experiments with a test cluster I find that reconfiguring max/min memory is OK PROVIDED the instance isn't already under memory pressure. If I torture the system with a huge query that demands a big chunk of RAM, and simultaneously adjust the memory allocation to a smaller value than what is being actively used, it's possible to run the instance out of memory and have it halt and restart itself (unhappy situation). Many ugly out-of-memory messages in the error log, crashing, burning... It's an extreme case, but good to know. Seems, then, that it would only be really safe to set this on startup of the instance, as in have a startup script that says "I am on node1, so my RAM settings are X or I am on node two, so they are Y," like this: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/aaron_bertrand... • Setting up a global MySQL Cluster in the cloud

  I'm giving the question an overhaul to more specifically identify where I need help. I use two tools to manage a bunch of cloud server: Puppet and Rundeck. Both of these can be configured to use a mysql backend. I'd like to setup an instance of each application in both the U.S., and the U.K., treating the U.K. servers as hot stand-bys in case of failure in the U.S. I want to use a MySql cluster so that the data is automatically replicated from the U.S. to the U.K. Because these are hot standbys, high performance is not a goal. Redundancy and data integrity are most important. My question revolves around the setup of the mysql cluster. I want to run three servers, each one running a data node, a sql node, and a management node. Is this a valid configuration for mysql server? If so, could someone point me in the right direction for creating such a setup? I've downloaded the offical tarball, and the official debian, and the documentation for them contradicts many of the online tutorials. I'm installing on Ubuntu 10.04.

• Performance of external USB disk with ESXi5

  I have a new HP DL120 G7 server with ESXi5. One VM is a Win2003 instalation and I have an external USB2.0 drive attached by USB Controller and USB Device. I copy a 4GB file from external USB to server disk. In the VM that takes up to 10 minutes. On a native Win2003 that takes aprox. 3 minutes. I have no explaination for that diference: In any case the bottleneck is the USB connection, much slower than the disks (SAS, RAID1). If the USB connection on the VM would be USB1.1 and not USB2.0 it would take much more time. (The disk performance between server partitions on the VM is correct. - see update) Could be that my native box is extremely fast and the VM is the normal case. ??? Update I try with passtrough and a first run copy the same data in aprox. 7 minutes. Still 2 times slower than the native connection. I also did another messure and the copy between partitions on the same VM takes 3 minutes.

Has there been a slump in web development that uses databases like Mysql, or Data Warehousing here recently? Or have alternate solutions like NoSQL/CouchDB/MongoDB started to take over or what? or have I just been missing something?

• Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card?   So the wonderful low down on this doozie of a problem: short version: We are building a distribution system for this item of software we're using. Basically we take out build artifact, store it on an ftp server which passes it to multiple clients which execute scripts to patch their servers. Long version: 1 distribution server multiple client servers software: jython 2.5.1, ant 1.8.0, pyro 3.10 The distribution server has an FTP server and a PYRO client running on it. Each client server has a PRYO server running on it. When the PYRO client is told to start the patch procedure then it reads a machine list which contains a list of all the client servers. Then connects to each of the PYRO servers one by one and execute the patch procedure. The procedure is: getPatch (gets the latest patch for that server), StopServer (stops the software that may or maynot be accessing what needs to be patched), Apply patch, StartServer. Each of the processes calls an ANT script that passes with some folder names and other config passes around. The fun part happens when you go to apply the patch. See below for error log. I had to remove the folder names because of NDA reasons. This is where it gets interesting. Running each section of the procedure individually. i.e. running getPatch, StopServer, etc. one at a time manually. This bug doesn't happen. Physically goign to the machine and running the processes it doesn't happen. Only when we call all 4 of the processes one after the other. It occurs during the ApplyPatch phase when an ANT replace script is called on multiple files. We think it might have something to do with the JVM keeping hold of the file for a split second or 2. however this is meant to have been patched according to the bug notes on ant. so in short: • Winforms TabControl causing spurious Paint events for UserControl

  For our project, we've written a WinForms UserControl for graphing. We're seeing some strange behavior when our control is sited in a TabControl - our control continuously fires Paint events, even when there is absolutely no activity by the user. We only see this in the TabControl. When we site our control in other containers such as Forms or Splitters, Paint is only fired when you'd expect e.g. when the control is first displayed, etc. Can anyone suggest why this might be happening?   I've been trying for 3 hours and I just can't understand what is happening here. I have an enum 'Maze'. For some reason, when the method 'search' is called on this enum it's EXTREMELY slow (3 minutes to run). However, if I copy the same method to another class as a static method, and I call it from the enum 'Maze' it runs in one second!   I plan to use dom4j DOM Document as a static cache in an application where multiples threads can query the document. Taking into the account that the document itself will never change, is it safe to query it from multiple threads?   Hi. While I do my best to clean JNI objects to free native memory in the end of the usage, there are still some that hang around for a long time, wasting system native memory. Is there any way to force the GC to give priority in collection of these JNI proxies? I mean is there a way to cause GC to concentrate on a particular kind of object, namely the JNI proxies? Thanks.
