  • Reading RSS data with Linq to Xml

    - by hakanbilge
     Linq to Xml is the best method, I think, for querying, constructing and writing Xml data. In this article, I'll show how to read Rss data with this powerful Xml technique, Linq. Now, create a Website in Visual Studio, add a Textbox and a  [read more....]

  • Is this way the best solution to read and save images from Rss Feeds?

    - by Keyne
    Hi, I've build a "RSS Feed Reader" module to my application, and for every post with images in the content, I get the first that matches a specific size and then I save for future use as reference to the posts. When processing, everything works properly except when more then 10 images are saved at the same time (This value is variable). I got an 404 error after a while saving the images. Some images are saved, but not all of them. If I run the app in my local server, everything work as expected (using set_timeout(0) to avoid timeout errors). Currently my application is hosted at dreamhost and I'm using Zend Framework. I'm not sure if the problem is specif for Zend Framework applications, so I didn't put any tags about. I've had this problem another time with other projects hosted at dreamhost. They seems to limitate memory for operations like that. My question is: There is a better way to save images then this (maybe in background? a limited amount per operation?): require_once(APPLICATION_PATH . '/../library/simplehtmldom/simple_html_dom.php'); $TableFeeds = new Model_DbTable_Feeds(); $Feeds = $TableFeeds->fetchAll(); foreach($Feeds as $Feed) { $entries = Zend_Feed_Reader::import($Feed->link); $lastEntry = $this->getLastEntry($Feed->id); if($lastEntry) { $lastDate = new Zend_Date($lastEntry->created_at, Zend_Date::ISO_8601); } foreach ($entries as $entry) { if($lastDate) { if(strtotime($lastDate->get('y-M-d H:m:s')) >= strtotime($entry->getDateCreated()->get('y-M-d H:m:s'))) { break; } } $Category = new Model_DbTable_Categorias(); $availableCategories = $Category->getList('slug'); $categoria_id = false; foreach ($categories as $cat) { if(!empty($cat) && !$categoria_id) { $slug = Zf_Convert::slugfy($cat); if($availableCategories[$Feed->categoria_id] == $slug) { $categoria_id = $Feed->categoria_id; break; } if(in_array($slug,$availableCategories)) { $categoria_id = array_search($slug,$availableCategories); break; } } } if(!$categoria_id) { $categoria_id = $Feed->categoria_id; } // Cadastra a entrada $data = array( 'categoria_id' => $categoria_id, 'feed_id' => $Feed->id, 'titulo' => $entry->getTitle(), 'slug' => Zf_Convert::slugfy($entry->getTitle()), 'created_at' => $entry->getDateCreated()->get(Zend_Date::ISO_8601), 'link' => $entry->getLink(), 'html' => $entry->getContent(), 'tags' => $tags ); $entry_id = $this->insert($data); if($categoria_id == 2) { set_time_limit(0); $post_dom = str_get_dom($entry->getContent()); $img_tags = $post_dom->find('img'); $images = array(); foreach($img_tags as $image) { $images[] = $image->src; } if(count($images)) { $i = 0; $saved = false; while($images[$i] && !$saved) { $src = $images[$i]; $imagem = Zf_Image::create($src); $size = $imagem->getCurrentDimensions(); if($size['width'] >= 150 && $size['height'] >= 200) { $imagem->adaptiveResize(200,200); $imagem->save(PUBLIC_PATH . '/img/feeds/manchetes/' . $entry_id . '.jpg'); $saved = true; $this->update(array('imagemChamada' => 1),'id =' . $entry_id); } $i++; } } } } } }

  • Problem extracting text from RSS feeds

    - by Gautam
    Hi, I am new to the world of Ruby and Rails. I have seen rails cast 190 and I just started playing with it. I used selector gadget to find out the CSS and XPath I have the following code.. require 'rubygems' require 'nokogiri' require 'open-uri' url = "http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/rss" doc = Nokogiri::HTML(open(url)) doc.xpath('//a').each do |paragraph| puts paragraph.text end When I extracted text from a normal HTML page with css, I could get the extracted text on the console. But when I try to do the same either with CSS or XPath for the RSS Feed for the following URL mentioned in the code above, I dont get any output. How do you extract text from RSS feeds?? I also have another silly question. Is there a way to extract text from 2 different feeds and display it on the console something like url1 = "http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/rss" url2 = "http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/rss" Looking forward for your help and suggestions Thank You Gautam

  • RSS parsing last build Date. Fastest way to do so please.

    - by Paul
    Dim myRequest As System.Net.WebRequest = System.Net.WebRequest.Create(url) Dim myResponse As System.Net.WebResponse = myRequest.GetResponse() Dim rssStream As System.IO.Stream = myResponse.GetResponseStream() Dim rssDoc As New System.Xml.XmlDocument() Try rssDoc.Load(rssStream) Catch nosupport As NotSupportedException Throw nosupport End Try Dim rssItems As System.Xml.XmlNodeList = rssDoc.SelectNodes("rss/channel") 'For i As Integer = 0 To rssItems.Count - 1 Dim rssDetail As System.Xml.XmlNode rssDetail = rssItems.Item(0).SelectSingleNode("lastBuildDate") Folks this is what I'm using to parse an RSS feed for the last updated time. Is there a quicker way? Speed seems to be a bit slow on it as it pulls down the entire feed before parsing.

  • Proxy Issues with Javascript Cross Domain RSS Feed Parsing

    - by Amir
    This is my Javascript function which grabs an rss feed via the proxy script and then spits out the 5 latest rss items from the feed along with a link to my stylesheet: function getWidget (feed, limit) { if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { xhttp=new XMLHttpRequest() } else { xhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP") } xhttp.open("GET","http://MYSITE/proxy.php?url="+feed,false); xhttp.send(""); xmlDoc=xhttp.responseXML; var x = 1; var div = document.getElementById("div"); srdiv.innerHTML = '<link type="text/css" href="http://MYSITE/css/widget.css" rel="stylesheet" /><div id="rss-title"></div></h3><div id="items"></div><br /><br /><a href="http://MYSITE">Powered by MYSITE</a>'; document.body.appendChild(div); content=xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName("title"); thelink=xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName("link"); document.getElementByTagName("rss-title").innerHTML += content[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue; for (x=1;x<=limit;srx++) { y=x; y--; var shout = '<div class="item"><a href="'+thelink[y].childNodes[0].nodeValue+'">'+content[x].childNodes[0].nodeValue+'</a></div>'; document.getElementById("items").innerHTML += shout; } } Here is the the code from proxy.php: $session = curl_init($_GET['url']); // Open the Curl session curl_setopt($session, CURLOPT_HEADER, false); // Don't return HTTP headers curl_setopt($session, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true); // Do return the contents of the call $xml = curl_exec($session); // Make the call header("Content-Type: text/xml"); // Set the content type appropriately echo $xml; // Spit out the xml curl_close($session); // And close the session Now when I try to load this on any domain that's not my site nothing loads. I get no JS errors, but I in the Console tab in firebug I get "407 Proxy Authentication Required" So I'm not really sure how to make this work. The goal is to be able to grab the RSS feed, parse it to grab the titles and links and spit it out into some HTML on any website on the web. I"m basically making a simple RSS widget for my site's various RSS feeds. My Javascript is wack Also, I'm really a beginner with Javascript. I know jQuery pretty well, but I wasn't able to use it in this case, because this script will be embeded on any site and I can't really rely on the jQuery library. So I was decided to write some basic Javascript relying on the default XML parsing options available. Any suggestions here would be cool. Thanks! What's with the x and y They way my site creates RSS feeds is that the first title is actually the RSS feed title. The second title is the title of the first item. The first link is the link to the first item. So when using the javascript to get the title, I had to first grab the first title (which is the RSS title) and then start with the second title that being the first title of the item. Sorry for the confusion, but I don't think this is related to my issue. Just wanted to clarify my code.

  • How to manage feeds with subclassed object in Django 1.2?

    - by Matteo
    Hi, I'm trying to generate a feed rss from a model like this one, selecting all the Entry objects: from django.db import models from django.contrib.sites.models import Site from django.contrib.auth.models import User from imagekit.models import ImageModel import datetime class Entry(ImageModel): date_pub = models.DateTimeField(default=datetime.datetime.now) author = models.ForeignKey(User) via = models.URLField(blank=True) comments_allowed = models.BooleanField(default=True) icon = models.ImageField(upload_to='icon/',blank=True) class IKOptions: spec_module = 'journal.icon_specs' cache_dir = 'icon/resized' image_field = 'icon' class Post(Entry): title = models.CharField(max_length=200) description = models.TextField() slug = models.SlugField(unique=True) def __unicode__(self): return self.title class Photo(Entry): alt = models.CharField(max_length=200) description = models.TextField(blank=True) original = models.ImageField(upload_to='photo/') class IKOptions: spec_module = 'journal.photo_specs' cache_dir = 'photo/resized' image_field = 'original' def __unicode__(self): return self.alt class Quote(Entry): blockquote = models.TextField() cite = models.TextField(blank=True) def __unicode__(self): return self.blockquote When I use the render_to_response in my views I simply call: def get_journal_entries(request): entries = Entry.objects.all().order_by('-date_pub') return render_to_response('journal/entries.html', {'entries':entries}) And then I use a conditional template to render the right snippets of html: {% extends "base.html" %} {% block main %} <hr> {% for entry in entries %} {% if entry.post %}[...]{% endif %}[...] But I cannot do the same with the Feed Framework in django 1.2... Any suggestion, please?

  • Twitter Feeds in Umbraco using XSLT

    - by Vizioz Limited
    There are currently two packages tagged on the Umbraco forum that can be used to add a twitter feed to your website. I was playing around with "Twitter for Umbraco" by Warren Buckley and noticed a bug in the way it converted twitter @names to links, so I thought I would try and solve this using XSLT.It may also be useful for those of you using Darren Ferguson's "Feed Cache" package as the demo on Darren's site does not add links to the tweets. To use this XSLT you simple call the XSLT Template passing in your Twitter message:<xsl:call-template name="formaturl"> <xsl:with-param name="url" select="text"/></xsl:call-template>Then add the XSLT template to your XSLT macro (outside of the main template)<xsl:template name="formaturl"> <xsl:param name="twitterfeed"/> <xsl:variable name="transform-http" select="Exslt.ExsltRegularExpressions:replace($twitterfeed, '(http\:\/\/\S+)',ig,'<a href="$1">$1</a>')"/> <xsl:variable name="transform-https" select="Exslt.ExsltRegularExpressions:replace($transform-http, '(HTTps\:\/\/\S+)',ig,'<a href="$1">$1</a>')"/> <xsl:variable name="transform-AT" select="Exslt.ExsltRegularExpressions:replace($transform-https, '(^|\s)@(\w+)',ig,' <a href="http://www.twitter.com/$2">@$2</a>')"/> <xsl:variable name="transform-HASH" select="Exslt.ExsltRegularExpressions:replace($transform-AT, '(^|\s)#(\w+)',ig,' <a href="http://www.twitter.com/search?q=$2">#$2</a>')"/> <xsl:value-of select="$transform-HASH" disable-output-escaping="yes"/> </xsl:template>You should find that this now replaces all the @names, #names and URL's with links!

  • Using Teleriks new LINQ implementation to create OData feeds

    This week Telerik released a new LINQ implementation that is simple to use and produces domain models very fast. Built on top of the enterprise grade OpenAccess ORM, you can connect to any database that OpenAccess can connect to such as: SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Azure, VistaDB, etc. While this is a separate LINQ implementation from traditional OpenAccess Entites, you can use the visual designer without ever interacting with OpenAccess, however, you can always hook into the advanced ORM features like caching, fetch plan optimization, etc, if needed. Just to show off how easy our LINQ implementation is to use, I will walk you through building an OData feed using Data Services Update for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. (Memo to Microsoft: P-L-E-A-S-E hire someone from Apple to name your products.) How easy is it? If you have a fast machine, are skilled with the mouse, and type fast, you can do this in about 60 seconds via three easy steps. (I promise in about 2-3 weeks that you can do this in less then 30 seconds. Stay tuned for that.)  Step 1 (15-20 seconds): Building your Domain Model In your web project in Visual Studio, right click on the project and select Add|New Item and select Telerik OpenAccess Domain Model as your item template. Give the file a meaningful name as well. Select your database type (SQL Server, SQL Azure, Oracle, MySQL, VistaDB, etc) and build the connection string. If you already have a Visual Studio connection string already saved, this step is trivial.  Then select your tables, enter a name for your model and click Finish. In this case I connected to Northwind and selected only Customers, Orders, and Order Details.  I named my model NorthwindEntities and will use that in my DataService. Step 2 (20-25 seconds): Adding and Configuring your Data Service In your web project in Visual Studio, right click on the project and select Add|New Item and select ADO .NET Data Service as your item template and name your service. In the code behind for your Data Service you have to make three small changes. Add the name of your Telerik Domain Model (entered in Step 1) as the DataService name (shown on line 6 below as NorthwindEntities) and uncomment line 11 and add a * to show all entities. Optionally if you want to take advantage of the DataService 3.5 updates, add line 13 (and change IDataServiceConfiguration to DataServiceConfiguration in line 9.) 1: using System.Data.Services; 2: using System.Data.Services.Common; 3:   4: namespace Telerik.RLINQ.Astoria.Web 5: { 6: public class NorthwindService : DataService<NorthwindEntities> 7: { 8: //change the IDataServiceConfigurationto DataServiceConfiguration 9: public static void InitializeService(DataServiceConfiguration config) 10: { 11: config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("*", EntitySetRights. All); 12: //take advantage of the "Astoria3.5 Update" features 13: config.DataServiceBehavior.MaxProtocolVersion = DataServiceProtocolVersion.V2; 14: } 15: } 16: } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; }   Step 3 (~30 seconds): Adding the DataServiceKeys You now have to tell your data service what are the primary keys of each entity. To do this you have to create a new code file and create a few partial classes. If you type fast, use copy and paste from your first entity,  and use a refactoring productivity tool, you can add these 6-8 lines of code or so in about 30 seconds. This is the most tedious step, but dont worry, Ive bribed some of the developers and our next update will eliminate this step completely. Just create a partial class for each entity you have mapped and add the attribute [DataServiceKey] on top of it along with the keys field name. If you have any complex properties, you will need to make them a primitive type, as I do in line 15. Create this as a separate file, dont manipulate the generated data access classes in case you want to regenerate them again later (even thought that would be much faster.) 1: using System.Data.Services.Common; 2:   3: namespace Telerik.RLINQ.Astoria.Web 4: { 5: [DataServiceKey("CustomerID")] 6: public partial class Customer 7: { 8: } 9:   10: [DataServiceKey("OrderID")] 11: public partial class Order 12: { 13: } 14:   15: [DataServiceKey(new string[] { "OrderID", "ProductID" })] 16: public partial class OrderDetail 17: { 18: } 19:   20: } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; }   Done! Time to run the service. Now, lets run the service! Select the svc file and right click and say View in Browser. You will see your OData service and can interact with it in the browser. Now that you have an OData service set up, you can consume it in one of the many ways that OData is consumed: using LINQ, the Silverlight OData client, Excel PowerPivot, or PhP, etc. Happy Data Servicing! • May I use full-texted feed for my News Reader app?

    - by Mahdi Ghiasi
    I'm creating a news reader app. (Users will choose sources, but not the exact feed addresses. for example, they can choose Gizmodo but they will not see the exact url of Gizmodo's feed) Some of sources are giving partial feeds, and user must go to their website to read the complete article. My question is, May I make a fulltext version of their feed (for example, using this service) and use it instead of their feed in my News reader categories? Am I legally/ethically allowed to do this? What about using some other service like Readability? (Readability gives HTML page instead of feed as input, but anyway, output will be clean article without any advertises or such) Please note that some of these partial feeds may have some advertises inside, but the fulltext feed generators usually remove that advertises.

  • Extracting main article from webpage/feed. Is it legal/ethical?

    - by Mahdi Ghiasi
    There are some applications like Readability and Pocket, which are letting users to read the main content of web pages, in a clean interface or such. But the articles should be bookmarked from another application, or the web browser. However, I'm creating a news reader app (Zite and Flipboard are popular news reader apps), and I want to create a clean experience for users, so I want to show full content of articles inside my application. Some websites have fulltext feeds, and I'm using it. But about some other websites, which don't have full text feeds: I want to know, is it legal/ethical to use for example Readability API (Or maybe writing my own code for this) to show full text of articles inside my application?

  • Using jQuery to parse an RSS feed, having trouble in firefox and chrome.

    - by sjmarshy
    I used a jQuery library called jFeed to parse and display my blogs rss feed on my personal website. It worked perfectly well at first, but upon checking later it simply displays nothing, except in Internet Explorer, where it seems to work fine. After checking the javascript console using Firebug in Firefox, it shows an error in the 'XML' tab as follows: XML Parsing Error: no element found Location: moz-nullprincipal:{3f8a0c62-32b4-4f63-b69c- 9ef402b40b64} Line Number 1, Column 1: ^ Though I have no idea what to do with this information. Here is the code I used to get the rss feed and display it (it is almost exactly the same as the example provided by the jFeed website): jQuery.getFeed({ url: 'http://sammarshalldesign.co.uk/blog/wordpress/?feed=rss2', success: function(feed) { var html = ''; for(var i = 0; i < feed.items.length && i < 5; i++) { var item = feed.items[i]; html += '<h3>' + '<a href="' + item.link + '">' + item.title + '</a>' + '</h3>'; html += '<div>' + item.description + '</div>'; }//end for jQuery('#feed').append(html); }//end feed function });//end getfeed Any help would be really appreciated.

  • Easiest way to implement RSS reader on Google Android?

    - by user291888
    Hi guys, This is my first time on stack overflow, so I apologize if this question has been asked before, but is there an easy way to implement an RSS reader on the Google Android (API 1.5)? I'm searched far and wide with the code sources I know of, and I've only found one implementation which takes 6 different classes and doesn't seem to compile on the current Android SDK's. If I end up having to write my own, I'll be sure to post it here later on. Thanks a lot.

  • Can I integrate many sources into one RSS reader?

    - by BenAlabaster
    I'm looking to integrate a bunch of RSS/ATOM sources into a feed for our intranet. This is outside my usual realm of work so I've had very limited exposure to this. I'd like to integrate all the feeds into a single reader such that all the news items are in chronological release order. Is this doable? Do I need a special component? Or can I make the ASP.NET integrated components do all this simply enough?

  • What RSS/Atom standard to use for feed generation?

    - by fsb
    Reading online about this topic is confusing. Is there a way to cut around the history, politics and technicalities to answer the question: Which standard should I refer to when I write code to generate feeds? I want to use UTF-8 encoding, which may affect the choice. Otherwise I'm most interested in compatibility with a decent range of readers.
