• Can't set permissions for files on an NTFS partition

  I remember that I was able to run a Linux .exe that was placed on an NTFS partition earlier before I installed 10.10 RC. But if I try to run it now, I can't run it as it hasn't the execution permission. The bad part is that I can't change the permissions too. I'm chmod-ding +x but no change at all with its permissions. So this seems to be a bug? Any help? Though when I put it on ext4 partition, I can set the permission. But I want to do this as I did before, right from its default NTFS location.

• HybridGraphics vga_switcheroo switch to intel at boot

  How can I do that? I have followed this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics but it didn't work I'm getting the error at boot that the /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch don't exist , so the problem seems to be that the /sys/kernel/debug don't exist when the grub parameters are processed and it is created after the grub parameter processing. So far I have made an alternative method, which works. In rc.local I granted full access to my user to /sys/kernel/debug then also to /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch and then I have made a simple script to switch the graphics to intel and putted it in ~./confif/autostart. The script is executed every time I log in to gnome. It's working however it would be nice if it worked at boot, as is described at that help.ubuntu.com page. Any ideas? Thanks

• PowerShell - grabbing values out of the registry and running them

  So I closed an application that runs when Windows starts up, but it doesn’t have a Start Menu entry, and I was trying to find it. Ok, I could’ve run regedit.exe, navigated through the tree and found the list of things that run when Windows starts up, but I thought I’d use PowerShell instead. PowerShell presents the registry as if it’s a volume on a disk, and you can navigate around it using commands like cd and dir. It wasn’t hard to find the folder I knew I was after – tab completion (starting the word and then hitting the Tab key) was a friend here. But unfortunately dir doesn’t list values, only subkeys (which look like folders). PS C:\Windows\system32> dir HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run PS C:\Windows\system32> Instead, I needed to use Get-Item to fetch the ‘Run’ key, and use its Property property. This listed the values in there for me, as an array of strings (I could work this out using Get-Member). PS C:\Windows\system32> (Get-Item HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run).Property QuickSet SynTPEnh Zune Launcher PS C:\Windows\system32> Ok, so the thing I wanted wasn’t in there (an app called PureText, whicih lets me Paste As Text using Windows+V). That’s ok – a simple change to use HKCU instead of HKLM (Current User instead of Local Machine), and I found it. Now to fetch the details of the application itself, using the RegistryKey method GetValue PS C:\Windows\system32> (Get-Item HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run).GetValue('PureText') "C:\Users\Rob\Utilities\PureText.exe" PS C:\Windows\system32> And finally, surrounding it in a bit of code to execute that command. That needs an ampersand and the Invoke-Expression cmdlet. PS C:\Windows\system32> '& ' + (Get-Item HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run).GetValue('PureText') | Invoke-Expression A simple bit of exploring PowerShell which will makes for a much easier way of finding and running those apps which start with Windows.

• MOSS 2007 WSP Retraction 'Error"

  This one is a quick post , but I thought I would post this information as I could not find anything that helped me on this specific scenario. Please read the entire article before taking action as there are some irreversable or very troublesome routes I caution about! Problem: I had a client trying to retract a WSP from Central Admin and would eventually go to an, 'Error' State. I could not retract it and after looking at event logs I figured it was a problem with security. I tried several accounts, checked the databases to see if there was some issue with readonly databases and nothing was working.   Solution: Delete the solution from central admin! Yes, I said it. With StsAdm , just delete the solution from Central Admin using this command: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\STSADM.exe" -o deletesolution -name "yoursolution.wsp" What has just happened is that Central Admin does not know about the WSP anymore but the feature and any deployed files are still on the server. For whatever reason SharePoint was not able to retract the files as it normally does. Now you can do one of two things, you can add the solution again to central admin and deploy overtop of the deployed files so it overrides them, or simply clean up the files manually. I re-added the solution through stsadm, but then deployed through stsadm using the -force option in the command. This overrides the existing files on the server. If you deploy through Central admin it will tell you you need the -force option that is not offered as part of the UI in central admin. Use the following command: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\STSADM.exe" -o deploysolution -name "YourSolution.wsp" -immediate -allowgacdeployment -force Just to make sure everything was good, I retracted to solution again, and it worked! then I deleted the solution from central admin alltogether. Then I checked the server and noticed all the files that were deployed with the WSP were cleaned up properly. I then re-added the new WSP the client was looking to install (an Updated WSP). Conclusion: I have no idea why it was not able to retract, but I have seen this several times. I don't know if has to do with security of certain accounts. Althought it's anoying at times, it is fairly easy to fix if you have good instructions. Hope it helps you out!   ***WORD OF CAUTION - if you clean up the files manually you might want to uninstall the features through STSADM commands as SharePOint might still recognize the features that were deployed as the WSP. You might not want to get into the mess of deleting files that are still part of activated or installed Features. THis is why I suggest doing what I did.

• How to prevent Ubuntu from changing screen brightness?

  I have recently installed 12.04 on ASUS-K53SV-V300. I can change the brightness on start-up with: echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness >> /etc/rc.local or manually by Fn key. But, whenever Ubuntu dim my screen brightness to save power or wake-up from suspend or inactive for 20-30 seconds, brightness reset to high (my problem get much more when on battery). How can I disable screen brightness service to prevent it from changing my brightness? What service work on screen brightness? If I disable this service, can I manually set brightness by command? I found a program to work on brightness instead of default power manager.

• Why UFW has to be (re)started at boot time if it's only iptables rule manager?

  README from source package says: When installing ufw from source, you will also need to integrate it into your boot process for the firewall to start when you restart your system. Depending on your needs, this can be as simple as adding the following to a startup script (eg rc.local for systems that use it): # /lib/ufw/ufw-init start For systems that use SysV initscripts, an example script is provided in doc/initscript.example. See doc/upstart.example for an Upstart example. Consult your distribution's documentation for the proper way to modify your boot process. On my system I have this: # /etc/ufw/ufw.conf # # Set to yes to start on boot. If setting this remotely, be sure to add a rule # to allow your remote connection before starting ufw. Eg: 'ufw allow 22/tcp' ENABLED=yes So, why does simple iptables rule manager need to be started at boot time? Is there any secret to that, or it merely checks if all rules are in place ?

• stud ubuntu howto?

  I've just been looking at the stud init script as I thought perhaps I'm meant to create a stud.conf inside /etc/stud However, in looking through the init script it would apppear that it loads stud.conf variables into the current environment. This of course fails for some reason and you get a bunch of errors. Worse still, stud source code doesn't work with environment variables. Can someone tell me how you're actually meant to set up stud with init script as it would appear to be completely broken. Maybe I can just disable the init script and call stud from rc.local?

• LXDE keybind "Raise" window not working

  I am using LXDE* over Ubuntu Oneiric on a DELL Studio-XPS 64-bit machine and I can't get the keybind for raising windows to work. • EntSSO stopped working

  My EntSSO (Enterprise Single Sign-On Server, part of BizTalk) did not start today, with the message: The SSO service failed to start. Error Code: 0x80131700 Could not create SSOSQL. To fix the problem, reinstall SSO or try 'regasm SSOSQL.dll' from a Visual Studio command prompt. Error Code: 0x80131700   The only reason for this that I can think of is that I have just installed the .net framework 4.0 RC but I have not verified this. The solution suggest in the error message works like a charm! Open a Visual Studio command prompt and run this command: regasm  ‘C:\Program Files\Common Files\Enterprise Single Sign-On\SSOSQL.dll’ Problem solved!

• Make the Taskbar Buttons Switch to the Last Active Window in Windows 7

  The new Windows 7 taskbar’s Aero Peek feature, with the live thumbnails of every window, is awesome… but sometimes you just want to be able to click the taskbar button and have the last open window show up instead. Here’s a quick hack to make it work better. To better understand the problem, imagine having nine windows of the same type open on your screen, but you are primarily working in just one of the windows at a time. So every time you want to switch back, you have to click the taskbar button, and then choose the one you are using from the list, which can be pretty annoying… Now if you know your Windows 7 shortcuts, you’d know that you can simply hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the taskbar button, and the last window will show up. In fact, you can keep holding down the Ctrl key and keep clicking, and Windows will cycle through the open windows. It’s a useful shortcut, but hardly something you want to do every single time. Instead, we’ll use a quick registry hack to make the normal click switch to the last open window—if you still want to see the thumbnail list, just hover your mouse over the button for half a second to see the full list. Manual Registry Hack for Last Active Window Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then head down to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced Once you’re there, create a new 32-bit DWORD value on the right hand side, give it the name LastActiveClick, and set the value to 1. Once you are done, it should look something like this: Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, or you can kill Explorer.exe through Task Manager and re-open it. Download the Registry Hack Instead Since you probably don’t feel like registry hacking, we’ve provided you an easy downloadable version. You can simply download the file, extract it, and then double-click on the LastActiveClick.reg file. Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, just like with the manual registry hack. • Quick run through of the WP7 Developer Tools January 2011

  In case you haven’t heard the latest WP7 Developers Tool update was released yesterday and contains a few goodies. First you need to go and grab the bits here. You can install them in any order, but I installed the WindowsPhoneDeveloperResources_en-US_Patch1.msp first. Then the VS10-KB2486994-x86.exe. They install silently. In other words, you would need to check Programs and Features and look in Installed Updates to see if they installed successfully. Like the screenshot below: Once you get them installed you can try out a few new features. Like Copy and Paste. Just fire up your application and put a TextBox on it and Select the Text and you will have the option highlighted in red above the text. Once you select it you will have the option to paste it. (see red rectangle below). Another feature is the Windows Phone Capability Detection Tool – This tool detects the phone capabilities used by your application. This will prevent you from submitting an app to the marketplace that says it uses x feature but really does not. How do you use it? Well navigate out to either directory: %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Tools\CapDetect %ProgramFiles (x86)%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Tools\CapDetect and run the following command: CapabilityDetection.exe Rules.xml YOURWP7XAPFILEOUTPUTDIRECTORY So, in my example you will see my app only requires the ID_CAP_MICROPHONE. Let’s see what the WmAppManifest.xml says in our WP7 Project: Whoa! That’s a lot of extra stuff we don’t need. We can delete unused capabilities safely now. Some of the other fixes are: (Copied straight from Microsoft) Fixes a text selection bug in pivot and panorama controls. In applications that have pivot or panorama controls that contain text boxes, users can unintentionally change panes when trying to copy text. To prevent this problem, open your application, recompile it, and then resubmit it to the Windows Phone Marketplace. Windows Phone Connect Tool – Allows you to connect your phone to a PC when Zune® software is not running and debug applications that use media APIs. • Powershell Active Directory Account Attribute to a variable

  Sorry for the newbie question. I am using Powershell 3 to get a list of all user accounts. I am trying to generate an output for accounts, either "Enabled" or "Disabled". I am able to get the account status code from active directory using: $rc = $Rech.PropertiesToLoad.Add("userAccountControl"); That will display the correct account status code. When I try to use an if statement on the value, I dont get any result. How do I put this value into a variable to use some logic with it? In the end, my requirements are to have the output to an CSV file that I can send to HR and have them examin it and instead of a code I would like to have it say "Enabled" or "Disabled". Thank you.
