  Hi, I'm new to Windows device driver programming. I know that certain operations can only be performed at IRQL PASSIVE_LEVEL. For example, Microsoft have this sample code of how to write to a file from a kernel driver: if (KeGetCurrentIrql() != PASSIVE_LEVEL) return STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_STATE; Status = ZwCreateFile(...); My question is this: What is preventing the IRQL from being raised after the KeGetCurrentIrql() check above? Say a context or thread swithch occurs, couldn't the IRQL suddenly be DISPATCH_LEVEL when it gets back to my driver which would then result in a system crash? If this is NOT possible then why not just check the IRQL in the DriverEntry function and be done with it once for all?

• Cheap windows driver signing for 64 bit Windows 7

  I need to install the libusb-win32 driver on Windows 7 64 bit machines. This driver is open source so it is not digitally signed so I want to do this my self but I wonder if this can be done WITHOUT paying lot of money. Is it possible to use a certificate which is NOT signed by Verisign or GlobalSign? Maybe self-signed or by using StartSSL instead? And if yes, how do I do it? According to this howto I have to use a "cross-certificate" (And there are only six available on the Microsoft list and most of them are for CAs which are no longer active) I don't care if the user is confronted with a warning message. I can even accept if the user has to install a special CA certificate first. I only require that the driver runs without manually disabling the signature check on each windows startup.

  Is there a way to programmatically install device driver silently without cat file and without connecting the device on Windows Xp? I'm using DriverPackageInstall function from Windows Driver Kit. And I can install driver only if device is attached. In other case I get an error: ERROR_NO_SUCH_DEVINST. But that method works fine with Windows Vista. Another problem is warning dialog that asks user to continue or stop installation because cat file is missing . It shows on both OSes. Any ideas?

  Ok, i have a simple database engine (its a proprietary product written in vb6) for one of my applications... i'd like to create an ODBC driver for it so i can use some of my other applications (which require a database) with my database engine rather than microsoft sql (which they are currently using).... • Removed Xserver driver. ubuntu doesnt start. what should i Do?

  im new on ubuntu , i intalled it ( dual booted with windows 7) i was customizing it, but when i tried to run compiz it said that missing glx or something like that in the screen, i realized that the driver that i was not using wasnt the gefroce on so i went to nvidia downloaded the correct version for my graphic ( geforce gtm 525m) when y run the .run file it told me that i was using xserver and that i cant install this driver with the xserver installed. i search for information of how to remove or disable xserver i found one. in this web site --http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-tiphow-to-removeinstall-and-reconfigure-xorg-without-reinstalling-ubuntu.html when i run the command , after that i tried to instal the geforce on, doesnt work so i remember windows that you must reboot after a driver unintallation or intallation so i reboot, them ubuntu doesnto load, it show the ubuntu whit the five dots like or 1-2 sec and them i get a black screen ( not the red-black of ubutntu ) so why i should do. i dont want to re install i dont have a cd and my usb is a little damaged so please if you could help me

• GameKit peer to peer wifi without wireless router?

  Hi all! Thanks in advance for any thoughts about this. I'm looking for a way to do realtime inter-app communication in iOS via wi-fi (I need about 150 ft range and don't think bluetooth offers this) and wonder about the peer-to-peer connectivity offered by GameKit which, apparently offers both bluetooth and wi-fi connectivity. My question is: must participating devices be members of an available wireless network (via a wireless router) or is this connectivity truly peer-to-peer requiring no router? I understand Wi-fi Direct is coming and would likely be an option. Just wondering if I can do this utilizing services available in iOS today. Thanks! Tim

• What port does OpenLink ODBC Driver use?

  I use Avaya Reporting Services and OpenLink ODBC Drivers for db connection. I know that it uses port 5000 for handshaking but after that I believe it uses an random port for communication. I want to deploy my application and it will communicate with the client's system in their datacenter. They are asking what ports should they open on their firewalls. I can't obviously give them a range above 50,000 that I know OpenLink ODBC Drivers use. Can someone tell me what port should I tell my client to open?

  I have a pretty generic 64bit driver based on bulkusb.sys in WDK. It's been working for years with an embedded program, but now it is needed to work on Vista 64. From all the documentation I've tried to look through there doesn't seem to be anything affecting it, except compiling it for the 64bit environment, and yet when I compile it with the AMD64 build environment, I get "driver not intended for this platform" error message when it's trying to open the sys. What could be the solution for this?

• Error with varchar(max) column when using net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver

  Hi I have a MS SQL database running (MS SQL 2005) and am connecting to it via the net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver. The query works fine for all the columns except one that is a varchar(max). Any ideas how to get around this issues? I am using the jdbc driver to run a data index into a SOLR implementation. (I do not control the database, so the first prize solution would be where I can tweak the SQL command to get the desired results) Thanks

I can't have the driver communicate with a local usermode application which then communicates with the remote application because that wouldn't work for what I'm doing.   I have an Intel corporation core processor integrated graphics controller (rev 18), and I am trying to get a proprietary driver for my graphics card so I can play Amnesia from the Humble Bundle. I am a female that can easily follow directions but doesn't know much about Linux yet. If you give me precise directions, I will follow them so you can help me fix the problem. I would really appreciate it! My laptop is a Dell n7010. Additional info: I believe that it is the graphics card that is causing Amnesia to crash, but I am unsure. I have tried running it on the lowest possible settings, and it crashes after the first loading screen. :( Also, I installed via the Ubuntu Software Center after purchasing the Humble Bundle. I have not tried the other games yet.

  Recently, i began developing a driver of an embedded device running linux. Until now i have only read about linux internals. Having no prior experience in driver devlopment, i am finding it a tad difficult to land my first step. I have downloaded the kernel source-code (v2.6.32). I have read (skimped) Linux Device Drivers (3e) I read a few related posts here on StackOverflow. I understand that linux has a "monolithic" approach. I have built kernel (included existing driver in menuconfig etc.) I know the basics of kconfig and makefile files so that should not be a problem. Can someone describe the structure (i.e. the inter-links) of the various folders in the kernel-source code. In other words given a source-code file, which other files would it refer to for related code (The "#include"-s provide a partial idea) Could someone please help me in getting a better idea? Any help will be greatly appreciated Thank You.

• 13.10 - Weird WiFi connection problems - WMP300N - Broadcom BCM4321

  Just installed 13.10 on my desktop and I really like it. After having problems with getting the wifi to work, I installed it connected to the internet with an ethernet cable and added in the 3rd party software and updates as per the installation procedure. After installation was completed, I saw the wifi icon in the upper right hand corner, but it was not seeing any wifi networks. Some Googling brought me to use the 'Additional Drivers' application. It found the WMP300N Broadcom BDM4321 based pci wifi card and installed the proprietary Broadcom STA wireless driver, which may have been installed before. I'm not sure. Here is the weird part: when I start my system, wifi seems to be in some sort of suspended state where the system sees that the card exists but the card will not detect any wifi networks. It will work after booting once I 'Additional Drivers' application and then start FireFox. I know it seems weird, but this is the process I've got down to get the card to recognize wifi networks. After those applications are open for a few seconds, the card starts to function like normal (although maintaining the wifi connection is problem but most likely a seperate issue). The reason this is a problem is because this is supposed to just be a headless box managed through SSH.   The capabilities of the touchpad on the new ASUS UX31 Zenbook leave much to be desired. The touchpad works like a mouse, but no vertical or horizontal scrolling. I contacted a developer who works for Sentelic. He said: Unless driver does some non-trivial works based on coordinates output, I'm afraid that it won't have scrolling support at this moment. and Windows driver does scrolling in driver where current Linux driver doesn't have such feature, yet. Additionaly, given that the resource is quite limited at this moment, I'm afraid that there is no firm schedule for scrolling support in Linux driver. How can we get this driver to do some "non-trivial works based on coordinate output"?

• Detach a filter driver from certain drivers?

  The driver for my laptop's keyboard has a kernel-mode filter driver from Synaptics (SynTP.sys) attached. Is it possible to detach the SynTP.sys filter driver from my keyboard's driver, without detaching it from my Touchpad's driver? This Microsoft Support page explains how to completely disable a filter driver, but my touchpad requires SynTP.sys as well. I'm trying to do this is because the Synaptics driver disables my touchpad when I type. (Explained fully in this question: Use touchpad while "typing"?.) Since I don't have a solution to that problem, I figured removing the filter driver from the keyboard could prevent the Synaptics driver from detecting key strokes, thus stopping it from disabling the touchpad.
