• thttpd: Daemon exiting, I don't know why

  I run thttpd to serve some perl files. But for some reason the daemon is exiting every second or third day. Strangely it's always at 6.25 am.   I have to make sure that one process in server never goes down. So I'm think of cron vs daemon. Please provide me a good example of unix shell scripts that will run as daemon process. I'm trying to avoid the non sense of permission issue for crontab. Also there is not much good resource on the web for this. Will this daemon process automatically start during a server/system restart. If not how can I achieve this?

  I am running carbon-cache.py and carbon-aggregator.py using daemon tools.   I wrote a tool that sends automated mails to a couple of addresses. This worked for a couple of weeks. Now since yesterday I get Mailer-Daemon responses like this Hi. This is the qmail-send program at test.test2.net. I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out. testuser@domain.com: Connected to 123.456.789.10 but greeting failed. Remote host said: 554 foo.bar.com I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long. Does someone have an idea what I can do now?

  Can someone explain the difference between apache mod_wsgi in daemon mode and django fastcgi in threaded mode. They both use threads for concurrency I think. Supposing that I'm using nginx as front end to apache mod_wsgi. UPDATE: I'm comparing django built in fastcgi(./manage.py method=threaded maxchildren=15) and mod_wsgi in 'daemon' mode(WSGIDaemonProcess example threads=15). They both use threads and acquire GIL, am I right?

  I took a copy of a VM running a debian, just so that I can play around with it. I spin up the copy, but didn't give it any network connection to avoid conflict with the original one. However, when I turn the VM on, it seems to freeze after this startup message Starting Sambe daemons:nmbd smbd Starting PostgreSQL 8.4 database server: main Starting the Winbind daemon: winbind how do i fix this? I never get to the prompt to login. This vm does have a mount point that connects to a windows share folder.

• Skype on 12.04 x64 does not start even after purging and reinstalling it

  I am wondering if there's anyone here who managed to use Skype on 12.04. It used to work (ever since I first tried Ubuntu 10.04) flawlessly, but after upgrading to 12.04, it just doesn't start. If I start Skype from terminal, it just says Segmentation fault (core dumped). I tried to remove Skype and installed it from different locations: Skype website (did not install at all, "package error") From official Ubuntu repository (doesn't start at all, segmentation fault) From repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" (doesn't start at all, segmentation fault) Interesting thing: even if I remove / purge Skype from the system, it still shows up in Unity menu (of course doesn't start). Any help here?

• What's the correct way to stop a background process on Mac OS X?

  I have an application with 2 components: a desktop application that users interact with, and a background process that can be enabled from the desktop application. Once the background process is enabled, it will run as a user launch agent independently of the desktop app. However, what I'm wondering is what to do when the user disables the background process. At this point I want to stop the background process but I'm not sure what the best approach is. The 3 options that I see are: Use the 'kill' command. Direct, but not reliable and just seems somewhat "wrong". Use an NSMachPort to send an exit request from the desktop app to the background process. This is the best approach I've thought of but I've run into an implementation problem (I'll be posting this in a separate query) and I'd like to be sure that the approach is right before going much further. Something else??? Thank you in advance for any help/insight that you can offer.

My jump code is following if (jumpSprite.active==YES) { NSLog(@"Jump Sprite"); b2Vec2 locationWorld; locationWorld=b2Vec2(0.0f,4.0f); double force=ballBody->GetMass(); ballBody->ApplyLinearImpulse(force*locationWorld, ballBody->GetWorldCenter()); } If i remove else part then jump will perform complete but sprite body can not stop after release button.   I'm trying to make an object rotate up on the Y axis 90 degrees, then stop. I've got the rotating up bit working fine, it's getting it to stop once it hits 90.   I have an upstart script that will start a custom jetty server. When I do sudo start [myservice] nothing happens. Subsequently, sudo status [myservice] show it as: [myservice] start/killed, process 3586. Here's the script in /etc/init/[myservice].conf: description "[description]" author "[my name and email]" start on runlevel [2345] stop on runlevel [016] respawn expect fork script sudo -u www-data /path/to/grafserv-start.sh >> /tmp/upstart.log 2>&1 end-script And here is grafserv-start.sh: #!/bin/bash /usr/bin/java -Djetty.port=3070 -jar /path/to/grafserv/trunk/start.jar echo "Done starting GrafServ" I've tried redirecting the output of the script command to a tmp logfile, but that file is never created. When I start it, I just get a hang, until I ^C. Also, I tried running it with strace but that gave me a lot of stuff about sockets.

• Where can I find a list of 'Stop' words for Oracle fulltext search?

  I've a client testing the full text (example below) search on a new Oracle UCM site. The random text string they chose to test was 'test only'. Which failed; from my testing it seems 'only' is a reserved word, as it is never returned from a full text search (it is returned from metadata searches). I've spent the morning searching oracle.com and found this which seems pretty comprehensive, yet does not have 'only'. So my question is thus, is 'only' a reserved word. Where can I find a complete list of reserved words for Oracle full text search (10g)? Full text search string example; (<ftx>test only</ftx>) Update. I have done some more testing. Seems it ignores words that indicate places or times; only, some, until, when, while, where, there, here, near, that, who, about, this, them. Can anyone confirm this? I can't find this in on Oracle anywhere. Update 2. Post Answer I should have been looking for 'stop' words not 'reserved'. Updated the question title and tags to reflect.

  I hate putting shortcuts/files on desktop as well as crawling through "All Programs" menu any frequently (and I only pin some essential every-day applications to the task bar). So, I put all the programs I occasionally use to the start menu itself (above the automatic recently used programs section). But even though I've switched it to use small icons, I run out of vertical space in it (just about 16 shortcuts fit there at maximum).

  I have an issue with sendmail on my server (ubuntu 12.10) with php, mysql,and wordpress installed. Basically I want to create a contact form in my blog to receive emails from visitors directly into my gmail account but it doest work! I created a php file called testmail.php to recall it from the browser: <?php $to = '[email protected]'; $subbject = 'TEST MAIL'; $msg = 'test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test'; $isMailed = mail($to, $subbject, $msg, 'From:me <[email protected]>'); if($isMailed) echo 'mail has been send to: ' . $to; else echo 'mail has NOT been send..'; ?> But I dont receive anything! • Cannot start Postgres daemon after installing with Yum

  I was trying to install Postgres 9.1.4 on Fedora 17 using Yum. If I do: sudo yum install postgres-libs sudo yum install postgres sudo yum install postgis All the installs appear to complete successfully (i.e., no errors), but I cannot start the Postgres daemon using: service postgresql initdb Like the official Postgres download guide says to do (http://www.postgresql.org/download/linux/redhat/). The error says Unknown operation initdb. RPM tells me that it installed psql to /usr/bin/, which I confirmed. It turns out that only a few components installed correctly (psql, pg_dump, pg_configure, and a few others), but most are missing (e.g., pg_ctl and postgres). I've tried several different configurations and had several of my coworkers (with more linux experience than me) look at it, but so far nothing has worked. Two of them have also run into similar issues installing Postgres using apt-get on Ubuntu, which makes me think the rpm isn't doing its job. It seems the only solution to build it from source, which is more robust anyway, but of course it takes longer. I'm wondering, though, if anyone else has run into this issue and/or has successfully installed Postgres on either Fedora or Ubuntu using a package manager like yum or apt-get? Is the rpm broken?
