  Two decades ago, the topic of "NULL" came up in conversation with a scholarly colleague. As I remember it, he said that C.J.Date, in an essay critical of commercial implementations of SQL, had listed over two hundred meanings for NULL. To my regret, I did not persist the details; but finding that list has since been on my Bucket List. Has anyone else heard this legend? Was it perhaps not Date, but another critic of commercial implementations of SQL?

• Forms authentication failed between web server and sql server

  I've actually found the solution, but I'm trying to understand why it failed, and why my solution fixed the problem. We have an application that uses forms authentication between a web server and sql server, web server runs server 2008, sql server runs 2008 r2, and sql server 2008. In august the sql server was patched with .net 3.5.1, the web server was untouched, and the forms authentication continued to work. 1 week ago we virtualized the web server onto our vSphere server because of failing hardware. Afterwards the form authentication failed with event code 4005, detail code 50201, The ticket supplied was invalid (on the sql server). In fact the sql server started generating Schannel errors and began blue screening 3-4 times a day. At this point I touched the sql server for the first time(ever), the errors were non specific, any reference to them I could find had to do with either zone alarm(which we don't run), or memory errors. So I applied service pack 1, which stopped the blue screening, but did not fix the forms authentication. At this point we had a work around, so we put it on the back burner while we completed another project, and I was able to get back on it last night. First thing was to adjust some code in the webconfig file on the sql server, nothing, next was regenerate and change out the machine key, still no change. Update the DNS servers, no change. Finally I went through and installed all windows updates, two reboots, (over RDP installed a network card driver which failed, and did not have my server room key, that was fun). After that, forms authentication was working again. And the sql server stopped generating as many errors, I've gotten two schannel errors since then. In short, forms authentication began failing when the web server was cloned onto a virtual machine, which caused the sql server to blue sceen? and forms authentication to fail. And could only be fixed by applying patches to the sql server?(I'm wishing I had patched the servers one at a time so I could know for sure which patch on which server fixed it). My question is why did it fail, and why did patching fix it? I hate fixing something without fully understanding the why and how.

• Which is better : Storing/retrieving images on/from SQL server or in a directory on server

  I am working on a project in Asp.net MVC and need to work with images. There is an SQL database with a Product table. Every product in the table will have it's own image. I have two ways to do this : 1) Save the image in a web directory and store the URL on database. 2) Store the image in SQL itself in binary format and then retrieve it. Which is a better approach ? Mind you, I have no idea how second method works :-P . I will only learn this if there are merits to the second method

  I am hoping that someone may have experience with this, since the discountasp site is very lacking in straightforward answers. I am building a lightweight web application and have decided to have sql ce as the database for it. Two questions regarding this: Do i need to get an actual database hosted as well as the site, in order for it to work? Do you know if discountasp supports the use of sql ce (not with webmatrix or any cms builds, completely custom)? If they don't, do you have any experience/recommendations with getting this done?

  I have trouble naming the COUNT() column from SQL queries and will swap between various variants _Count [Count] (sql, or "count" or backticks for MySQL etc) C Cnt CountSomething (where "something" is the field being counted, or "CountAll") NoOfRows RowCount etc Has anyone come up with any name that you are happy with and always use without hesitation? This is bothering me because after joining SO just recently, my answers have shown this tendency of flip-flopping with no consistency. I need to get this sorted. Please help. (While we're at it, what do you use for SUM etc?)   hi, i am making a database for an accounting/sales type system similar to a car sales database and would like to make some transactions for the following real world actions salesman creates new product shipped onto floor (itempk, car make, year, price).   salesman changes price.   salesman creates sale entry for product sold (salespk, itemforeignkey, price sold, salesman).   salesman cancels item for removed product.   salesman cancels sale for cancelled sale    the examples i have found online are too generic...like this is a transaction... i would like something resembling what i am trying to do to understand it.  anybody have some good similar or related sql examples i can look at to design these? do people use transactions for sales databases?  or if you have done this kind of sql transaction before could you make an outline for how these could be made?  thanks  my thread so far on stack overflow... http://stackoverflow.com/q/4975484/613799

  I’ve received a buch of emails from PASS Summit “First Timers” that are also somehow new to SQL Server (for “somehow” I mean people with less than 6 month experience but with some basic knowledge of SQL Server engine) or are catching up from SQL Server 2000. The common question regards the session one should not miss to have a broad view of the entire SQL Server platform have some insight into some specific areas of SQL Server Given that I’m on (semi-)vacantion and that I have more free time (not true, I have to prepare slides & demos for several conferences, PASS Summit  - Building the Agile Data Warehouse with SQL Server 2012 - and PASS 24H - Agile Data Warehousing with SQL Server 2012 - among them…but let’s pretend it to be true), I’ve decided to make a post to answer to this common questions. Of course this is my personal point of view and given the fact that the number and quality of session that will be delivered at PASS Summit is so high that is very difficoult to make a choice, fell free to jump into the discussion and leave your feedback or – even better – answer with another post. I’m sure it will be very helpful to all the SQL Server beginners out there. I’ve imposed to myself to choose 6 session at maximum for each Track. Why 6? • Alternative to TOP in SQL Server and Oracle.

• Row Versioning Concurrency in SQL Server

  The optimistic concurrency model assumes that several concurrent transactions can usually complete without interfering with each other, and therefore do not require draconian locking on the resources they access. SQL Server 2005, and later, implements a form of this model called row versioning concurrency. It works by remembering the value of the data at the start of the transaction and checking that no other transaction has modified it before committing. If this optimism is justified for the pattern of activity within a database, it can improve performance by greatly reducing blocking. Kalen Delaney explains how it works in SQL Server.

• COM+ Connection Pooling Doesn't Appear to be working on SQL Server 2005 Cluster

  We have a COM+ Data Layer that utilized Connection Pooling. Its deployed to 3 clusters, 2 SQL Server 2000 and 1 SQL Server 2005 environment. We noticed today that our monitoring software is reporting Thousands of Logins per minute on the SQL Server 2005 box.   Hi there, I'm trying to setup SCOM(System Center Operations Manager 2007 (SCOM) – Platform Monitoring) on my Server 2008 machine using SQL Server 2008 running on the same machine. When I check my prerequisites I get problem on SQL and Active Directory components. (I'm running SQL server 2008 and Server 2008 with active directory not installed) Errors: 1.Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 required. Details: SQL Server 2005 SP1 is the next version of SQL Server. SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, is a complete data and analysis platform for large mission-critical business applications. The link provided in the resolution column is a trial version of the product and is not supported by the Microsoft SQL Server team In order to install active directory needs to be present. Details:Setup failed to verify the presence of Active Directory for this server. I've got a couple of questions I need answering, hope someone can help. Do I need to install Active Directory for SCOM to work? Can I run SCOM with an SQL 2008 Database? How do I get pass these problems?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 - Cannot create database snapshot

  Server: Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 Enterprise SQL: SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise X64 I have a default SQL Server instance, the SQL Server service account is running as a domain user. I am trying to create a database snapshot in the directory where the mdf files are stored. The T-SQL syntax is correct. The file system is NTFS. The error message I get is: Msg 1823, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 A database snapshot cannot be created because it failed to start. Msg 5119, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot make the file "e:\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDB.ss" a sparse file. Make sure the file system supports sparse files. The local SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER group has Full Control permission on the folder where I am trying to create the snapshot. I can fix the problem in two ways, neither of which are suitable. Add the SQL Server service (domain) account to the local Administrators group and restart the SQL service. Grant the local SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER group Full control on E:\ I have tried to change the owner of the DATA directory to SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER to no avail. I have no issue creating a new database Why can I not create a snapshot by giving permission only on the DATA folder? Update 23/09/2010: I have tried mrdenny's suggestion with no luck (but learned something new in the process), I suspect the problem may be due to the fact that the domain is a windows 2000 domain running in mixed mode. I had to install hotfix KB976494 for Server 2008 R2, as the SQL Server 2008 R2 installer would not verify the service account correctly with the domain. I noticed that Server 2000 isn't a supported operating system for SQL 2008 R2 but cannot find anything that would suggest it shouldn't work in a 2000 domain. I dis-joined the test server from the domain and changed the service accounts to the local service account and I still have the same issue. I will try to re-install the server without joining the domain and without the hotfix and see if the issue persists.

• Carbonite Restore Error after Windows Update

  I recently installed Windows 8 on my main machine, and I'm have an issue with Carbonite. I can't restore any files from my previous OS, only files that where backed up from the current OS. I can download them from the web service, but I can't restore them with the client. The error says "You don't have the necessary security permissions to restore this file." (The file on top was backed up from the new install, while the one on bottom was from the old install.) I'm also having another issue, where Carbonite doesn't think it's running in admin mode. I think it's probably related to this error. When I right click to restore a file, I can't choose a location to restore to. I contacted Carbonite, and they said it's a known issue that apparently happens when upgrade from XP to 7, but they wouldn't help me since I'm running a beta OS. Hopefully one of you fine folks will have an idea.

• I want to version control my entire slice

  I'm renting a slice (i.e., a VPS) from Slicehost. I've a spent a day or two filling up /usr with my favorite packages, /etc with configs and init scripts, and so on. Now I want to: save this whole setup somewhere (e.g., to load onto another machine). see what changes I've made to which files revert changes, tag revisions, and all that other good version control stuff Saving a disk image gives me (1), but not (2) and (3). Using Subversion (svn import / svn://someotherhost) might give me all three, but I expect problems if I actually try to check a project out into / and maintain .svn directories in root-owned areas. And to load my setup onto a fresh slice, I'd need to install an svn client on it first. Is there a good way to do what I want to do?

• Copy all installed programs & files in a hard disk (which has 32 bit Windows 7) and clone/transfer it to another computer which has 64 bit Windows 7

  I recently got a new PC which has a 64-bit Windows 7 installed. The current PC that I am using has a 32-bit Windows 7 installed. I would like to know if there is a software that can copy all my installed programs and files in the hard disk with the 32-bit Windows 7 PC and transfer it to the newer PC's hard disk which has a 64 bit version of Windows 7. This is essentially like "cloning" a hard disk but I would like to use a 64-bit OS in the target drive, instead of also using the 32-bit OS of the source drive. I would like to do this I can avoid reinstalling and reconfiguring my installed programs and files again on the new PC. If possible, I would like the new PC to work as it was in my previous PC, with the installed programs, configuration and files intact except that the OS is now 64-bit and the hard disk has a larger capacity. I have heard of programs that can clone a hard disk, but my concern is that the 32-bit Windows 7 OS will also be cloned to the new 64-bit PC. If it is not possible to transfer my installed programs and settings like the way I described, are there software that can make it easier to migrate my installed programs, their configurations and my files from a 32-bit Windows 7 PC to a 64-bit Windows 7 PC? Details: I have a SATA to USB connector/adapter to copy files in the current hard disk to the newer one. The two PCs are connected through LAN, so I can also transfer files through LAN. Both PCs only have one hard disk.

  I know Ghost and Clonezilla aren't able to build images of a system while the system is running(Without Rebooting). Haven't Checked on Acronis though, but i don't simpatize with private solutions. Question: Is there a software solution which is able to build a "Live" image? Would appreciate anwsers, since I'm one step away from building a Clonezilla test enviroment and this will just help on my decision. Thank you.

• Protecting Backups from Viruses

  Currently we are using ReadyNAS RN102 by NETGEAR to hold all our images from all our machines. My question is can viruses expand from the machines and infect the NAS drive and the backups? We are using AOMEI Backupper. EDIT: Basically, I want to keep my clean backups clean. I keep Daily, Weekly, Monthly achievable backups, my worry is a virus might attempt or try to infect these backups making using them worthless.

• Can't Connect SQL server - process being used by another process. Conflict with IIS?

  I'm having problem connecting to MS SQL Server (2012 Express) after accessing a database through IIS (web site). I can access the data through web site no problem, but I can't access the data from any other programs (i.e SSMS) until I reboot the SQL server. It seems that the connection stays open even if I close a browser. Here is error message I'm getting Unable to open the physical file "C:---------". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)". Unable to open the physical file "C:-------". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)". Cannot open user default database. Login failed. I tried it but it didn't help at all. What is the proper settings on SQL server or IIS in order to release process after closing a browser. How do I avoid getting this error? Thank you for your help
