• Office 2010 & Windows 7 - 'File' is currently in use. Try again later

  The issue: when saving a document from either Word, Excel or PowerPoint 2010, every so often it will show the message 'file' is currently in use. Try again later. We started our rollout of Windows 7 beginning of this year, and this issue was infrequent, but is now affecting enough people to be a problem. Usually, if you clear the alert, then save again, it works fine, though only in Word or Excel. Annoyingly, PowerPoint has a bad habit of changing the file to read-only after the error. So the only choice is to save to a new file name. The issue seems to only happen to files in the user's My Documents, which is a redirection folder from their HomeShare. The HomeShares are spread across 3 different file servers, 2 Windows 2003 and 1 Windows 2008 R2. Has anyone seen this issue and know how to fix it?

• problem linking vba modules in MS Access 2007

  I am upgrading a database system from Access 2000 db to Access 2007, which communicates with several chemistry measuring devices(pH meter, scale, etc) via an RS 232 serial port. The first db consists of several modules containing vba code that enables the communications with the ports, as well as supports the code behind the forms in the second db. The user, or lab tech, navigates through the forms in the second db to interact with the lab devices, and also to generate the reports which display the info. from the devices. The reports are also part of the second db. The code works in Access 2000, but once I convert it to 2007, the code in the second db cannot find the function calls in the first db that dictate the progression from screen to screen. I have tried importing the modules into the second db, and I have tried linking them, but it still doesn't work. The error message is #438: "Object doesn't support this property or method." Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Here is the code for the first function that is not being called correctly: Description: ' This routine is used to return to the calling form and close the active form. • Are there any program for showing tooltip via OCR

  Edited for clarification based on comments: At work we have an old developed program where I need to navigate on a very long dropdown list only with numbered codes. To select the correct code, I manually look at an excel list that shows the code and the name each codes corresponds with. To make matters worse, it is not possible to type in the dropdown box (only first character is recognized when typing) So my question is: Are there any program which can show the text from a predefined list, when i mouseover the various possibilities in the dropdown list? The purpose would be to be able to identify the name which corresponds to each code, without having to look at the excel list. Thanks in advance!

• Should I go to school and get my degree in computer science?

  I'll try and keep this short and simple. I've always enjoyed programming and I've been doing it since high school. Right after I graduated from high school (2002), I opted to skip college because I was offered a software engineer position. I quit after a couple of years later to team up on various startup companies. However, most of them did not launch as well as expected. But it honestly did not matter to me because I've learned so much from that experience. So fast forwarding to today, now turned 25, I need a job due to this tough economic climate. Looking on Craigslist, a lot of the listings require computer science degrees. It's evident now that programming is what I want to do because I seem to never get enough of it. But just the thought of having to push 2 years without attending any real computer class for an Associates at age 25 is very, very discouraging. And the thought of having to learn from basic (Hello WOOOOORRLLLD) just does not seem exciting. I guess I have 3 questions to wrap this up: Should I just suck it up and go back to school while working at McDonalds at age 25? Is there a way where I can just skip all the boring stuff and just get tested with what I know? From your experience, how many jobs use computer science degrees as prerequisites? Or am I screwed and better pray that my next startup will be the next big thing?

• Is there a way to get x-mouse-type scrolling under the cursor for child windows within one program window?

  I've been messing with X-mouse setups, to enable scrolling for whatever is under the cursor, regardless of whether it has the focus or not. I've found several ways to get this to work between various 'parent' windows (Win7's built-in mouse options, WizMouse, etc), but I've found nothing that will do the same thing with (for example) several child windows with spreadsheets, open at the same time in one parent Excel window. I have the spreadsheets set up so that two are visible in the window at the same time, but I always have to click on either one to scroll it up and down. I'd love to be able to scroll these just by moving the mouse and doing the scroll, without the extra focus-change-click. I am not a big fan of running separate parent windows for each spreadsheet, which I realize would be something of a workaround. I'd rather keep the single parent Excel window, but still have X-mouse functionality within it. Anyone know of any way to achieve this? I'd call it "XMouse for Child Windows".

• Porting VB6 app to VB.Net: Can anyone ballpark how much effort this is?

  In 2002 I did a pretty large VB6 app for a client. It used a lot of UserControls and a 3rd party menu control (for putting icons next to menu names). It had dynamically "splittable" panels, TreeViews with multi-state checkboxes, etc. A very rich UI. My total time on the project was about 500 hours, which the client graciously let me spread over a whole month. (Yeah, it was that kind of job.) They were very happy, though, and they paid the bill on time with no argument. So after having no contact with them for years, they suddenly call and wonder if I can update the app to .Net for them. My initial reaction is just to decline, since I don't use VB.Net. And having read a bunch of posts on SO about the difficulties of porting, etc., etc., I'm even more inclined to decline, so to speak. Still, before I tell them no I am interested in roughly quantifying the effort it would take. I would love to hear from anyone who has done this kind of thing and has a feel for how much work it is. Was it: Significantly less than the effort you used on the original? Somewhat less than the effort you used on the original? The same as the effort you used on the original? More? A lot more? Please only respond if you have actually done this kind of port. And the answer doesn't have to be exact, since I really am only trying to ballpark this. My feeling is that the effort will be at least as much as it took for the original, if not more. But I could be wrong. Thanks for any help.

I've always done this sort of thing with Excel, and with newer versions, to me (this is emphasized "to me", so this doesn't get taken as an Excel rant post), it's becoming troublesome. Are there applications like this (specialized for one thing they do good and relatively simple ... I'm not interested in CFD visualization packages in here.) for Windows ? All suggestions welcomed.

• How does Office 2008 for Mac store its Recent items?

  I don't have access to Office 2008, but require the information for a project I'm working on. I'm mainly interested in Word, Excel and Powerpoint. This is the information I have gathered so far... The preference file is: ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.office.plist The property keys take the form: 2008\File Aliases\{APP}{n} 2008\MRU Access Date\{APP}{n} where {APP} represents an Office application, and {n} represents a number starting from 0. The applications are represented by the following values: MSWD (Word) XCEL (Excel) What value represents PowerPoint? In the property list I've seen, the numbers represented by {n} range from 0-10 (11 items). Is 10 the limit? or is this unrestrained? Finally, I've noticed that Office 2011 does not add its Recent Items to the Apple System menu: Apple > Recent Items Is Office 2008 the same?

  Greetings. I am trying to learn Java and Swing (today is my first day). I have been able to set up a menu in my test application. but the items occupy very little space (they are narrow). How do I go about extendng the amount of space it uses? I am studying Teach Yourself Java 6 in 21 Days 5th Ed, Java Swing, 2nd Edition, 2002 and Teach Yourself Programming With Java In 24 Hours, 4th Edition (2005) but none of them shed any light on this issue. • Zipcodes in CSV Generation

  When exporting to CSV format, then opening in a spreadsheet program like Excel zipcodes that start with a zero or zeroes have the preceding zeros stripped off. Obviously it is because the spreadsheet sees that column as integers and preceding zeros in integers are useless. A quick and dirty trick to force Excel (hopefully you are using OpenOffice) to display the full zipcode, we wrap it in double quotes and put an equal sign in front of it, to force it to be a string like this: $zipcode = 00123; $data = '="' . $zipcode . '"' ; So if you are doing the straight query to CSV export, using the fputcsv function it would look something like this. Basically just overwrite the value in the row and then continue along. while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($query)){         $row['zipcode'] = '="'.$row['zipcode'].'"';     fputcsv($output, $row); } php csv zipcode csv number csv force string

• Word 2010 Navigation Pane and more

  I have been using Office 2010 since Beta1 and have not looked back since. I am currently on an internal RC, but will upgrade tomorrow to the RTM version. There are a plethora of new productivity features and for Word 2010 the one that overshadows everything else, IMO, is the Navigation Pane. I could spend time describing it here, but I'll never be able to cover it more thoroughly than what the product team has on their blog post. You enable it via the "Navigation Pane" checkbox in the "Show" group of the "View" tab on the Word ribbon. Even if you have come across this new Word 2010 feature, trust me you will learn something more about it, you will thank me later. Go learn how to make the most of the new Navigation Pane.             As an aside, there are many new benefits in PowerPoint 2010 too, my favorite being support for sections. Not to leave Excel 2010 out, you should check Excel's integration with HPC Server. Comments about this post welcome at the original blog.

  One of the main new features being touted in Office 2010 is the ability to upload documents to the Web for sharing and collaboration. Today we look at using Office Upload Center to help manage your uploaded documents. Microsoft Office Upload Center  When you upload an Office 2010 document to the web, a handy tool to manage them is the Office Upload Center. It’s a way to see what is being uploaded or what might have failed to reach the servers. It lets you know if a document failed to upload for some reason. In this case it looks like the incorrect credentials were entered when signing into Windows Live. Click on the Resolve button to get a list of actions you can take to get things corrected.   You can access the Upload Center from the icon which appears on the System Tray when uploading documents. Right-click the icon to control notifications, pause uploads, and access its settings. In the Settings section you can choose how Upload Center displays notifications, select the number of days to keep files in Cache, and delete currently cached files. If you find yourself uploading several documents to the web during the day, the Office Upload Center is a nice feature for managing them. • Can I use access used by Visual Basic for building a database [on hold]

  I am the only programmer where I work (summer job) and I am a student with only a few years of programming experience. So I was asked to build a database and I am very excited about this project because hopefully I can learn a lot from this. Using this database my manager is supposed to be able to assign work (dealing with businesses) to different people within the company using an interface (all workers have a shared drive). When workers are done with that paperwork related to the business, they can check off that its done, add comments at the bottom of the interface, and then move on to the next business. The only experience I've had with databases is some querying with SQL, and I've built GUI interfaces with JAVA. The information on the interface will be populated from Excel so workers know what businesses they are dealing with. I've done some research and I believe the best way to build this would be building a GUI using Microsoft Visual Studio (Visual Basic) first, then figuring out a way to populate the Interface from Excel. Also because the data is pretty straight forward and not complicated I will be using MS Access to store and track the database. I know this won't be easy, but for all you geniuses out there, is this on the right path? Thanks.

Here’s how to do it with Google Docs Spreadsheets. If you’re an Excel user, you’re also in luck, because we’ve already shown you how to turn a row into a column, or vice-versa. It won’t make you any less bored though. Convert a Row to a Column (or backwards) The first thing you’ll need is a column or a row of information that you want to convert into the opposite. For our example, we’ve got this set of data that we created by using the Auto Fill options in Google Docs. Now in another cell, you’ll need to use the TRANSPOSE function, which you can use by simply typing in the following: =TRANSPOSE( And then selecting the cells with the mouse, or manually typing in the range of cells you want to copy. The final function in this example was: =TRANSPOSE(A1:A11) Finish it off with the final ) character to complete the function, hit the Enter key, and there we are… the column was transposed over to the right. You can use the same thing to turn columns into rows, or rows into columns—just change the range you are looking for. It is also overly verbose, and does examples several times. I'm not sure if he properly describes corner cases. The first project he outsourced was a failure. I think he overdescribed some details, but underdescribed corner cases. That and/or the coder he hired didn't think through the corner cases and ask appropriate questions. I'm not sure. I got on IM with him and it took me half an hour to dig out a description that should have taken five minutes or less to describe. I wrote the scripts for him at the end, but didn't examine why his process with the coder failed. He has asked me for help. However, I refuse to get involved, because taking his spec and translating it into clear requirements is 10x more work than executing on a clearly written spec. What is the right way for him to learn? Are there resources he could use? Are there ways he can learn from small, low-pressure practice projects with coders? Most of his scripts are statistical and data processing oriented. e.g. take this column and run an average over it. Remove these rows under these conditions. So the challenge is different than spec'ing a web app.

• Developing a Configurable Pricing Program

  The organization I work at has some interesting requirements when it comes to pricing for online commerce. Currently the developers write different 'pricing rules' and those rules can be applied to our items based on attributes of the items. For Example: INPUTS: [cost, sug_retail, discontinued, warehouse_qty, orderable_qty, brand, type, days_available, shipping_rate, weight, map_protected, map_discount] MATCH: brand=x, warehouse_qty 1, discontinued=True, map_protected=False SET: retail_price = (sug_retail * 0.95), offer_price1 = (cost * 1.25 + shipping_rate) I am looking to allow the merchandising team to have more control over the pricing and formulas - they are afterall technical enough to write excel formulas. I've been looking at writing a desktop application that uses something like numexpr http://code.google.com/p/numexpr/ or http://sympy.org/en/index.html to allow non-programmers to integrate their own logic into our pricing backend. We have multiple price-tiers we have to set, for multiple markets, so an elegant solution is needed. It's getting frustrating for the dev team to continually tweak/manage all of the pricing rules (we sell over 200 brands in 3 markets). My question is; does this seem like a decent approach? Can you think of a better way to parse string-mathematical-grammer? Can you think of a different way for users to provide formula's to integrate into a automated pricing system? Does anyone know of any examples of existing applications that do this? Excel, and Access are out of the question - the volume of data we manipulate has already proven the need to automate it - now we just need some visibility into that automation.
