• Blank displays after inactivity, mouse cursor not showing up

  I have a Windows 7 Enterprise x86 machine that is exhibiting some strange problems. After some inactivity (it varies how long it takes), when I come back to my computer, both of my monitors are black. The monitors are on, with a black display. Moving the mouse and pressing keys on the keyboard do not work. This happens at least once a day. When I first encountered the issue, I performed a hard shutdown and restarted the computer. About 10% of the time when I did this, the resolutions on my monitors were messed up. The native resolution on the primary monitor is 1600x900, and the native on my secondary is 1440x900. None of the widescreen resolutions would be present in the display properties. I had 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024. As a workaround to this issue, I've found that if I plug in my secondary monitor as the primary monitor, and leave the secondary unplugged, then Windows will start in 1024x768 on the secondary. Then, I can use Windows 7's "Detect" feature and it finds the 1440x900 resolution, and sets it. Then I have to connect the primary monitor to the secondary port and set it as the primary. Then I can switch the two cables, putting the primary into the primary, the secondary into the secondary. Then use the "Detect" feature again, and it finds the correct resolutions. Some time after performing the above, I discovered that when the screens were blanked, I could simply press "Control+Alt+Delete", type in my password, and everything comes up fine - except my mouse cursor. All applications and features work as intended, except there is no mouse cursor (the mouse actually works though...). I have the "Show location of pointer when I press CTRL key" option selected, so I can press CTRL and use my mouse as normal - but I have no actual cursor. When the computer is in this state, UAC is also not functional. Whenever a UAC prompt appears, the screens go black (the original symptoms) and I have to press Escape to exit UAC. Because of the above symptoms (the UAC black screen thing, etc) I beleive winlogon.exe may be the culprit. However, I have no idea how to fix it. I am unable to restart winlogon.exe due to the problems I am having with winlogon.exe (the UAC black screen) Looking for any ideas.... More information Windows 7 x86 Enterprise Domain environment (I have a secondary account with administrator rights) Dell Optiplex 960 Cannot perform "optional" windows updates due to an activation issue (I am testing a windows 7 image, and an activation infrastructure has not been created yet. However, this issue was happening before I was unable to perform windows update, and windows was up to date at the time Updated video card driver (as an attempt to fixing the resolution issue) Disabled all power saving options Please let me know what else you need to help me solve this issue!   Arch Linux shows a blinking cursor instead of a booting installer. I ran sudo dd if=archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso of=/dev/sdb1 and checked the MD5 sums. I tried to boot it on two different PCs and got the same result: instead of booting GRUB — or anything useful, for that matter — it just showed a blinking cursor at the top left corner of the screen. The machines became unresponsive to any kind of input, the flash drive LED didn't seem to blink or shiver at all and there seemed to be no other activity whatsoever. I tried using another flash drive, but the machine completely ignored it, booting Windows "normally."

• Seeing double-cursor in 'recursive RDP'

  I'm using a Virtual PC VM on my PC to connect to a remote PC using RDP over a VPN. It works just fine except that in the RDP session, I often see a double mouse cursor... I get a standard mouse-arrow and the context-specific cursor such as a caret or hourglass. It's not a big problem but rather annoying and I wondered if there's any way to fix it, or at least understand where it comes from? Is it because I'm effectively running one RDP session from inside another? My host PC runs W7, my local VM runs XP, and the remote PC access using RDP is W7. Thankyou for any help.

  I want to use cursor keys or cursor keys with a modifier like Ctrl to switch between screen buffers (e.g. C-a [arrow] or C-a C-[arrow]). So far I have tried settings like the ones below with no success. bind \224\115 prev bind \224\116 next bindkey -d ^[[1;5D prev bindkey -d ^[[1;5C next They are either ignored or behave unexpectedly (the second one). I am also not sure how to specify the keys. To get the characters, I either used C-v to quote them in bash, or tried to look-up on the Internet (e.g. http://ascii-table.com/ansi-escape-sequences.php). Any idea how I can achieve this key binding?

• Cursor and selection invisible if focus is lost

  "Latest" versions of Excel (I think it's since 2007) have a new added "feature" that if Excel windows loses focus, the cursor becomes invisible. Also coloring of headers is default, so it's impossible to locate cursor and/or selection as soon as I switch to other window. This annoys the hell out of me as it makes Excel almost unusable for most of tasks I need it for: keeping track of test cases while performing testing in another window. obtaining data somewhere else and porting it to Excel (I have never seen such behavior in other applications and can't even think of a justification for it.) Is is possible to turn this behavior off?

• Disappearing mouse cursor in Word, Notepad, Outlook

  I purchased a lenovo led monitor as a second monitor so I have dual screens now. Everything works great except all text programs make my cursor disappear on the new monitor. Everything works great on the old monitor but if I drag a text document to the new screen the cursor is invisible. Any ideas on what to try? Odd to me that it works on one and not the other so assuming it has something to do with the monitor but none of the settings seem to make a difference.

I can see at least three different ways of handling this set of data: Create a ref to a map of all the data: (def data (ref { :filename "filename.xml" :scroll [0 0] })) Create a map of refs to the individual data elements: (def datamap { :filename (ref "filename.xml") :scroll (ref [0 0]) })) Create a separate ref for each in the namespace: (def scroll (ref [0 0])) (def filename (ref "filename.xml")) Note: This data will be accessed concurrently, e.g. by background processing threads or the Swing event handling thread. However there probably isn't a need for consistent transactional updates of multiple elements. What would be your recommended approach and why?

• Windows 7, Black screen with cursor, impossible to logon

  First - I have gone through as many possible solutions I've found here and elsewhere. [Edit - to describe the issue in more detail, the PC appears to boot correctly, but instead of the logon screen, I have been getting a black screen WITH the pointer cursor, and it responds correctly to the mouse. Pressing CTL-ALT-DEL brings up the logon screen's background, but with no logon area nor any other content. This screen was at the full resolution before I uninstalled the graphics driver in safe-mode.] I also just ran a full up-to-date AVG scan from boot media. [Edit - the AVG scan, which was updated to today's virus signatures, found no issues at all.] So - steps I've tried: Safe Boot, Restore from before the issue - done, no help. Uninstall the graphics driver - done, now i have a 1024x768 fallback screen, still no way in. sfc /scannow - only doable from Safe boot obviously, but no change. [Edit - booting from restore media, performing a startup repair and...]Restore further back - restored to 2 days ago, and I'd had many reboots since then with no problem. Enable autologin to try to get beyond the login screen - done, doesn't work. It seems the best advice is complete reinstall, but I really don't want to do that because it'll take 3-4 days to add all the apps I use. Some key points to note - in both states - before and after removing the video driver, I always had a mouse cursor on the screen. CTL-ALT-DEL flashes up the login background, but no login info. I can (and often do) reinstall from scratch, but was at a fairly stable state before this, and would prefer not to. -Paul

  I have an xml document (XmlDocument) which looks like this... <stuff xmlns:n="hhtp://tempuri.com/"> </stuff> ... and a "fragment" (string) which looks like this <things> <thing n:type="info"> </thing> </things> I want to "inject" the fragment into the main document. How? (HINT: You can't use XmlDocumentFragment because the namespace 'n' isn't declared in the fragment, and the object model complains about this - throwing an 'unknown namespace' error even though the resultant document will be perfectly valid.)

The background image has lines so I need to put extra space between lines so that the background image and the lines fit nicely. But... if I use linespacingextra, it increase cursor as well. That means the fontsize will be smaller than the cursor size. Any idea??

• Why do people hate SQL cursors so much?

  I can understand wanting to avoid having to use a cursor due to the overhead and inconvenience, but it looks like there's some serious cursor-phobia-mania going on where people are going to great lengths to avoid having to use one for example, one question asked how to do something obviously trivial with a cursor and the accepted answer proposed using a common table expression (CTE) recursive query with a recursive custom function, even though this limits the number of rows that could be processed to 32 (due to recursive call limit in sql server). This strikes me as a terrible solution for system longevity, not to mention a tremendous effort just to avoid using a simple cursor. what is the reason for this level of insane hatred? has some 'noted authority' issued a fatwa against cursors? does some unspeakable evil lurk in the heart of cursors that corrupts the morals of the children or something? wiki question, more interested in the answer than the rep thanks in advance!   Totally confused here. I have a PARENT UIViewController that needs to pass an NSMutableArray to a CHILD UIViewController. I'm expecting it to be passed by reference so that changes made in the CHILD will be reflected in the PARENT and vice-versa. But that is not the case. Both have a property declared as .. @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *photos; Example: In PARENT: self.photos = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; ChildViewController *c = [[ChildViewController alloc] init ...]; c.photos = self.photos; ... ... ... In CHILD: [self.photos addObject:obj1]; [self.photos addObject:obj2]; NSLog(@"Count:%d", [self.photos count]) // Equals 2 as expected ... Back in PARENT: NSLog(@"Count:%d", [self.photos count]) // Equals 0 ... NOT EXPECTED I thought they'd both be accessing the same memory. Is this not the case? If it isn't ... how do I keep the two NSMutableArrays in sync?

  Hi All, I am having a very weird problem. I cannot for the life of me figure it out. The code for my page (at the moment), is this: <link rel="stylesheet" href="assets/css/default.css" /> But, why does it not load the stylesheet? When I move the stylesheet into the same location as the index.html page, and then change the references to it to point to the root dir, it works again? It never wants to work if the stylesheet is any more than 1 directory deep. Is this normal? Or should it still work?

  Can anyone give me a hand improving the performance of this cursor logic from SQL 2000. It runs great in SQl2005 and SQL2008, but takes at least 20 minutes to run in SQL 2000. BTW, I would never choose to use a cursor, and I didn't write this code, just trying to get it to run faster. Once I'm done adding statements inside the if-statement, how can I quickly move the cursor after the if-statement.   I am writing my PhD thesis (120+ pages) in latex, the deadline is approaching and I am struggling with layout problems. I am using the documentstyle book. I am posting both problems in this one thread because I am not sure if the solution might be related to both problems or not. Problems are: 1.) The page numbers are mostly located on the top-right of each page (this is correct and where I want them to be). However, only on the first page of chapters and on the first page of what I call "special chapters", the page number is located bottom-centered. With "special chapters" I mean: List of Contents, List of Figures, List of Tables, References, Index. My university will not accept the thesis like this. The page number must ALWAYS be top-right one each page, even if the page is the first page of a chapter or the first page of something like the List of Contents. How can I fix this? 2.) On the first page of chapters and "special chapters" (List of Contents...), the chapter title is located far too low on the page. This is the standard layout of LaTeX with documentstyle book I think. However, the chapter title must start at the very top of the page! I.e. the same height as the normal text on the pages that follow. I mean the chapter title, not the header. I.e., if there is a chapter called "Chapter 1 Dynamics of foobar under mechanical stress" then that text has to start from the top the page, but right now it starts several centimeters below the top. How can I fix this? Have tried all kinds of things to no effect, I'd be very thankful for a solution! Thanks.
