  I’m presenting in Omaha on Writing Faster SQL at 6PM on December 7th.  You can find meeting details on the Omaha SQL Server User Group page. The meeting location requires an RSVP so building security has a list of attendees. The presentation is a series of suggestions on improving performance.  It ranges from simple things like comparing indexed columns to scalar values up to tips for reducing query compiles and asynchronous processing patterns.  Nearly all of these come from specific issues I’ve encountered working on poorly performing SQL Servers.

• Alot of Pirated Material on Someone's Website - What Can Be Done?

  Hi, We've developed our website for over 10 years. Recently a website in China has begun to pirate our images and product descriptions (they are showing "new" March offerings). Nearly all of the items they "offer" are ours. Their whois leads to an outfit in France which by chance also hosts a website for Steroids, and both the Steroid and the pirate site share an 800 phone number (coincidence??). The pirate site lists "their" products as being available in mass quantities, though very often the actual product is one-of-a-kind. The images they've stolen appear in google searches alongside our own!! Clicking on any product at the pirate site leads to nowhere. Calls to the 800 number lead to a recorded answer. • What Languages are mostly understood "intuitively" and could benefit from a more formal learning approach?

  In a presentation, i stumbled upon the Statement "JavaScript is a Language everybody uses, yet nearly noone seems to find it neccessary to learn how it works". And indeed, not many of the programmers i know could explain javascript's prototype concept, or why functions need to be 'bound' to this. CSS seems to be another example of this behaviour: everyone knows how to put a 'class' to an element, and to write a style .myclass { ... }, but only a few even know of margin-collapse. My question is: are there more of those languages, technologies, concepts, that are so prevalent that we dont even notice them as something worth learning while we use them?

• Writing scripts for Visual Studio project

  What is the best way to write and run small scripts and tasks that are specific to a particular .Net project? Such things as configuring a database or confirming proper connections to servers. In Ruby, I would build rake tasks for this sort of thing. I am currently using unit tests for these tasks as they are easy to run within VS and they have access to all the necessary libraries and project code. However, this is not really their intended purpose and, with the dropping of Test Lists in VS 2012, it does not work nearly as well as it used to. Is there a better solution than writing a console project to handle these little code snippets I need to run periodically?

• Particles are not moving correctly [closed]

  I want to make a particle explosion, after something gets destroyed, but somehow only one line of mixed colors show up on the screen. PS: "Uint32 delta" is needed to update the pixels based on time. PSS: Maybe I should add that it's programmed in C and includes SDL. EDIT: Found the problem. It was the "drawParticles" function. The problem was, that I passed a double to "offset" (as particles[i].x, etc are all doubles). So I ended up with values like ~MAX_INT because I didn't cast the doubles properly to ints.

  First ,, i have just learnt c , c++ and started with java .. i faced serious problem in the first two ones . any sort of problem i can handle with it on my mind ,, if it's much complex i use the pen and paper method , i nearly could solve any easy problem ,, but when i start to write the code i don't know what's happening i got totally lost and even the best problems i can't link the solution with the code . it's not a problem with syntax because i know the syntax well . i need to figure what's the problem and find a way to solve it !! thanks . • Advise on effectively re-entering CPP world [closed]

  I am getting back into C++ world after nearly a decade. Apparently, there has been a world of development. Would like to get the developer community's advice as to what would be a good approach to have a smooth take-off. To start with, I have done the following: Read up (very briefly) on C++ 11 standards Installed GCC 4.7 Wrote a Hello World program I am sure getting a decent book and reading through it would do. • Generic Content Player?

  The general idea on the web appears to be that video/audio are to be separated with plain text. By separated, I mean you have a place that plays video/audio and a place that you read text. This is because it is widely understood that they are vastly different. However, audio and video are just another way of communication, just like text. So why do we separate the two even if they are nearly the same thing? Correct me if I'm wrong but, most tutorials are either plain text how-to's (wiki-style) or visual/auditory instructional videos (YouTube). Why aren't the two combined? Or, if it's already been done can someone reply with the link? This might be bordering off-topic and if it is off-topic then please point me to the right place so it won't be. This might also appear to be an obvious question, however I'm not sure if this subject has really been deeply thought-out by more than a few individuals.

• Windows Wireless Drivers - Install

  I have nearly ended my journey of making a dual-boot windows xp and ubuntu computer. Along with version 12.04, came the problem with my NetGear WNDA3100v2 wireless adapter. It wasn't compatible. My last step in my adventure is to install the software called Windows Wireless Drivers. I have internet access on my laptop and a flash drive. It would be preferable to receive a link to this program, because I see no link on the website, and I can't download it from the Ubuntu Software Center. Thanks.

• How to revert to 10.04

  Since "upgrading" to 12.10, the multitude of problems and slowness has wondering me , if I'm running windows, so I want to take it back to 10.04. Just some of the problems that we never had in 10.4: Can't play YouTube and chat at same time; Can't open more than 5 photos in GIMP without constant grayouts; Can't easily close apps or programs on desktop; Can't Use Avidimux and Audacity at same time, CPU load stays at 100%; New Gnome is not nearly as intuitive as classic, focus is all over the place, have to constantly switch to have the focus on right window of same program (either browser), etc. Do I need to wipe my system partition and start over, or is there an easier way to downgrade?

• Restricted Flow Of Power

  I'm sure all is fine, but i need some reassurance. Last month my company launched consolidated two of their websites into one new website. www.fdmgroup.com and www.fdmacademy.com into a newly designed www.fdmgroup.com. Because the FDM Academy grew as it's own brand we decided not to just forward the domain to the fdmgroup website, but instead just mirror the new FDM Group website and use a canonical tags to the FDM Group domain (so the link juice will pass to the FDM Group domain pages) The website has be live for nearly a month and i don't believe any power has passed down through the FDM Group website to it's deeper pages even though 301 redirects from the legacy group and academy domains in place. I am also seeing the same problem on the FDM Academy domain, but i expect to see this as every page has a canonical to the same page on the Is there anything which is restricting the flow of power through the site, or am i just being impatient.   I've decided that it's time for me to move on from Geeks with Blogs.  It's been a great platform but unforuntately I've not used it nearly as much as I should.  It's been over a year and a half since my last post.  It's not that I haven't had worthwhile stuff to post, it's more due to a lack of motivation.  Knowing how I work, I think part of the problem with me using GWB is that it's free.  If I don't use it, I don't feel like I'm wasting anything.  With that in mind, I've decided to move to a paid host in hopes that drives me to post more frequently.  My new blog is located at the following address:http://thirteendaysaweek.comIn the coming days and weeks I'll be working on moving my content to the new site and will leave posts here that redirect to the new site.

  A while ago I was talking with my manager at the time about traits that we value in a Program Manager. He related an anecdote about an interview he gave where it became clear that the candidate did not deal well with ambiguity. • What videoconferencing platforms work best for distributed software development teams?

  Today I had a religious experience: I participated in a videoconference using a high quality Polycom system. This made a huge difference in communication quality -- people that I had a terrible time understanding previously now sounded like Shakespeare. Seeing a high quality video image was enormously helpful. I asked operations how much the Polycom cost and they said that it cost $20K new and $4K off eBay. So this solution doesn't work for people who work from home or who work in offices but are in groups of 3 or fewer people. My budget for a videoconferencing system is a few hundred dollars per person. Skype is not nearly good enough. And I haven't seen a consumer webcam that is good enough either. Does such a solution exist? I'm looking to collaborate both with people who are close by (in the same city but not in the same room) and far away (on different continents).

• What is Rails way to save images?

  I develop on iOS, and I'm switching from a PHP backend to Ruby on Rails. The interchange format is JSON. A quick Google search for 'save images in Rails' has nearly every result talking about saving image data as blobs to the database. I might be mistaken, but I'm under the impression that saving image data in a database is a huge waste of time and space (as opposed to saving a link to the file location ('/img/subcat/4656.png'). In PHP, it's pretty standard to receive the data, generate a filename, then save that file to disk, and then update the database with the image's location on disk. Is this the same for Rails, or is there some built-in ActiveRecord image functionality I'm not aware of?

• Unity, Unrealistic Sphere On Inclined Plane

  So I am trying to model a ball rolling down an inclined surface in Unity based on what I am observing in real life but it is still quite off. In Unity it takes the ball about 3 seconds to travel from a place to another specified place where in real life it only takes 1 second. The ball isn't as fast to react to the incline as in real life (even though I have tried giving the ball and surface low or zero friction values) The ball does not accelerate as nearly as fast as it does in real life What do I do to give the ball more realistic behavior ? I have tried messing around with mass, physics materials, drag, and angular drag on the ball and surface but it doesn't seem to be helping.

• How does a linked library combined with the main executable program file interact with a kernel?

  I was attempting to find an answer to this, and I did to some degree, but definitely not anywhere good enough to form a respectable, sensible and clear answer. If I am using Windows, Mac, Linux, or nearly any modern made OS for desktop IBM-compatible PCs, laptops, even tablets and smartphones, there's virtual memory. Clearly, compiling, at least on Windows I know this, an executable object file, such as a simple C "Hello World" output to a terminal, will be linked with the standard library, and several other Window's system software, dynamic linked libraries, and the like. However, how does linking all of these executables together or resources form a connectable interaction with, say, a device driver or any other stuff on the lower level?

  This question already has an answer here: How did Google find my unlinked newly created pages? 3 answers I am working on a web project that has nearly 100 thousand instant users and there is a webpage that we are using for test cases. There are no links pointing to it from other pages. It shouldn't be indexed by Google or any other search engines. "noindex" can be used in this situation, I know but I wonder if Google (or any others) indexes this page, if I don't do anything to prevent it.

Given that all of Module Public Helper classes are instantiated with a minimum set of constructor params, e.g. EntityManager, what would be the best way to get a copy of it? Obviously, we can't really inject the user public helper class into the class containing createSale One solution would be to use a service locator or registry, however, testing the application isn't exactly easy.

I am working on my php course project and for the past few days I have stucked at the point where I have to create php function which gets 5 parameters which represents information about the working time of some department - when the work starts/ends, when the lunchtime (or any other break) starts/ends and integer representing minutes into how small piecies we should divide time period. Besides - it's possible that there are not any breaks in the working time. • C# Printing and Zebra Printer

  I wrote a library which creates a bitmap image from some user input. This bitmap is then printed using a zebra printer. The problem I am running into is everything is very faint and blurry on the image printed by the zebra printer but if I print the bitmap to a laser printer it looks perfectly normal. Has anyone run into this before and if so how did they fix it? I have tried nearly everything I can think of printer settings wise.
