• Hosting a site on amazon ec2

  I have recently bought an amazon ec2 instance. Now I want to host a website. I have googled and found some useful info but there is some confusion in my mind. Suppose domain name is "http://www.example.com" That's what I have done so far. I have configured my domain locally on amazon ec2 instance and it's working fine when I open that url in amazon ec2 instance's browser. I have used http://www.example.com in /etc/hosts file point it to 127.0.0.1 to open locally on instance. I have got one elastic ip address and associated it with the instance. I have changed http://www.example.com A's record with the elastic IP that I have got in above step. Now what should I do? When some user will open my website anywhere in the world, will it get pointed to my instanace's ip address? Have I done proper configurations for website on instance?

• Serving Compressed Files Amazon vs Lightty

  We are currently using amazon CloudFront to serve css and according to Amazon itself, Amazon CloudFront can serve both compressed and uncompressed files from an origin server. But while i check compression it shows everything fine in origin server but it shows notcompressed checking in the link with cloudfront. e.g. http://www.port80software.com/tools/compresscheck.asp?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimgsrv.mydomain.com%2Fen-UK%2Fsomething.css it would result with Compression status: (gzip) while with cloudfront http://www.port80software.com/tools/compresscheck.asp?url=http%3A%2F%2hereisit.cloudfront.net%2F%2Fsomething.css Compression status: Uncompressed Origin server is running lighttpd with mod_deflate however, allowed config is: deflate.allowed_encodings = ("bzip2", "gzip", "deflate") [i would think, putting extra allowed encoding wont affect as such.] Here i am clueless, what is the real issue.

But could not fix it: suddenly (after a year of service, no changes on my winscp settings) it gives me "network error connection timed out" (im using ec2-user) (also from the amazon console). • Amazon EC2 firewall rules & VPN connections

  I'm moving from Rackspace to Amazon EC2. One thing I like about our Rackspace setup is that it is extremely secure. The MySQL box can only be accessed via internal IPs, and we have a Cisco VPN firewall that allows us to dial in remotely and access port 3306 as though we were on the internal network. I'd like to figure out how to replicate this setup with EC2. How can I make the MySQL box so that port 3306 can only be accessed on the internal network? What about the VPN piece of things? I know Amazon has the VPC service, but it seems like that's for the purpose of connecting to an existing network. I don't have an existing network. I want to essentially create one inside Amazon and connect to that. What are my options? Any good tutorials on how to get started? Thanks in advance for your help

• Justification of Amazon EC2 Performance

  I have a .jar file that represents a server which receives over TCP an image in bytes (of size at most 500 kb) and writes it file. It then sobels this image and sends it over TCP socket to the client side. I ran it on my laptop and it was very fast. But when I put it on Amazon EC2 server m1.large instance, i found out it is very slow - around 10 times slower. It might be the inefficiency in the code algorithm but in fact my code is nothing but receive image (like any byte file) run the sobel algorithm and send. I have the following questions: 1- Is it normal performance of Amazon EC2 server- I have read the following links link1 and link2 2- Even if the code is not that efficient, the server is finally handling a very low load (just one client), does the "inefficient" code justify such performance? 3- My laptop is dual core only...Why would the amazon ec2 server have worse performance that my laptop? How is this explained? Excuse me for my ignorance.

• Windows 2008 additional disk going offline with reboots on Amazon EC2

  OK, so I took the stock Windows 2008 64-bit Amazon AMI and wanted to add a D: drive for page file space and crash dumps. I launched the instance with a second EBS volume attached as xvdf and went into Disk Management set it online, and added the page file and crash dump settings and all that works. But when I reboot, the box comes back up with that second drive as "Offline." How do I get that disk to automatically come online on reboot (or most notably, when I turn this into an AMI and launch more instances off it - I've tried that too and same deal with the D:).

  Hey guys, I am very new to linux, and amazon-ec2. I wanted to put a quick server. For some reason, when I sign in with my key pair, it prompts me for a username, I input ec2-user, and I'm in. The problem is that I don't have root access (and can't find the root password). I need to install screen to run the server in the background, and also create a new user, that doesn't have root, to run the server. Neither of which I can do without root.. Any help? • Amazon S3 not sending Content-Type header

  I have an application that downloads content from various sources. It relies on the "Content-Type" header being set on images. The majority of web-servers do this correctly but it appears Amazon S3 server is not setting the Content-Type. I assume Amazon servers are configured correctly so what could be the problem? Are these images not uploaded correctly? Or should I not be relying on content type being set? Example Thanks

  I am new at Amazon Cloud technologies. I ve set up an Amazon Linux instance created my keys and assigned elastic IP. Also, I opened all TCP, UDP, ICMP ports(ok, it's very dangerous, but I am using it for test purposes). I ve also installed Apache server and enabled it. • Error after installing mysqlnd_ms

  I am working on Amazon EC2 using the Amazon Linux AMI which is based on CentOS. I have installed php54 and php54-mysqlnd. I then do a "sudo pecl install myslqnd_ms" This installs fine. I add the extension into the php.ini file. Then I start httpd, and when I do in the error log I see: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib64/php/modules/mysqlnd_ms.so' - /usr/lib64/php/modules/mysqlnd_ms.so: undefined symbol: mysqlnd_globals in Unknown on line 0 Googling this lead me to: https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=62276&edit=1 and http://forums.famillecollet.com/viewtopic.php?id=242 neither of which helped me much. I am trying to stick to stock pre built binaries from the main YUM repo if possible. What would be the best solution here? Thanks in advance

I can know the root device root for some default AMI such as Amazon Linux AMI 2012.03 The Amazon Linux AMI 2012.03 is an EBS-backed, PV-GRUB image. It includes Linux 3.2, AWS tools, and repository access to multiple versions of MySQL, PostgreSQL, Python, Ruby, and Tomcat. Root Device Size: 8 GB And the last row displayed 8GB. However, if I find AMI in Community Page, it does not show the root device size. Can anyone know how to use the instance such as centOS that is not provided by default but it is under 10GB so that I can still free use?

  Hey all, I'm working on getting an IPSec VPN working between Amazon EC2 and my on-premise. The goal is to be able to safely administer stuff, up/download data, etc. over that tunnel. I have gotten the tunnel up in openswan between a Fedora 12 instance with an elastic IP and a Cisco router that's also NATted. I think the ipsec part is OK, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to route traffic that way; there's no "ipsec0" virutal interface because on Amazon you have to use netkey and not KLIPS for the vpn. I hear iptables may be required and I'm an iptables noob. On the left (Amazon), I have a 10. network. Box 1 is privately 10.254.110.A, publically IP 184.73.168.B. Netkey tunnel is up. Box 2 is publically 130.164.26.C, privately 130.164.0.D And my .conf is: conn ni type= tunnel authby= secret left= 10.254.110.A leftid= 184.73.168.B leftnexthop= %defaultroute leftsubnet= 10.254.0.0/32 right= 130.164.26.C rightid= 130.164.0.D rightnexthop= %defaultroute rightsubnet= 130.164.0.0/18 keyexchange= ike pfs= no auto= start keyingtries= 3 disablearrivalcheck=no ikelifetime= 240m auth= esp compress= no keylife= 60m forceencaps= yes esp= 3des-md5 I added a route to box 1 (130.164.0.0/18 via 10.254.110.A dev eth0) but that doesn't do it for predictable reasons, when I traceroute the traffic's still going "around" and not through the vpn. • A-2-Z web hosting on Amazon AWS

  All, I am studying web dvp, and one of my classes is project-based. We have to build a functional site that demonstrate our understanding of: HTML, CSS, Javascript, php, MySQL, And potentially Ajax or some other web component. For the project, we can use a local server using WampServer and basically build the site entirely on our laptop. If I have time, I would like to create a real site, and I thought it would be a good way to familiarize myself with Amazon's AWS services. So if I purchase a domain name, can I rely on AWS to host the site from A-to-Z? I understand I can use AWS to host content, the database, and do the background computations, if needed. What else do I need and what are the parts that AWS cannot help me with? Second, is there good documentation for a beginner to navigate AWS and learn how to use it (either on Amazon, or some 3rd party sites, or even a good book, as long as is up to date). The ideal documentation would be a tutorial on creating a web site from a-to-z on AWS, as detailed as possible. As you can guess, I have limited understanding of the IT issues. I have 0 Linux or sysadmin experience, but this is a good opportunity to change that. I hope you can help me. Thank you, JDelage PS: Please keep the answers AWS-specific. At this point, I am only interested in alternative services to the extent that they plug a hole in Amazon's offering.

• Using AWS or Azure, what to do about emails?

  I'm coming from a background of paying a hosting company X amount per month for a server. This server comes with IIS, WebsitePanel and Smartermail all bundled together. When I create a new domain using WebsitePanel it automatically creates my email account. All I then need to do is configure my DNS to point to the server. I've decided that it is more cost efficient to move to AWS / Azure. Has anyone come from a similar background and moved onto a cloud system? I'd be interested to know what you did regarding emails. So far, these are the suggestions I've seen: Use Google Apps for each domain Use something like Elastic Email to sent out emails Launch a new instance and host an email server on that The first option seems like quite a lot of manual configuration, the second one works good with outgoing emails but what about receiving? Option 3 would make it less cost effective. What is your experience?
