  • RAII: Initializing data member in const method

    - by Thomas Matthews
    In RAII, resources are not initialized until they are accessed. However, many access methods are declared constant. I need to call a mutable (non-const) function to initialize a data member. Example: Loading from a data base struct MyClass { int get_value(void) const; private: void load_from_database(void); // Loads the data member from database. int m_value; }; int MyClass :: get_value(void) const { static bool value_initialized(false); if (!value_initialized) { // The compiler complains about this call because // the method is non-const and called from a const // method. load_from_database(); } return m_value; } My primitive solution is to declare the data member as mutable. I would rather not do this, because it suggests that other methods can change the member. How would I cast the load_from_database() statement to get rid of the compiler errors?

  • EF4: common interface for EF entities

    - by Feryt
    Hi. I have public interface: public interface IEntity { int ID { get; set; } string Name { get; set; } bool IsEnabled { get; set; } } ehich some EF entities implements(thanks to partial class) and extesion method: public static IEnumerable<SelectListItem> ToSelectListItems<T>(this IQueryable<T> entities, int? selectedID = null) where T : IEntity { return entities.Select(c => new { c.Name, c.ID }).ToList().Select(c => new SelectListItem { Text = c.Name, Value = c.ID.ToString(), Selected = (c.ID == selectedID) }); } Calling ToSelectListItems return exception: Unable to cast the type '<EF entity name>' to type 'IEntity'. LINQ to Entities only supports casting Entity Data Model primitive types. Why, any ideas? Thank you.

  • Direct video card access

    - by icemanind
    Guys, I am trying to write a class in C# that can be used as a direct replacement for the C# Bitmap class. What I want to do instead though is perform all graphic functions done on the bitmap using the power of the video card. From what I understand, functions such as DrawLine or DrawArc or DrawText are primitive functions that use simple cpu math algorithms to perform the job. I, instead, want to use the graphics card cpu and memory to do these and other advanced functions, such as skinning a bitmap (applying a texture) and true transparancy. My problem is, in C#, how do I access direct video functions? Is there a library or something I need?

  • JSF2 - use view scope managed bean to pass value between navigation

    - by Fekete Kamosh
    Hi all, I am solving how to pass values from one page to another without making use of session scope managed bean. For most managed beans I would like to have only Request scope. I created a very, very simple calculator example which passes Result object resulting from actions on request bean (CalculatorRequestBean) from 5th phase as initializing value for new instance of request bean initialized in next phase lifecycle. In fact - in production environment we need to pass much more complicated data object which is not as primitive as Result defined below. What is your opinion on this solution which considers both possibilities - we stay on the same view or we navigate to the new one. But in both cases I can get to previous value stored passed using view scoped managed bean. Calculator page: <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' ?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html"> <h:head> <title>Calculator</title> </h:head> <h:body> <h:form> <h:panelGrid columns="2"> <h:outputText value="Value to use:"/> <h:inputText value="#{calculatorBeanRequest.valueToAdd}"/> <h:outputText value="Navigate to new view:"/> <h:selectBooleanCheckbox value="#{calculatorBeanRequest.navigateToNewView}"/> <h:commandButton value="Add" action="#{calculatorBeanRequest.add}"/> <h:commandButton value="Subtract" action="#{calculatorBeanRequest.subtract}"/> <h:outputText value="Result:"/> <h:outputText value="#{calculatorBeanRequest.result.value}"/> <h:outputText value="DUMMY" rendered="#{resultBeanView.dummy}"/> </h:panelGrid> </h:form> </h:body> Object to be passed through lifecycle: package cz.test.calculator; import java.io.Serializable; /** * Data object passed among pages. * Lets imagine it holds something much more complicated than primitive int */ public class Result implements Serializable { private int value; public void setValue(int value) { this.value = value; } public int getValue() { return value; } } Request scoped managed bean used on view "calculator.xhtml" package cz.test.calculator; import javax.annotation.PostConstruct; import javax.faces.bean.ManagedBean; import javax.faces.bean.ManagedProperty; import javax.faces.bean.RequestScoped; @ManagedBean @RequestScoped public class CalculatorBeanRequest { @ManagedProperty(value="#{resultBeanView}") ResultBeanView resultBeanView; private Result result; private int valueToAdd; /** * Should perform navigation to */ private boolean navigateToNewView; /** Creates a new instance of CalculatorBeanRequest */ public CalculatorBeanRequest() { } @PostConstruct public void init() { // Remember already saved result from view scoped bean result = resultBeanView.getResult(); } // Dependency injections public void setResultBeanView(ResultBeanView resultBeanView) { this.resultBeanView = resultBeanView; } public ResultBeanView getResultBeanView() { return resultBeanView; } // Getters, setter public void setValueToAdd(int valueToAdd) { this.valueToAdd = valueToAdd; } public int getValueToAdd() { return valueToAdd; } public boolean isNavigateToNewView() { return navigateToNewView; } public void setNavigateToNewView(boolean navigateToNewView) { this.navigateToNewView = navigateToNewView; } public Result getResult() { return result; } // Actions public String add() { result.setValue(result.getValue() + valueToAdd); return isNavigateToNewView() ? "calculator" : null; } public String subtract() { result.setValue(result.getValue() - valueToAdd); return isNavigateToNewView() ? "calculator" : null; } } and finally view scoped managed bean to pass Result variable to new page: package cz.test.calculator; import java.io.Serializable; import javax.annotation.PostConstruct; import javax.faces.bean.ManagedBean; import javax.faces.bean.ViewScoped; import javax.faces.context.FacesContext; @ManagedBean @ViewScoped public class ResultBeanView implements Serializable { private Result result = new Result(); /** Creates a new instance of ResultBeanView */ public ResultBeanView() { } @PostConstruct public void init() { // Try to find request bean ManagedBeanRequest and reset result value CalculatorBeanRequest calculatorBeanRequest = (CalculatorBeanRequest)FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getRequestMap().get("calculatorBeanRequest"); if(calculatorBeanRequest != null) { setResult(calculatorBeanRequest.getResult()); } } /** No need to have public modifier as not used on view * but only in managed bean within the same package */ void setResult(Result result) { this.result = result; } /** No need to have public modifier as not used on view * but only in managed bean within the same package */ Result getResult() { return result; } /** * To be called on page to instantiate ResultBeanView in Render view phase */ public boolean isDummy() { return false; } }

  • Switch to BigInteger if necessary

    - by fahdshariff
    I am reading a text file which contains numbers in the range [1, 10^100]. I am then performing a sequence of arithmetic operations on each number. I would like to use a BigInteger only if the number is out of the int/long range. One approach would be to count how many digits there are in the string and switch to BigInteger if there are too many. Otherwise I'd just use primitive arithmetic as it is faster. Is there a better way? Is there any reason why Java could not do this automatically i.e. switch to BigInteger if an int was too small? This way we would not have to worry about overflows.

  • How can I use BeanUtils copyProperties to copy from boolean to Boolean?

    - by carrier
    BeanUtils copyProperties, out of the box, doesn't seem to handle copying from Boolean object properties to boolean primitive properties. I figured I could create and register a converter to handle this, but that just didn't seem to work. So, how can I use BeanUtils to copy the properties from class Source to class Destination where: public class Destination { private boolean property; public boolean isProperty() { return property; } public void setProperty(boolean property) { this.property = property; } } public class Source{ private Boolean property; public Boolean getProperty() { return property; } public void setProperty(Boolean property) { this.property = property; } }

  • C++ library for Coordinate Transformation Matrices (CTM)?

    - by BastiBense
    I'm looking for a C++ library which allows for easy integration of Coordinate Transformation Matrices (CTM) in my application. You might know CTMs from PDF or PostScript. For one project we are using C++/Qt4 as a framework, which offers a QTransform class, which provides methods like .translate(double x, double y) or .rotate(double degrees). After doing some transformations, it would allow me to get all 6 CTM values, which I could feed into a PDF library or use a transformation matrix in export files. Qt's API also allows for arbitrary mapping of polygons (QPolygon), rectangles (QRect) and other primitive data structures into transformed coordinate systems. So basically I'm looking for something similar to what Qt provides, but without the need of using Qt. I know I could do the matrix multiplications myself, but I'm not really interested in doing so, as I'm very sure that someone already solved this problem, so please no links to books or other guides on how to multiply matrices. Thanks!

Later I created a mobile project on vs2008 and added proxy files on project but this error occured. Error 1 The type or namespace name 'ServiceContractAttribute' does not exist in the namespace 'System.ServiceModel' (are you missing an assembly reference?) C:\Users\Abb\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\WCF\MobileService\MobileClient\Sample.cs the proxy files runs well on console application (vs 2008) but there is errors on mobile. • How are CD Keys generated?

    - by The Rook
    CD Keys are the defacto-standard as an anti-piracy measure. To be honest this strikes me as Security Though Obscurity, although I really have no idea how CD Keys are generated. What is a good (secure) example of CD Key generation? What cryptographic primitive (if any) are they using? Is it a message digest? If so what data would they be hashing? What methods do developers employ to make it difficult for crackers to build their own key generators?

  • What's the cross-browser way to capture all single clicks on a button?

    - by sany
    What's the best way to execute a function exactly once every time a button is clicked, regardless of click speed and browser? Simply binding a "click" handler works perfectly in all browsers except IE. In IE, when the user clicks too fast, only "dblclick" fires, so the "click" handler is never executed. Other browsers trigger both events so it's not a problem for them. The obvious solution/hack (to me at least) is to attach a dblclick handler in IE that triggers my click handler twice. Another idea is to track clicks myself with mousedown/mouseup, which seems pretty primitive and probably belongs in a framework rather than my application. So, what's the best/usual/right way of handling this? (pure javascript or jQuery preferred)

  • Facebook Open Graph without a browser

    - by Hellnar
    Hello, For a middleware system with internet (which works inside a set-top box) I want to develop a primitive Facebook interface where users can type their user-names and password, showing their latest notification, messages and other casual stuff on the TV screen by using the recent Facebook Graph API. This middleware program uses Java ME to run programs (such as this simple facebook app) and it can connect to internet however it doesn't have a real web browser. Without browser it can connect to any url to retrieve the JSON response however I am not sure how to achieve authentication without a real browser. Under this circumstances, is it possible Facebook authentication? If you think so, what approach would you suggest ? Thanks

  • Optimizing python code performance when importing zipped csv to a mongo collection

    - by mark
    I need to import a zipped csv into a mongo collection, but there is a catch - every record contains a timestamp in Pacific Time, which must be converted to the local time corresponding to the (longitude,latitude) pair found in the same record. The code looks like so: def read_csv_zip(path, timezones): with ZipFile(path) as z, z.open(z.namelist()[0]) as input: csv_rows = csv.reader(input) header = csv_rows.next() check,converters = get_aux_stuff(header) for csv_row in csv_rows: if check(csv_row): row = { converter[0]:converter[1](value) for converter, value in zip(converters, csv_row) if allow_field(converter) } ts = row['ts'] lng, lat = row['loc'] found_tz_entry = timezones.find_one(SON({'loc': {'$within': {'$box': [[lng-tz_lookup_radius, lat-tz_lookup_radius],[lng+tz_lookup_radius, lat+tz_lookup_radius]]}}})) if found_tz_entry: tz_name = found_tz_entry['tz'] local_ts = ts.astimezone(timezone(tz_name)).replace(tzinfo=None) row['tz'] = tz_name else: local_ts = (ts.astimezone(utc) + timedelta(hours = int(lng/15))).replace(tzinfo = None) row['local_ts'] = local_ts yield row def insert_documents(collection, source, batch_size): while True: items = list(itertools.islice(source, batch_size)) if len(items) == 0: break; try: collection.insert(items) except: for item in items: try: collection.insert(item) except Exception as exc: print("Failed to insert record {0} - {1}".format(item['_id'], exc)) def main(zip_path): with Connection() as connection: data = connection.mydb.data timezones = connection.timezones.data insert_documents(data, read_csv_zip(zip_path, timezones), 1000) The code proceeds as follows: Every record read from the csv is checked and converted to a dictionary, where some fields may be skipped, some titles be renamed (from those appearing in the csv header), some values may be converted (to datetime, to integers, to floats. etc ...) For each record read from the csv, a lookup is made into the timezones collection to map the record location to the respective time zone. If the mapping is successful - that timezone is used to convert the record timestamp (pacific time) to the respective local timestamp. If no mapping is found - a rough approximation is calculated. The timezones collection is appropriately indexed, of course - calling explain() confirms it. The process is slow. Naturally, having to query the timezones collection for every record kills the performance. I am looking for advises on how to improve it. Thanks. EDIT The timezones collection contains 8176040 records, each containing four values: > db.data.findOne() { "_id" : 3038814, "loc" : [ 1.48333, 42.5 ], "tz" : "Europe/Andorra" } EDIT2 OK, I have compiled a release build of http://toblerity.github.com/rtree/ and configured the rtree package. Then I have created an rtree dat/idx pair of files corresponding to my timezones collection. So, instead of calling collection.find_one I call index.intersection. Surprisingly, not only there is no improvement, but it works even more slowly now! May be rtree could be fine tuned to load the entire dat/idx pair into RAM (704M), but I do not know how to do it. Until then, it is not an alternative. In general, I think the solution should involve parallelization of the task. • Navigation properties not set when using ADO.NET Mocking Context Generator

    - by olenak
    I am using ADO.NET Mocking Context Generator plugin for my Entity Framework model. I have not started on using mocks yet, just trying to fix generated entity and context classes to make application run as before without exceptions. I've already fixed T4 template to support SaveChanges method. Now I've got another problem: when I try to access any navigation property it is set to null. All the primitive fields inherited from DB table are set and correct. So what I am doing is the following using (var context = MyContext()) { var order = context.Orders.Where(p => p.Id == 7); var product = order.Products; } in this case product is set to null. But that was not a case while using default code generator, it used to return real product object. Thanks ahead for any suggestions!

  • Programming tutorials for people with zero experience

    - by www.aegisub.net
    A friend of mine is interested in learning how to program computers, but she knows nothing about programming. I suggested that Python might be a good language to start with, but after some googling, I couldn't find any tutorials that covered both programming and Python in an adequate way. I don't want her to go through the tiresome "learn algorithms in pseudocode first" routine. Instead, I'd like a tutorial that will explain the basic ideas while working towards a real goal, e.g. a very simple console game. Does anyone know of any such tutorials? Do you think that I'm mistaken in how I'm handling this? Is Python a bad choice? I know that something like C, C++ or Java won't work - too many details will be very counterproductive. On the other hand, I think that Lisp might be too mathematical and abstract. Python, on the other hand, will let her even do something like coding primitive graphical games in a short period of time.

  • When accessing ResultSets in JDBC, is there an elegant way to distinguish between nulls and actual z

    - by Uri
    When using JDBC and accessing primitive types via a result set, is there a more elegant way to deal with the null/0 than the following: int myInt = rs.getInt(columnNumber) if(rs.wasNull())? { // Treat as null } else { // Treat as 0 } I personally cringe whenever I see this sort of code. I fail to see why ResultSet was not defined to return the boxed integer types (except, perhaps, performance) or at least provide both. Bonus points if anyone can convince me that the current API design is great :) My solution was to write a wrapper that returns an Integer (I care more about elegance of client code than performance), but I'm wondering if I'm missing a better way to do this.

  • .Net Round-trip Types

    I making a method that generate a unique string key for some parameters. But the same key if call with same values. I just accept primitive types, string, DateTime, Guid, and Nullable(since I append types together, I can distinguish who is int and who is int?), because I can convert all to string without lost values or precision.(for float and double a use ToString("R"), to DateTime ToString("O")). Exists a easy way to know which types I can transform in strings without conflict? And how do this transform(how I said before, float, double and datetime have specific ways) Thanks

  • Should we avoid to use Object as the input parameter/ output value of a method?

    - by developer.cyrus
    Take Java syntax as an example, though the question itself is language independent. If the following snippet takes an object MyAbstractEmailTemplate as input argument in the method setTemplate, the class MyGateway will then become tightly-coupled with the object MyAbstractEmailTemplate, which lessens the re-usability of the class MyGateway. A compromise is to use dependency-injection to ease the instantiation of MyAbstractEmailTemplate. This might solve the coupling problem to some extent, but the interface is still rigid, hardly providing enough ?exibility to other developers/ applications. So if we only use primitive data type (or even plain XML in web service) as the input/ output of a method, it seems the coupling problem no longer exists. So what do you think? public class MyGateway { protected MyAbstractEmailTemplate template; publoc void setTemplate(MyAbstractEmailTemplate template) { this.template = template; } }

  • Create Class objects based on type signature

    - by Andreas_D
    Class.forName(boolean.class.getName()); This doesn't work in Java - the virtual machine slaps you with a ClassNotFoundException. I was in need for something like that because I wanted to reflect methods based on Strings that included the method signatures, like public void doSomething(boolean yesWeCan, java.lang.String[] presidents); At the end I came up with a custom 'ClassFactory' which translates the type Strings to class objects. This factory includes a lot of handlers for primitive and array type values. The handler for array type objects is something like: if (isArrayOfObjects) { return Class.forName("L["+typeName.replace("[]", "")+";"); } My question is - have I missed something in the Java 1.5+ API that might do the trick?

  • How to default-initialize local variables of built-in types in C++?

    - by sharptooth
    How do I default-initialize a local variable of primitive type in C++? For example if a have a typedef: typedef unsigned char boolean;//that's Microsoft RPC runtime typedef I'd like to change the following line: boolean variable = 0; //initialize to some value to ensure reproduceable behavior retrieveValue( &variable ); // do actual job into something that would automagically default-initialize the variable - I don't need to assign a specific value to it, but instead I only need it to be intialized to the same value each time the program runs - the same stuff as with a constructor initializer list where I can have: struct Struct { int Value; Struct() : Value() {} }; and the Struct::Value will be default-initialized to the same value every time an instance is cinstructed, but I never write the actual value in the code. How can I get the same behavior for local variables?

  • Designing entire webpages as SVG files

    - by user1311390
    Disclaimer I realize that given the absurdity of the title, this sounds like a troll. However, it's a genuine question. My background involves OpenGL / x86 assembly. I've recently started learning web programming. I really like SVG + CSS, and was wondering -- why do people not design entire webpages in SVG? Context SVG provides beautiful primitive: quadratic + cubic bezier curves; lines + filling -- all as vector graphics SVG provides text SVG provides affine transformations Questions Are there examples of people designing entire websites as a giant SVG file? If not, what the limitations? Are there performance hits when using SVG primitives as opposed to divs/tables?

  • Overloading assignment operator in C#

    - by Carson Myers
    I know the = operator can't be overloaded, but there must be a way to do what I want here: I'm just creating classes to represent quantitative units, since I'm doing a bit of physics. Apparently I can't just inherit from a primitive, but I want my classes to behave exactly like primitives -- I just want them typed differently. So I'd be able to go, Velocity ms = 0; ms = 17.4; ms += 9.8; etc. I'm not sure how to do this. I figured I'd just write some classes like so: class Power { private Double Value { get; set; } //operator overloads for +, -, /, *, =, etc } But apparently I can't overload the assignment operator. Is there any way I can get this behavior?

  • Differences between extension methods in C#3 & 4

    - by Buh Buh
    I think I remember reading a long time ago that in C#3 extension methods could only be applied to primitive types and interfaces; and that in C#4 they could be used to extend any type. This doesn't seam to match up with what I am seeing now and I am finding it difficult to find this documented. Is there any truth to this or did my memory make it all up? What are the rules relating to which types can be extended? Are there any differences between C# 3 and 4?

  • What the best way to convert from String to HashMap?

    - by eugenn
    I would like to serialize a Java HashMap to string representation. The HashMap will contains only primitive values like string and integer. After that this string will be stored to db. How to restore back the HashMap? Is it make sense to use BeanUtils and interface Converter or use JSON? For example: List list = new ArrayList(); list.add(new Long(1)); list.add(new Long(2)); list.add(new Long(4)); Map map = new HashMap(); map.put("cityId", new Integer(1)); map.put("name", "test"); map.put("float", new Float(-3.2)); map.put("ids", list); map.toString() -> {float=-3.2,ids=[1, 2, 4],name=test,cityId=1} map.toJSON -> {"float":-3.2,"ids":[1,2,4],"name":"test","cityId":1}
