  • What to expect when creating a style guide?

    - by ted.strauss
My organization would like to create a full fledged style guide that will be applicable to internal & external web sites, print advertising, trade show design, and overall branding. This article lays out the scope we're aiming for, and has links to many great examples style guide PDFs. The goal is to create a style guide comparable to one of these. I'd like to set realistic expectations within my organization for creating this document. So I have a few of questions pertaining to this: We don't have design staff. Should we be looking for a design firm or freelancer to come in for a 2-6 month contract, or do we need a longer commitment? If we do go with a firm or freelancer, would the pay-scale be comparable to typical design work, or is a style guide a higher order of work? How long should it take a pro to create a style guide? To make estimates more concrete, let's say web only, including all custom graphics. Any red flags to watch out for? (Compare: a new coder who fails to use css properly would be a red flag.)

  • Are closures with side-effects considered "functional style"?

    - by Giorgio
Many modern programming languages support some concept of closure, i.e. of a piece of code (a block or a function) that Can be treated as a value, and therefore stored in a variable, passed around to different parts of the code, be defined in one part of a program and invoked in a totally different part of the same program. Can capture variables from the context in which it is defined, and access them when it is later invoked (possibly in a totally different context). Here is an example of a closure written in Scala: def filterList(xs: List[Int], lowerBound: Int): List[Int] = xs.filter(x => x >= lowerBound) The function literal x => x >= lowerBound contains the free variable lowerBound, which is closed (bound) by the argument of the function filterList that has the same name. The closure is passed to the library method filter, which can invoke it repeatedly as a normal function. I have been reading a lot of questions and answers on this site and, as far as I understand, the term closure is often automatically associated with functional programming and functional programming style. The definition of function programming on wikipedia reads: In computer science, functional programming is a programming paradigm that treats computation as the evaluation of mathematical functions and avoids state and mutable data. It emphasizes the application of functions, in contrast to the imperative programming style, which emphasizes changes in state. and further on [...] in functional code, the output value of a function depends only on the arguments that are input to the function [...]. Eliminating side effects can make it much easier to understand and predict the behavior of a program, which is one of the key motivations for the development of functional programming. On the other hand, many closure constructs provided by programming languages allow a closure to capture non-local variables and change them when the closure is invoked, thus producing a side effect on the environment in which they were defined. In this case, closures implement the first idea of functional programming (functions are first-class entities that can be moved around like other values) but neglect the second idea (avoiding side-effects). Is this use of closures with side effects considered functional style or are closures considered a more general construct that can be used both for a functional and a non-functional programming style? Is there any literature on this topic? IMPORTANT NOTE I am not questioning the usefulness of side-effects or of having closures with side effects. Also, I am not interested in a discussion about the advantages / disadvantages of closures with or without side effects. I am only interested to know if using such closures is still considered functional style by the proponent of functional programming or if, on the contrary, their use is discouraged when using a functional style.

  • Is it possible to print on a networked Windows Print server from an AIX server, without using remote printer queues?

    - by Stringent Software
I have an application on an AIX server (v5.3) that needs to print via a Windows Print Server over the LAN. The simplest way to do this is to use SMIT to setup a remote print queue - which I've done on the test environment - but the IT department have refused to set up a remote print queue on the Production server. I don't have root access to the Production server. Is there any other method for connecting the app to the print server that doesn't involve print queues on the AIX box?

  • What can be the reason that Google Chrome does not have print preview?

    - by eSKay
I am not looking for a subtitute or a hack to get a print preview, but just wondering what the possible reasons could be for Google leaving this essential tool out from an excellent browser? They are adding this functionality from Chrome 6, but the question still remains - why not uptil now? Print preview is one of the essential features. There must be some good reason.

  • How to print multiple Excel sheets into a single PDF file?

    - by Anriëtte Combrink
I am trying to print multiple sheets from the same Excel workbook into ONE PDF file. But it frequently prints them seperately or only the first sheet. I selected all the sheets and made them have the same page setup. I am working on Tiger and from the Print dialogue, I click on the left-hand bottom button, "Save PDF" and from there I choose "Save PDF-X". Anyone have another solution for me?

  • Retiring a print server but looking for a method to confirm no one is still connecting to it

    - by Richard West
I have a Windows 2003 print server that I need to retire. Through variaous methods (login scripts, etc) I think that I had everyone migrated off of this server and connected to the new print server. Having said that, I'd like to make sure before taking the server down :-) Is there a script that I can run to query a remote workstations in my domain to see what printer shares it is connected to?

  • Is there a way to prevent UIImagePickerController change statusbar style?

    - by Eonil
UIImagePickerController changes statusbar style to black/opaque. I want to keep status-bar style black/translucent. I'm finding a way to prevent status bar style changing. Or making it transited smoothly. Now, presenting UIImagePickerController changes status-bar style instantly, even -[presentModalViewController:picker animated:YES] specified. Any method, welcome, including hacking or private method. This is an app for AppStore, however I want to even try.

  • My style/control template out my calendar's blackout dates.

    - by Chris
Howdy, My C#/WPF project needs a calendar. We're going to be using it to pick a range of dates for appointment scheduling. I'm told the default calendar is too small to be used by some of our reps so I've been working on resizing it. <toolkit:Calendar Grid.Row="1" x:Name="DateWindowCalendar" BorderBrush="White" BorderThickness="0" Style="{StaticResource PopupCalendarStyle}" DisplayMode="Month" SelectionMode="SingleRange" DisplayDateStart="{Binding FirstDayOfMonth}" AutomationProperties.AutomationId="ToolkitCalendarId" VerticalAlignment="Top"> </toolkit:Calendar> And I've created this styling: <Style x:Key="PopupCalendarStyle" TargetType="toolkit:Calendar"> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="toolkit:Calendar"> <StackPanel Margin="0" HorizontalAlignment="Center" x:Name="Root"> <toolkit:Calendar x:Name="Calendar" SelectedDate="{TemplateBinding SelectedDate}" DisplayDateStart="{TemplateBinding DisplayDateStart}" SelectionMode="{TemplateBinding SelectionMode}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" SelectedDatesChanged="Calendar_SelectedDatesChanged"> <toolkit:Calendar.CalendarDayButtonStyle> <Style> <Setter Property="Button.Height" Value="34"/> <Setter Property="Button.Width" Value="34" /> <Setter Property="Button.FontSize" Value="16" /> </Style> </toolkit:Calendar.CalendarDayButtonStyle> <toolkit:Calendar.CalendarButtonStyle> <Style> <Setter Property="Button.Height" Value="34"/> <Setter Property="Button.Width" Value="34"/> <Setter Property="Button.FontSize" Value="16"/> </Style> </toolkit:Calendar.CalendarButtonStyle> </toolkit:Calendar> </StackPanel> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> Everything is almost perfect. I specify my range, I can track the selected dates (granted using the SelectedDatesChanged event instead of the SelectedDates property. The problem is I also need to be able to set blackout dates (usually the period between first of the month and today although sometimes first of the month to a few days from now). Without the styling, this works: DateWindowCalendar.BlackoutDates.Add(new CalendarDateRange( new DateTime(DateTime.Now.Year, DateTime.Now.Month, 01), DateTime. Now)); But when I add the style, I don't get the black out displays being displayed and worse its possible to select the blackout dates. I'm not sure what I missed but I'm hoping someone has an easy answer so that I don't have to rebuild the entire widget. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Chris

  • When should I use print instead of echo in PHP?

    - by Rob
I understand that echo is slightly faster, and print can be used as a function, but I've been reading an e-book on PHP, and the writer is using print, instead of echo, to output very simple text. print "Your name is $name\n"; So my question is, when would it be appropriate for me to use print as opposed to echo?

  • SSRS 2008 printing single page renders different for print

    - by user270437
I have a problem with SSRS 2008 reports rendering differently on the reporting server than the way it renders when you print the report. I’m trying to figure out to print a single page and have the print show that same records as I see on the report on the screen. As a test, I created a simple report with no headers or footers and just added a Tablix table to display the records (no groupings). My data set for this test displays 2 ¼ pages of records when I deploy it to our reporting services server and run it. If I click the print Icon and preview the report is 2 ¾ pages. I haven’t found anything searching on this so it makes me think it is something simple I’m missing. A basically want the report to render the same records on each page in Report Manager as it does when it prints, how do I accomplish this? (In response to answer posted by Chris)…If that is the case then it is disappointing. Customers are accustomed to WYSIWYG and will have a hard time understanding that, I imagine we will be getting a lot of support calls. This still leaves an issue. I tried using print preview and could not find any way to single out a page. If I select a page up front to print, or preview it renders different so I get different records. And if I preview the entire document, I can only print the entire document. You mentioned the Excel render; we have customers that will want that also. The problem I have found with Excel exports is that even a basic report winds up merging some cells and that messes up sorting. I’m going to try your tip about grouping to see if I can get a clean export to a page. It would have been nice if they would have created a property for certain controls like the tablix table called “ExcelSheet”. Then all you would have to do is give it a name and it would create a new sheet for each control with a name, the name becoming the sheet title. Thanks for the information you supplied it is very useful as I’m new to SSRS. If you know how I can Preview in print render and select individual pages to print from the render let me know. Update 02/19/2010 After testing this more I now realize it is just a bad design of Report managers print driver or a limitation because it is server based. The options work differently than Windows apps drivers, But I did find a work around. Here is the test I performed comparing Excel to Report Manager. I bring up a report that will render more than 1 page when printed. I then export to Excel, in Excel I select print preview. I can navigate the pages in preview and then select a single page like page 3. I can then print just page 3 without leaving print preview and it prints just like it rendered. I cannot do this using print in report manager. If I select print preview in report manager then try to print while in preview it always prints the entire document. However if I close out of print preview, I can then select page 3 and print it as rendered. It is just one additional step once you know what to do, but it took some time to figure it out.

  • Crop, Edit, and Print Photos in Windows 7 Media Center

    - by DigitalGeekery
Windows Media Center is a nice application for managing and displaying your personal photos, but you may occasionally need to make some basic edits to your pictures. Today we’ll take a look at how to crop, edit, and print photos right from Windows 7 Media Center. From within the Picture Library in Windows Media Center, choose a photo to work with, right-click and select Picture Details. You can also access this option with a Media Center remote by clicking the “i” button. Note: You’ll notice you have the option to rotate the picture from this menu. It is also available on the next screen.  Rotate a picture Now you’ll see more options on the Picture Details screen. From here you can rotate, Print, or Touch Up, Delete, or Burn a CD/DVD. To rotate the picture, simple select Rotate. Note: If you want your photo saved with the new orientation, you’ll need to select Save from the Touch Up screen that we will look at later in the article.   Each click will rotate the picture 90 degrees clockwise. You’ll see the new orientation of the picture displayed on the Picture Details screen after you have clicked Rotate. Print a picture From the Picture Details screen, select Print. Click Print again. Media Center automatically prints to your default printer, so make sure your desired target printer is set as default. Crop and Edit Photos To edit or crop your photo, select Touch Up. Touch Up options includes, Crop, Contrast, and Red Eye removal. First, we’ll select the Crop button to crop our photo.   You will see a cropping area overlay appear on your photo. Select one of the buttons below to adjust the location, size, and orientation of the area to be cropped. When you’re happy with your selection, click Save. You’ll be prompted to confirm your save. Click Yes to permanently save your edits. You can also apply Contrast or Red Eye adjustments to your photos. There aren’t any advanced settings for these options. You merely toggle the Contrast or Red Eye on or off by selecting the option. Be sure to click Save before exiting to if you’ve made any changes you wish to permanently apply to the photos. This includes rotating the images. While this method is not likely to be replace your favorite image editing software, it does give you the ability to make basic edits and print photos directly from Windows Media Center. With a Media Center remote, you can even do all your edits from the comfort of your recliner. • phpbb specific forum page styles

    - by Ryan Max
I am using phpbb on a site for a client, and the client has requested that each different forum page have a different background color. Such functionality is not built into phpbb (from what I can tell), so how should I go about doing this? Can I modify the code of phpbb directly? My other thought was to use a js conditional statement, but seeing as the only difference on the forums page would be the page title, I don't know how I could format this.

  • Is there any appreciable difference between if and if-else?

    - by Drew
Given the following code snippets, is there any appreciable difference? public boolean foo(int input) { if(input > 10) { doStuff(); return true; } if(input == 0) { doOtherStuff(); return true; } return false; } vs. public boolean foo(int input) { if(input > 10) { doStuff(); return true; } else if(input == 0) { doOtherStuff(); return true; } else { return false; } } Or would the single exit principle be better here with this piece of code... public boolean foo(int input) { boolean toBeReturned = false; if(input > 10) { doStuff(); toBeReturned = true; } else if(input == 0) { doOtherStuff(); toBeReturned = true; } return toBeReturned; } Is there any perceptible performance difference? Do you feel one is more or less maintainable/readable than the others?

  • Could someone tell me if my C++ indent style is named? (example given)

    - by Maulrus
I'm learning C++. For me, my programming style is just what looks the best; it doesn't seem to follow the rules of any one particular style. Here's an example void f(int x){ //no space between close-paren and bracket if (!x){ cout << "x is non-zero\n"; } //closing bracket indented to the same level as the original statement } It's only slightly different for something like a class or a namespace: class myClass {}; //space between class name and bracket, otherwise the same as functions K&R style does uses that kind of bracketing for statements, but my style uses it for everything. I'd like to know if there's a name for it so I can say simply what my indent style is without having to explain using examples like these.

  • What is the most frustrating programming style you've encountered?

    - by JaredPar
When it comes to coding style I'm a pretty relaxed programmer. I'm not firmly dug into a particular coding style. I'd prefer a consistent overall style in a large code base but I'm not going to sweat every little detail of how the code is formatted. Still there are some coding styles that drive me crazy. No matter what I can't look at examples of these styles without reaching for a VIM buffer to "fix" the "problem". I can't help it. It's not even wrong, I just can't look at it for some reason. For instance the following comment style almost completely prevents me from actually being able to read the code. if (someConditional) // Comment goes here { other code } What's the most frustrating style you've encountered?

  • Python indentation in "empty lines"

    - by niscy
Which is preferred ("." indicating whitespace)? A) def foo(): x = 1 y = 2 .... if True: bar() B) def foo(): x = 1 y = 2 if True: bar() My intuition would be B (that's also what vim does for me), but I see people using A) all the time. Is it just because most of the editors out there are broken?

  • Server 2008 print server down / access denied

    - by johnnyb10
I have two Server 2008 servers (both running as VMs in VMware). One is a Full Installation, and the other is a Server Core installation. I just installed Print Services on both of them. In Print Management on the Full server, I added the Server Core print server (so now two print servers are listed in Print Management). However, the icon for my Server Core print server has a red, down-pointing arrow (indicating that it is down, I suppose). And when I right-click it and click Add Printer, I get a message saying that access is denied. Can someone tell me how to bring up or check on the status of the Server Core print server. Obviously, I'm somewhat of a noob with this stuff. Thanks in advance...

  • Keep printed documents on Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Server

    - by MadBoy
I've setup Windows 2008 R2 as print server. I have checked option Keep printed document option for all printers and it works fine. Users print their stuff and i can see what they are doing. Problem is everyone sees all documents that are getting printed which is not always the best idea. Is there a way to: Limit print jobs to be only seen by people who printed them and admins Limit print jobs to be only seen on server (from within Server Manager) and so print jobs dissapear when print job is done from user queue (but then admins are still able to see it and track what's printed and when for reporting purposes). Create some kind of access level list so that some people can see everything geting printed, some people see their print jobs and some people see nothing :-)
