  • iPython in Emacs. Quick code evaluation

    Hi all, I would like to "send" code snippets to a iPython interpreter in Emacs 23.2 (Linux). I have two related questions about this: Q1: I have learned that Emacs provides ('shell-command-on-region') to run selected regions in a shell. I have set setq shell-file-name to my iPython path, but when I run M-| after selecting a region, Emacs prompts me the following: Shell command on region: and if I then type RET, I get the iPython man page on the *Shell Command Output* buffer, without the region being executed. Why? Q2: Assuming that I have already started an iPython shell in some other buffer in Emacs, is there a way of selecting a region in another buffer and "sending" this region to the already-started iPython shell?   • Dynamic evaluation of a table column within an insert before trigger

    HI All, I have 3 tables, main, types and linked. main has an id column and 32 type columns. types has id, type linked has id, main_id, type_id I want to create an insert before trigger on the main table. It needs to compare its 32 type columns to the values in the types table if the main table column has an 'X' for its value and insert the main_id and types_id into the linked table. i have done a lot of searching, and it looks like a prepared statement would be the way to go, but i wanted to ask the experts. The issue, is i dont want to write 32 IF statements, and even if i did, i need to query the types table to get the ID for that type, seems like a huge waist of resources. Ideally i want to do this inside of my trigger: BEGIN DECLARE @types results_set -- (not sure if this is a valid type); -- (iam sure my loop syntax is all wrong here)... SET @types = (select * from types) for i=0;i<types.records;i++ { IF NEW.[i.type] = 'X' THEN insert into linked (main_id,type_id) values (new.ID, i.id); END IF; } END; Anyway, This is what i was hoping to do, maybe there is a way to dynamically set the field name inside of a results loop, but i cant find a good example of this.   • Ambiguous Evaluation of Lambda Expression on Array

    I would like to use a lambda that adds one to x if x is equal to zero. I have tried the following expressions: t = map(lambda x: x+1 if x==0 else x, numpy.array) t = map(lambda x: x==0 and x+1 or x, numpy.array) t = numpy.apply_along_axis(lambda x: x+1 if x==0 else x, 0, numpy.array) Each of these expressions returns the following error: ValueError: The truth value of an array with more than one element is ambiguous. Use a.any() or a.all() My understanding of map() and numpy.apply_along_axis() was that it would take some function and apply it to each value of an array. From the error it seems that the the lambda is being evaluated as x=array, not some value in array. What am I doing wrong? I know that I could write a function to accomplish this but I want to become more familiar with the functional programming aspects of python.

    I want to understand how hibernate execute hql query internally or in other models how hql query engine works. Please suggest some good links for same? One of reason for reading is following problem. Class Branch { //lazy loaded @joincolumn(name="company_id") Company company; } Since company is heavy object so it is lazy loaded. now i have hql query "from Branch as branch where branch.Company.id=:companyId" my concern is that if for firing above query, hql engine has to retrieve company object then its a performance hit and i would prefer to add one more property in Branch class i.e. companyId. So in this case hql query would be "from Branch as branch where branch.companyId=:companyId" If hql engine first generate sql from hql followed by firing of sql query itself, then there should be no performance issue. Please let me know if problem is not understandable.

    What is the most efficient way to collect and report performance statistic analysis from an application? If I have an application that uses a series of network apis, and I want to report statistics at runtime, e.g. Method doA() was called 3 times and consumed on avg 500ms Method doB() was called 5 times and consumed on avg 1200ms etc Then, I thought of using a well defined data structure (of collection) that each thread updates per remote call, and this can be used for the report. But I think that it will make the performance worse, for the time spend for statistics collection. Am I correct? How would I procceed if I used a background thread for this, and the other threads that did the remote calls were unaware of this collection gathering? Thanks

    I'm trying to compare two booleans : (if (equal? #f (string->number "123b")) "not a number" "indeed a number") When I run this in the command line of DrRacket I get "not a number" , however , when I put that piece of code in my larger code , the function doesn't return that string ("not a number") , here's the code : (define (testing x y z) (define badInput "ERROR") (if (equal? #f (string->number "123b")) "not a number" "indeed a number") (display x)) And from command line : (testing "123" 1 2) displays : 123 Why ? Furthermore , how can I return a value , whenever I choose ?   • Basic Python While loop compound conditional evaluation

    In Python IDLE Shell it seems I cannot use a compound conditional expression and a while loop. I tried it within brackets too. k=0 m=0 while k<10 & m<10: print k k +=1 m+=1 If I write while k<10: print k k+=1 This does work. Is there a way I could achieve the first block of code with the "and" operator. I have done it in Java. Do I just need to put together "if" statements to achieve the same functionality in Python?

  • How to enforce lazy loading of entities on certain conditions

    We have an JPA @Entity class (say User) which has a @ManyToOne reference (say Address) loaded using the EAGER option which in turn loads it's own @ManyToOne fields (say Country) in a EAGER fashion. We use the EntityQuery interface to count the list of User's based on a search criteria, during such a load all the @ManyToOne fields which have been marked as EAGER get loaded. But in order to perform a EntityQuery.resultCount(), I actually don't need to load the @ManyToOne fields. Is there a way to prevent loading of the EAGER fields in such cases so that we can avoid the unnecessary joins?

  • MSSQL 2008 - Bit Param Evaluation alters Execution Plan

    I have been working on migrating some of our data from Microsoft SQL Server 2000 to 2008. Among the usual hiccups and whatnot, I’ve run across something strange. Linked below is a SQL query that returns very quickly under 2000, but takes 20 minutes under 2008. I have read quite a bit on upgrading SQL server and went down the usual paths of checking indexes, statistics, etc. before coming to the conclusion that the following statement, found in the WHERE clause, causes the execution plan for the steps that follow this statement to change dramatically: And ( @bOnlyUnmatched = 0 -- offending line Or Not Exists( The SQL statements and execution plans are linked below. A coworker was able to rewrite a portion of the WHERE clause using a CASE statement, which seems to “trick” the optimizer into using a better execution plan. The version with the CASE statement is also contained in the linked archive. I’d like to see if someone has an explanation as to why this is happening and if there may be a more elegant solution than using a CASE statement. While we can work around this specific issue, I’d like to have a broader understanding of what is happening to ensure the rest of the migration is as painless as possible.   • UITableView animations for a "lazy" UI design?

    I have a UITableViewController that allows the user to perform editing tasks. Now, once a user has committed his change, the table view doesn't directly change the model and updates the table, rather "informs" the model what the user wants to do. The model in turn updates accordingly and then posts a notification that it has been changed. As far as I've seen, I need to begin/end updates on the tableview and in between change the model to its' final form. My changes though, are asynchronous and cannot guarantee to update the model before 'tableview endupdates' is called. Currently, each time I receive a 'model did change' notificaiton, I reload the entire table. So, how can I really make cell animations (delete/insert) work? Should the model fire a notification for each little change instead of the entire table?

    For example, I've got a root object exposed in a SOA service, say Invoice (Invoice has line items as children). Sometimes, I need to retrieve its detail line items. I'm thinking to make it lazy loading, because it's a traffic overhead to transfer line items every time Invoice is required. But in SOA fashion, it seems unlikely. Because all it can expose are Invoice POCOs, with contain no logic. Thus I cannot attach my lazy loading logic to Invoice to instruct it to load lines items when needed.

    I'm building a 4 layered ASP.Net web application. The layers are: Data Layer Entity Layer Business Layer UI Layer The entity layer has my data model classes and is built from my entity data model (edmx file) in the datalayer using T4 templates (POCO). The entity layer is referenced in all other layers. My data layer has a class called SourceKeyRepository which has a function like so: public IEnumerable<SourceKey> Get(SourceKey sk) { using (dmc = new DataModelContainer()) { var query = from SourceKey in dmc.SourceKeys select SourceKey; if (sk.sourceKey1 != null) { query = from SourceKey in query where SourceKey.sourceKey1 == sk.sourceKey1 select SourceKey; } return query; } } Lazy loading is disabled since I do not want my queries to run in other layers of this application. I'm receiving the following error when attempting to access the information in the UI layer: The ObjectContext instance has been disposed and can no longer be used for operations that require a connection. I'm sure this is because my DataModelContainer "dmc" was disposed. How can I return this IEnumerable object from my data layer so that it does not rely on the ObjectContext, but solely on the DataModel? Is there a way to limit lazy loading to only occur in the data layer?

  • How to get around LazyInitializationException in scheduled jobs?

    I am working on a J2EE server application which is deployed on Tomcat. I use Spring source as MVC framework and Hibernate as ORM provider. My object model has lot of Lazy relationships (dependent objects are fetched on request). The high level design is like Service level methods call a few DAO methods to perform database operation. The service method is called either from the Flex UI or as a scheduled job. When it is called from Flex UI, the service method works fine i.e. it fetches some objects using DAO methods and even Lazy loading works. This is possible by the use of OpenSessionInViewFilter configured with the UI servlet. But when the same service method is called as scheduled Job, it gives LazyInitializationException. I can not configure OpenSessionInViewFilter because there is no servlet or UI request associated with that. I tried configuring Transaction around the scheduled job method so that service method starts a transaction and all the DAO methods participate in that same transaction, hoping that the transaction will remain active and hibernate session will be available. But it does not work. Please suggest if anyone has ever been able to get such a configuration working. If needed, I can post the Hibernate configuration and log messages. Thanks a lot for help!   • Keeping Linq to SQL alive when using ViewModels (ASP.NET MVC)

    I have recently started using custom ViewModels (For example, CustomerViewModel) public class CustomerViewModel { public IList<Customer> Customers{ get; set; } public int ProductId{ get; set; } public CustomerViewModel(IList<Customer> customers, int productId) { this.Customers= customers; this.ProductId= productId; } public CustomerViewModel() { } } ... and am now passing them to my view instead of the Entities themselves (for example, var Custs = repository.getAllCusts(id) ) as it seems good practice to do so. The problem i have encountered is that when using ViewModels; by the time it has got to the the view i have lost the ability to lazy load on customers. I do not believe this was the case before using them. Is it possible to retain the ability of Lazy Loading while still using ViewModels? Or do i have to eager load using this method? Thanks, Kohan.
