  • iPhone application lifecycle

    - by iter
    InterfaceBuilder generates this method for me in fooAppDelegate.m: - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application { // Override point for customization after app launch [window addSubview:[navigationController view]]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; } IB also puts UIWindow *window; in fooAppDelegate.h and @synthesize window; in fooAppDelegate.m, and correspondingly for navigationController. IB generates code to release window and navigationController in dealloc. I cannot see any code that allocates and initializes the window and the navigationController. I wonder where that happens. • Why is this leaking memory? UIImage `cellForRowAtIndexPath:`

    - by Emil
    Hey. Instruments' Leaks tells me that this UIImage is leaking: UIImage *image = [[UIImage alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:[imagesPath stringByAppendingPathComponent:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"/%@.png", [postsArrayID objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]]]]; // If image contains anything, set cellImage to image. If image is empty, try one more time or use noImage.png, set in IB if (image != nil){ // If image != nil, set cellImage to that image cell.cellImage.image = image; } image = nil; [image release]; (class cell (custom table view cell) also releases cellImage in dealloc method). I haven't got a clue of why it's leaking, but it certainly is. The images gets loaded multiple times in a cellForRowAtIndexPath:-method. The first three cells' image does not leak (130px high, all the space avaliable). Leaks gives me no other info than that a UIImage allocated here in the code leaks. Can you help me figure it out? Thanks :)

  • keyDown works but i get beeps

    - by Oscar
    I just got my keydown method to work. But i get system beep everytime i press key. i have no idea whats wrong. • checking player prefs from unity in xcode

    - by user313100
    I made a simple scene that has some GUI buttons in Unity. When you press a button it will set a player preference to 1. I have a button for facebook, twitter and a store. In XCode, when the value hits 1, it switches to a new window with facebook, twitter or the store. My problem is that when I try and retrieve the player preferences in XCode, they always come up as null. To compound my confusion, my code seems to respond to the switch to 1 and it switches to the new window when the value hits 1. Any ideas why it manages to switch to the other window and why I am getting null values? - (void) applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication*)application { printf_console("-> applicationDidFinishLaunching()\n"); NSUserDefaults *userDefaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; [userDefaults setInteger:0 forKey:@"Store"]; [userDefaults setInteger:0 forKey:@"Facebook"]; [userDefaults setInteger:0 forKey:@"Twitter"]; _storeWindow = [[UIWindow alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] bounds]]; _facebookWindow = [[UIWindow alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] bounds]]; _twitterWindow = [[UIWindow alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] bounds]]; viewControllerSK = [[SKViewController alloc]initWithNibName:@"SKViewController" bundle:nil]; viewControllerFacebook = [[xutils_exampleViewController alloc]initWithNibName:@"FacebookViewController" bundle:nil]; viewControllerTwitter = [[xutils_exampleViewController2 alloc]initWithNibName:@"TwitterViewController" bundle:nil]; [_storeWindow addSubview:viewControllerSK.view]; [_facebookWindow addSubview:viewControllerFacebook.view]; [_twitterWindow addSubview:viewControllerTwitter.view]; [SKStoreManager sharedManager]; [self startUnity:application]; } - (void) applicationDidBecomeActive:(UIApplication*)application { printf_console("-> applicationDidBecomeActive()\n"); if (gDidResignActive == true) { UnitySetAudioSessionActive(true); UnityPause(false); } gDidResignActive = false; [self newTimer]; } - (void) applicationWillResignActive:(UIApplication*)application { printf_console("-> applicationDidResignActive()\n"); UnitySetAudioSessionActive(false); UnityPause(true); gDidResignActive = true; } - (void) applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning:(UIApplication*)application { printf_console("WARNING -> applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning()\n"); } - (void) applicationWillTerminate:(UIApplication*)application { printf_console("-> applicationWillTerminate()\n"); UnityCleanup(); } -(void)newTimer { NSTimer *theTimer = [self getTimer]; [theTimer retain]; [[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] addTimer: theTimer forMode: NSDefaultRunLoopMode]; } -(NSTimer *)getTimer { NSTimer *theTimer; theTimer = [NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:1.0 target:self selector: @selector(onLoop) userInfo:nil repeats:YES]; return [theTimer autorelease]; } -(void)onLoop { NSUserDefaults *userDefaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; //NSLog(@"FB: %@", [userDefaults integerForKey:@"Facebook"]); if ([userDefaults integerForKey:@"Store"] != 1 && [userDefaults integerForKey:@"Facebook"] != 1 && [userDefaults integerForKey:@"Twitter"] != 1) { UnityPause(FALSE); _window.hidden = NO; _storeWindow.hidden = YES; _facebookWindow.hidden = YES; _twitterWindow.hidden = YES; [_window makeKeyWindow]; } if ([userDefaults integerForKey:@"Store"] == 1) { UnityPause(TRUE); _storeWindow.hidden = NO; _window.hidden = YES; [_storeWindow makeKeyWindow]; } if ([userDefaults integerForKey:@"Facebook"] == 1) { UnityPause(TRUE); _facebookWindow.hidden = NO; _window.hidden = YES; [_facebookWindow makeKeyWindow]; } if ([userDefaults integerForKey:@"Twitter"] == 1) { UnityPause(TRUE); _twitterWindow.hidden = NO; _window.hidden = YES; [_twitterWindow makeKeyWindow]; } } -(void) dealloc { DestroySurface(&_surface); [_context release]; _context = nil; [_window release]; [_storeWindow release]; [_facebookWindow release]; [_twitterWindow release]; [viewControllerSK release]; [viewControllerFacebook release]; [viewControllerTwitter release]; [super dealloc]; }

  • addObjectsFromArray

    - by derek.lo
    I have a question about memory management when using the addObjectsFromArray method. Basically, I have 2 arrays defined in the appDelegate. I need these 2 arrays for the duration of my application's runtime. I therefore release them in my appDelegate's dealloc method. When I go to use these two arrays in a class, I want one array to store the values from the other, so that the other can have it's contents removed, but still stick around for use. Something like this: [appDelegate.arrayTwo addObjectsFromArray:appDelegate.arrayOne]; [appDelegate.arrayOne removeAllObjects]; I'm getting the compiler error: EXC_BAD_ACCESS because of a pointer issue? retaining issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

  • EXC_BAD_ACCESS at UITableView on IOS

    Hi all, When scrolling through table, my application crash and console said it was EXC_BAD_ACCESS. • UIWebView in multithread ViewController

    I have a UIWebView in a viewcontroller, which has two methods as below. The question is if I pop out(tap back on navigation bar) this controller before the second thread is done, the app will crash after [super dealloc], because "Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread.". Any help would be really appreciated. -(void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated { [super viewWillAppear:animated]; NSInvocationOperation *operation = [[NSInvocationOperation alloc] initWithTarget:self selector:@selector(load) object:nil]; [operationQueue addOperation:operation]; [operation release]; } -(void)load { [NSThread sleepForTimeInterval:5]; [self performSelectorOnMainThread:@selector(done) withObject:nil waitUntilDone:NO]; }

  • Getting Object allocation at UIBarButtons

  • UI View Controller crashes after interruption

    - by nosuic
    Given the multitasking of iOS I thought it wouldn't be a pain to pause and resume my app, by pressing the home button or due to a phone call, but for a particular view controller it crashes. The navigation bar is working fine i.e. when I tap "Back" it's ok, but if I try to tap controls of the displayed UI View Controller then I get EXC_BAD_ACCESS.. =/ Please find the code of my problematic View Controller below. I'm not very sure about it myself, because I used loadView to build its View, but apart from this interruption problem it works fine. • Cannot figure out how to get rid of memory leak

    - by Mark S.
    I'm trying to test for memory leaks in my iphone and I'm not having much luck getting rid of this one. Here is the code that is leaking. - (id)initWithManagedObjectContext:(NSManagedObjectContext *)aMoc delegate:(id)aDelegate runSync:(BOOL)aRunSync { if (self = [super init]) { self.moc = aMoc; self.settingsManager = [[VacaCalcSettingsManager alloc] initWithManagedObjectContext:self.moc]; self.delegate = aDelegate; calendar = [[NSCalendar alloc] initWithCalendarIdentifier:NSGregorianCalendar]; self.runSync = aRunSync; } return self; } It is leaking on the self.settingsManager = [[VacaCalcSettingsManager alloc] initWithManagedObjectContext:self.moc]; line. The self.settingManager instance variable is released in the dealloc method of the class. I'm not sure what other information would be pertinent. Please let me know and I can provide it. Thanks for any assistance. -Mark

  • If I CFRelease() an image in core data, how do I get it back?

    - by Sam
    My iphone app plays a slide show made up of 5 user images.  These images are stored using core data.  I was noticing that memory was building up every time a different slide show was played and it was not releasing any of the previously played slide shows.   These images are showing up in Object Allocations as CFData. So I tried releasing this data in the dealloc method CFRelease(slideshow.image1); CFRelease(slideshow.image2); CFRelease(slideshow.image3); CFRelease(slideshow.image4); CFRelease(slideshow.image5); This releases the previous slideshow great...BUT when I go back to view that same slideshow again, it crashes.   I am guessing that I need to alloc/init these images again, but I am not sure how?  Or maybe I should be managing this memory in a different way?

  • Retain count = 0 in other function? memory-management problem?

    - by rdesign
    Hey guys, I declared a NSMutableArray in the header-file with: NSMutableArray *myMuArr; and @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *myMuArr; In the .m file I've got a delegate from an other class: -(void)didGrabData:(NSArray*)theArray { self.myMuArr = [[[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithArray:myMuArr]retain]; } If I want to access the self.myMuArr in cellForRowAtIndexPath it's empty (I checked the retain count of the array and it's 0) What am I doing wrong? Of course it's released in the dealloc, no where else. I would be very thankfull for any help :0)

  • Checking if an object has been released before sending a message to it

    - by Tom Irving
    I've only recently noticed a crash in one of my apps when an object tried to message its delegate and the delegate had already been released. At the moment, just before calling any delegate methods, I run this check: if (delegate && [delegate respondsToSelector:...]){ [delegate ...]; } But obviously this doesn't account for if the delegate isn't nil, but has been deallocated. Besides setting the object's delegate to nil in the delegate's dealloc method, is there a way to check if the delegate has already been released just incase I no longer have a reference to the object.

  • Properly releasing UITableViewController and UITableView directly added to a UIViewController

    - by JK
    I have a UIViewController (parentVC) to which I add a UITableViewController as follows (it is not pushed since the tableview only occupies about half the screen): tableVC = [[SmallTableVC alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewStylePlain]; [self.view addSubview:tableVC.tableView]; In dealloc, I add [tableVC release]; Using instruments, I can see that the tableVC is indeed fully released when parentVC released, which is good, but I am not sure why as I thought that the UITableView of tableVC would have a retain count of 2 (1 for retention by tableVC and 1 for retention by parentVC). My intuition was that an additional [tableVC.tableView release] would be required, but adding it crashes the app. Why is tableVC released properly by the current code (if indeed it actually is)? Does a UITableViewController not retain its tableView? Thanks.

  • What are the semantics of [myThing.myProperty release]?

    - by dugla
    I clearly have not fully grocked properties. I have an instance of a class, myThing. myThing has a property that has be synthesized: // .h @property(nonatomic,retain)MyCoolType *coolType; // .m @synthesize coolType; In my program I call: // The retain count on MyCoolType is 1. [myThing.coolType release]; The reference count on MyCoolType is now zero and dealloc should fire. So, shouldn't myThing.coolType now be nil? In my code that is not the case. How do a correctly release and force the property to return nil? Thanks, Doug

  • Are @property's necessary for Interface Builder?

    - by Rits
    In my UIViewController subclass, I have 3 UIView's with each a @property as an IBOutlet. I do not use these properties at all in my code. The views get instantiated as soon as the view controller is created and they are deallocated when the view controller is deallocated. I was thinking; can't I just remove the @property's? I did, and I could still connect my instance variables (with IBOutlet) in Interface Builder. So my question now is; is there any use for properties in combination with Interface Builder, or is it OK to leave them out? Is it required for some memory management or something? Or are they really just for use in your own code? And if I do leave them out, do I still need to release them in dealloc?

  • NSXMLParser values not being retained.

    - by user574947
    This is similar to my previous question. I didn't get an answer, maybe by changing the question I might get an answer. Here is my parsing code: -(void) parser:(NSXMLParser *) parser didStartElement:(NSString *) elementName namespaceURI:(NSString *) namespaceURI qualifiedName:(NSString *) qName attributes:(NSDictionary *) attributeDict { if ([elementName isEqualToString:kimgurl] || [elementName isEqualToString:kone_x] || [elementName isEqualToString:kone_y] || [elementName isEqualToString:kone_radius] || [elementName isEqualToString:ktwo_x] || [elementName isEqualToString:ktwo_y] || [elementName isEqualToString:ktwo_radius]) { elementFound = YES; theItems = [[Items alloc] init]; } } - (void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser didEndElement:(NSString *)elementName namespaceURI:(NSString *)namespaceURI qualifiedName:(NSString *)qName { if([elementName isEqualToString:kimgurl]) { theItems.imageURL = self.currentValue; [self.currentValue setString:@""]; } else if([elementName isEqualToString:kone_x]) { theItems.iOne_X = self.currentValue; [self.currentValue setString:@""]; } else if([elementName isEqualToString:kone_y]) { theItems.iOne_Y = self.currentValue; [self.currentValue setString:@""]; } else if([elementName isEqualToString:kone_radius]) { theItems.iOne_Radius = self.currentValue; [self.currentValue setString:@""]; } else if([elementName isEqualToString:ktwo_x]) { theItems.iTwo_X = self.currentValue; [self.currentValue setString:@""]; } else if([elementName isEqualToString:ktwo_y]) { theItems.iTwo_Y = self.currentValue; [self.currentValue setString:@""]; } else if([elementName isEqualToString:ktwo_radius]) { theItems.iTwo_Radius = self.currentValue; [self.currentValue setString:@""]; } } -(void) parserDidEndDocument:(NSXMLParser *)parser { NSLog(@"enddocument: %@", theItems.imageURL); } -(void)parser:(NSXMLParser *) parser foundCharacters:(NSString *)string { if (elementFound == YES) { if(!currentValue) { currentValue = [NSMutableString string]; } [currentValue appendString: string]; } } When I get to parserDidEndDocument.   • Simple Obj-C Memory Management Question

    - by yar
    This is from some sample code from a book // On launch, create a basic window - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application { UIWindow *window = [[UIWindow alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] bounds]]; UINavigationController *nav = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:[[HelloController alloc] init]]; [window addSubview:nav.view]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; } But a release is never called for window nor for nav. Release should be called since alloc was called, right? If #1 is right, then I would need to store a reference to each of these in an instance variable in order to release them in the dealloc? Perhaps I'm wrong all around...

  • Objective C memory leaking

    - by Jakub Lédl
    Hi everyone, I'm creating one Cocoa application for myself and I found a problem. I have two NSTextFields and they're connected to each other as nextKeyViews. When I run this app with memory leaks detection tool and tab through those 2 textboxes for a while, enter some text etc., I start to leak memory. It shows me that the AppKit library is responsible, the leaked objects are NSCFStrings and the responsible frames are [NSEvent charactersIgnoringModifiers] and [NSApplication nextEventMatchingMask:untilDate:inMode:dequeue:]. I know this is quite a brief and incomplete description, but does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem? Also, I don't use GC, so I release my instance variables in the controllers dealloc. What about the outlets? Since IBOutlet is just a mark for Interface Builder and doesn't actually mean anything, should I release them too?

  • CALayer not obeying object ownership rules?

    - by eaigner
    I have a custom CALayer - UIProgressLayer - for simulating a progress bar. There is a dispatched GC timer involved to animate its intermediate state. So thats the layer I'm talking about here, although i don't think the problem is restricted to this particular subclass because a CALayer with only the -release and -dealloc overridden produces the same outcome. The problem is when i send this layer, for instance, a theLayer.opacity = 0.5f a -release message is sent to the layer, thus deallocating my layer. Why is this happening? Has it something to do with how the whole CA system works? But it still has to obey the object ownership rules right? I was thinking maybe it creates a copy of that layer for the fading, but that's not the case.

  • Release variable and assigning it again

    - by David Gonrab
    What is the preferred and/or correct way to release an NSMutableString (or any other class for that matter) instance and assign a new instance to the same variable in Objective-C on the iPhone? Currently I'm using [current release]; current = [NSMutableString new]; but I understand that the following works, too. NSMutableString *new = [NSMutableString new]; [current release]; current = [new retain]; [new release]; The variable current is declared in the interface definition of my class and gets released in dealloc.

  • How to make an mutable C array for this data type?

    - by mystify
    There's this instance variable in my objective-c class: ALuint source; I need to have an mutable array of OpenAL Sources, so in this case probably I need a mutable C-array. But how would I create one? There are many questions regarding that: 1) How to create an mutable C-array? 2) How to add something to that mutable C-array? 3) How to remove something from that mutable C-array? 4) What memory management pitfalls must I be aware of? Must i free() it in my -dealloc method? And yes, I think this is something for the nice community wiki...

  • Objective-C retain clarification

    - by Maverick
    I'm looking at this code: NSMutableArray *controllers = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; for (unsigned i = 0; i < kNumberOfPages; i++) { [controllers addObject:[NSNull null]]; } self.viewControllers = controllers; [controllers release]; Later on... - (void)dealloc { [viewControllers release]; ... } I see that self.viewControllers and controllers now point to the same allocated memory (of type NSMutableArray *), but when I call [controllers release] isn't self.viewControllers released as well, or is setting self.viewControllers = controllers automatically retains that memory?
