• htaccess Redirect - First Segment to PHP File, Second Segment as Parameter

  My htaccess redirect knowledge is somewhat weak, so I was hoping to get some help here. I currently have the following redirect, which works well: # remove trailing slash RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ /$1 [L,R=301] # redirect to clean URL RewriteCond /%{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9_-\s]+)$ /$1.php This takes a URL like www.mysite.com/about to www.mysite.com/about.php Now I would like to keep this behavior, but add parameters (if applicable), as such: www.mysite.com/about = www.mysite.com/about.php www.mysite.com/gallery/1 = www.mysite.com/gallery.php?id=1 If possible, I might like to expand this system to 2 or more parameters, as such: www.mysite.com/gallery/1/2 = www.mysite.com/gallery.php?id=1&section=2 So the pattern would be: First URL segment redirects to a PHP file (Optionally) the second segment gets added as the id parameter (Optionally) the third segment gets added as the section parameter

• Best way to order menu items injected by an IoC/plugin Framework

  One of the common things I've seen done in applications built on IoC/plugin frameworks is to add commands to menus or toolbars from the dynamically loaded plugins. For example, the application's default plugins supply actions like "New, Open, Save" that show up in the context menu for a certain item in the workspace. A new plugin may add "Mail, Post, Encrypt" commands, but where do those commands show up in relation to "New, Open, Save"? How can the application that is loading components through IoC impose order on the items that get injected? Does it require metadata from the plugins that give a hint on how to group or order the items? Does it use a config file of previously known menu names (or ids) to define the order (seems a little weak to me)? Or are "unknown" plugins treated as second class citizens and always get dumped into sub menus? Something I've never even imagined (which I'm hoping to see in the answers)

  Hi all, I want to have my own progress bar in .net compact framework, instead of default wait cursor. I have tried with a form, having only a progress bar, and showing and hiding the form when I want to show some background activity running, but that does not update the progress bar. I have found out that it needs to be on different thread. I am quite weak at threads, I cant get it working. Please help me out. Thanks in advance.

• Chrome SSL Security Issue under Windows systems?

  The Fortify.net website allows you to check what SSL Encryption key is used by your browser. I gave it a try with the browsers I've on my machine and these are the results Fedora 9 Firefox 3.0.8 = AES cipher, 256-bit key Chrome 4.0.249.30 = AES cipher, 256-bit key Windows XP SP3 IE 6.0.2x = RC4 cipher, 128-bit key Firefox = AES cipher, 256-bit key Chrome 4.1.249.1042 (42199) = RC4 cipher, 128-bit key .... WHAT!!?!! Chrome is using RC4 128-bit (as IE6 does) that is well known as been very weak! Chrome under Unix works fine... I'm wondering how is this possible? Do you have this issue or is there a way to change the default key to be AES 256bit? I'm using Chrome as the main browser under Windows and I'm really considering to switch back to Firefox

  Somebody told me that allocating with malloc is not secure anymore, I'm not a C/C++ guru but I've made some stuff with malloc and C/C++. Does anyone know about what risks I'm into?   hi to all! i am suffering with an unexpected behavior,here is problem definitation i have applications communicating on LAN via UDP protocol, i am reading the Ip and Port no from a text file, initially the Ip and Port is working nicely but after some time the Ip that is a char array is corrupted and it takes garbage values, also the file writing is effected by this i mean the values that are in ip array are also written in text file that is written by the same application, i cant understand what is the problem. sorry for weak english. thanx in advance.

  I apologize if this is a trivial question or my understanding of rails is weak. I have 2 actions in my controller, index and refine_data. index fetches and displays all the data from a database table. refine_data weeds out unwanted data using regex and returns a subset of the data. Controller looks like: def index Result.paginate :per_page => 5, :page => params[:page], :order => 'created_at DESC' end def refine_data results = Result.all new_results = get_subset(results) redirect_to :action => 'index' end I would like to redirect the refine_data action to the same view (index) with new_results. As new_results are not from the database table (or model), how do I go about constructing my paginate?

• How to evaluate "enterprise" platforms?

  Hi all, I'm tasked with evaluating an "enterprise" platform for the next-gen version of a product. We're currently considering two "types" of platforms - RAD (workflow engine, integrated UI, small cores of "technology plugins" to the workflows, automatic persisting of state...) like SalesForce.com / Service-Now.com and "cloud based" (EC2 / AppEngine...). While I have a few ideas on where to start, I'd like your opinions - how would you evaluate platforms for an enterprise suite of products? What factors would you consider? How would you eliminate weak options quickly enough to be able to concentrate on the few strong ones? Also interesting is how would you compare enterprise RAD (proven technology, quick to develop - but tends to look "the same as the competition") to cloud-based technology (lots of "buzz", not that many competitors - easy to justify to management, but probably lacking (?) enterprise tools and experience). As said before - I have a few ideas, but would like to see some answers before I post mine so I wouldn't drive the discussion to a specific place. RB.

• Is there any real world reason to use throw ex?

  In C#, throw ex is almost always wrong, as it resets the stack trace. I just wonder, is there any real world use for this? The only reason I can think of is to hide internals of your closed library, but that's a really weak reason. Apart from that, I've never encountered in the real world. Edit: I do mean throw ex, as in throwing the exact same exception that was caught but with an empty stacktrace, as in doing it exactly wrong. I know that throw ex has to exist as a language construct to allow throwing a different exception (throw new DifferentException("ex as innerException", ex)) and was just wondering if there is ever a situration where a throw ex is not wrong.

• Is the scope of what Xcode's "Build and Analyze" will catch as a leak supposed to be this limited?

  It doesn't care about this: NSString* leaker() { return [[NSString alloc] init]; } I thought it would have been smart enough to check if any code paths could call that function without releasing its return value (I wouldn't normally code this way, I'm just testing the analyzer). It reports this as a leak: NSString* leaker() { NSString* s = [[NSString alloc] init]; [s retain]; return s; } but NOT this: NSString* leaker() { NSString* s = [[NSString alloc] init]; // [s retain]; return s; } which seems particularly weak to me. Does it only analyze within the local scope? If the tool can't pick up on things like this, how can I expect it to pick up on actual mistakes that I might make?

• streaming to correct network interface

  I have IP cam that supports RTSP streaming. It's connected to router with 2 network cards with IP1 and IP2 addresses. I make 2 connections to IP cam by IP1 and IP2 addresses from the same IP and I need to receive corresponding streams thru correct network card, but both streams (RTP over UDP) go thru IP1. How this can be resolved? I don't know if RTSP server binds UDP sockets to corresponding IP and I don't know what IP stack is in IP cam (weak end system or strong end system). I haven't found anything interesting in router configuration. As I understand, routing table cannot help me cos I'm connected from the same IP, is it right? Also Sorry for incomplete info but it's all I have at the moment. Thanks for your time.

  I have a company that would like to bring me in to serve me an hour long exam. No resources other than a pencil and paper. I really couldn't get any sort of feedback on the type of exam (implementation or generic) beside that it would test a few specific areas. Have you done anything like this? What sort of questions did they ask? What's a good way to prepare? I'll probably go in a couple weeks before school starts back up. A time sensitive exam structure is a weak point for me, so what should I absolutely focus down on? If they like the exam, that's when I'll get a face-to-face meeting.   When I ask a question here, the tool tips for the question returned by the auto search given the first little bit of the question, but a decent percentage of them don't give any text that is any more useful for understanding the question than the title. Does anyone have an idea about how to make a filter to trim out useless bits of a question? My first idea is to trim any leading sentences that contain only words in some list (for instance, stop words, plus words from the title, plus words from the SO corpus that have very weak correlation with tags, that is that are equally likely to occur in any question regardless of it's tags)

  Ideally something as intuitive as basecamp, with good usability and accessibility. The best I've seen is huddle.net but it's still weak in several areas. Must have: Projects - ability to add people & tasks and schedule tasks to people Calendar - showing when people are busy or available Role based access - Admins and non-admins History - ability to look back at all history Anyone seen a product that's worth a look? Clarification: Must be hosted i.e. not require my own hardware or IT staff I'm looking for an app to schedule people with specific tasks at specific times and monitor the outcomes. I'm already using Mingle (for stories), Basecamp (to run the business) and Exceptional (to track bugs). I'm not looking for a bug-tracking system or a story management application (I already looked at VersionOne, but chose Mingle due to it's nicer UI) My response to the answer being auto-selected: I still don't feel the answer (chosen for me) is the correct one. It's a useful list but little more, and doesn't provide the solution I was seeking.

• MS VC++ 6 class wizard

  Ok, I'm developing an application that has been in pretty much continous development over the last 16 years, from C in DOS, through various flavours of C++ and now is largely based around C++ with MFC and StingRay GUIs and various other SDKs. While I use VS 2005 for the release builds, I still use MSVC 6 for much of the GUI building, simply because ClassWizard is so much quicker in this environment than the weak equivalent tools that followed. Note that I am using ClassWizard to automatically generate code for my own user defined types (see Custom DDXs) and I like to add a lot of member variables and methods in one go. Creating them one at a time as per later versions of Visual Studio for me is a big backward step. At the same time, working with multiple IDEs is also a pain. My question is in two parts; Is there any way of getting ClassWizard to work is VS 2005 or VS 2008? Is there any drop in replacement, or alternative IDE, that provides similar levels of productivty for old C++ hacks such as myself?

• Learn Cloud Computing – It’s Time

  Last week, I gave an in-house presentation on cloud computing.  I walked through an overview of cloud computing – characteristics (on demand, elastic, fully managed by provider), why are we interested (virtualization, distributed computing, increased access to high-speed internet, weak economy), various types (public, private, virtual private cloud) and services models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.)  Though numerous providers have emerged in the cloud computing space, the presentation focused on Amazon, Google and Microsoft offerings and provided an overview of their platforms, costs, data tier technologies, management and security.  One of the biggest talking points was why developers should consider the cloud as part of their deployment strategy: You only have to pay for what you consume You will be well-positioned for one time event provisioning You will reap the benefits of automated growth and scalable technologies For the record: having deployed dozens of applications on various platforms over the years, pricing tends to be the biggest customer concern.  Yes, scalability is a customer consideration, too, but it comes in distant second.  Boy do I hope you’re still reading… You may be thinking, “Cloud computing is well and good and it sounds catchy, but should I bother?  After all, it’s just another technology bundle which I’m supposed to ramp up on because it’s the latest thing, right?”  Well, my clients used to be 100% reliant upon me to find adequate hosting for them.  Now I find they are often aware of cloud services and some come to me with the “possibility” that deploying to the cloud is the best solution for them.  It’s like the patient who walks into the doctor’s office with their diagnosis and treatment already in mind thanks to the handful of Internet searches they performed earlier that day.  You know what?  The customer may be correct about the cloud. • Type Casting variables in PHP: Is there a practical example?

  PHP, as most of us know, has weak typing. For those who don't, PHP.net says: PHP does not require (or support) explicit type definition in variable declaration; a variable's type is determined by the context in which the variable is used. Love it or hate it, PHP re-casts variables on-the-fly. So, the following code is valid: $var = "10"; $value = 10 + $var; var_dump($value); // int(20) PHP also alows you to explicitly cast a variable, like so: $var = "10"; $value = 10 + $var; $value = (string)$value; var_dump($value); // string(2) "20" That's all cool... but, for the life of me, I cannot conceive of a practical reason for doing this. I don't have a problem with strong typing in languages that support it, like Java. That's fine, and I completely understand it. Also, I'm aware of—and fully understand the usefulness of—type hinting in function parameters. The problem I have with type casting is explained by the above quote. If PHP can swap types at-will, it can do so even after you force cast a type; and it can do so on-the-fly when you need a certain type in an operation. That makes the following valid: $var = "10"; $value = (int)$var; $value = $value . ' TaDa!'; var_dump($value); // string(8) "10 TaDa!" So what's the point? Can anyone show me a practical application or example of type casting—one that would fail if type casting were not involved? I ask this here instead of SO because I figure practicality is too subjective. Edit in response to Chris' comment Take this theoretical example of a world where user-defined type casting makes sense in PHP: You force cast variable $foo as int -- (int)$foo. You attempt to store a string value in the variable $foo. PHP throws an exception!! <--- That would make sense. Suddenly the reason for user defined type casting exists! The fact that PHP will switch things around as needed makes the point of user defined type casting vague. For example, the following two code samples are equivalent: // example 1 $foo = 0; $foo = (string)$foo; $foo = '# of Reasons for the programmer to type cast $foo as a string: ' . $foo; // example 2 $foo = 0; $foo = (int)$foo; $foo = '# of Reasons for the programmer to type cast $foo as a string: ' . $foo;
