  • This Week in Geek History: Gmail Goes Public, Deep Blue Wins at Chess, and the Birth of Thomas Edison

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Every week we bring you a snapshot of the week in Geek History. This week we’re taking a peek at the public release of Gmail, the first time a computer won against a chess champion, and the birth of prolific inventor Thomas Edison. Gmail Goes Public It’s hard to believe that Gmail has only been around for seven years and that for the first three years of its life it was invite only. In 2007 Gmail dropped the invite only requirement (although they would hold onto the “beta” tag for another two years) and opened its doors for anyone to grab a username @gmail. For what seemed like an entire epoch in internet history Gmail had the slickest web-based email around with constant innovations and features rolling out from Gmail Labs. Only in the last year or so have major overhauls at competitors like Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail brought other services up to speed. Can’t stand reading a Week in Geek History entry without a random fact? Here you go: gmail.com was originally owned by the Garfield franchise and ran a service that delivered Garfield comics to your email inbox. No, we’re not kidding. Deep Blue Proves Itself a Chess Master Deep Blue was a super computer constructed by IBM with the sole purpose of winning chess matches. In 2011 with the all seeing eye of Google and the amazing computational abilities of engines like Wolfram Alpha we simply take powerful computers immersed in our daily lives for granted. The 1996 match against reigning world chest champion Garry Kasparov where in Deep Blue held its own, but ultimately lost, in a  4-2 match shook a lot of people up. What did it mean if something that was considered such an elegant and quintessentially human endeavor such as chess was so easy for a machine? A series of upgrades helped Deep Blue outright win a match against Kasparov in 1997 (seen in the photo above). After the win Deep Blue was retired and disassembled. Parts of Deep Blue are housed in the National Museum of History and the Computer History Museum. Birth of Thomas Edison Thomas Alva Edison was one of the most prolific inventors in history and holds an astounding 1,093 US Patents. He is responsible for outright inventing or greatly refining major innovations in the history of world culture including the phonograph, the movie camera, the carbon microphone used in nearly every telephone well into the 1980s, batteries for electric cars (a notion we’d take over a century to take seriously), voting machines, and of course his enormous contribution to electric distribution systems. Despite the role of scientist and inventor being largely unglamorous, Thomas Edison and his tumultuous relationship with fellow inventor Nikola Tesla have been fodder for everything from books, to comics, to movies, and video games. Other Notable Moments from This Week in Geek History Although we only shine the spotlight on three interesting facts a week in our Geek History column, that doesn’t mean we don’t have space to highlight a few more in passing. This week in Geek History: 1971 – Apollo 14 returns to Earth after third Lunar mission. 1974 – Birth of Robot Chicken creator Seth Green. 1986 – Death of Dune creator Frank Herbert. Goodnight Dune. 1997 – Simpsons becomes longest running animated show on television. Have an interesting bit of geek trivia to share? Shoot us an email to [email protected] with “history” in the subject line and we’ll be sure to add it to our list of trivia. • URL Rewrite, ServerVariables, URL Parts, HTTP to HTTPS Redirect. Week 9

    - by OWScott
Last week I gave an intro to URL Rewrite; covering the basics and giving a real world example.  This week I dive in deeper and cover ServerVariables, the parts that make up the URL and another real world example of redirecting HTTP to HTTPS. This is week 9 of a 52 week series on various web administration related tasks.  Past and future videos can be found here. For reference, in the video I mentioned the following two blog posts: Viewing ServerVariables For a Site Parts of the URL available to URL Rewrite

  • what is the most elegant way of showing first week in a month

    - by ooo
In C#, i want to show the first week in a calendar (in a html table) and i am trying to figure out the most elegant algorithm to generate the right days. If the first day of the week is not Sunday, i want to show the days of preceding month (like you would see on a regular calendar). So, as an input you have a current month. In this case May. I want to generate this: Month: May <table> <tr> <th>S</th> <th>M</th> <th>T</th> <th>W</th> <th>TH</th> <th>F</th> <th>Sa</th> </tr> <tr> <td>25</td> <td>26</td> <td>27</td> <td>28</td> <td>29</td> <td>30</td> <td>1</td> </tr></table> so it should display something like this (ignore the alignment) S | M | T | W | Th | F | Sa | 25 - 26 - 27 - 28 - 29 - 30 - 1 given that each month would have the start of day be a different day of the week, i am trying to figure out an elegant way to get the values of this data using the DateTime object. I see it has a dayofweek property on a date. i am generating this table in C# on my server to pass down to a html page.

  • Linux clock loses 10 minutes every week

    - by PaKempf
One of my linux server's clock loses 10 minutes every now and then, nearly every week. I update the time so it stays correct, and although it doesn't really bother me, i'd like to fix it. I've been searching around a bit. Nothing can be responsible in the crontab, and i can't find any related message in the logs. Some people seem to use ntp to fix that kind of issue, but i'd prefer not to use an unecessary component on it. • How To Get YEARWEEK() To See Sunday As The Start Of The Week?

    - by tan
I'm trying to get the YEARWEEK function to see Sunday as the 1st day of the week. An example date is: Sunday 1st Mar 2009 Here is my sql SELECT YEARWEEK('2009-03-01') and the result is - 200909 Which is week 9. I believe it is telling me this is week 9 because it sees the sunday as the last day of the previous week. How would I get this function to see sunday as the 1st day of the week and therefore return as week 10?

  • Calendar Table - Week number of month

    - by Saif Khan
I have a calendar table with data from year 2000 to 2012 (2012 wasn't intentional!). I just realize that I don't have the week number of month (e.g In January 1,2,3,4 February 1,2,3,4) How do I go about calculating the week numbers in a month to fill this table? Here is the table schema CREATE TABLE [TCalendar] ( [TimeKey] [int] NOT NULL , [FullDateAlternateKey] [datetime] NOT NULL , [HolidayKey] [tinyint] NULL , [IsWeekDay] [tinyint] NULL , [DayNumberOfWeek] [tinyint] NULL , [EnglishDayNameOfWeek] [nvarchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL , [SpanishDayNameOfWeek] [nvarchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL , [FrenchDayNameOfWeek] [nvarchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL , [DayNumberOfMonth] [tinyint] NULL , [DayNumberOfYear] [smallint] NULL , [WeekNumberOfYear] [tinyint] NULL , [EnglishMonthName] [nvarchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL , [SpanishMonthName] [nvarchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL , [FrenchMonthName] [nvarchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL , [MonthNumberOfYear] [tinyint] NULL , [CalendarQuarter] [tinyint] NULL , [CalendarYear] [char] (4) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL , [CalendarSemester] [tinyint] NULL , [FiscalQuarter] [tinyint] NULL , [FiscalYear] [char] (4) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL , [FiscalSemester] [tinyint] NULL , [IsLastDayInMonth] [tinyint] NULL , CONSTRAINT [PK_TCalendar] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [TimeKey] ) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] GO

  • Oracle SQL: Query results from previous X isoweeks () (where X might be > 52)

    - by tommy-o-dell
How could I adapt this query to show the previous 61 weeks? (still exlcluding the current week). My query currently shows me the total weekly sales for 2010 grouped by ISO Week and ISO Year (exlcuding the current week). select to_char(order_date,'IYYY') as iso_year, to_char(order_date,'IW') as iso_week, sum(sale_amount) from orders where to_char(order_date,'IW') <> to_char(SYSDATE) and to_char(order_date,'IYYY') = 2010 group by to_char(order_date,'IYYY') to_char(order_date,'IW') I realize I could probably just omit the "2010" requirement, order by desc and limit results to a certain bnumber of rows. But that just doesn't seem right! Much appreciate any help pointing me in the right direction!

  • I just got a linode VPS a week ago and I've been flagged for SSH scanning

    - by meder
I got a 32-bit Debian VPS from http://linode.com and I really haven't done any sort of advanced configuration for securing it ( port 22; password enabled ). It seems somehow there is ssh scanning going on from my IP, I'm being flagged as this is against the TOS. I've been SSHing only from my home Comcast ISP which I run Linux on. Is this a common thing when getting a new vps? Are there any standard security configuration tips? I'm quite confused as to how my machine has been accused of this ssh scanning.

  • PCI scan findings and problems with week ciphers on ports 993,443,995,465

    - by user64991
From PCI scan results: Synops is : The remote service encrypts traffic using a protocol with known weaknesses . Description : The remote service accepts connections encrypted using SSL 2.0, which reportedly suffers from several cryptographic flaws and has been deprecated for several years. An attacker may be able to exploit these issues to conduct man-in-the-middle attacks or decrypt communications between the affected service and clients . See also : http://www.schneier.com/paper-ssl.pdf Solution: Consult the application's documentation to disable SSL 2.0 and use SSL 3.0 or TLS 1.0 instead. Risk Factor: Medium / CVSS Base Score : 2 (AV:R/AC:L/Au:NR/C:P/A:N/I:N/B:N) I have tried to change SSLProtocol all -SSLv2 to SSLProtocol -ALL +SSLv3 +TLSv1 And SSLCipherSuite ALL:!ADH:!EXPORT:!SSLv2:RC4+RSA:+HIGH:+MEDIUM:+LOW To SSLCipherSuite ALL:!ADH:RC4+RSA:+HIGH:!MEDIUM:!LOW:!SSLv2:!EXPORT But using SSLdigger, it shows the same result. Is this the right way to do something like this?

  • Debian Linux server hangs after a week or so

    - by Alex Flo
I have 2 Debian Linux 6.0.4 servers that have a strange behaviour: after 5-7-10 days they hang. By this I mean the servers need to be restarted and before that ping won't answer. I've been struggling with this problem for a couple of months now and here's some thoughts/what I tried without being able to solve the problem. I changed the RAM on a server. Being 2 different servers I doubt that it could be something related to hardware as a 3rd identical server won't have this problem. I logged the server load and when it crashes the load is fine (quite low) I cannot find anything in the server logs, logs are fine till the server freezes. I don't have access to console unfortunately. While I have years of admin experience I have never encountered such an issue and right now I have no idea where else to investigate. If you have an idea of what I could try in order to fix the problem please share it with me:-)

  • Problems with Program startup in WIn 7 this week

    - by PyNEwbie
I have a program (ISYS) that I have been using since 2006. It migrated successfully to Windows 7. Just yesterday it started manifesting this strange behavior. The program has a selector to allow you to select a directory that might have relevant files for the program. As of yesterday the program will only let me select folders on the C drive. For example I have a folder on D that I need to access with this program - from the GUI when I select the D drive the directory list does not load, instead it churns away using 17% of the CPU cycles. I have let it run for an hour several times. I have found that I can get the directory I want by using a batch file to start the program but this limits my ability to do certain things I really need to use the GUI. I did a number of reboots and other tests - I disconnected drives but once I try to select some directory on a drive other than C it churns away. I have experimented quite a bit and am convinced (which means I am wrong) that this has something to do with some setting change on my computer that I can't figure out as I don't see any updates. Since ISYS has not been updated I feel confident it is something internal. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Printing out this week's dates in perl

    - by ABach
Hi folks, I have the following loop to calculate the dates of the current week and print them out. It works, but I am swimming in the amount of date/time possibilities in perl and want to get your opinion on whether there is a better way. Here's the code I've written: #!/usr/bin/env perl use warnings; use strict; use DateTime; # Calculate numeric value of today and the # target day (Monday = 1, Sunday = 7); the # target, in this case, is Monday, since that's # when I want the week to start my $today_dt = DateTime->now; my $today = $today_dt->day_of_week; my $target = 1; # Create DateTime copies to act as the "bookends" # for the date range my ($start, $end) = ($today_dt->clone(), $today_dt->clone()); if ($today == $target) { # If today is the target, "start" is already set; # we simply need to set the end date $end->add( days => 6 ); } else { # Otherwise, we calculate the Monday preceeding today # and the Sunday following today my $delta = ($target - $today + 7) % 7; $start->add( days => $delta - 7 ); $end->add( days => $delta - 1 ); } # I clone the DateTime object again because, for some reason, # I'm wary of using $start directly... my $cur_date = $start->clone(); while ($cur_date <= $end) { my $date_ymd = $cur_date->ymd; print "$date_ymd\n"; $cur_date->add( days => 1 ); } As mentioned, this works - but is it the quickest/most efficient/etc.? I'm guessing that quickness and efficiency may not necessarily go together, but your feedback is very appreciated.

  • Creating a list of most popular posts of the past week - Wordpress

    - by Gary Woods
    I have created a widget for my Wordpress platform that displays the most popular posts of the week. However, there is an issue with it. It counts the most popular posts from Monday, not the past 7 days. For instance, this means that on Tuesday, it will only include posts from Tuesday and Monday. Here is my widget code: <?php class PopularWidget extends WP_Widget { function PopularWidget(){ $widget_ops = array('description' => 'Displays Popular Posts'); $control_ops = array('width' => 400, 'height' => 300); parent::WP_Widget(false,$name='ET Popular Widget',$widget_ops,$control_ops); } /* Displays the Widget in the front-end */ function widget($args, $instance){ extract($args); $title = apply_filters('widget_title', empty($instance['title']) ? 'Popular This Week' : $instance['title']); $postsNum = empty($instance['postsNum']) ? '' : $instance['postsNum']; $show_thisweek = isset($instance['thisweek']) ? (bool) $instance['thisweek'] : false; echo $before_widget; if ( $title ) echo $before_title . $title . $after_title; ?> <?php $additional_query = $show_thisweek ? '&year=' . date('Y') . '&w=' . date('W') : ''; query_posts( 'post_type=post&posts_per_page='.$postsNum.'&orderby=comment_count&order=DESC' . $additional_query ); ?> <div class="widget-aligned"> <h3 class="box-title">Popular Articles</h3> <div class="blog-entry"> <ol> <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <li><h4 class="title"><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h4></li> <?php endwhile; endif; wp_reset_query(); ?> </ol> </div> </div> <!-- end widget-aligned --> <div style="clear:both;"></div> <?php echo $after_widget; } /*Saves the settings. */ function update($new_instance, $old_instance){ $instance = $old_instance; $instance['title'] = stripslashes($new_instance['title']); $instance['postsNum'] = stripslashes($new_instance['postsNum']); $instance['thisweek'] = 0; if ( isset($new_instance['thisweek']) ) $instance['thisweek'] = 1; return $instance; } /*Creates the form for the widget in the back-end. */ function form($instance){ //Defaults $instance = wp_parse_args( (array) $instance, array('title'=>'Popular Posts', 'postsNum'=>'','thisweek'=>false) ); $title = htmlspecialchars($instance['title']); $postsNum = htmlspecialchars($instance['postsNum']); # Title echo '<p><label for="' . $this->get_field_id('title') .   • Converting from a day of week to unix time in PHP

    - by Rob
Hi, I'm trying to get the unix time for date strings that are formatted like so: 'second sunday of march 2010' 'first sunday of november 2010' I was under the impression that strtotime could handle such a string, but apparently not, as this returns false. How can I convert to unix time when given a day of week, which one of those in the month (ie. first, second, etc.), a month and a year.

  • Get the date of a given day in a given week...

    - by Sean.C
i need to start at a year-month and work out what the date it is in a given week, on a given day within that week.. i.e year: 2009 month: 10 week: 5 day-number: 0 would return 2009-10-25 00:00:00 which is a sunday. Notice week 5, there is no day 0 in week 5 in 2009-10 as the sunday in that logical week is 2009-11-01 00:00:00... so week 5 would always return the last possible date for the given day in the given month.. if you havn't guessed already i'm messing with the c struct TIME_ZONE_INFORMATION (link text) which is pretty crazy if i'm fair... Date math and SQL are something to be admired, sadly its something i have never really dug deep into beyond stripping times. Any help would be greatly appriciated. PS: mssql 2005 btw..
