• Storing dates i Train schedule MYSQL

  Hi I have created a train schedule database in MYSQL. There are several thousand routes for each day. But with a few exceptions most of the routes are similar for every working day, but differ on weekends. At this time I basically update my SQL tables at midnight each day, to get the departures for the next 24 hours. This is however very inconvenient. So I need a way to store dates in my tables so I don't have to do this every day. I tried to create a separate table where I stored dates for each routenumber (routenumbers are resetted each day), but this made my query so slow that it was impossible to use. Does this mean I would have to store my departure and arrival times as datetimes? In that case the main table containing routes would have several million entries. Or is there another way? • When should one let an application crash because of an exception in Java (design issue)?

  In most cases, it is possible to catch exceptions in Java, even unchecked ones. But, it is not necessarily possible to do something about it (for example out of memory). For other cases, the issue I am trying to solve is a design principle one. I am trying to set-up a design principle or a set of rules indicating when one should give up on an exceptional situation, even if it is detected in time. The objective is trying to not crash the application as much as possible. Has someone already brainstormed and communicated about this? I am looking for specific generic cases and possible solutions, or thumb-rules. UPDATE Suggestions so far: Stop running if data coherency can be compromised Stop running if data can be deleted Stop running if you can't do anything about it (Out of memory...) Stop running if key service is not available or becomes unavailable and cannot be restarted If application must be stopped, degrade as gracefully as possible Use rollbacks in db transactions Log as much relevant information as you can Notify the developers

• Notepad++ Move Caret Outside Bracket

  I've searched everywhere and can't find an answer to something incredibly simple and useful for Notepad++. When using autoclose, the cursor gets stuck inside, which is good until I've finished typing the parameters. How do I get the caret to jump outside of the currently nested autoclosed element? Regardless of it being (), {}, [], "", '', ? CTRL+B does does something similar, but it goes to the inside of the left bracket first, and then to the outside of the right bracket, which is where I want to be. This only works for brackets though, not tags and qoutations Hitting CTRL+B twice is cumbersome and manually hitting "right arrow" requires too much hand motion while coding. And finally, is there anyway I can map this to "SHIFT+Space"?

  I'm building a versioned API, so I have the following nested controllers: ApiController < ApplicationController Api::V1Controller < ApiController Api::V1::EventsController < Api::V1Controller The API is accessed via a subdomain. I have the following routes: constraints(:subdomain => "api") do scope :module => 'api' do namespace :v1 do resources :events end end end This produces the type of URL I want (/v1/events). The problem I'm facing is when using responds_with in Api::V1::EventsController. Just doing something as simple as the below fails with the error too few arguments: def index @events = Event.all respond_with(@events) end I know respond_width is meant to be used with resources, but I'm not sure how the events resource should be accessed from the constrained, scoped, and namespaced route. I can output other things (such as current_user), just not an array of events. Help?

  I have a question about the following architecture. I am importing my business objects into my client using WCF. Due to the complexity of the business objects ( nested hierarchies ) I want to flatten out my business objects into a dataset/datatable. There are many more tutorials and how-to on successfully using datatables in a report than with a business object so I am pretty attached to this idea. My question is what sort of DataSet should I use? Strongly typed or not? If strongly typed how do I import my business objects into the Datatables?

  I'm blanking on the best way to paste a list of strings together to go into an SQL statement... I'm having trouble with the separator bar | printing at the beginning when I don't want it to: foo = "blah" paste_all_together = NULL for (n in 1:4) { paste_together = paste(foo ,sep = "") paste_all_together = paste(paste_all_together, paste_together, sep = "|") } > paste_all_together [1] "|blah|blah|blah|blah" I just want it to print out "blah|blah|blah|blah". Do I need a nested loop, or is there a better itterator in R for doing this? Or perhaps a better way to input SQL statements?

  Hello, I have a matrix in a txt file and I want to load the matrix based on my input of number of rows and columns For example, I have a 5 by 5 matrix in the file. I want to extract a 3 by 3 matrix, how can I do that ? I created a nested loop using : FILE *sample sample=fopen("randomfile.txt","r"); for(i=0;i<rows;i++){ for(j=0;j<cols;j++){ fscanf(sample,"%f",&matrix[i][j]); } fscanf(sample,"\n",&matrix[i][j]); } fclose(sample); Sadly the code does not work .. If I have this matrix : 5.00 4.00 5.00 6.00 5.00 4.00 3.00 25.00 5.00 3.00 4.00 23.00 5.00 2.00 352.00 6.00 And inputting 3 for rows and 3 for columns, I get : 5.00 4.00 5.00 6.00 5.00 4.00 3.00 25.00 5.00 Which is obviously wrong , its reading line by line rather than skipping the unmentioned column ... What am I doing wrong ? Thanks !

The solution of serialization should only be considered if there are no other solutions.   We have many SVN Repo's but many of them have nested projects. I need some way of finding the trunk directories only and creating a list of them. So, the svn path to trunk might be svn://svnserver/repos/myproject/trunk or it might be svn://svnserver/repos/myproject/mysubproject/trunk I need to generate a list of /trunk directories from several different servers. Is there a method for doing that? Has anyone seen a script (sh, perl, whatever) for doing something similar? I just need a hint on how to get started.

  I want to do permutation in Perl. For example I have three arrays: ["big", "tiny", "small"] and then I have ["red", "yellow", "green"] and also ["apple", "pear", "banana"]. How do I get: ["big", "red", "apple"] ["big", "red", "pear"] ..etc.. ["small", "green", "banana"] I understand this is called permutation. But I am not sure how to do it. Also I don't know how many arrays I can have. There may be three or four, so I don't want to do nested loop.

• Log4J - Speed of resolving class/method/line references

  Does log4J still gather the class, method and line numbers by generating exceptions and inspecting the stack trace? Or has Java been optimized since Sun included their own logging framework. If not, why has there not been any optimizations made since. What is the main challenges in obtaining class, method and line numbers quickly and efficiently? Although I hate annotations and try to avoid them, has log4J not made use of this, such as: @log4j-class MyClass @log4j-method currentMethodOne At least this would avoid some companies bad habit of repeatedly writing/copying the method name as the first part of their logging message (which is seriously annoying). • [as3] Movieclip.width returns higher value than Movieclip stage on Width.

  I have a Movieclip on stage with nested movieclips inside. All referenced at 0,0. None of the child movieclips load any dynamic content, animate or have Masked Layers. It does have an input textfield in one of the child MCs. The parent MC shows 280 px width, while it returns 313 px with a .width trace. There is no code that alters the .width value of the parent MC at run-time. And the ParentMC on stage is not scaled (it is at 100% width/height). Any pointers, to what could be the reasons for the discrepancy in .width values on stage and on run-time? Its breaking the scaling code that follows.

  I have defined a class named MyClass and I have defined two methods myMethod1 and myMethod2 for it: function MyClass() {} MyClass.prototype.myMethod1 = function() {...}; MyClass.prototype.myMethod2 = function() {...}; Inside myMethod1, I use jQuery and there's a callback closure defined there: MyClass.prototype.myMethod2 = function() { $.jQuery({success: function(data) { this.myMethod2(); }, ...}); } Now the problem is that this no longer is referring to MyClass. The question is how can I refer to it? At the moment I have assigned it to a variable named thisObj and access it this way: MyClass.prototype.myMethod2 = function() { var thisObj = this; $.jQuery({success: function(data) { thisObj.myMethod2(); }, ...}); } Is there a better way to access MyClass.this from the closure nested in myMethod2? • Using std::bad_alloc for C pointers

  I'm using a library written in C in a C++ project. I'd like to use C++ exceptions to handle C errors. In particular, it would be nice to have an exception thrown if an allocation fails. I can do this in constructors of classes which hold C-style pointers to C structs : if (c_object == NULL) throw std::bad_alloc(); But if the class is responsible for several C objects they are no ways of free-ing all already allocated pointers since the destructor isn't called. I have a feeling I could use smart-pointers, but I don't have much experience with them. What's more, I have to have access to the original C pointers to use the C api properly. Is there an elegant solution to this ?

  I'm running my unit tests on a piece of code that does the following in the test: Assert.IsNotNull(target.Icon); Inside the getter for the Icon property, I'm doing this: System.Windows.Controls.Image img = new System.Windows.Controls.Image(); That's throwing this exception: System.InvalidOperationException : The calling thread must be STA, because many UI components require this. I understand what that means, and I understand that I need to use the Dispatcher, but I'm a bit confused about how or why... this is a property of my ViewModel and I don't get any of these exceptions when running the application. Other info: this only started failing when I upgraded to .NET 4.

• ASP.Net website makes browser load unwanted (non-referenced) plugins

  I've found that some of my ASP.Net web apps prompt the browser to load plugins that I'm not explicitely using and certainly haven't deliberately referenced in the project settings. Two that come to mind are for MS MediaPlayer and the "SVG Viewer for Netscape". The only commonality I've determined so far is that the two sites/apps affected both use Master pages (nested in some cases). We don't use SVG file types (just the normal mix of jpg/gif/png) and no video/audio (not yet anyway). Can anyone provide a hint as to where the references for these might be creeping in? e.g. Is it a server-level include? Or a .Net runtime default when using master pages? Does anyone else even experience this, or is it just me? No urgency, I'd just like to remove it if possible. Thanks. Al

  I recently came across this CSS selector while trying to find a way to easily space out major blog elements such as paragraphs and images. An example of its use would be something like this: .post *+* {margin-top: 15px;} /* or... */ .post > *+* {margin-top: 15px;} /* if you don't want the margin to apply to nested elements */ At first glance, it seemed pretty useful. So my question is: What downsides are there to using these selectors? Specifically: What's the browser support like for this? Are there any cases you wouldn't want an even margin spacing between elements in an article and if not, is it easier to declare this first and then overwrite or simply declare each element individually? Does this have performance issues since you're selecting everything twice?

  I will use some CMD commands in my program and these commands might throw some exceptions. And as you know, when an exception accours, CMD writes its own error message the screen. But, I want to write my own error message. My question is this: Is there a way to block CMD messages and write only my own error messages? P.S. This is not a complex program. It executes CMD commands using System(). Example: Let's say, the user can rename and copy any files in the program. As you know, if the user does not enter file's path properly, an error message is showed on the screen. And I want that this error message never appears on the screen. Only my own error message is showed. Thank you!

• Is there a way to load multiple app.configs in memory?

  I have a windows service that loads multiple "handlers" written by different developers. The windows service exe has it's own app.config which I need. I'm trying to make it so that each developer can provide their own app.config along with their handler code. However, it seems an exe can only have one app.config. However, ASP.NET seems to support nested web.config... That's not exactly what I want, but I don't even know how I would get that to work in a windows service. Anyone come across this before or have any ideas?

• int i vs int index etc. Which one is better?

  Coming from a C background I've always used int i for generic loop variables. Of course in big nested loops or other complex things I may use a descriptive name but which one had you rather see? int i; for(i=0;i<Controls.Count;i++){ DoStuff(Controls[i]); } or int index; for(index=0;index<Controls.Count;index++){ DoStuff(Controls[index]); } In the current project I am working on there are both of these styles and index being replaced by ndx. Which one is better? Is the i variable too generic? Also what about the other C style names? i, j, k Should all of these be replaced by actual descriptive variables?

  In my application I have a tab control which has several tab items. The problem is that I want to apply a style to these tab items, but to no other (nested) tab items. I have tried setting the following style on the tab control, but this also effects all children: <Style x:Key="tabControlStyle" TargetType="{x:Type TabControl}"> <Setter Property="TabItem.Template" Value="{StaticResource tabItemTemplate}" /> </Style> By using the code above I get the following error: 'TabItem' ControlTemplate TargetType does not match templated type 'TabControl', as TabItem and TabControl have the same DependencyProperty "Template", and the code tries to set the TabItemTemplate as TabControl- Template. Can anybody help me?

• Can I reproduce Scala's behavior for == ?

  In Programming in Scala, I can read that the == operator behaves as if it was defined like this: final def == (that: Any): Boolean = if (null eq this) {null eq that} else {this equals that} But there must actually be compiler magic to avoid null pointer exceptions, right? Is there any way for me to replicate this behavior with pure Scala; i.e., have an operator/method return one thing if the receiver is null and another one if it isn't? What I mean is an actual implementation of null eq this. I suppose I can write a "pimp" and then define the method on the wrapper class, but is there a more direct way to do this?
