  • Windows 7: Computer does not enter automatic standby

    My Windows 7 PC is set to automatically enter standby ("sleep mode") after 30 minutes. For some reason it stopped working a few days ago (it keeps on running). Is there some systematic way to determine what is preventing the system from automatically entering sleep mode after the designated idle time? Manually sending the machine to sleep works fine. The monitor also enters power save mode automatically, so the "idling detection" of Windows seems to work fine.

  • Enable automatic driver install in Windows XP

    When Windows detects new hardware (be it graphic card or USB Peripheral) it automatically installs driver and if it can't find a driver it shows "Found New hardware wizard" that allows you to manually select a driver. My problem is that this "Found New hardware wizard" shows up every time when I plug a new device and I have to click Next Next Next.. until it finishes installation. It's just like in Windows 98 ;) I want to fix it to the way it's supposed to be. It's got nothing to do with "Windows Update" and "Driver Signing" settings in "System properties - Hardware" tab, those are on default settings. Here is the same problem I have, but those replies ale completely useless

    I was wondering how you could get apache2 to redirect http://server.com:8080 to https://server.com:8080 - I have an ISPConfig 3 setup and the http://server.com:8080 virtual host currently prints a 400 back request error given that I've tried adding RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !^on$ [NC] RewriteRule . https://%{HTTP_HOST}:8080%{REQUEST_URI} [L] to the ispconfig.vhost file (and reloading the conf) with no success --edit!-- I've been playing around with it and adding an 'always redirect to google' into the ispconfig vhost and it works once you've already started talking ssl to it. this means the non-ssl connections are getting 'bad request errors' before the vhost is loaded... but where...? --edit 2!-- nope, the ssl is handled exclusively by the virtual host - if I turn off the ssl engine then the rewriting works perfectly (but obviously there is no ssl at https://) thanks!

    The server is set to its default configuration to recycle the app pool every 1740 minutes. When this happens the following message is logged: A worker process with process id of '1234' serving application pool 'XX' has requested a recycle because the worker process reached its allowed processing time limit. Directly after logging this message, the web site is unresponsive. The only way to get it back online is by running iisreset manually. Does anyone know a fix for this behavior, other than turning the recycle feature off? Is it a known problem?

  • Disabling Skype automatic update

    How to stop skype from searching or at least downloading update without consent? I want that annoying "Update skype now" dialog box that keeps popping up before I log in to Skype and after I log in to Skype from appearing at all. Few months ago this used to work: 1) C:\Users\”YourName”\AppData\Local\Temp folder. 2) Find the file called SkypeSetup.exe, and delete it. 3) Create a text file in the folder, rename it to SkypeSetup.exe 4) Right click on the new file you just created and ask for properties. 5) Next left click the security tab then left click the advanced button. 6) Now left click “Change Permissions” and then “Add”. Enter “Everyone” (without the quotes) where it sez’, “Enter the object name to select (examples):” and click “OK”. 7) Now check the “Deny” box for “Full control” and click “OK”. obtained from HERE, but now it seems this has stopped working. The worst part is Skype seems to download ~30MB of executable setup file without my knowledge before bugging me with the dialog box to update it, and there seems to be no direct way to disable this download. And disabling the skype updater service does not seem to work either. Is there any kind of patch or registry hack I can use to stop skype from auto updating? Or should I start looking for an alternative to Skype altogether?

    Hi all, Adobe Flash Player is set to automatically check for updates on Windows startup. I've always wondered where exactly it is set to do this. Checking the running services, as well as msconfig does not yield its location. The message in question looks like this: http://www.technipages.com/disable-an-update-to-your-adobe-flash-player-is-available-message-forever.html I know how to disable it via Adobe's web site (instructions are included in link above), but I'm interested in knowing where exactly in Windows is this set to perform this action? I have done some research on this, and people keep saying to check the following registry locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce or the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run However, I have checked those locations, and I still cannot locate where this updater is stored. I'm pretty sure that malware also uses this technique to automatically load upon startup, and since it's not in the typical location(s) that a user would look, it's well hidden.   • Remote desktop sessions - Unwanted automatic log off after period of time

    I'm having an issue whenever I connect to any of our servers via RDP - After a certain period of time, it seems to close these sessions, closing all the applications i had open etc... This is particularly annoying if I am running a long process - for example, copying a file - it cuts it off... I then re-connect via RDP, and it effectively loads a new session. Is this set somewhere in Group Policy? Or somewhere else? This is happening on Windows 2008 (it may also be on our 2003 servers, although I haven't noticed...)

    I'm configuring CentOS 6.2 and have seen a few "[abrt] full crash report" emails. I understand that abrt is useful for creating crash dumps and what not, so I don't want to disable the service, I just would like to stop getting the crash report emails. I probably have to add something to the config file in /etc/abrt/abrt.conf. I can't seem to find anything in my searches. Any idea? Thanks. Edit: Here is my abrt.conf, which is rather simple.     We have several remote, unmanned terminals where I require a VNC server, as using Remote Desktop prevents others using the terminals. Often the connection to one of these is extremely slow, and manually using Remote Desktop to perform the VNC installation is painstaking. What I would like to do is build a package that I could copy onto the remote terminal using Remote Desktop, and then have the package executed to install and configure VNC when the terminal restarts, as they all automatically restart nightly. The terminals are all running Windows XP. Also, out of the many VNC variants out there, which would suit this application?

  • Dedicated server automatic backup solution

    I have a dedicated Ubuntu web server in a cloud environment, and I am looking for a nice way to do automated backups. I would like to backup some directories with web apps, and all my MySql databases. As for destination: make snapshots every two hours localy, and every six hours to a remote ftp server. Also delete backup archives older than seven days(localy + ftp), and notify on any problems by email. Now to achieve some of this functionality I use cron + shell script, and http://www.mysqldumper.net/, but really that doesn't answer my needs. Mysqldumper doesn't know automaticly about new databases, and shell script does not notify on problems. It's something I have to check out from time to time, and i don't have trust for. I googled a while, and seems like most people solve this stuff with shell scripts. Is this a method you can trust? Are there any web-gui tools, I'm missing? Maybe there is a smarter startegy for doing this? I'm a little bit confused.

    I've got a lot of computers on the domain here that do not have remote desktop enabled. I can open the command prompt and do this command: REG.exe ADD \\[the machine im doing this to]\HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\\"Terminal Server" /v fDenyTSConnections /t REG_DWORD /d 0 and it works perfectly fine, except for one thing - it makes a prompt asking if I'm sure I want to do this, Yes/No. How would I go about having a batch file auto-answer YES to this, so I don't have to type it every time? It wouldn't be a problem if it was just a couple hundred machines, but there's plenty more than that and it would take a while to do this by hand. Not to mention I might have to sweep a few times to make sure every computer is turned on and is affected by this.

  • Reasonable automatic HTML to PDF conversion (in UNIX/Linux environment)

    Is there a way to generate PDF documents from HTML files automatically in Linux where the PDF offers some kind of reasonable level of resemblance to the input file? A command-line tool - as opposed to an interactive GUI of some kind - is key. I have tried htmldoc and some related cousins, of course. But these tools are hopelessly stone-age; htmldoc doesn't support CSS at all. You won't find a lot of HTML documents these days that don't have at least some CSS styling. I don't really care about stupid effects or minor embellishments, but the issue is that CSS is at the core of most layouts these days; not many folks are using 6 layers of nested tables anymore. So, if the conversion tool has no grasp of CSS whatsoever, it's not just a matter of "the document doesn't look quite right"; it is likely to not meet the minimum standard of usability at all. It has been suggested to me by some folks to try to use the Gecko rendering engine to generate images that can be converted to PDFs, but I have no idea how one would go about doing this, let alone easily. I have no trouble believing that there are good commercial tools that do this, but I'm really looking for an open-source package if possible, as the endeavour itself is an open-source one and doesn't pay.     Hi I have a single monitor, but with a wide resolution. Some times it would be helpful to have two applications running next to each other. Is there a tool to quickly tell windows to resize the two applications to fit the desktop? Perhaps even with an option to make the one application use 75% and the other 25% I know the Windows 7 Alt+left/right arrow feature, which is nice, but still needs too many clicks.

    Is there a tool or application that can help me quickly organize my iphone applications? The standard way of dragging and dropping 1 application at a time in folder is too frustrating for me. I gave up after 1 hour of trying... I found it to be such a waste of time ... I am looking for an application to automatically organize my apps in the standard folder categories at least (Productivity, Navigation, Photography, etc). I was not able to find one in the iTunes store. Any suggestions?

  • Scheduling Automatic Backups for Virtual Private Web Server running CENTOS 6.3 and WHM

    I'm pretty new to administering my own VPS - but thus far am finding it quite a compelling experience. There's something quite refreshing about having complete control over everything it does. One thing that I would like to look at is a suitable backup solution (a few times a day). My current setup is as follows: I'm running a CENTOS 6.3 VPS with a single 25GB hard drive solely for the purpose of hosting websites. I'm using WHM & cPanel for administering them. I now plan on adding an additional hard disk and hooking it up to my VPS. What I'm not sure about is how I get the two disks talking and get the backup process going. I'm not a seasons SSH-er so don't really know where to start. I'm hosting with Serverlove (one of the best hosting providers I've used) and am provided with a number of unique identifiers for each hard disk so I imagine these may play a part in linking them together. I appreciate that this is a little vague (I'm clutching at straws) but any assistance is very much appreciated.

Users will register and afterwards they will receive a username and password for their personal site. The system will work like ecommerce platforms such as www.shopify.com, www.bigcommerce.com, etc.. where users sign up and a new web-shop is created for them instantly. I have been searching for a while how i can create a script to automate this task but couldn't find any tutorials. Am using LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySql and PHP). Am asking if someone can guide me how to write such script or maybe point me to a tutorial or a book or probably similar scripts to automate this task.     I am hosting several websites which each of run their own Python process and write *.log output files, but the directory structure is not standardized. Example: -rw-r--r-- 1 plone plone 125M 2012-08-29 11:35 ./x/var/log/instance-Z2.log -rw-r--r-- 1 plone plone 19M 2012-08-29 00:07 ./zope2.9/y/log/event.log -rw-r--r-- 1 plone plone 188M 2012-08-13 00:09 ./zope2.9/y/log/Z2.log -rw-r--r-- 1 plone plone 137M 2010-11-16 09:41 ./zope2.9/y/log/event.log I'd like to make log rotate autodiscovery these log files and run a log rotation on them, as opposite to manually type in every log file to logrotate conf. Does any existing tools offer this kind of log file discovery and rotation capabilities, without manually specifying each file? If not... then just write a shell script which generates the logrotate conf?

After all other services have started I would like to start these up - but I am a bit worried about the load of starting all 4 at the same time, so maybe a short delay would be necessary. How should I go about this?
