  • Am I going about this the right way?

    Hey Guys, I'm starting a WPF project, and just finished the base of the UI, it seems very convoluted though, so I'm not sure if I've gone around laying it out in the right way. I don't want to get to start developing the back-end and realise that I've done the front wrong, and make life harder for myself. Coming from a background of <DIV's and CSS to style this is a lot different, and really want to get it right from the start. Essentially it's a one week calendar (7 days, Mon-Sunday, defaulting to the current week.) Which will eventually link up to a DB and if I have an appointment for something on this day it will show it in the relevant day. I've opted for a Grid rather than ListView because of the way it will work I will not be binding the results to a collection or anything along those lines. Rather I will be filling out a Combo box within the canvas for each day (yet to be placed in the code) for each event and on selection it will show me further details.   • When am I ready for contracting work?

    What skills are required to work on a temp / contracting basis, and how does a developer know when they are ready to work in these circumstances? I have some colleagues who are suggesting contracting work is 'the way to go'; the pay is significantly better. It appears that when a permanent position pays (X times $10k) per year, the corresponding contract position pays almost $X per hour - which is close to twice as much. I look forward to doing this type of work as an experienced expert, but worry that by doing so right now I'd be turning away learning and development opportunities. My assumptions about contract work are the following: less / zero money invested on training and development less concern for job satisfaction and learning ("they won't be here in 12 months") possibly less concern about the overall quality of the project ("we won't be here in 12 months") There are similar questions on stack overflow at the moment but what I've really looking for is: What does the developer give up by moving to contract work? Is it preferable to have structured learning in a permanent position rather than seat-of-the-pants learning in a contract position? What skill leve should the contractor have before making the move? Is there still the same kind of growth in contracting that there is in permanent positions? Rightly or wrongly, I see this as a choice between $ (contracting) and learning / development (permanent). Is this fair?

    Hi Everyone, I'm using AMCharts and rails. AMCharts uses the Image Magic lib to export an image of the chart. In rails this is done with the gem, RMagic.   • log4net: what am I doing wrong?

    Being a log4net newb / boob I just copied lines from an NHibernate example project where I can see the log.txt file is updated. Is there a quick answer why mine isn't creating the file? Cheers, Berryl [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(Watch = true)] I saw another post here saying this should go in AssemblyInfo, but in the example project this is just another line in a static helper class.   • SCORM 2004 Sequencing: What Am I doing wrong?

    This quiz is the last SCO in a grouping of 4 SCOs. SCO 1,2,3 have to be completed before this quiz becomes available. The problem is that when 1,2,3 are completed the menu skips right over this quiz and goes to the first page in the next module. This quiz stats grayed out the entire time.   • I am having trouble using FileReader to write a txt file to an array (Java), what am I doing wrong?

    Scanner s = null; try { s = new Scanner(new BufferedReader(new FileReader("rates.txt"))); for (int i=0; i<9; i++){ while(s.hasNext()){rates[i] = s.next();} System.out.println(rates[i]); } }catch (IOException e){ System.out.println(e); } finally { if (s != null) { s.close(); } } When I run this code, it reads the last chunk of characters in my txt file, places them in rates[0], sticks null in 1-8, then puts that same last chunk in rates[9]. I'm not sure why it's reading the end of my file first. The contents of the txt are below.. USD 1.34 EUR 1.00 JPY 126.28 GBP 0.88 INR 60.20 It reads the 60.20, which is all it is recording in the array. Any help would be appreciated.

    I wanted to learn how to create python packages, so I visited http://docs.python.org/distutils/index.html. For this exercise I'm using Python 2.6.2 on Windows XP. I followed along with the simple example and created a small test project: person/ setup.py person/ __init__.py person.py My person.py file is simple: class Person(object): def __init__(self, name="", age=0): self.name = name self.age = age def sound_off(self): print "%s %d" % (self.name, self.age) And my setup.py file is: from distutils.core import setup setup(name='person', version='0.1', packages=['person'], ) I ran python setup.py sdist and it created MANIFEST, dist/ and build/. Next I ran python setup.py install and it installed it to my site packages directory. I run the python console and can import the person module, but I cannot import the Person class. >>>import person >>>from person import Person Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: cannot import name Person I checked the files added to site-packages and checked the sys.path in the console, they seem ok. Why can't I import the Person class. Where did I go wrong?

  • I am getting an error when trying to use melt() on a dataframe containing Dates

    I'd like to melt the dataframe so that in one column i have dates in a second i have username as the variable and finally the value. I'm getting this error: Error in as.Date.numeric(value) : 'origin' must be supplied and while I understand the error I'm not exactly sure how to get around it.   • Why am I seeing a crash when trying to call CDHtmlDialog::OnInitDialog()

    I added a helpAbout menu item to my mfc app. I decided to make the ddlg derive from CDHTMLDialog. I override the OnInitDialog() method in my derived class and the first thing I do is call the parent's OnInitDialog() method. I then put in code that sets the title. On some machines this works fine, but on others it crashes in the call to CDHtmlDialog::OnInitDialog() - Trying to read a null pointer. the call stack has nothing useful - it is in mfc90.dll Is this a potential problem with mismatches of mfc/win32 dlls? It works on my vista machines but crashes on a win2003 server box.     I'm getting the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." when trying to reference a HiddenField (lvEditProjectSteps_hdnStepStatusId for future reference) from the EditItem during the OnItemUpdating event after the Update event fires in a ListView. This only occurs on the FIRST item in the ListView. I checked the source and the HTML is being rendered properly. ANY insight is appreciated! Thanks in advance...   • Am I Writing Assembly Or NASM?

    I'm fed up with this. I've been trying to just get a grip on assembly for awhile, but I feel like I'm coding towards my compiler rather than a language. I've been using this tutorial, and so far it's giving me hell. I'm using NASM, which may be the problem, but I figured it was the most popular one. I'm simply trying to learn the most general form of assembly, so I decided to learn x86. I keep running into stupid errors, like not being able to increment a variable.     I see a description of what UITableViewCellSeparatorStyleSingleLineEtched looks like in Apple's Class Reference, and can see it by running the application. But I can't find any mention of when it's appropriate to use UITableViewCellSeparatorStyleSingleLineEtched instead of UITableViewCellSeparatorStyleSingleLine. In other words, what does this etched line mean to the user? Can anyone explain?
