• Slow Network Performance with Windows Server 2008 SP1

  I recently installed Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2008. Since that time, network performance has been awful. Both Windows 7 and Mac Snow Leopard clients have seen miserable speeds when trying to read or write to the server. This is the exact update: Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 x64 Edition (KB976932) It's a very simple file server setup. No Domain or Active Directory. Essentially just shared folders. It's Windows Web Server that I'm running. Are there any settings I can tweak? Should I roll back the update (doesn't seem wise)? Update: I've turned off the Power Management for the Network Adapter. That may help. If it doesn't have to be powered on at the start of a request, it should speed things up. Or so I would assume.

• Centos and dell PowerEdge Rxxx Series.

  hi we lately purchase few dell servers all of them from Rxxx series couple of R410 and R710 the OS we used on those servers is: CentOS 5.4 we're getting very weird error messages and we lost network connectivity couple of times (restarting the network interface was needed to fix it) the messages we're getting are: Message from syslogd@ at Wed Nov 18 12:07:08 2009 ... servername kernel: Uhhuh. • Reading PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5 files in an XP or Windows 98 environment

  Hello all, My priest has 3 computers, Windows 3.1, Windows 98 and Windows XP. Recently his power supply blew out on his Windows 3.1 computer and he needs to get to the data on the hard drive. He's looking into imaging the hard drive and setting it up as a VM, which might be a bit much for him. Ignoring getting the data off the hard drive as a separate problem, are there any programs out there that can read files from PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5. He already has Microsoft Office so solutions involving that are preferable. If he can install the software on his Windows XP or 98 computer, that would be helpful too. Thank you for your help

  For a few weeks now, smartd has been reporting that it is skipping some of its scheduled self-tests on the weekends: Apr 24 18:29:32 calvin smartd[4758]: Device: /dev/sda, skip scheduled Offline Immediate Test; 40% remaining of current Self-Test. • My Unicomp Model M is double-striking on a key. What to do?

  I realize this isn't strictly a computer-related question, but I figured that if there's any place to go for help about a broken keyboard, it would be a power users' forum. The O key on my Unicomp Model M has the tendency to strike twice. In other words, I press the key once, and it sends out two letters. There is probably a mechanical solution to this, but I'm not familiar enough with how these things work to come up with a fix myself. Has anyone had this problem?

• Raid HDD Boot up

  My server is Power Edge 1950 running server 2008 32Bit, using 3 Physical SAS HDD as a Virtual 2 Disk configured for RAID5, with partition of C drive as OS and D drive as Data. Planning to format and install Server 2008 R2 64Bit so I insert a New Physical disk and configured as RAID5 and clone the C drive and D drive to the new hard disk. Now I need to test that the new hard disk is able to boot windows and work as expected. How do I test, I am not able to boot the windows by choosing the new harddisk, the bios show only the existing HDD, not the new one. Also, if I remove the old three hard disk, and leave the new harddisk and then am I able to boot the device, if I do this does my existing RAID5 configuration and data on the hard disk still remain.

• Windows 7 - Runs in safe mode, crashes in "normal" mode

  A couple of days ago I came back from a meeting to find my laptop had locked up. Power lights still on but the screen was blank (by which I mean black, though still "backlit" so not dead). Didn't respond to anything. I rebooted and it powered up fine and I got to the login screen. I logged in and it seemed to be going fine for about 30 seconds (gmail notifier and pidgin popped up) then the same thing happened - black screen. If I boot into Safe Mode it's all fine, no problems. I've tried removing everything from the startup folders (All users and my login), everything from the Run section of the registry (Local Machine and my login) and I've disabled every service which doesn't run in Safe Mode (assuming anything running in safe mode is OK) but the problem still exists. I've scanned the memory for errors (all fine). Any thoughts on what else I could try?

• Virtual Box fails my OSes :(

  I have a little problem with Virtual Box latest version in which i have installed Mint (also latest version).During creation of a new vdi partition I chose settings as default, that is, I don't create any tiny partitions myself. The installation works. But later while the new OS is running (not in Live mode) I try installing/updating new software available, the system automatically fails, it reports an error of DISKFULL, I close the message box then power off my system. Later on I can't boot it up again anymore. It hangs with a black screen and the PAUSE status. I have no idea why. I have installed 2 OSes and both fail at the same error. I doubt something is not right about the current version of VBox. Thank you . My host OS is Windows7 and my Clients are Mint and CentOS

When I restarted it no network interfaces were available and configured. I tried restarting networking daemon but it just exited with 0 status. So I tried to run one of the interfaces manually, but ifup and ifdown commands simply are not there. No only in PATH, but they disappeared from /sbin. So my question is: how can I recover these network utilities?

• How should I remotely manage Dell Poweredge 2850 running Ubuntu server?

  First I've got to say I'm a Linux / Ubuntu novice, so go gentle on me as I'm on day 3. I've managed to get Ubuntu server Ubuntu 8.04 LTS installed and running on the Poweredge 1850 I bought off ebay. The box will go in a rack at my office but I want to be able to work on it and power on and off from home and I gather that (maybe) IPMI over LAN might be the way to do this, or maybe its something to do with BMC or something? I want to be able to administer/manage from a client PC at home running XP. I will be configuring the office router to port forward port 80 and 443 to the Ubuntu server running Apache2, and I'm puzzled about how the remote management works (unless it comes on a different port forwarded to a different internal IP) Thanks for any help

• Program complains not enough disk space even if the disk space exists

  I have an EXT3 partition mounted in ordered data mode. If a power failure occurs when a program is creating files on that partition, I see that space usage reported is normal and I don't see any partial written files. But when I try to run the same program again after the system comes back up it complains that there is not enough disk space. Even though the free space reported is far more than required. The program always succeeds in normal conditions. Also the problem seems to disappear when the partition is remounted. I was wondering what could be the right way to handle the situation other than unmounting and remounting.

• Dedicated GPU in Dell PowerEdge C1100

  We recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge C1100 off lease with the initention of using it for graphics processing. We installed an AMD HD 7000 series GPU in it that runs off of board power and it sends video to the display. That said, the video is very choppy, leading us to belive that the onboard video is doing all the processing and sending it to the card. Is there any way to either disable the VGA on this server or tell the OS to only use the dedicated card. More info: The server is running REHL 6.4 The graphics running the proprietary AMD drivers The video card only works in OS and does not show the BIOS on boot (we know that it's impossible to change this) Any ideas, guys? Update We are now thinking that the GPU is doing the graphics processing, but not working at the full speed of the PCI bus. Which is odd, because it is an x16 slot, but probably optimized to use a RAID card (if that makes any sense). Is there any way to remedy the choppy graphics on this server?

• Lock screen keeps making sound when screen is off

  I have my laptop (Asus UL20FT) on external power and hooked up to an external monitor. I keep the laptop lid closed and am using the 'second screen only' option. If you leave it on the lock screen for a short period of time the screen powers off. While the screen is off it keeps repeating a "duuuh duh duh" sound (sounds just like the device plugged in sound). The monitor is connected via HDMI and I have Microsoft and Logitech wireless USB dongles plugged in. How can I prevent this sound loop?

• HP dv9000 Vista laptop won't boot from CD/DVD drive

  My HP dv9000 Vista laptop recently got the BSOD with error 0x0000c1f5. The only way to fix this error is to be able to boot from CD/DVD and use some repair software I have. The problem is that the laptop REFUSES to boot from any CD/DVD I try. I've changed the boot order so the CD/DVD is first, and I can hear the drive spin up a bit upon power-up, but after a second, it spins down and then the laptop tries to boot from hard drive. Any ideas? (I've tried lots of CDs so it's not the media itself) Thanks much!

• Cannot see http (apache) server outside home network

  Ive been racking my brain with this all evening. Power went out with a tstorm today, started back up my server... running apache and a team speak server on it. TS is great, cant see my web page outside my network! Firewall is disabled on the pc running it (centos btw), apache is running and working. correct ports are forwarded on my router (my isp blocks port 80). Ive tried changing ports, pretty much everything i can think of. httpd.conf is pointing to the correct addy and port, and my domain is pointing to the correct external ip. Im at a loss, any ideas out there?

  I've got basic disk OS managed disk mirroring setup in Windows 7 for a couple of volumes. After a power failure the mirrors are currently resynching. These are only small volumes of data but the sync has not completed after more than 24 hours. Is there any way to stop this as it's driving me nuts? I need to get the machine back to a usable state to get some work done but it's a bit of a dog whilst this synch is going on. I've tried removing the mirrors but it won't let me do that whilst the re-sync is in progress.

  I am looking to retire my HTPC. So much of what we do with it can be done with one of our video game consoles or an AppleTV that is seems like a waste of space, power and time to maintain. The trouble is that my wife does streaming yoga classes served up via specific websites. I am assuming they are Flash based and so far I have been unable to find Apps for these content providers. My question is, is there a GOOD way to handle flash-based or even HTML5/h.264 web content with one of the other Internet enabled devices in our stack? • How do you change your Airport or Ethernet MAC address in Mac OS X 10.6?

  I have a MacBook Pro and would like to set a custom MAC address for either my Airport WiFi card, or Ethernet port. In older versions of Mac OS X, you could do it like this: $ sudo ifconfig en0 ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 // Ethernet $ sudo ifconfig en1 lladdr AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF // Airport For it to work on Airport, you'd have to power it on (e.g. $ sudo ifconfig en1 up), ensure it's not connected to any wireless network, and execute the command. I'm aware such a change won't propagate across reboots. Unfortunately, this doesn't work on Mac OS X 10.6.6 anymore. Apple appears to have removed the functionality (the command fails silently). • Verizon HTC Eris - No sound on incoming phone call after 2.1 droid upgrade. Help!?

  Has anyone had the following issue? I've had several issues as well: No sound when call connects, ringing or people talking. Apps would force close like weather. I did call HTC support and they had me go into Menu, Settings, Manage Applications and then clear the cache of the problem app. They also had me clear the cache once the browser was open and then do a soft reset (power off the phone and take the battery out for 15 seconds) This did fix some issues, but I am constantly turning my phone on and off to get sound back on call or to make the assigned ringtones work. There's no rhyme or reason as to why they stop working... Anyone else tried anything different??? • HP ProLiant Smart Array "lock up" code 0x11

  I've a ProLiant DL580 G7 server that experienced a storage subsystem failure during production. The system appeared available and responded to pings, but all I/O access stalled (the system load must have been 100+). The ASR did not trigger at the specified watchdog timeout. I had to force a reboot from the ILO. During POST, I received the following error: A controller failure event occurred prior to this power-up. (Previous lock up code = 0x11) I haven't pulled the ADU report yet, but I'm curious as to what this error actually means. I was not responsible for the the installation, but can see that the firmware is very old. But if there's anything else I should know about the error, I'd like to know for the post-mortem report. edit - I should add that the server had 95 days of uptime prior to the lock up.

• Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong?
