  • FFMPEG Segfault Solutions

    I'm trying to convert a bunch of movies into h.264 mp4's using FFMPEG. These movies are sourced from various portable camcorders such as the Flip Mino HD and the Kodak ZI8. One issue I'm having with video from the ZI8 is it seems to be causing FFMPEG to segfault.   • Feedback on available mid-to-enterprise level desktop backup solutions [closed]

    I am involved in the creation of a new backup solution to replace our current Retrospect setup, which has become a significant time sink to administer. We have almost 200 desktop and some laptop clients, both Windows and OS X. We're only interested in products oriented around disk-to-disk, and would be integrate well with our current set of nine NAS devices as target storage. I'd just like some feedback from anyone out there, as it's sometimes difficult otherwise to find objective reviews of software at this level. Both data and time are important enough that we need a reliable solution which won't be prone to self-destruction as often as Retrospect. Bonus points for de-duplication, which might help squeeze more service time out of our NAS setup in terms of capacity. Currently considering Commvault and Netbackup. Many other products I've seen don't have an OSX client. Any thoughts?

I know it is possible to perform such a migration using the SDKs from both services, but is there a free, standard, 1-step process for doing this?     We are getting ready to make a major revision in our Web Application architecture which currently is running on JBoss 4.2. At first we were looking at moving from 4.2 to JBoss 6 but after some research tomcat may be a better solution for us. My first question is their anything that JBoss can do that tomcat cannot do assuming you are using the correct plugins. We do not really use EJB's in our solution and it would appear there are simple plugins for web services, JMX and other features. Tomcat appears to have much better support, faster upgrade cycles and many, many books. Since there is less to the system it also seems much easier to support from an admin point of view. What am I missing? The main features we want to enable are better clustering support and session replication / persistence.   • Subdomains, folders, internationalization, and hosting solutions

    I'm a web developer and I recently landed a gig to develop the US / international version of a site for a company that's big in Europe but hasn't done much expansion into the US yet. They've got an existing site at company.com, which should remain visible to European customers after the new site goes up, and an existing (not great) site at company.us, which I'm going to be redeveloping (the .us site will be taken down when my version goes up--keep reading for details). My solution needs to take into account the fact that there are going to be new, localized versions of the site in the fairly near future, so the framework I'm writing needs to be able to handle localizations fairly easily (dynamically load language packs, etc). The tricky thing is the European branch of the company manages the .com site hosting (IIS-based) and the DNS, while I'll be managing the US hosting (and future localizations), which will likely be apache-based. I've never been a big fan of the ".us" TLD--I think most US users are accustomed to visiting the .com--so the thought is that the European branch will detect the IP of inbound traffic and redirect all US-based addresses to us.example.com (or whatever the appropriate localized subdomain might be), which would point to the IP address of my host. I'd then serve the appropriate locale-specific content by pulling the subdomain from the $_SERVER superglobal (assuming PHP). I couldn't find any examples of international organizations that take a subdomain-based approach for localization, but I'm not sure I have any other options as a result of the unique hosting structure here (in that there's not a unified hosting solution for the European and US sites). In my experience, the US version of an international site would live at domain.com/us, not at us.domain.com, and I'd imagine that this has to do with SEO (subdomains are treated as separate sites, so improved rankings for the US site wouldn't help the Canadian version if subdomains are used to differentiate between them). My question is: is there a better approach to solving this problem than the one I'm taking? Ideally, I'd like to use a folder-based approach (see adidas.com as an example of what I'm talking about), but I'm not sure that's a possibility given that the US site (and other localizations) will not be hosted on the same server as the rest of the .com. Can you, in IIS, map a folder (e.g. domain.com/us) to a different IP address? What would you recommend? Thanks for your consideration.

  • Making audio CDs en mass - Linux based solutions?

    My mom's sings and gives away cds to people. Invariably it falls to me to have to burn cds for her, and burning 50-100 cds on a single drive is a pain. I DO have a handful of cd burners and a slightly geriatric old PIII 450. This is what i want to be able to do - either point an application at a folder of WAV or MP3s, say how many copies i need on CLI (since then i can SSH into the system and use it headless) feed 2 or more CD burners cds until its done, OR pop in a single CD into a master drive and have its contents duplicated to 2 or more burners. I'd rather have it running on linux, be command line based, and be as little work as possible - almost automatic short of telling it how many copies i want would be ideal. I'm sure i'll have people wondering about legality - My mom sings her own music, and its classical, and older than copyright law, so, that's a non issue. I just want a way to make this chore a little easier, short of telling my mom to do it herself.

    Im looking for some advice on a system Im looking to impliment within our company, but so far I have not found an adequate solution too. I need to provide my users with a way to backup there laptops whilst in the office and if possible offsite as well, we have a mixture of Windows & Mac laptops so software should ideally be multi platform. This is the first time i am attempting to-do something like this as we normally charge the users with responsibility for their backups. I have ruled out most of the services like dropbox, sugarsync (unless one exists that does this) as whilst they does exactly what I want it does not give me any control over restoring / recovering data in the event of the user being unavailable, as it requires their account password to access data.

    Actually the tag and category system in WordPress and EverNote are very similar, almost exactly the same. We can create a notebook/notebook group in EverNote, its counterpart in Wordpress is Category/Sub Category We can mutiple tag any note in EverNote, similarly we can tag any post in Wordpress as well! Since the two are so similar to each other in categorizing the article, I am wondering whether there is a existing solution to automatically convert between the two. Like one click to post my EverNote note to WordPress under the same category and same tag. Or pull down my WordPress article to my EverNote account under the same category and same tag. Preferably it can also handle image\video uploading issues as well. :) I saw a similar questions asked years ago: Posting from evernote to wordpress So I was wondering is there any new update for this idea right now?

    I have a growing number of PCs and laptops in my home that need a backup solution. My question is 2 fold: Most commercial backup vendors appear to license by the machine, are there any products that give a license that can be used on all your machines, without a per machine cost? An alternative is to have a centrally controlled back up strategy controlled from a single PC with an attached hard drive that can back up other machines on the network. What backup software is suitable for this approach? Will this software be windows/Linux interoperable? I've searched for duplicate questions but don't see anything that addresses the multi machine/cost issue. OSs in network will be Windows (XP, Vista, 7) and Linux variants. Not pattern to when machines will be switched on.

  • Possible Hack with FTP - What are the solutions?

    I was reading the FTP rfc and hence had this idea. Suppose there are several public ftp servers that allow anonymous user login. I open a control connection on port 21 to each of these servers. Now suppose there is a web server a.com with ip address x.y.z.w listening on port 80. FTP allows a user to specify the host on which the data connection is to be setup. So a user specifies the host and port number of a.com web server. Now the ftp server starts sending data to a.com for which it is not a valid HTTP request and hence it is rejected. But a.com notes that the invalid http request came from a public ftp server and not my ip address. Can this not lead to a distributed attack by utilizing all public ftp servers. worse still the the data being sent by ftp server could be a valid http request which could trigger a.com to send a file back to the ftp server. Is there a solution for this or is it no problem at all.

    I have stumbled upon Riverbed.com's products which basically has the capability to hash chunks of IP data and subsequently store them to disk. I'm looking for an open source / cheaper alternative. WANProxy is the exact equivalent except that it only keeps data in-memory and can't store the data to disk which is a requirement for our solution. I'm basically looking for a proxy which not only looks at the files (filenames) but the data itself being transmitted at the packet level. Anyone? Thanks!

    I would like to schedule a batch job in which a can execute a move of data between two workspace application in Hyperion Fusion Edition for Oracle. The tool provided is called 'Data Synchronization' This tool allows for this type if activity to occur upon request via the workspace environment. How might I do this automatically? I noticed there is a Batch Scheduler for which I can request command line batch file to run at a pre-specified time. However, I do not know what resources are available to show me how to do this for the Data-Synchronizations.

  • Project Reference added to one of the projects in the same solution appears broken in another solution

    I have couple of solutions. In the first solution I have many projects. One of the project named 'A' has a project reference of another project 'B' of the same solution. In second solution, the project 'A' is added but not the project 'B'. Both the solutions build successfully. However, in second solution, reference of B added in the project A, appears broken. Why? Now, in first solution, instead of adding Project reference of B into A, i simply add a 'file reference' of B's DLL (which is copied at the common output directory created for all the projects) into A. Now the reference appears broken in both the solution even though both the solutions are built successfully. May I know what should I do when I have such a scenario?

    This is building upon an earlier question Awk conditional filter one file based on another (or other solutions) I have an awk program that outputs a column from rows in a text file 'refGene.txt if values in that row match 2 out of 3 values in another text file. I need to include an additional criteria for finding a match between the two files. The criteria is inclusion if the range of the 2 numberical values specified in each row in file 1 overlap with the range of the two values in a row in refGene.txt. An example of a line in File 1: chr1 10 20 chr2 10 20 and an example line in file 2(refGene.txt) of the matching columns ($3, $5, $ 6): chr1 5 30 Currently the awk program does not treat this as a match because although the first column matches neither the 2nd or 3rd columns do no. But I would like a way to treat this as a match because the region 10-20 in file 1 is WITHIN the range of 5-30 in refGene.txt. However the second line in file 1 should NOT match because the first column does not match, which is necessary. If there is a way to include cases when any of the range in file 1 overlaps with any of the range in refGene.txt that would be really helpful. It should also replace the below conditional statements as it would also find all the cases currently described below. Please let me know if my question is unclear.   • API-based solutions for sending payments to people without bank accounts

    I'm looking for inexpensive ways to send payments to hundreds or thousands of individual contractors, even if they do not have a bank account. Currently I only need to support payment in the USA, but may eventually be international. Here's the scenario: I offer a service that allows an organization or manager-type person to coordinate contractors for very short term jobs. These jobs are typically only an hour or two in length. A contractor may get only one job over an entire month, several jobs spread out over a month, multiple jobs on a single day, or any other combination. Thus, a single contractor could earn as little as one job's payment up to potentially payment for dozens. Payment for a month could be as little as $10 up to $1000's. Right now, the system provides payroll reports to the manager and it is the manager's responsibility to produce checks, stuff envelopes, and send mail via the US postal service. I'd like to remove this burden from the manager and have all the payments taken care of for them automatically by the system. I'm not sure where to start or what the best options would be. I'm starting to look into the following solutions, but don't know specifics yet and would like some advice before pursuing them. I'd also like to hear about other ideas or suggestions. PayPal (Send Money, Adaptive Payments, x.com, other???) Amazon (Flexible Payments System?) Fund some sort of pre-paid debit card? Web service with API that mails checks for you? Direct deposit via a bank API (for users with bank accounts)? The problem is that many of these contractors may not be able to obtain bank accounts or credit cards within the USA. I don't mind doing a hybrid of solutions, but are there any that would work well with this issue? I want the solution to be easy to use for the contractors, meaning that they can get the money easily (via check in the mail, debit card ATM withdrawal, etc.)

Decimals may be used, as in .1, .02, etc. Digits may be combined; numbers such as 20 or 101 may be used. Example: 60 = 10*(2+1)!, 54 = ¹¹C2 - 0! Though I was able to quickly find around 50 solutions quite easily in my head, I thought programming it would be a far superior solution. However, I then realized I had no clue how to go about solving a problem like this. I am not asking for complete code for me to copy and paste, but for ideas about how I would solve this problems, and others like it that have nearly infinite potential solutions. As I will be writing it in python, where I have the most experience, I would prefer if the answers were more python based, but general ideas are great too.

  • What is the easiest way to apply database functionality into my daily life?

    let me try to explain it by listing some of the things I want to do: Submit random thoughts, notes, facts, and to-do tasks of any sort and at any time. Tag each of these submissions freely. Manage these tags centrally. Associate meta-data with submissions and tags. Search, filter, and sort submissions. I want lots of power here. Display views of submissions (including within searches) in a hierarchy. Create said hierarchies easily out by ordering relevant tags. I'm thinking towards some kind of desktop program that allows me to quickly do all of these things. A web service could also work, too, but it will need offline capabilities. I don't want to have to pay for this, if that's possible. Also, as I know regex and SQL, I wouldn't mind solutions involving the use of either.
