  • High load average, low CPU and IO (Centos 5.7)

    - by Ben
    A Drupal 7 site with CiviCRM, after running smoothly for a year on a 1&1 VPS suddenly became unresponsive. Now pages eventually load, but can take more than a minute. Looking at resource use in Virtuozzo, the load average carries a warning, and has remained above 1. While I understand this isn't particularly high, this is a change from when the site was working. Here is a typical snapshot of top: top - 03:10:32 up 3:21, 1 user, load average: 1.16, 1.22, 1.30 Tasks: 43 total, 1 running, 42 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.1%us, 0.1%sy, 0.1%ni, 99.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 2097152k total, 1015112k used, 1082040k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached CPU idle level never seems to go much below 70%. wa is virtually always at 0. There appears to be lots of free memory. And here is some vmstat output, again showign wa at 0, plenty of free memory, and an idle CPU: procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- -----cpu------ r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa st 2 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 2783 23672 0 538 1 0 99 0 0 1 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 16 0 101754 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 17 0 103133 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 102080 0 0 100 0 0 1 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 6 0 99881 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 105187 0 0 100 0 0 I've spoken to 1&1 but they don't have any ideas as to what could be causing the high load average. Instead they suggested an upgrade :) I've looked for processes that might be causing this, examined MySQL showprocesslist, and restarted the container with no result. Does anyone have more troubleshooting suggestions or insights?

  • Computer does not switch on after power outage

    - by cristian
VOLTAGE DROP OFF FOR PC does not restart The other day my pc was turned off due to power outage. Since that time the computer would not turn on again, no sign of life, it seems dead. I did several tests, changed the power outlet and disconnect the wires ... also I have reseated the cards ... but the result is that nothing changes. What can I do? Could there may be damage to the hardware due to the power outage? Note: the voltage drop is not due to a lightning storm and so is not due to damaged components (burnt card etc ...) Grazie mille

  • load average in top and procs in vmstat

    As far as I know, the load average in top is the numbers of precess(threads) in running or uninterrupted sleep status, So it should be equal to (procs-r +1 )+ procs-b in vmstat, but in practice, this two number always have big gap. Any wrongs in my understanding, appreciate so much if some guys give me some guide. top - 05:34:50 up 1 day, 20:56, 5 users, load average: 2.83, 2.67, 1.62 Tasks: 79 total, 1 running, 78 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 6.8%us, 1.8%sy, 0.0%ni, 91.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.4%st Mem: 1758000k total, 582636k used, 1175364k free, 103932k buffers Swap: 917500k total, 0k used, 917500k free, 180868k cached procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- -----cpu----- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa st 0 0 0 1182524 103784 180860 0 0 1 9 6 53 7 2 91 0 0 0 0 0 1182524 103784 180860 0 0 0 36 70 117 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182516 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 73 132 0 1 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182516 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 60 127 0 0 100 0 0 1 0 0 1182516 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 62 102 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182628 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 289 238 1 2 97 0 0 2 0 0 1152160 103784 180892 0 0 0 8 1481 2371 54 12 34 0 0 1 0 0 1182192 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 681 834 19 4 78 0 0 0 0 0 1182200 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 80 147 0 1 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182200 103784 180860 0 0 0 0 53 107 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1182208 103788 180856 0 0 0 72 64 123 0 0 100 1 0

  • No clue for high load average on top

    - by Oz.
We have several machines on Amazon (ec2) of the type c1.xlarge with 16 cpus, running the Amazon AMI. Details on the machine: 7 GB of memory 20 EC2 Compute Units (8 virtual cores with 2.5 EC2 Compute Units each) 1690 GB of instance storage 64-bit platform I/O Performance: High API name: c1.xlarge One out of the several machines is showing a high load average, since we have run the last yum upgrade a couple of weeks a go. We did not yet update the other machines, and everything looks normal on them. The strange thing is that the top command not showing any hint for the cause of the load. CPUs are 4.8%us, 1.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 94.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st(see below). Mem is about 1.5GB free. Any idea what could it be, or where else can we check? • MySQL query, 2 similar servers, 2 minute difference in execution times

    - by mr12086
I had a similar question on stack overflow, but it seems to be more server/mysql setup related than coding. The queries below all execute instantly on our development server where as they can take upto 2 minutes 20 seconds. The query execution time seems to be affected by home ambiguous the LIKE string's are. If they closely match a country that has few matches it will take less time, and if you use something like 'ge' for germany - it will take longer to execute. But this doesn't always work out like that, at times its quite erratic. Sending data appears to be the culprit but why and what does that mean. Also memory on production looks to be quite low (free memory)? • PCI configuration method error (Linux Kernel)

    - by user326580
(I'm not sure if here is the best place for that question, so I will be pleased if anyone suggests me a more proper forum for that.) I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.4 in a netbook (from an usb), but the kernel stops very early in initialization process. After two days of research, I've found that it boots with the parameter pci=conf2 but not with the default conf1 method. Nevertheless, after kernel boot, it seems that Ubuntu can't find usb devices and I'm not be able to install it. Trying with Debian, its a graphic installer and I found that the mouse isn't working neither.I think pci devices are not working. I tried about 50% of kernel pci boot options in the kernel-parameters file (in conjunction with the implicit default conf1) without luck. Any suggestions? PS: The problem is the same with kernel 2.6 or 3.

  • How to find out which process is hogging the linux server?

    - by user1149518
We have a RHEL server. Today it suddenly became slow. Symptoms - It was responding slow to ping queries from other server. When I try to login using ssh, it was taking about 10 seconds to login. I was able to resolve the problem by doing some guess work. I killed one process which I thought was culprit. Which resolved the problem. Though I would like to know what's proper approach to detect the culprit in such kind of "slow server" situations. Le me know proper way to resolving such slowness issues and decting the process causing the slowness.
