• Running a dhcp server on windows 7 ultimate

  I'm trying to get my HP T5740 thin clients to connect to my local network without much success. I asked a question here but haven't got any response. I think that question should have been posted on serverfault instead. I was thinking that the problem seems to be that the thin clients aren't able to get an IP address when they are connected and I can't manually set it. So if I was to somehow set up a dhcp server on the network with my server that runs a 32 bit version of windows 7 ultimate edition. How do we set up a dhcp server in windows?

• Using Dropbox API instead of a FTP server for backing up DB/Source in your application.

  This is a small aplication scenario. Usually, when you have to do some backups of source code/database on your server, you use a second ftp server, a cronjob to tar.gz your db dumps and source files, and send this file to your ftp server from your application server. Dropbox created an API to use it's infrastrucutre. Since they provide 2gb for free accounts, I thought about being able to upload to it instead of a ftp server. So, if you do some freelance work, you can create a free account for each client and use this approach, maybe encrypting the files you send. You even gain a revision for each sent file, like a revison control system, for free, from the last 30 days. What do you think of this approach? Is it possible? And, more importantly: what are the security risks involved? (That's why I'm asking this on serverfault, since this POV from sysadmins will be more accurate). Thanks!

• Does Citrix XenServer have storage Migration [closed]

  I'm trying to find out. I can't seem to find a defenitive yes / no answers so I thought I'd ask the ServerFault community this simple question: Does XenServer (in any version) support Storage migration such as VMWare's Storage VMotion capability, or Hyper-V's storage migration ? I'm trying to do a comparative study of all platforms but I can't find a website (preff. Citrix supported or any other "legit" source) where it say's a defenitive yes or no. • RAID strategy - 8 1TB drives

  I'm setting up a backup storage device- This machine has Windows Server 2008, on a separate boot drive. It has 8x 1TB drives, and uses a hardware RAID card. My question is, which RAID configuration should I go for? Initially, I was going to go with RAID 5 across all 8 drives, however members on serverFault have advised against it. I was just wondering why? Some people have suggested 2 lots of RAID 5 configuration on 4 of the drives, then striping them... I want to maximise the storage space, as this is a backup unit - will store SQL backups, Acronis Images, files, etc... It won't be for public access, so the I/O won't be that high I wouldn't think.

• How to set up server to be accessed from mobile devices [closed]

  I need to set up a server that will eventually be accessed from an Android application. I don't have experience with how to go about this, but I've seen MySQL servers (Amazon EC2). I would need to store data on the server remotely (again, from a mobile device) and fetch it to display. What would be the best kind of server to use? I'm guessing I would only need around 50 GB of space. Is it possible to use a network drive and set that up as a remote server with an IP address? I would need to upload and extract data through java on Android. This is my first question on ServerFault, and I'm not sure if it's the appropriate forum. If not, please redirect me.

• Crunchbang asks for URIs to get build dependencies for php5 [closed]

  I'm trying to install PHP5, by compiling it myself. I'm doing this on Crunchbang Linux, version 11. Specifically, the version using the 3.2 kernel. Crunchbang 11 is based on Debian. This is a 64-bit Virtual machine, running on a 64-bit Win7 Professional. Using Virtualbox 4.2 This is my sources.list file: http://pastebin.com/rQJNwX7c When I try to do sudo apt-get build-dep php5, I get the following output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list I'm not sure what's going on here. Can anyone point out what's missing in my setup? Also, since I'm under 300 reputation on serverfault, I can't add the "crunchbang" tag.

• How to configure permissions for win2008 task running as Network Service to stop/start a service on different system?

  Well... title says it all, actually. We've got a Scheduled Task set up on a windows server 2003 box running as the Network Service, and the batch file it runs will invoke "sc" to stop and then start a service on another windows box, however sc reports: [SC] OpenService FAILED 5: Access is denied. Running the same batch file via the windows explorer has no issues, and my user account is part of the Administrators group so I believe this is why there are no issues when I try it manually. Is this a permissions thing I enable for Network Service on the first server? Or do I enable permissions for Network Service somehow on the target server? This question (http://serverfault.com/questions/19382/why-sc-query-fails-from-one-machine-but-works-from-another) touches on something similar, but I'm looking for enabling the Network Service to access the service via the scheduled task.

• Serving static content from cookie less domain and mod_deflate

  I have two domain. One domain with my main website and the other with js/css/etc.. files, static content. mod_deflate is enabled for both domains, but when i run ySlow in FireFox it says none of my static content is compressed. When i bring back the js or css file to my normal domain it gets compressed right. Only when its served from the other domain is it not compressed. Do i have to do some more configuration for this to work? I am using this line in my .htaccess file AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript text/css text/html text/xml text/plain application/x-httpd-php I tried to but the line in my httpd.conf file but it gives me the same results. PS. If this is more of a serverfault question i am sorry for this. But i see a lot of questions here concerning mod_deflate and ySlow

• Discussions on software architecture - Is StackOverflow appropriate place?

  Hi guys, I am using StackOverFlow for sometime, and its absolutely absolutely awesome for discussions on coding issues. But I don't see discussions on software architecture and designs. What I mean is, I don't see discussions where people put their design ideas and architecture of their software for discussions and ask for reviews and comments. So my question is, is StackOverFlow not the place for such discussions and is there any other place specialized for such discussions. (Like http://serverfault.com for system administrators or http://superuser.com). I am asking this question because, I am a beginner and am coding a piece of software for a course project and am too enthusiastic about it (and passionate too) and want to release it as OpenSource. And I want the code to be highly modular and highly extensible. But as a beginner I am not sure if the design I have comeup is good or not. So want to discuss it with people.   Hello StackOverflowers, If I make changes to .bashrc, how do I reload it without logging out and back in? I'm embarrassed that I don't know the answer to this question, since I do a fair amount of bash scripting. I'm also couldn't decide if I should post this on ServerFault, but since I do more scripting than sysadmin, I chose StackOverflow; go ahead and move it if you (the community) feel that SF would have been a better choice. Thanks in advance. I'm sure once I hear the answer I'll be saying "doh!   How to streamline/automate the configuration of Eclipse? Given N developers running a mixture of Ubuntu and Mac OS X, all with the same version of Eclipse, how to make sure that: Each developer, on top of his favourite "Available Software Sites" selection, has a common set of installation sources? Each developer has an easy (automated?) way of installing a base set of plug-ins? Each developer can just as easily install a custom plugin developed in-house and distributed over the local network? No automatically deployed plugins conflict with any others a developer might already be using? I would post this to serverfault.com if it wasn't that I am more interested in a "scripting" answer than a traditional "system management" solution... ;-)

• Installing Daemons

  Dear Stackoverflowers, A simple link would be nice for me to understand how to install my C++ program as a deamon in UNIX, now i know some will say this should be on SERVERFAULT but as far as i understand it i need the init.d shell script to actually create the start and stop for the daemons. But if you guys can show me a simple shell script for the daemon and the file directories every thing required is associated with, that would be great. I was going to do this http://www.linux.com/archive/feed/46892 but if you read the comments every one is moaning x( . P.S. ive already done the required code for C++ to run as a daemon i just need to know how to actually install it as a daemon. • How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7 in ASP.NET Caching application

  Pardon if this is more serverfault vs. stackoverflow. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size at ~10GB. Problem: The amount of memory the object consumes seems to be far in excess of our 10GB calculation. BIGGEST CONCERN: We can't seem to use over 60% of the 32GB in the server. What we've tried so far: In machine.config/system.web (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="80" In web.config/system.web/caching/cache (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): privateBytesLimit = "20000000000" (and 0, the default of course) percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit = "90" Environment: Windows 2008R2 x64 32GB RAM IIS7 Nothing seems to allow us to exceed the 60% value. • What is the easiest way to get an embedded upload progress bar using Ruby/Sinatra/Haml/Passenger/ngi

  I have a website where people can upload 30+mb of data in a single block, and I want to be able to show them the progress of their upload without causing the web page to become unresponsive, similar to how flash uploads work in gmail. There's this question here, but I don't know if that progress bar is embedded in the page or if it's using the browser's progress bar. I'm also a bit of a web newb, so I'm not sure if it's the 'easiest'. I asked the swfupload guys how to do this here, and the answer I got is 'this tool requires some knowledge to use it' without giving me much help in figuring out where to get started. I also asked this question on ServerFault, and got no response, so maybe that was the wrong place to ask. I'm all for learning new things and so forth, but there are a lot of potential pathways to take here. Where should I start, and what do I need to know to make everything work with sinatra, haml, ruby, passenger, and nginx? Thanks!

• How to benchmark apache/nginx setup

  I am planning to setup nginx as reverse proxy. I will have apache to deliver my dynamic content, and nginx will deliver the static content. My configuration i have now is just Apache with fastCGI. This gives me no configuration problems and runs great. After I have set up nginx I want to run some benchmarks to see if I really got some performance increases, else i will switch back. Does anyone know how I can benchmark this type of setup? Or maybe someone did this already and have some canned results, I will be glad to hear them. PS. I know this is more a serverfault type of question, but i have seen numerous posts about apache and nginx so i thought i give it a try

• Does this schema sound better suited for a document-oriented data store or relational?

  Disclaimer: let me know if this question is better suited for serverfault.com I want to store information on music, specifically: genres artists albums songs This information will be used in a web application, and I want people to be able to see all of the songs associated to an album, and albums associated to an artist, and artists associated to a genre. I'm currently using MySQL, but before I make a decision to switch I want to know: How easy is scaling horizontally? Is it easier to manage than an SQL based solution? Would the above data I want to store be too hard to do schema-free? When I think association, I immediately think RDBMSs; can data be stored in something like CouchDB but still have some kind of association as stated above?

The whitepapers of Windows Azure Platform say something like that: In its first release, the maximum size of a single database in SQL Azure Database is 10 gigabytes A few things are omitted in the technology’s first release, however, such as the SQL Common Language Runtime (CLR) and support for spatial data. (Microsoft says that both will be available in a future version.) I want to know that Microsoft had updated Windows Azure Platform and removed these limits or not? • Connecting two Windows XP with MSMQ

  This question is a cross between a developer and a server setup question. I asked on Serverfault but no answer yet. As a developer, I need to setup a test to see how MSMQ works between two machines, and I'm unclear what to do. I will use C# or BizTalk to do the read/write to/from the queues. I have MSMQ installed on two Windows XP computers. Can I configure them to pass messages back and forth, or do I need an MSMQ server in the middle? If I need an MSMQ server, does the normal MSMQ with Win2003 able to act as that? And then, how do I connect my Windows XP to that Windows 2003 server? Is it a) On screen admin dialog in the MSMQ plug-in to MMC, b) a config file, c) Active Directory, d) something else? Thanks, Neal Walters

• .odx Files in BizTalk 2009 (VS2008 IDE) Fail to open. "Unspecified Error"

  Okay, I'm not sure if this is an SO question, or a ServerFault question, but I figured I'd post here first. I have a BizTalk project which works like a champ for its original design. It's been deployed and it's working fine. Today, I went in to add some new fuctionality by modifying one of my orchestrations. When I attempted to open it, I got a message which simply stated: "The operation could not be completed. Unspecified error." I've closed the IDE and re-opened; I've restarted the machine; I've even allowed Microsoft Updates to run and restart the machine. Everything else opens just fine (.xsd files, .btms, etc.) so it appears only to be the orchestrations which are failing. Has anyone ever encountered a similar issue and resolved it (short of reinstalling BizTalk/VS, or blowing the orchs away and rebuilding)? Any help would be appreciated.

The drupal site is using imagecache and it requires either private files or clean urls. The issue I am having with clean urls is that requests to files are being rewritten into index.php as well. • Packet Crafting on a Mac

  I think (based on searching the forums), that NetCat is the best option, but wanted to hear if others are preferable. Anyone have good success with a packet-crafting tool (specifically on Mac)? I've tried HPing, but had some issues. I'm looking into NetCat ('nc' on mac) now, but it's not working as I had thought. Basically, I captured some packets that a remote control sends over a wifi network to turn lights on and off (using X10 controllers), and am looking for a way to replay them by crafting a TCP packet from the command line. I used Wireshark to sniff the traffic, so I know the package is: DEVICE -sendplc-"C4 DIM 10" I'm trying: echo 'DEVICE -sendplc-"C4 DIM 10"' nc 192.168.2.196 6003 but there's no response from the receiving system. • How reliable are URIs like /index.php/seo_path

  I noticed, that sometimes (especially where mod_rewrite is not available) this path scheme is used: http://host/path/index.php/clean_url_here --------------------------^ This seems to work, at least in Apache, where index.php is called, and one can query the /clean_url_here part via $_SERVER['PATH_INFO']. PHP even kind of advertises this feature. Also, e.g., the CodeIgniter framework uses this technique as default for their URLs. The question: How reliable is the technique? Are there situations, where Apache doesn't call index.php but tries to resolve the path? What about lighttpd, nginx, IIS, AOLServer? A ServerFault question? I think it's got more to do with using this feature inside PHP code. Therefore I ask here.

• Which tool / technology: System management for databases and dependent services

  A follow-up on this system management question: Since I probably will not get much feedback on serverfault I'll give it a try here. My main concern is to reflect the dependencies between the databases, services ans tasks/jobs I'll have to manage. Besides considering Powershell, I even thought about using MSBuild because it would allow for modeling dependencies and reuse configuration targets. In other words: What technology should I use to develop a flexible solution that will allow me to stop service A, B and C on machine D in the right order and disable task E on machine F when taking down database X?

• LAMP Stack with APC installed - WordPress Site - Is WP opcode being cached with APC?

  I have a LAMP stack with APC installed. I have a WordPress site on this server. Is WP taking advantage of the opcode caching? I have done no WP configurations. My understanding is that simply having APC installed means that all PHP code is being cached. If that is untrue, please point me to the direction where I can configure WP to take advantage of APC. Note: I thought about this as a ServerFault question, but since the solution to is code related I posted on Stackoverflow.
