  • callback execution order in jQuery getJSON

    - by lau
I'm trying to implement a iGoogle like dashboard interface using widgets that get their content from other sites using JSONP calls. The problem is that if the first widget that calls the "$.ajax" takes 8 seconds to get the content back, it seems that the callbacks of the other widgets will only be called after the callback of the first widget gets executed. For the user experience, it would be better if the widgets could be displayed as soon as they get the content back from the remote sites, and not wait for those that were scheduled before to complete. Is there a way I can do that?

  • Does WCF always use SOAP to send information over your binding?

    - by SLC
I understand you can choose from a range of bindings, such as TCP, HTTP, HTTPS etc. Am I correct in thinking it always uses SOAP to send data over this connection? I am watching a guide to WCF and it is talking about how exceptions are serialized into SOAP and sent to the client. I would have thought that not all bindings would use SOAP to send data, so I am a bit confused about how it works. Although I understand the fundamentals of WCF, how to set up services and use a proxy on the client, it doesn't seem to have explained exactly how the data is packaged up to send. Perhaps the answer is obvious, that it just uses XML / SOAP, but I would love to know for sure!

  • Facebook Connect showPermissionDialog callback fires before user can even see the dialog

    - by Chris Hiester
I'm doing a Facebook Connect integration for a site and when the user logs in, I need to ask for some permissions so I use FB.Connect.showPermissionDialog. I use its callback to see if permissions were granted. If they are granted, I want to submit the form. Here's what my code looks like: $("#form3").live("submit", function() { FB.Connect.showPermissionDialog('email, offline_access', function(perms) { if (!perms) { location.href="http://www.mysite.com/logout/"; return false; } else { save_session(); } }); }); The problem is that the form submits before the user can even see the permission dialog. Has anyone seen this before?

  • showSettings callback in Flex?

    - by Jim Robert
I am pretty new to flex, so forgive me if this is an obvious question. Is there a way to open the Security.showSettings (flash.system.Security) with a callback? or at least to detect if it is currently open or not? My flex application is used for streaming audio, and is normally controlled by javascript, so I keep it hidden for normal use (via absolute positioning it off the page). When I need microphone access I need to make the flash settings dialog visible, which works fine, I move it into view and open the dialog. When the user closes it, I need to move it back off the screen so they don't see an empty flex app sitting there after they change their settings. thanks :)

  • Rails after_create callback can't access model's attributes

    - by tybro0103
I can't access my model's attributes in the after_create callback... seems like I should be able to right? controller: @dog = Dog.new(:color => 'brown', :gender => 'male') @dog.user_id = current_user.id @dog.save model: class Dog < ActiveRecord::Base def after_create logger.debug "[DOG CREATED] color:#{color} gender:#{gender} user:#{user_id}" end end console: (all seems well) >>Dog.last =>#<Dog id: 1, color: "brown", gender: "male", user_id: 1> log: (wtf!?) ... [DOG CREATED] color: gender:male user ... Some of my attributes show up and others don't! oh no! Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I've always been able to user after_create in such ways in the past. Note: The actual variable names and values I used were different, but the methods and code are the same.

  • jQuery.post dynamic data callback function

    - by FFish
    I have a script that requires quite e few seconds of processing, up to about minute. The script resizes an array of images, sharpens them and finally zips them up for the user to download. Now I need some sort of progress messages. I was thinking that with jQuery's .post() method the data from the callback function would progressively update, but that doesn't seem to work. In my example I am just using a loop to simulate my script: $(document).ready(function() { $('a.loop').click(function() { $.post('loop.php', {foo:"bar"}, function(data) { $("div").html(data); }); return false; }); }); loop.php: for ($i = 0; $i <= 100; $i++) { echo $i . "<br />"; } echo "done";

  • Save jQuery callback functions in a separate file

    - by Danny Herran
Probably I missed something, but lets say I have this: $('a.delete').click(function(){ resp=window.confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this?"); if(resp) return true; else return false; } Now, I want to save that callback function into a separate js file, because I will use it in several pages. My logic told me to do this: $('a.del').click(delete_element()); Having my js file like this: function delete_element(){ resp=window.confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this?"); if(resp) return true; else return false; } This doesn't work. Everytime my page loads, it displays the confirm window, even if I haven't clicked the link. It is clear that my logic failed this time. What am I missing?

  • .NET Conditional Callback on a type.

    - by Mahesh
I have a stock price which changes by nature all the time. And, there will be many users who wants to buy that stock. Let's say that the stock price is started at 10 and let's say, 30 people bid for 10.98, 20 people bid for 7.45, 100 people bid for 8.99. During the day, the stock price can touch any of these values, and if that happens, I want to execute all the orders for users who quoted that price. Technically, I am storing in a List. Whenever the price changes, I am checking against all the values in the list and executing those that satisfy the quoted price. Class Bids { string stockname; double quote; } Is there any better alternative way to callback the satisfied items in the list rather than checking all the items whenever there is a change?? If storing in a list is not right way of doing it, let me know the best way.

  • CodeIgniter Validation in Library does not accept callback.

    - by Lukas Oppermann
Hey guys, my problem is the following: I am writing a login library. This library has a function _validation() and this uses the validation library to validate the data. With using normal validation methods it works just fine, but using a callback function just does not work. It is not called. I call it like this. $this->CI->form_validation->set_rules('user', 'Username', 'required|callback__check_user'); The functions name is _check_user and it uses the username _check_user($user). The function itself works fine and I can also call it in the class ($this-_check_user('username')) with a working result. I am guessing, there might be a problem because I am not workin in a controller so I have a CI instance $this-CI instead of just the original instance $this- Does anyone have a clue how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

  • jQuery Plugin: Adding Callback functionality

    - by dclowd9901
I'm trying to give my plugin callback functionality, and I'd like for it to operate in a somewhat traditional way: myPlugin({options}, function() { /* code to execute */ }); or myPlugin({options}, anotherFunction()); How do I handle that parameter in the code? Is it treated as one full entity? I'm pretty sure I know where I'd place the executory code, but how do I get the code to execute? I can't seem to find a lot of literature on the topic, so thanks in advance for your help.

  • jQuery Supersized Plugin callback when slideshow finishd

    - by Nic Hubbard
I am using the Supersized jQuery plugin which makes images fullscreen and also implements a slideshow. Currently, this plugin does not have a callback for when the slideshow is finished, rather, it just continually repeats. Is there a way that I could trigger a function after the last slide is shown? Currently, I have it working to trigger a function when the last slide STARTS to be shown, as I have a setInterval which checks for the "last" class on the slideshow images. But, this runs the function when that last slide starts, not when it is finished. Does anyone have ideas on how I could accomplish this?

  • What elegant method callback design should be used ?

    - by ereOn
Hi, I'm surprised this question wasn't asked before on SO (well, at least I couldn't find it). Have you ever designed a method-callback pattern (something like a "pointer" to a class method) in C++ and, if so, how did you do it ? I know a method is just a regular function with some hidden this parameter to serve as a context and I have a pretty simple design in mind. However, since things are often more complex than they seem to, I wonder how our C++ gurus would implement this, preferably in an elegant and standard way. All suggestions are welcome !

  • How can i make a callback to accordion after form validation, to show errors

    - by Esger
    I have a very long form, which is divided into fieldsets which in turn are being shown or hidden, using the harmonica from jQuery UI. I am using form validation from jQuery as well, all newest versions. After submission and validation the user is redirected to the first erroneous field by $('myForm').validate(); But the containing harmonica fieldset has to be showed/opened with $('myForm').accordion('activate', index); as well, in order to show the field to the user. So how can I open the appropriate accordion fieldset after the form has been tried to submit? Is there a way to do it in a callback function after $('myForm').validate();

  • Event handling C# / Registering a callback

    - by Jeff Dahmer
Events can only return void and recieve object sender/eventargs right? If so then craptastic.... how can I pass a function pointer to another obj, like: public bool ACallBackFunc(int n) { return n > 0; } public void RegisterCallback(Something s) { s.GiveCallBack(this.ACallBackFunc); } Something::GiveCallBack(Action? funcPtr) I tried using Action, but I need it to return some value and Actions can only return void. Also, we do not know what kind of a callback we will be recieving; it could return anything and have any params! Reflection will have to be used somehow I reckon.

  • Ajax, Callback, postback and Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_beginRequest

    - by user338262
Hi, I have a user control which encapsulates a NumericUpDownExtender. This UserControl implements the interface ICallbackEventHandler, because I want that when a user changes the value of the textbox associated a custom event to be raised in the server. By the other hand each time an async postback is done I shoe a message of loading and disable the whole screen. This works perfect when something is changed in for example an UpdatePanel through this lines of code: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_beginRequest( function (sender, args) { var modalPopupBehavior = $find('programmaticSavingLoadingModalPopupBehavior'); modalPopupBehavior.show(); } ); The UserControl is placed inside a detailsview which is inside an UpdatePanel in an aspx. When the custom event is raised I want another textbox in the aspx to change its value. So far, When I click on the UpDownExtender, it goes correctly to the server and raises the custom event, and the new value of the textbox is assigned in the server. but it is not changed in the browser. I suspect that the problem is the callback, since I have the same architecture for a UserControl with an AutoCompleteExtender which implement IPostbackEventHandler and it works. Any clues how can I solve this here to make the UpDownNumericExtender user control to work like the AutComplete one? This is the code of the user control and the parent: using System; using System.Web.UI; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Text; namespace Corp.UserControls { [Themeable(true)] public partial class CustomNumericUpDown : CorpNumericUpDown, ICallbackEventHandler { protected void Page_PreRender(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!Page.IsPostBack) { currentInstanceNumber = CorpAjaxControlToolkitUserControl.getNextInstanceNumber(); } registerControl(this.HFNumericUpDown.ClientID, currentInstanceNumber); string strCallServer = "NumericUpDownCallServer" + currentInstanceNumber.ToString(); // If this function is not written the callback to get the disponibilidadCliente doesn't work if (!Page.ClientScript.IsClientScriptBlockRegistered("ReceiveServerDataNumericUpDown")) { StringBuilder str = new StringBuilder(); str.Append("function ReceiveServerDataNumericUpDown(arg, context) {}").AppendLine(); Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(typeof(CorpNumericUpDown), "ReceiveServerDataNumericUpDown", str.ToString(), true); } nudeNumericUpDownExtender.BehaviorID = "NumericUpDownEx" + currentInstanceNumber.ToString(); ClientScriptManager cm = Page.ClientScript; String cbReference = cm.GetCallbackEventReference(this, "arg", "ReceiveServerDataNumericUpDown", ""); String callbackScript = "function " + strCallServer + "(arg, context)" + Environment.NewLine + "{" + Environment.NewLine + cbReference + ";" + Environment.NewLine + "}" + Environment.NewLine; cm.RegisterClientScriptBlock(typeof(CustomNumericUpDown), strCallServer, callbackScript, true); base.Page_PreRender(sender,e); } [System.ComponentModel.Browsable(true)] [System.ComponentModel.Bindable(true)] public Int64 Value { get { return (string.IsNullOrEmpty(HFNumericUpDown.Value) ? Int64.Parse("1") : Int64.Parse(HFNumericUpDown.Value)); } set { HFNumericUpDown.Value = value.ToString(); //txtAutoCompleteCliente_AutoCompleteExtender.ContextKey = value.ToString(); // TODO: Change the text of the textbox } } [System.ComponentModel.Browsable(true)] [System.ComponentModel.Bindable(true)] [Description("The text of the numeric up down")] public string Text { get { return txtNumericUpDown.Text; } set { txtNumericUpDown.Text = value; } } public delegate void NumericUpDownChangedHandler(object sender, NumericUpDownChangedArgs e); public event NumericUpDownChangedHandler numericUpDownEvent; [System.ComponentModel.Browsable(true)] [System.ComponentModel.Bindable(true)] [System.ComponentModel.Description("Raised after the number has been increased or decreased")] protected virtual void OnNumericUpDownEvent(object sender, NumericUpDownChangedArgs e) { if (numericUpDownEvent != null) //check to see if anyone has attached to the event numericUpDownEvent(this, e); } #region ICallbackEventHandler Members public string GetCallbackResult() { return "";//throw new NotImplementedException(); } public void RaiseCallbackEvent(string eventArgument) { NumericUpDownChangedArgs nudca = new NumericUpDownChangedArgs(long.Parse(eventArgument)); OnNumericUpDownEvent(this, nudca); } #endregion } /// <summary> /// Class that adds the prestamoList to the event /// </summary> public class NumericUpDownChangedArgs : System.EventArgs { /// <summary> /// The current selected value. /// </summary> public long Value { get; private set; } public NumericUpDownChangedArgs(long value) { Value = value; } } } using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; namespace Corp { /// <summary> /// Summary description for CorpAjaxControlToolkitUserControl /// </summary> public class CorpNumericUpDown : CorpAjaxControlToolkitUserControl { private Int16 _currentInstanceNumber; // This variable hold the instanceNumber assignated at first place. public short currentInstanceNumber { get { return _currentInstanceNumber; } set { _currentInstanceNumber = value; } } protected void Page_PreRender(object sender, EventArgs e) { const string strOnChange = "OnChange"; const string strCallServer = "NumericUpDownCallServer"; StringBuilder str = new StringBuilder(); foreach (KeyValuePair<String, Int16> control in controlsToRegister) { str.Append("function ").Append(strOnChange + control.Value).Append("(sender, eventArgs) ").AppendLine(); str.Append("{").AppendLine(); str.Append(" if (sender) {").AppendLine(); str.Append(" var hfield = document.getElementById('").Append(control.Key).Append("');").AppendLine(); str.Append(" if (hfield.value != eventArgs) {").AppendLine(); str.Append(" hfield.value = eventArgs;").AppendLine(); str.Append(" ").Append(strCallServer + control.Value).Append("(eventArgs, eventArgs);").AppendLine(); str.Append(" }").AppendLine(); str.Append(" }").AppendLine(); str.Append("}").AppendLine(); Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(typeof(CorpNumericUpDown), Guid.NewGuid().ToString(), str.ToString(), true); } str = new StringBuilder(); foreach (KeyValuePair<String, Int16> control in controlsToRegister) { str.Append(" funcsPageLoad[funcsPageLoad.length] = function() { $find('NumericUpDownEx" + control.Value + "').add_currentChanged(").Append(strOnChange + control.Value).Append(");};").AppendLine(); str.Append(" funcsPageUnLoad[funcsPageUnLoad.length] = function() { $find('NumericUpDownEx" + control.Value + "').remove_currentChanged(").Append(strOnChange + control.Value).Append(");};").AppendLine(); } Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(typeof(CorpNumericUpDown), Guid.NewGuid().ToString(), str.ToString(), true); } } } and to create the loading view I use this: //The beginRequest event is raised before the processing of an asynchronous postback starts and the postback is sent to the server. You can use this event to call custom script to set a request header or to start an animation that notifies the user that the postback is being processed. Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_beginRequest( function (sender, args) { var modalPopupBehavior = $find('programmaticSavingLoadingModalPopupBehavior'); modalPopupBehavior.show(); } ); //The endRequest event is raised after an asynchronous postback is finished and control has been returned to the browser. You can use this event to provide a notification to users or to log errors. Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_endRequest( function (sender, arg) { var modalPopupBehavior = $find('programmaticSavingLoadingModalPopupBehavior'); modalPopupBehavior.hide(); } ); Thanks in advance! • Returning a Value From the Bit.ly JS API Callback

    - by mtorbin
Hey all, I am attempting to turn this "one shot" script into something more extensible. The problem is that I cannot figure out how to get the callback function to set a value outside of itself (please note that references to the Bit.ly API and the prototype.js frame work which are required have been left out due to login and apiKey information): CURRENTLY WORKING CODE var setShortUrl = function(data) { var resultOBJ, myURL; for(x in data.results){resultOBJ = data.results[x];} for(key in resultOBJ){if(key == "shortUrl"){myURL = resultOBJ[key];}} alert(myURL); } BitlyClient.shorten('http://www.thinkgeek.com', 'setShortUrl'); PROPOSED CHANGES var setShortUrl = function(data) { var resultOBJ, myURL; for(x in data.results){resultOBJ = data.results[x];} for(key in resultOBJ){if(key == "shortUrl"){myURL = resultOBJ[key];}} alert(myURL); return myURL; } var myTEST = BitlyClient.shorten('http://www.thinkgeek.com', 'setShortUrl'); alert(myTEST); As you can see this doesn't work the way I'm am expecting. If I could get a pointer in the right direction it would be most appreciated. Thanks, MT

  • Javascript callback with AJAX + jQuery

    - by Fred
Hey! I have this jQuery code (function () { function load_page (pagename) { $.ajax({ url: "/backend/index.php/frontend/pull_page/", type: "POST", data: {page: pagename}, success: function (json) { var parsed = $.parseJSON(json); console.log(parsed); return parsed; }, error: function (error) { $('#content').html('Sorry, there was an error: <br>' + error); return false; } }); } ... var json = load_page(page); console.log(json); if (json == false) { $('body').fadeIn(); } else { document.title = json.pagename + ' | The Other Half | freddum.com'; $("#content").html(json.content); $('#header-navigation-ul a:Contains('+page+')').addClass('nav-selected'); $('body').fadeIn(); } })(); and, guessed it, it doesn't work. The AJAX fires fine, the server returns valid JSON but the console.log(json); returns undefined and the js crashes when it gets to json.pagename. The first console.log(parsed) also returns good data so it's just a problem with the return (I think). I knew I was clutching at straws and would be extremely if this worked, but it doesn't. To be honest, I don't know how to program callback functions for this situation. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Set a callback function to a new window in javascript

    - by SztupY
Is there an easy way to set a "callback" function to a new window that is opened in javascript? I'd like to run a function of the parent from the new window, but I want the parent to be able to set the name of this particular function (so it shouldn't be hardcoded in the new windows page). For example in the parent I have: function DoSomething { alert('Something'); } ... <input type="button" onClick="OpenNewWindow(linktonewwindow,DoSomething);" /> And in the child window I want to: <input type="button" onClick="RunCallbackFunction();" /> The question is how to create this OpenNewWindow and RunCallbackFunction functions. I though about sending the function's name as a query parameter to the new window (where the server side script generates the appropriate function calls in the generated child's HTML), which works, but I was thinking whether there is another, or better way to accomplish this, maybe something that doesn't even require server side tinkering. Pure javascript, server side solutions and jQuery (or other frameworks) are all welcomed.

  • Sending data in a GTK Callback

    - by snostorm
How can I send data through a GTK callback? I've Googled, and with the information I found created this: #include <gtk/gtk.h> #include <stdio.h> void button_clicked( GtkWidget *widget, GdkEvent *event, gchar *data); int main( int argc, char *argv[]){ GtkWidget *window; GtkWidget *button; gtk_init (&argc, &argv); window = gtk_window_new(GTK_WINDOW_TOPLEVEL); button = gtk_button_new_with_label("Go!"); gtk_container_add(GTK_CONTAINER(window), button); g_signal_connect_swapped(G_OBJECT(window), "destroy", G_CALLBACK(gtk_main_quit), NULL); g_signal_connect(G_OBJECT(button), "clicked", G_CALLBACK(button_clicked),"test" ); gtk_widget_show(window); gtk_widget_show(button); gtk_main(); return 0; } void button_clicked( GtkWidget *widget, GdkEvent *event, gchar *data){ printf("%s \n", (gchar *) data); return; } But it just Segfaults when I press the button. What is the right way to do this?

  • Linq to SQl over WCF Timesout after several calls

    - by Redeemed1
I have a L2S Repository class which instantiates the L2S DataContext in its constructor. The repository is instantiated at run time (using Unity) in a service hosted in IIS with WCF. When I run up the client MVC applicaton the calls to the backend WCF service work for a while and then timeout. I suspected perhaps a database issue as I was depending on IIS garbage collection to dispose of unused DataContext instances in the IIS host but when I checked the characteristics of the problem I notice the following: The client makes the call to WCF but the WCF service does not respond. Next, the client times out Some time later (several minutes) the service actually executes the request by instantiating the repository and servicing the call. I have checked both client and server traces logs and only the client shows WCF errors (the timeout error). Where should I look? Is it something in WCF or is L2S possibly blocking with unfreed conenctions, resources etc.? Many thanks Brian

  • WCF - Compact Framework - Pull data from mobile client

    - by jagse
Hello guys, I want to communicate xml serialized objects from the server to the client and the other way arround. Now it is (probably) easy to invoke methods from a mobile client (compact framework) using WCF, but is there a way so that the server can invoke methods on the client side or some other way to pull data from the client? I know that callback contracts are not available in the compact framework as you can see here: http://blogs.msdn.com/andrewarnottms/archive/2007/09/13/calling-wcf-services-from-netcf-3-5-using-compact-wcf-and-netcfsvcutil-exe.aspx Originally I thought of socket programming and of developing this by myself, then someone here mentioned WCF. But it seems like WCF only would work in a non mobile environment as I need callbacks. Anyone can help me with this? Is it possible to develop a two way communication with a desktop server and multiple mobile clients using WCF, or will I have to do socket programming? Thanks for any advice or any kind of help!

  • Asynchronous Silverlight WCF callback

    - by Matt
I've created my own WCF service and I've successfully been able to talk to it via my Silverlight client. I ran into an interesting problem on my asynchronous callbacks though. When my callback is invoked, I can't update any UI controls with the dreaded invalid cross thread access Here's what my callback function looks like private void GetTimeCallBack( object sender, Talk.ClientBase<IService>.ClientEventArgs e ) { lblDisplay.Text = e.Object.ToString(); } A quick google search showed me that I have to do this instead. private void GetTimeCallBack( object sender, Talk.ClientBase<IService>.ClientEventArgs e ) { Dispatcher.BeginInvoke( () => lblDisplay.Text = e.Object.ToString() ); } Now everything works fine, but I wasn't expecting my callback to be running on a different thread. Will I always have to use the Dispatcher class in order to modify anything within my class or is this just limited to UI elements? I've not familiar with the Dispatcher class at all so I'm looking to understand it more.

  • Allowing Access to HttpContext in WCF REST Services

    - by Rick Strahl
If you’re building WCF REST Services you may find that WCF’s OperationContext, which provides some amount of access to Http headers on inbound and outbound messages, is pretty limited in that it doesn’t provide access to everything and sometimes in a not so convenient manner. For example accessing query string parameters explicitly is pretty painful: [OperationContract] [WebGet] public string HelloWorld() { var properties = OperationContext.Current.IncomingMessageProperties; var property = properties[HttpRequestMessageProperty.Name] as HttpRequestMessageProperty; string queryString = property.QueryString; var name = StringUtils.GetUrlEncodedKey(queryString,"Name"); return "Hello World " + name; } And that doesn’t account for the logic in GetUrlEncodedKey to retrieve the querystring value. It’s a heck of a lot easier to just do this: [OperationContract] [WebGet] public string HelloWorld() { var name = HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["Name"] ?? string.Empty; return "Hello World " + name; } Ok, so if you follow the REST guidelines for WCF REST you shouldn’t have to rely on reading query string parameters manually but instead rely on routing logic, but you know what: WCF REST is a PITA anyway and anything to make things a little easier is welcome. To enable the second scenario there are a couple of steps that you have to take on your service implementation and the configuration file. Add aspNetCompatibiltyEnabled in web.config Fist you need to configure the hosting environment to support ASP.NET when running WCF Service requests. This ensures that the ASP.NET pipeline is fired up and configured for every incoming request. <system.serviceModel>     <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true" multipleSiteBindingsEnabled="true" /> </system.serviceModel> Markup your Service Implementation with AspNetCompatibilityRequirements Attribute Next you have to mark up the Service Implementation – not the contract if you’re using a separate interface!!! – with the AspNetCompatibilityRequirements attribute: [ServiceContract(Namespace = "RateTestService")] [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] public class RestRateTestProxyService Typically you’ll want to use Allowed as the preferred option. The other options are NotAllowed and Required. Allowed will let the service run if the web.config attribute is not set. Required has to have it set. All these settings determine whether an ASP.NET host AppDomain is used for requests. Once Allowed or Required has been set on the implemented class you can make use of the ASP.NET HttpContext object. When I allow for ASP.NET compatibility in my WCF services I typically add a property that exposes the Context and Request objects a little more conveniently: public HttpContext Context { get { return HttpContext.Current; } } public HttpRequest Request { get { return HttpContext.Current.Request; } } While you can also access the Response object and write raw data to it and manipulate headers THAT is probably not such a good idea as both your code and WCF will end up writing into the output stream. However it might be useful in some situations where you need to take over output generation completely and return something completely custom. Remember though that WCF REST DOES actually support that as well with Stream responses that essentially allow you to return any kind of data to the client so using Response should really never be necessary. Should you or shouldn’t you? WCF purists will tell you never to muck with the platform specific features or the underlying protocol, and if you can avoid it you definitely should avoid it. Querystring management in particular can be handled largely with Url Routing, but there are exceptions of course. Try to use what WCF natively provides – if possible as it makes the code more portable. For example, if you do enable ASP.NET Compatibility you won’t be able to self host a WCF REST service. At the same time realize that especially in WCF REST there are number of big holes or access to some features are a royal pain and so it’s not unreasonable to access the HttpContext directly especially if it’s only for read-only access. Since everything in REST works of URLS and the HTTP protocol more control and easier access to HTTP features is a key requirement to building flexible services. It looks like vNext of the WCF REST stuff will feature many improvements along these lines with much deeper native HTTP support that is often so useful in REST applications along with much more extensibility that allows for customization of the inputs and outputs as data goes through the request pipeline. I’m looking forward to this stuff as WCF REST as it exists today still is a royal pain (in fact I’m struggling with a mysterious version conflict/crashing error on my machine that I have not been able to resolve – grrrr…).© Rick Strahl, West Wind Technologies, 2005-2011Posted in ASP.NET  AJAX  WCF

  • Is it possible to force the WCF test client to accept a self-signed certificate?

    - by Lawrence Johnston
I have a WCF web service running in IIS 7 using a self-signed certificate (it's a proof of concept to make sure this is the route I want to go). It's required to use SSL. Is it possible to use the WCF Test Client to debug this service without needing a non-self-signed certificate? When I try I get this error: Error: Cannot obtain Metadata from https:///Service1.svc If this is a Windows (R) Communication Foundation service to which you have access, please check that you have enabled metadata publishing at the specified address. For help enabling metadata publishing, please refer to the MSDN documentation at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65455.WS-Metadata Exchange Error URI: https:///Service1.svc Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'https:///Service1.svc'.
