• Where is the TFS database?

  I've been using TFS 2010 with no problems. I tried adding a user and I got the following error message. "TF30063: You are not authorized to access <serverName>\DefaultCollection. -The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized." I remoted into the server, <serverName>, and opened the TFS Console. The logs mentioned a connection string: ConnectionString: Data Source=<serverName>\SS2008;Initial Catalog=Tfs_DefaultCollection;Integrated Security=True While remoted in I open SQL Server 2008 Management Studio opening the (local) server with Windows Authentication. It shows the connection to be (local)(SQL Server 9.04.03 - <serverName>\Admin), and there is no Tfs_DefaultCollection database. Can someone tell me what is going on? Was I wrong in connecting to this instance of the database (i.e. Is the log file the wrong place to find the connection string)? Is the database so corrupted that SQL Manager Studio cannot see it anymore, although TFS could? Should I be logging into Management Studio as user SS2008? btw I don't know of any such credentials.

• Map FTP folder to folder on different FTP server

  In my team we work a lot with FTP. We upload and download files from several different servers daily. Currently every member of the team manages access credentials to each FTP server locally on their own machine. I am looking for a way to set up a central FTP server that we can connect to, and from there, navigate to folders that each represent one of the other FTP servers that we connect to daily. Something like this: In-house central FTP server: |- FolderA --> server A root folder |- FolderB --> server B root folder |- FolderC --> server C root folder A setup like this, would mean that we can manage access credentials on the central FTP server, and team members would only need to have the access credentials to the central FTP server, and from there they could navigate to the other servers through these "virtual" folders. We could potentially develop our own custom FTP server that just forward requests to the remote FTP servers, but i feel like something like this (or something similar) would already have been done. • How to: mirror a staging server from a production server

  We want to mirror our current production app server (Oracle Application Server) onto our staging server. As it stands right now, various things are out of sync, and what may work in testing/QA can easily fail in production because of settings/patch/etc inconsistencies. I was thinking what would be best is to clone the entire disk daily and push it onto the staging server... Would this be the best method...? (note: these are all windows servers)

  Direct shot to foot moment... While setting-up individual non-admin accts for MSSQLSERVER services, I temporarily set Server service login to Local System account. I remembered later that: SQL Server Configuration Manager performs additional configuration such as setting permissions in the Windows Registry so that the new account can read the SQL Server settings. I want my Local System back . (Actually just restored to its original security profile) Any advice? Thanks!

• Crossover cable in addition to normal network connection on servers?

  I have 2 servers, both with Windows 2003 R2 Each have 2 NIC ports that are 10/100/1000 They are both connected to our LAN + joined to the domain (1 NIC port free on each server) The problem is that our main router is only 10/100 on the ports that these servers are connected to. Since one server is going to host SQL 2005 and the other will be running Altiris NS7, I was hoping that I could use a crossover cable to connect the two directly, thus taking advantage of their 1gbps NIC cards. Is this possible? If so what steps do I need to take to accomplish this? What needs to be done to make sure that when the app server is communicating with the SQL server that it is using the direct link vs traversing the LAN? Thanks a lot!

  Will this increase my Virtual private Server failing rate if i :- install Microsoft Window Server 2008 Enterprise install SQL server enterprise 2008 install IIS 7.5 install ASP.Net Mvc 2 install Microsoft Exchange install Team foundation server on one mini VPS with specification of DELL Poweredge R710 shared plan DDR3 ECC RAMs 16GB and -- 1GB for this VPS using DELL PERC 6i raid controller (this thing alone about 1.5k-2k) and the SAS HDD (15K RPM) (146GB) -- 33GB to this VPS each hdd is freaking fast over 300MB read / write possible with proper tuning the motherboard is a DELL and it has twin redundant PSU (870watt 85%eff) its running on Intel Xeon 5502 (Quad Core) x2 so about 8 physical proc (fairly share) is there any ruler for this about one VPS can only install what what what service ?   I'm installing a 2008 instance on a 2003 machine which is already running 2005. I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. Much more info on this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910708 I've had problems with being able to add the windows service accounts to the groups at install time. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group?

• Can't Connect w/ SQL Management Studio After Domain Change

  Our old Small Business Server 2003 (acting as our domain controller) was on the fritz, so we replaced it with a new Windows Server 2008 box and set the server up as our new domain controller. In hindsight, it may have been a mistake, but we set up the new server as a replacement and tried to keep as much the same as possible, including the DOMAIN name. The problem was, that even though the domain name was the same, the guest computers somehow still realized it was not the exact same domain. We had to unjoin and rejoin the domain and port over everyone's documents and settings. This morning, when I attempted to connect to my local SQL Server Instance, it was saying that my login failed. When I tried to use the SQL Management Studio, it throws the error "Package 'Microsoft SQL Management Studio Package' failed to load" on startup, then exits without giving me a chance to change the login. I am using Mixed Authentication and have an administrative account as a backup. Ideas? If there is a more appropriate stack, please let me know where to put it.

• MSSQL error: consistency-based I/O error - can it be caused by an MSSQL or OS problem?

  This is what I saw in the windows error log: SQL Server detected a logical consistency-based I/O error: incorrect checksum (expected: 0x19fedd20; actual: 0x19fed5e3). It occurred during a read of page (1:1764) in database ID 6 at offset 0x00000000dc8000 in file 'D:\mssql\local_repository_pbdiffimport.mdf'. Additional messages in the SQL Server error log or system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online. I ran dbcc checkdb which told me I should restore with option REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS, so I eventually ran DBCC CHECKDB (my_db_name, REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS) WITH NO_INFOMSGS But that resulted in about 2'000 rows being lost. I restored a backup but now I'm afraid this will happen again since we already had a consistency problem in the same database about 2 weeks ago but then it happened in an index (recreated indexes solved the problem). We have investigated the discs - RAID5 looks good, no errors, and also none of the disc-check-utilities have revealed any hardware problem. Can this be caused by OS (Windows Server 2003) or by MSSQL (MSSQL Server 2005)?

• Connect to development server via switch?

  I apologize upfront if this isn't appropriate for superuser. I asked it on serverfault and was told it was too general for that site. I have a laptop with Vista and it receives it's internet connection wireless. I have an old desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition installed and it is setup as a development server with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. This works well, with the server having a static IP address. The server is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Is it possible to disconnect the cable that is currently connecting the server and the router, then connect the server and workstation to a switch, so that I am still able to connect to the server via web browser from the workstation? I am trying to eliminate the long ethernet cable connecting the server to the router in the other room. I already have a switch, that is why I asked specifically about it.   I have two DNS servers in my domain, Windows 2003 and Windows 2008, but recently both are failing to route users to www.cdw.com. I have had no other complaints with any other websites, but when trying to use cdw.com the page never loads.   Environment: Windows 2000 sp4 EDIT: Domain Controller with no trust setup with the Win2008 Server Windows XP machines Windows 2008 Server Netapp NAS Problem: We have a shared folder that resides on a NAS using a Windows 2008 AD for the authentication with the proper permissions setup. When the Windows 2000 machine tries to open the share residing on the Win2008 machine, it is prompted for a username and password. Upon entering the credentials it continuously re-asks for credentials. Important Details: The Windows 2000 machine can ping both the XP machines and the Windows 2008 Server The Windows 2008 machine is mandated to only use NTLMv2 The Windows 2000 machine was originally set to NTLM but was recently switched to NTLMv2 if negotiated for the purpose of trying to connect to the share. As I am sure it will come up, we are using Windows 2000 because of contractual obligations Questions: Why is password Authentication failing in this case? After setting a GPO for the Win2000 machine for it to use NTLMv2, do we need to reboot the machine for the changes to take affect? We used SECEDIT to update the GPOs without rebooting. UPDATE We checked both of the 2008 Domain Controllers to find an error code. We received: Microsoft_Auth_Package_V1_0 0xc000006a Event ID: 4776 I know this to be an authentication error via THIS article "The value provided as the current password is not correct" We know this password to be correct, but since these two domains (Win2000 & Win2008) do not have a trust setup what authentication account needs to be used? One that resides on the Win2000 hosted domain?

• long access times and errors in iis application

  Hi, I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log.   I'm having trouble setting up the trust relationship between a Windows Server 2003 and a Windows Server 2008 AD. Domain a is Windows Server 2003 Forest functional level. Domain b is a Windows Server 2008 Forest functional level. I can set up the incoming side of the trust relationship on domain "a" so that it trusts domain "b". Try as I might on domain "b" I can't set up the outgoing side of the trust relationship to domain "a". The GUI interface gives an unhelpful 'The request is not supported'. I'm not sure netdom is being more or less helpful as it refers me to FilterSIDs netdom trust /add b /uo:b\admin /po:* /d:a /ud:a\admin /pd:* /oneside:trusting To improve the security of this external trust, security identifier (SID) filtering is enabled, however, if users have been migrated to the trusted domain and their SID histories have been preserved, you may choose to turn off this feature. For more information about SID filtering and how to turn it off, see the help for netdom trust /FilterSids or see Help and Support. The request is not supported. The command failed to complete succesfully. I say 'less helpful' because Windows Server 2008 doesn't support the /FilterSIDs option. How can we force creation of this trust? Edit: Just to clarify I've checked that the [Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options] "Network access: Allow anonymous SID/Name translation” is enabled on both sides of the trust as per http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverDS/thread/cc61fc25-3569-4413-bbfd-92390eb31118

• Subdomain not hitting new site?

  I have an existing site at my.site.com and I would like to setup a staging subdomain (staging.my.site.com). I have my DNS setup and directing staging.my.site.com to my server, but for some reason the Web Site I created in IIS for it is not being hit. Instead when I go to staging.my.site.com it takes me to the original site. The site I created in IIS has a home directory that is totally different from the regular sites home directory. I have added one host header with the following information: IP Address: (All Unassigned) TCP port: 80 Host Header Value: staging.my.site.com I was under the impression that with the setup I described above hitting staging.my.site.com through a web browser would bring up the staging site, but it does not. Can anyone see what I am doing wrong? UPDATE: One thing I noticed is that in my A record I am mapping to the IP Address ( lets say 1.1.1.1 for this example). In the host headers for the main site (my.site.com) it has 1.1.1.1 as an entry. Is this normal? Could it cause the problem I am talking about?

• issues with Nginx + Passenger Production setup - Loading time/request time delay

  having a bit of an issue relating to request time. I have NGINX as a proxy server for a ruby on rails app running passenger. I also have a postgresql database server which is running on its own VM separate from my nginx/application server. My issue is that when I try and access my products page which does a lot of database queries, my query takes maybe 3-4 seconds. The second I flood the web server with requests, i will choke out the web server and have requests take almost 20-30 seconds to process. The rails server and database server do not crash, and the usage is not that high. Each server has more than enough memory, even cpu usage on the rails server isn't more than 85%, albeit thats high but its not maxing it out. Is my problem related to my nginx proxy server? I dont really know how to fully explain this so if you have a question please ask it and I can clarify what I mean. • C# sends SQL data 4 times less from one box than from another

  W2003, .NET 3.5, SQL 2008 I have prod and UAT app servers deployed in 2 different data centres. I have a C# app which reads text file, parse the text and sends the data to the SQL in bulk. SQL server is in US and the app servers are in London (but in different places). All POPs have dedicated network connections. There is no public internet involved. When the app runs on UAT server I can see in Perfmon that the Send byte/sec is x4 higher than from production server. My estimate is that one server outputs at 1 MB/s and the other at 250 KB/s rate. My suspicion immediately is that there is a router on one of the DCs which shapes traffic or does QoS limitation on traffice from London to US. However support and Windows team and networkig team all are saying that there are no differences in neither networking config on the 2 DCs nor NIC config on the 2 app server... How to find out why is the networking bottlneck is 4 times tighter in one place than in the other? What can I do about it?

• DHCP Relay setup in ubuntu server

  I have a network appliance (QNO) that works as traffic load balancer and dhcp server. I would like to add a linux server in between the network appliance and the client computers. The linux server will be used to monitor bandwidth usage. My problem is I still want DHCP to be served by the network appliance so that load balancing will still work efficiently. We are afraid that if we setup the linux server as the DHCP server the network appliance will not be able to load balance the traffic if it only sees the linux server as a single client connecting to it. I've been searching all over for a tutorial on how to setup DHCP relay but have not found any. How do I setup DHCP relay on my linux server given there are two NICs attached to it, one connects the linux server to the network appliance and the other connects the linux server to the client computers. EDIT Router (DHCP) ---- [eth0] Linux Server (Relay agent) [eth1] ----- PC (network) Router IP is 192.168.0.100 eth0 is on DHCP eth1 is static 192.168.2.11 (if I need to change this I can) Tried to do dhcrelay -i eth1 192.168.0.100, but the PC was not getting any DHCP lease from the DHCP router. I might be missing something here.

  I am running linux based server (centos 6.0) with cpanle and WHM, I have critical website running with a chat server which uses a openfire as the chat server backend server, i have monitored last few weeks this service crashes quite often, i have no way of knowing that, and i have to wait till the next day to restart the server. (and this can only be fixed by using server reboot as its got to do with some java memory problem) is there a way i can setup a monitoring service to the server and if this service goes down server itself will reboot ? is this something possible or is there a better way to overcome this problem ?

• Is there a way to import a scheduled task from windows 2003 (.job) to windows 2008 (.xml)?

  I had some jobs to be moved from the old production server (windows 2003 server standard) to the new machine (windows 2008 server standard), but the new server is unable to read the old .job format, also the import wizard only imports from .xml job files (same version). Obviously I don't want to rebuild all the jobs by hand, but can't find a tool that makes the process a very little easier. I don't trust in Microsoft for this kind of tools, my previously experiences had been to bad (DTS - SSIS). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
