  • Paragraph with normal opacity within greyed-out div

    - by dmr
    I am greying out a web page when a user doesn't have permission to access it. In order to do that, I am placing a div with background-color white and a lowered opacity on top of the web page. I want to write some words in that div with the words having a normal opacity. As of now, the greyed out background is showing correctly. However, I can't seem to get the words to be a regular opacity. The derived styles on Firebug show the opacity on the words as normal, but it clearly isn't. What am I doing wrong? The HTML: <div class="noPermission"> <p>I'm sorry. You do not have permission to access this page.</p> </div> The CSS: div.noPermission { background-color: white; filter:alpha(opacity=50); /* IE */ opacity: 0.5; /* Safari, Opera */ -moz-opacity:0.50; /* FireFox */ z-index: 20; height: 100%; width: 100%; background-repeat:no-repeat; background-position:center; position:absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; } div.noPermission p{ color: black; margin: 300px auto auto 50px; text-align: left; font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px; display: block; width: 250px; }

  • Need an Overview of Possibilities for multicolumn programming

    - by Sam
    Hi folks, From source1 and source2 i gather that IE9 will NOT support multi-column css3!! Since it is still the most popular browser (another thing i cannot understand), i am left but no other choice than to use Programming Power to make multi-columns work. Now, I use three divs that float to left, and which are manually filled with text. Please don't laugh i know its stupid! But I would wish to not to have to worry about the columns and just have a one piece of (un-interrupted) text which all goes into only 1 div, and then have a program smart enough to split it up into X equally wide columns. Question: before i start reinvent the wheel, what methods of programming power have you known that tackle this elegantly? Please suggest your best working multi-column layout sources so I can evaluate which option is the best (I will update the below table). • Wrapping text and div as a unit

    - by mathee
    I have the following that I would like wrapped as units. <div class='tag-box'> <a href=#>Axe Committee</a> <div class='circle'><a href=#>x</a></div> </div> The CSS for these classes are: .tag-box { display:inline; } .circle { display:inline; padding-left:4px; padding-right:4px; background:rgb(196,15,24); /*dark red*/ -moz-border-radius:10px; -webkit-border-radius:10px; } .circle a { font-size:10px; text-decoration:none; color:#fff; position:relative; top:-2px; } I can have upwards of 20 or 30 of these tag-boxes displayed inline. The problem is that the wrapping will break the words from each other or even break the red circle from the link. This makes it hard to differentiate which circle belongs to which link. (In the future, each circle corresponds to a different action with respect to the link.) See below. How do I prevent this kind of wrapping from occurring?

  • Make an empty DIV height and width of its container

    - by Olly F
    My HTML currently contains a background image that stretches with the viewport. Within that, I plan to place a div that stretches to the height and width of the viewport and has black background colour at 50% opacity. I've set the div to be 100% width and height. The div is not stretching and I can't figure out why! HTML: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html lang="en"> <head> <title>Tester</title> <meta charset="UTF-8"/> <style type="text/css"> html { background: url(http://cjpstudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/cityrock1.jpg) no-repeat center center fixed; -webkit-background-size: cover; -moz-background-size: cover; -o-background-size: cover; background-size: cover; } #background-color { width: 100%; height: 100%; background-color: #000000; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="background-color"> </div> </body>

  • Firefox proxy dilemma

    - by Mike L.
    Any idea why when using system proxy settings in firefox, it can not accept a proxy such as: user:[email protected]:port ??? IE will allow and connect to a proxy in this format. Not only does firefox not work, but it does not prompt for the password, nor attempt to make a connection to the proxy. Basically get a "proxy server not found" error. Anybody know a way around this? I am working on a proxy switching program for IE & Firefox, and I would like to use system-wide proxy settings. If I just store the server:port combination, firefox prompts for the password, as well as IE. Then they can be cached and it will not ask again. Maybe my only option is to programmatically cache the user/pass? Anybody know a way to do this? I am pretty sure IE stores them at HTTP basic authentication passwords and I can add them with AddCredential. After saving a password for a proxy in firefox, it shows up in saved passwords in a format like "moz-proxy://server:port" anybody know how to programmatically add a saved password to firefox? Thanks

  • CSS "Cover" - No scroll bars?

    - by Lynda
    I am using the cover property to create a background image that fills the background and resizes with the browser. But I run into one issue, the page has a lot of content and no scroll bars appear for me to scroll down! Here is the code I am using: body{ background: url(path.jpg) no-repeat center center fixed; -webkit-background-size: cover; -moz-background-size: cover; -o-background-size: cover; /* Cover for IE 7/8 */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(src='path.jpg', sizingMethod='scale'); -ms-filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(src='path.jpg', sizingMethod='scale'); /* End Cover for IE 7/8 */ background-size: cover; background-color: transparent !important; position:fixed; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height:100%; max-width:2500px; max-height:1500px; z-index:1; } If I remove position:fixed; I get the scroll bars back but the background image disappears. What is the best way to tackle this and have both scroll bars and the background cover image? Note: I am using jQuery and would use a JS answer if it works (though I prefer a CSS only answer.)

  • My fade in goes to all opaque for it goes to transparent

    - by DerNalia
    So, I'm trying to fade in a transparent div, kinda like hulu does when you click dim lights... here is what i have: //show the bg new Effect.Appear('darkBackgroundLayer', {duration: 0.3}); then when my pop up is initialized // create the div for background dimming if($('darkBackgroundLayer')){ Element.remove('darkBackgroundLayer') } var transparentBG = document.createElement('div'); transparentBG.className = 'darkenBackground'; transparentBG.id = "darkBackgroundLayer" transparentBG.style.display = "none"; document.body.appendChild(transparentBG); and the CSS for the new div .darkenBackground { background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); opacity: 0.7; /* Safari, Opera */ -moz-opacity:0.70; /* FireFox */ filter: alpha(opacity=70); /* IE */ z-index: 20; height: 100%; width: 100%; background-repeat:repeat; position:fixed; top: 0px; left: 0px; } but, currently, it fades in... all the way to a solid back, then jumps to the .7 opacity... ideas?

  • Why does my floating div push around other divs?

    - by Meke
    I have a div which has a table which has a google map. I want to place a info box within the google map external to the map, just floating on top But I can't seem to get it right, the info div just pushes around the google map despite being on top of the map... CSS .google_map { height: 270px; width: 100%; } #flightMapInfo { position: relative; float: left; z-index: 100; color: #FFFFFF; top: 30px; left: 50px; background:#5a85a5; padding: 5px; -moz-border-radius: 10px; -webkit-border-radius: 10px; } div.tabContent { border: 1px solid #c9c3ba; padding: 0.5em; background-color: #f1f0ee; min-height: 300px; } .tableLeft { width: 75%; float: left; border-right: dotted 2px black; } HTML <div class="mapBlock tabContent"> <div id="flightMapInfo">WHARGL</div> <table class="tableLeft"> <tr><td><div id="flightMap" class="google_map"></div> </table></td></tr></div>

  • Drop Down not even showing up in IE6

    - by blackessej
    I've got a drop down menu here that just plain won't show up in IE6. The site works perfectly in every other browser. Seems daft to lose sleep over IE6, I know, but the site is for a demographic who could very well still be using it. Here's the CSS: html { height:100%; } body, p, a, ul, li, ol, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 { margin:0; padding:0; } body { behavior:url("csshover3.htc"); font-size:14px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color:#d3d3d3; height:100%; } h1 { font-size:18px; color:#752eca; text-decoration:none; } h2 { font-size:14px; color:#909090; text-decoration:none!important; } p { text-indent:20px; color:#000; } p a { color:#000; text-decoration:underline; } p.foot { text-indent:0px; } p.link { font-size:18px; color:#30F; text-decoration:underline!important; } a { color:#4d2288; text-decoration:none; outline:none; } a:visited { color:#4d2288; } p a:hover { text-decoration:underline!important; } ul#nav { padding:5px; margin:0px auto; width:100%; } ul#nav li a { display:block; font-weight:bold; padding:2px 10px; background:#bacddb; } ul#nav li a:hover { background:#888; color:#fff; } li { list-style:none; float:left; position:relative; width:225px; text-align:center; margin:0px auto; margin-right:4px; border:1px solid #4d2288; } li ul { display:none; position:relative; width:auto; top:0; left:0; margin-left:-1px; } li>ul { top:auto; left:auto; border-top:none; } li:hover ul, li.over ul { display:block; } ul#nav li.current a { background:#b8ab28; } ul#nav li.current a:hover { background:#888; } img { margin:10px 0 5px; } *html img { margin:20px; } .coltextimg { position:relative; float:left; background-position:left bottom; padding:0px 20px 10px 0px; border:none; } #maincontent { width:940px; margin:0px auto; postition:absolute; } *html #maincontent { margin-left:42px; } #header { float:left; width:100%; height:auto!important; height:100%; min-height:100%; margin:0px auto; background-image:url(images/banner_test.jpg); background-repeat:no-repeat; border:2px solid #752eca; -webkit-border-top-left-radius:10px; -webkit-border-top-right-radius:10px; -moz-border-radius-topleft:10px; -moz-border-radius-topright:10px; border-top-left-radius:10px; border-top-right-radius:10px; } .colmask { position:relative; margin-top:160px; clear:both; float:left; width:100%; overflow:hidden; } .colright, .colmid { float:left; width:100%; position:relative; } .col1, .col2 { float:left; position:relative; padding:10px 0 1em 0; overflow:hidden; } .twocol { background:#fff; } .twocol .colmid { right:45%; background:#fff; } .twocol .col1 { width:51%; left:47%; text-align:justify; z-index:0; } .twocol .col2 { width:41%; left:51%; text-align:justify; z-index:0; } .twocol .colimg { border:2px solid #a0a0a0; } .twocol .colvid1 { width:360px; height:240px; } .twocol .colvid2 { width:360px; height:240px; } #footer { text-align:center; font-size:9px; padding:10px 0 1em 0; clear:both; width:100%; height:100%; } *html #footer { height:43px; } #footer p a { text-decoration:none; } #lyr_ddmenu { position:absolute; z-index:1; height:10px; top:120px; float:left; width:1000px; margin:0px auto; padding:5px; } #contact { position:absolute; float:right; font-size:10px; } A.Controls:link { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:visited { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:active { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:hover { color:#be0000; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } And here's the html I'm having the specific problem with: <div id="maincontent"> <div id="header"> <div id="lyr_ddmenu"> <ul id="nav"> <li class="current"><href here...</a> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> </ul> </div> Thanks!

  • CSS3 Border Radius property doesn't work in localhost?

    - by user547969
    I'm having a very strange problem with css3 border radius property. My following CSS and html works fine with IE9 if i double click the file and open with the IE9 , however if the border property does not work in IE if i open the file through LOCALHOST (xampp insatlled on windows 7). The same file works fine on localhost with other browsers. How can i fix it? <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <style media="all" type="text/css">@import "circle.css";</style> </head> <body> <div class="exampleborderradiusf">F</div> </body> </html> and the CSS is: .exampleborderradiusf { float:left; background-color: #464646; margin-top: 20px; margin-right: 40px; width: 70px; height: 70px; text-align: center; -moz-border-radius: 35px; border-radius: 35px; color: white; font-size: 20px; position: relative; top: 20px; } Thanks for the help.

  • Applying drop shadows to divs

    - by CJD
    Hi everyone, I need a bit of help applying a drop shadow image to a range of DIV elements. The elements in question already have a background image so I am wrapping another DIV around them. Things get complicated further because I'm also using the 960gs CSS framework. This is my current HTML for a content box type display: <div class="grid_12 boxout-shadow-920"> <div class="boxout"> <p>planetCJD.co.uk is the personal site and blog of CJD. The site is still a work-in-progress but please do have a look around and let me know what you think! </p> </div> </div> Boxout CSS: .boxout { background:url("../images/overlay.png") repeat-x scroll 0 0 #EEEEEE; -moz-border-radius:4px 4px 4px 4px; border:1px solid #DDDDDD; margin-bottom:15px; padding:5px; } boxout-shadow-920 CSS: .boxout-shadow-920 { background:url("../images/box-shadow-920.png") no-repeat scroll 50% 101% transparent; } Now this works to a degree. The boxshadow image shows at the bottom of the content box which is what I would like. However as I'm using a fixed percentage of 101%, if the content box height is too small, not much of the drop shadow image gets shown, and if the content box is too big, whitespace starts to appear between the box and the shadow image. So anyway, what I'm looking for is a cross-browser CSS based solution for doing this properly. I'm sure there is an easy answer to this - any help is appreciated!

  • drop down menu will not display outside containing div in IE7..

    - by playahabana
    I am tearing my hair out over this, I have a dropdown menu using CSS and jQuery (thanks to Soh Tanaka) and it works perfectly in Firefox, Safari, Google chrome and I.E. 8, but in IE 7 it will not drop down outside the 'Banner div'. It drops below the nav div however. I have moved the nav div higher in the banner the result is the same, menu drops until it reaches the border of the banner div and then vanishes.... Below is the css. This is my first website and I have some limited understanding of what I am doing. The drop down menu includes transparent png's as links (I know, I know...but it's what the Boss wants...) please could someone take a quick scan at the below CSS and let me know what is wroong? Is this some form of the IE z-index bug? i have tried all different combinations of z-index and still I can't get a different result. . The html is below as well. Thankyou in advance #banner { position: relative; width: 62.5em; height: 12em; background-color: #46280A; background-image: url('images/includes/banner2.jpg'); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center; -moz-box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; -webkit-box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; /* For IE 8 */ -ms-filter: "progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(Strength=8, Direction=225, Color='#000000')"; /* For IE 5.5 - 7 */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(Strength=8, Direction=225, Color='#000000'); z-index: 1; } /*------------------------------------SCROLLER---------------------------------------------*/ #headlines{ position: absolute; top: 1.3em; right: 2.75em; overflow: hidden; height: 2.5em; width: 24em; background-color: #000000; display: block; z-index: 3; } #news{ position: relative; height: 3.1em; line-height: 2.5em; font-size: 0.8em color: #FFFF99; white-space: nowrap; overflow: hidden; font-family: Georgia,Arial; } #scrollerglass{ position: absolute; top: 0.95em; right: 2em; height: 52px; width: 410px; border: none; padding: 0.2em 0em 0em 0em; line-height: 0.7em; text-align: center; background-image: url('images/includes/scrollerglass.png'); background-color: transparent; background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center; opacity: 20; z-index: 10; } #scrollerglass a i { visibility: hiddn ; } /-------------------------------------NAVIGATION-----------------------------------------/ #nav { position: absolute; top: 5.8em; left: 0.2em; font-family: trebuchet, sans-serif; font-size: 1em; line-height: 3.75em; text-align: center; color: #FFFF00; z-index: 3; } ul.navlist { list-style: none; padding: 0em; margin: 1em; float: left; width: 62.5em; background: transparent; font-size: 1em; } ul.navlist li { position: relative; /*--Declare X and Y axis base for sub navigation--*/ float: left; margin: 0em 1.4em; padding: 0em 0.7em 0em 0em; z-index: 1; } ul.navlist li a{ display: block; text-decoration: none; float: left; border: 0px solid; } ul.navlist li img{ border: 0px solid; } ul.navlist li span { trigger styles--*/ width: 1.2em; height: 5.25em; float: left; background: url(images/links/downlogo.png) no-repeat center top; } ul.navlist li span.subhover { background-position: center bottom; cursor: pointer; } ul.navlist li ul.navdrop { list-style: none; position: absolute; float: left; top: 5.3em; left: -2.4em; height: 15.0em; width: 11.25em; margin: 0; padding: 0.5em 0em 0em 0em; display: none; background-position: center; background-image: url('images/includes/slider.jpg'); background-color: transparent; background-repeat: no-repeat; -moz-box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; -webkit-box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; /* For IE 8 */ -ms-filter: "progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(Strength=8, Direction=225, Color='#000000')"; /* For IE 5.5 - 7 */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(Strength=8, Direction=225, Color='#000000'); z-index:1; } ul.navlist li ul.navdrop li{ margin: 0em 2.3em 0em 0em; padding: 1em 0em 0em 0em; width: 8em; clear: both; } html ul.navlist li ul.navdrop li a { border: 0px solid; width: 11.25em; } html ul.navlist li ul.navdrop li a:hover { background: transparent; } <div id="banner"> <div id="headlines"> <div id="news"> Whatever we want to promote </div> </div> <div id="scrollerglass"> <a href="vintagecigars.php"> <i>------s-c-r-o-l-l-e-r - - - -l-i-n-k-s--------<br /> <br>------s-c-r-o-l-l-e-r - - - -l-i-n-k-s------</i></a> </div> <div id="nav"> <ul class="navmenu"> <li><a href="index.php"><img src="images/links/home.png" alt="Home" ></a></li> <li><a href="ourbar.php"><img src="images/links/ourbar.png" alt="Our Bar" ></a> <ul class="navdrop"> <li ><a href="ourcocktails.php"><img src="images/links/cockteles.png" alt="Our Cocktails" ></a></li> <li ><a href="celebrate.php"><img src="images/links/celebrate.png" alt="Celebrate in Style" ></a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="ourcigars.php"><img src="images/links/ourcigars.png" alt="Our Cigars" ></a> <ul class="navdrop"> <li ><a href="edicioneslimitadas.php"><img src="images/links/edicioneslimitadas.png" alt="Edition Limitadas" ></a></li> <li ><a href="cigartasting.php"><img src="images/links/cigartasting.png" alt="Cigar Tastings" ></a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="personalroller.php"><img src="images/links/personalcigar.png" alt="Personal Cigar Roller" ></a></li> <li><a href="galleryentrance.php"><img src="images/links/photogallery.png" alt="Photo Gallery" ></a></li> <li><a href="contactus.php"><img src="images/links/contactus.png" alt="Contact Us" ></a></li> </ul></div></div><!--end banner-->

  • Client-side user custom CSS single file for overriding multiple domains

    - by Cawas
    This is for using in Safari, though it could probably be used on Firefox as well. In Chrome you have to add a plugin anyway (which generally allow for custom CSS per domain), and Opera already allows this to be done without needing any CSS. But while it's for customizing on the client-side, it's also a pure CSS question. So I'm using no plugins here. So, again, I got a custom CSS code (easily) working for all domains. Now I want to get specify CSS code for each domain. All with just 1 CSS file that's being loaded by Safari. Over the web and googling, I've found two ways to supposedly do this, but none actually worked. They're both documented on userstyles.com: @-moz-document domain("your-domain.com") { }. This would be perfect, since I can have several tags like that and just choose which style will be loaded for which domain. It just doesn't work. @namespace is quite confusing and I've tried every variation I could think of. None worked.

  • Cross-browser curved borders

    - by Gandalf StormCrow
    What is the best way to achieve cross-browser(ff,ie6,chrome,opera,safari) curved corners on a div. I found this article http://jonraasch.com/blog/css-rounded-corners-in-all-browsers and I've followed instructions step by step multiple times, here is my css : #content_wrapper{ -moz-border-radius:25px 25px 25px 25px; -webkit-border-radius: 25px; -khtml-border-radius: 25px; border-radius: 25px; background-color:#F2DADC; border:25px solid #ECD3D5; height:780px; opacity:0.7; width:747px; margin:0px auto; position:relative; display:block; zoom:1; } <!--[if lte IE 8]> <style> #content_wrapper{ behavior: url(template/css/border-radius.htc); border-radius: 20px; } </style> <![endif]--> Can somebody point me what am I doing wrong or is there a better way to achieve the same effect, its working in all browsers except in IE

  • jquery animate boxshadow

    - by mstef
    http://jsfiddle.net/mstefanko/w5aAn/877/ Below, i'm achieving the effect I wanted, but with a pending issue. Since i'm using a separate span and positioning it absolute over-top of a box with relative position. I can not access the inputs until after the animation is finished. I'm guessing the only way to alleviate this would be do something similar with just animating the border of the outer box? But nothing I was doing to animate box-shadow:inset was working. HTML <div id="wow"> <span id="pulse"></span> <input id="form-input"/> <input id="form-input"/> </div>? CSS #wow { width: 500px; height: 200px; display: inline-block; position: relative; border: 1px solid black; } #pulse { width: 100%; height: 100%; box-shadow:inset 0 0 20px #6c95c3; -moz-box-shadow:inset 0 0 10px #6c95c3; position: absolute; z-index: 20000; } JS $('#pulse').stop().animate({"opacity": 0}, "fast"); $('#pulse').effect("pulsate", { times:4 }, 500, function() { $(this).remove(); });

  • Dropdown menu not showing when using position: absolute;

    - by Xiy
    I've just turned my website into a responsive layout and along the way I've somehow managed to make my dropdown menus not work. When hovering over 'Drop-downs' they don't display unless I'm using position: relative. They worked before using position: absolute - but it seems they only work with position relative now. When using relative it uses the width which messes up the navigation bar. Using relative: http://d.pr/i/tp5R Using absolute: http://d.pr/i/j7r1 CSS for my sub-menu div.left_first_header ul.sub-menu { width: 125px; top: 14px; z-index: 2; height: 100%; position: absolute; -webkit-border-radius: 0px 0px 4px 4px; -moz-border-radius: 0px 0px 4px 4px; background: url(images/drop_down_bg.jpg); padding-left: 15px; padding-right: 15px; background-repeat: repeat; } jQuery for the drop down functionality jQuery(document).ready(function ($) { jQuery("ul.dropdown li").hover(function() { $('ul:first',this).css('visibility', 'visible'); }, function() { jQuery(this).removeClass("hover"); jQuery('ul:first',this).css('visibility', 'hidden'); }); }); My website http://wpvault.com/kahlam/ Considering it's 4am I've probably made a really stupid simple mistake. I apologise if I've missed anything.

  • jQuery 1.4 Opacity and IE Filters

    - by Rick Strahl
    Ran into a small problem today with my client side jQuery library after switching to jQuery 1.4. I ran into a problem with a shadow plugin that I use to provide drop shadows for absolute elements – for Mozilla WebKit browsers the –moz-box-shadow and –webkit-box-shadow CSS attributes are used but for IE a manual element is created to provide the shadow that underlays the original element along with a blur filter to provide the fuzziness in the shadow. Some of the key pieces are: var vis = el.is(":visible"); if (!vis) el.show(); // must be visible to get .position var pos = el.position(); if (typeof shEl.style.filter == "string") sh.css("filter", 'progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Blur(makeShadow=true, pixelradius=3, shadowOpacity=' + opt.opacity.toString() + ')'); sh.show() .css({ position: "absolute", width: el.outerWidth(), height: el.outerHeight(), opacity: opt.opacity, background: opt.color, left: pos.left + opt.offset, top: pos.top + opt.offset }); This has always worked in previous versions of jQuery, but with 1.4 the original filter no longer works. It appears that applying the opacity after the original filter wipes out the original filter. IOW, the opacity filter is not applied incrementally, but absolutely which is a real bummer. Luckily the workaround is relatively easy by just switching the order in which the opacity and filter are applied. If I apply the blur after the opacity I get my correct behavior back with both opacity: sh.show() .css({ position: "absolute", width: el.outerWidth(), height: el.outerHeight(), opacity: opt.opacity, background: opt.color, left: pos.left + opt.offset, top: pos.top + opt.offset }); if (typeof shEl.style.filter == "string") sh.css("filter", 'progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Blur(makeShadow=true, pixelradius=3, shadowOpacity=' + opt.opacity.toString() + ')'); While this works this still causes problems in other areas where opacity is implicitly set in code such as for fade operations or in the case of my shadow component the style/property watcher that keeps the shadow and main object linked. Both of these may set the opacity explicitly and that is still broken as it will effectively kill the blur filter. This seems like a really strange design decision by the jQuery team, since clearly the jquery css function does the right thing for setting filters. Internally however, the opacity setting doesn’t use .css instead hardcoding the filter which given jQuery’s usual flexibility and smart code seems really inappropriate. The following is from jQuery.js 1.4: var style = elem.style || elem, set = value !== undefined; // IE uses filters for opacity if ( !jQuery.support.opacity && name === "opacity" ) { if ( set ) { // IE has trouble with opacity if it does not have layout // Force it by setting the zoom level style.zoom = 1; // Set the alpha filter to set the opacity var opacity = parseInt( value, 10 ) + "" === "NaN" ? "" : "alpha(opacity=" + value * 100 + ")"; var filter = style.filter || jQuery.curCSS( elem, "filter" ) || ""; style.filter = ralpha.test(filter) ? filter.replace(ralpha, opacity) : opacity; } return style.filter && style.filter.indexOf("opacity=") >= 0 ? (parseFloat( ropacity.exec(style.filter)[1] ) / 100) + "": ""; } You can see here that the style is explicitly set in code rather than relying on $.css() to assign the value resulting in the old filter getting wiped out. jQuery 1.32 looks a little different: // IE uses filters for opacity if ( !jQuery.support.opacity && name == "opacity" ) { if ( set ) { // IE has trouble with opacity if it does not have layout // Force it by setting the zoom level elem.zoom = 1; // Set the alpha filter to set the opacity elem.filter = (elem.filter || "").replace( /alpha\([^)]*\)/, "" ) + (parseInt( value ) + '' == "NaN" ? "" : "alpha(opacity=" + value * 100 + ")"); } return elem.filter && elem.filter.indexOf("opacity=") >= 0 ? (parseFloat( elem.filter.match(/opacity=([^)]*)/)[1] ) / 100) + '': ""; } Offhand I’m not sure why the latter works better since it too is assigning the filter. However, when checking with the IE script debugger I can see that there are actually a couple of filter tags assigned when using jQuery 1.32 but only one when I use jQuery 1.4. Note also that the jQuery 1.3 compatibility plugin for jQUery 1.4 doesn’t address this issue either. • ADF version of "Modern" dialog windows

    - by Martin Deh
    It is no surprise with the popularity of the i-devices (iphone, ipad), that many of the iOS UI based LnF (look and feel) would start to inspire web designers to incorporate the same LnF into their web sites.  Take for example, a normal dialog popup.  In the iOS world, the LnF becomes a bit more elegant by add just a simple element as a "floating" close button: In this blog post, I will describe how this can be accomplished using OOTB ADF components and CSS3 style elements. There are two ways that this can be achieved.  The easiest way is to simply replace the default image, which looks like this, and adjust the af|panelWindow:close-icon-style skin selector.   Using this simple technique, you can come up with this: The CSS code to produce this effect is pretty straight forward: af|panelWindow.test::close-icon-style{    background-image: url("../popClose.gif");    line-height: 10px;    position: absolute;    right: -10px;    top: -10px;    height:38px;    width:38px;    outline:none; } You can see from the CSS, the position of the region, which holds the image, is relocated based on the position based attributes.  Also, the addition of the "outline" attribute removes the border that is visible in Chrome and IE.  The second example, is based on not having an image to produce the close button.  Like the previous sample, I will use the OOTB panelWindow.  However, this time I will use a OOTB commandButton to replace the image.  The construct of the components looks like this: The commandButton is positioned first in the hierarchy making the re-positioning easier.  The commandButton will also need a style class assigned to it (i.e. closeButton), which will allow for the positioning and the over-riding of the default skin attributes of a default button.  In addition, the closeIconVisible property is set to false, since the default icon is no longer needed.  Once this is done, the rest is in the CSS.  Here is the sample that I created that was used for an actual customer POC: The CSS code for the button: af|commandButton.closeButton, af|commandButton.closeButton af|commandButton:text-only{     line-height: 10px;     position: absolute;     right: -10px;     top: -10px;     -webkit-border-radius: 70px;     -moz-border-radius: 70px;     -ms-border-radius: 70px;     border-radius: 70px;     background-image:none;     border:#828c95 1px solid;     background-color:black;     font-weight: bold;     text-align: center;     text-decoration: none;     color:white;     height:30px;     width:30px;     outline:none; } The CSS uses the border radius to create the round effect on the button (in IE 8, since border-radius is not supported, this will only work with some added code). Also, I add the box-shadow attribute to the panelWindow style class to give it a nice shadowing effect.

  • IE8 positioning, nightmare!

    Well hi, guess what, I have an IE positioning issue! • Solving the NP-complete problem in XKCD

    - by Adam Tuttle
    The problem/comic in question: http://xkcd.com/287/ I'm not sure this is the best way to do it, but here's what I've come up with so far. I'm using CFML, but it should be readable by anyone. <cffunction name="testCombo" returntype="boolean"> <cfargument name="currentCombo" type="string" required="true" /> <cfargument name="currentTotal" type="numeric" required="true" /> <cfargument name="apps" type="array" required="true" /> <cfset var a = 0 /> <cfset var found = false /> <cfloop from="1" to="#arrayLen(arguments.apps)#" index="a"> <cfset arguments.currentCombo = listAppend(arguments.currentCombo, arguments.apps[a].name) /> <cfset arguments.currentTotal = arguments.currentTotal + arguments.apps[a].cost /> <cfif arguments.currentTotal eq 15.05> <!--- print current combo ---> <cfoutput><strong>#arguments.currentCombo# = 15.05</strong></cfoutput><br /> <cfreturn true /> <cfelseif arguments.currentTotal gt 15.05> <cfoutput>#arguments.currentCombo# > 15.05 (aborting)</cfoutput><br /> <cfreturn false /> <cfelse> <!--- less than 15.05 ---> <cfoutput>#arguments.currentCombo# < 15.05 (traversing)</cfoutput><br /> <cfset found = testCombo(arguments.currentCombo, arguments.currentTotal, arguments.apps) /> </cfif> </cfloop> </cffunction> <cfset mf = {name="Mixed Fruit", cost=2.15} /> <cfset ff = {name="French Fries", cost=2.75} /> <cfset ss = {name="side salad", cost=3.35} /> <cfset hw = {name="hot wings", cost=3.55} /> <cfset ms = {name="moz sticks", cost=4.20} /> <cfset sp = {name="sampler plate", cost=5.80} /> <cfset apps = [ mf, ff, ss, hw, ms, sp ] /> <cfloop from="1" to="6" index="b"> <cfoutput>#testCombo(apps[b].name, apps[b].cost, apps)#</cfoutput> </cfloop> The above code tells me that the only combination that adds up to $15.05 is 7 orders of Mixed Fruit, and it takes 232 executions of my testCombo function to complete. Is there a better algorithm to come to the correct solution? Did I come to the correct solution?
