• Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

  I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

• No surround sound over HDMI

  I have my Pioneer receiver hooked up to my AMD HD4600m which supports audio output over HDMI. I used to work fine, however, after a recent driver update, it will only output stereo sound. It used to output 5.1 surround sound perfectly. Windows does not seem to recognize the device as capable of 5.1. In the past, 5.1 was given as an option in the configuration window, like this: I can not get it to properly recognize the capabilities of the device. I have tried uninstalling the relevant audio device in device manager, and I have also completely removed and reinstalled the display driver. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

• Explorer.exe - No such interface supported and other issues

  The problem started when I uninstalled my ATI graphics driver and i used a driver cleaner. After i restarted win7 and it got to POST the screen just went completely blank. So i Used system restore from the repair menu to get back on. I found out that if I ran chkdsk the display just goes black after restart on startup and i have to use system restore to get back on windows7 not sure why this is. When i right click desktop and choose 'Screen Resolution' it says No such interface supported. Also when I click items such as device manager in the windows explorer it does not do anything. I have tried re-registering the DLLS but that did not do anything.

• I keep getting blue screen - Windows 7 x64 (maybe ram?)

  I have +- 5yrs old pc runnig windows 7 and I've been getting blue screen recently. I had win 8 and I got a lof of erros with ram memory, so I reinstalled back to Win 7. (I have 2x 2 GB RAM) To make a better image of my errors - I get them while writing email, installing nvidia driver, sound driver, running RAM test. I got a log of my last error, could anyone tell me what is it? Should I get new RAM memories? • Need Assistance on ASUS K55V USB ports not working

  I have a K55V ASUS laptop, W7 Home (64bit). Whenever I try to use a mouse (or any other USB device), it doesn't work because of a driver problem. The automatic update tries to update the driver and requires me to reboot directly after. It doesn't work. Windows update then wants to re-attempt the update and then I have to reboot (etc). Now, after 10 tries it still doesn't work. Can some one help me out on this? No USB ports work at the moment, it has 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port.

• Is there an easy way to disable this laptop's touchpad?

  Specifically, I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525. I'd like to disable the touchpad so that I can re-enable if my mouse were to run out of batteries (so physically breaking the connection to the motherboard or uninstalling the driver will not be the best options). In the Control Panel, when I go to "Mouse" and find the touch pad, there is no disable option. Any ideas? Edit: I am on Windows 7. There is a driver on the Dell site that might allow an option to disable it, but I cannot install it on Windows 7.

• Options not available anymore in my Samsung 932bw lcd

  I think a friend messed up something in my monitor. I left him playing a game and when i came back, i noticed that the brightness was very high. I tried to change it but i couldn't, brithness, contrast, color warm and a few other options are marked as "not available" (he probably adjusted the brightness and changed something else too, that it's causing this thing). I updated the monitor driver, the vcard driver, plugged the monitor in other pc (I'm connected through dvi, but in the other pc i plugged through rgb) but nothing fixed it. Is there someway to force reset all the options or something like that to fix this? (I'm running Win7 RC1 but I don't think that it has something to do with it, it was working perfectly until he messed it up, and the other pc where I plugged it, runs winxp and the problem occurs too. And it doens't look like a the monitor is broken, it works like it always did, just these options are marked "not available" now...)

• Windows 8 FN key doesn't work for brightness

  I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 and fn+f5/fn+f6 keys (for brightness) doesn't work. In fact, they work, but they can increase/decrease the brightness only 1 time. I mean - after pressing fn+f5 once, nothing happens if I try to press fn+f5 again, before I press fn+f6. This only happens after logging in. At the login screen and during Windows boot I can adjust the brightness as I want, but after login I can't. I installed the latest ATK driver and NVIDIA graphics driver for Windows 8, and I think that my problem is related to conflict with drivers. I tried to reinstall/delete some drivers, but it didn't help. How can I detect where is the problem? Thanks.

  We're migrating an LAOP server to Win 2k8 IIS7 MSSQL and PHP (WIMP?) at work, and I'm using the opportunity to clean up the PHP. Currently it doesn't use PDO, and I'd like to rewrite the PHP to use that instead. Challenge is, I don't know much about MSSQL and PHP deployment on Windows. The official MSSQL PDO object is experimental / depreicated and recommends PDO-ODBC. Microsoft just announced a driver supporting PDO. Is there no other PDO driver? How does SQLSRV contrast with PDO-ODBC?

• Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem? • BIND unstable with DLZ+MySQL on Ubuntu 9.10, any ideas?

  My BIND server keeps dropping out and I can't work out why.   I have a desktop with Asus P5KPS/EPU motherboard and Nvidia GF 9600 GT Graphic Adapter. I just set up new windows 7. My problem is that I cannot find a good dirver for my Graphic Adapter. I've downloaded driver from Nvidia.com which say support my GF 9600 GT, but when I installed it, it said This graphics drivers could not find compatible graphics hardware. I go into safe mode, uninstall Standard Graphics Adapter that auto installed then install my Nvidia driver, still not work. Anyone can show me how to solve this problem?

• Belkin Wireless G router not working on Windows 7

  I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless G router which used to work on XP. I have a clean Windows 7 install (on the same desktop PC), and it just won't work. Device Manager lists the adapter as a USB device, but it says "The drivers for this device are not installed", even though the driver installer said the installation was OK. Manage Wiresless Networks says "wireless is not currently enabled". The WLAN AutoConfig service is running. My specific question is which of the two symptoms above should I go for first? Should I try to fix the driver installation somehow, or should I try to enable wireless? Is one caused by the other, or is this two independent problems? Any other thoughs that could help me are also appreciated.

  I just got a laptop from a friend. The CD/DVD drive is not present in "My Computer". But the tray comes out when I press the button and everything. I remember long time ago, enabling it by changing some registry value, but I forgot which one. I have administrator privileges. I can see it in the device manager. But it has a yellow exclamation icon on it. My OS: Windows XP SP3 In Device Manager, inside the properties window for this device, the following error is shown in the "Device Status" box. • Removing 'bundled' software to make a slow laptop faster?

  My brother-in-law has a cheap HP laptop used by his kids for schoolwork. It had got into a bit of a state and was running slowly with some dubious software. I removed a bunch of stuff that had been installed, that was obviously not required (three different driver scanners!), had been downloaded in error or looked like malware. I also disabled as many 'start on login' apps as I could and removed AVG replacing it with MSE. (AVG is uninstalled and replaced with MSE after failing to detect malware) What remains is a significant quantity of bundled HP and 'nero backup' software, including a HP restore utility (apparently something like the osx hidden partition restore), the trackpad driver. is there anything else I can do to breath a little more life into the old 'celeron' laptop? Should I bit the bullet and just put win8 on it? Will the trackpad still work?

• Windows 8.1 will not boot after upgrading from Windows 8 on my PC

  I have not found a fix. After running the Windows 8.1 Update from the store my computer will not boot unless In insert my recovery USB drive and try to repair. (The repair fails.) However after I power of the PC and remove the USB drive. The PC will boot correctly once. I would leave the PC on but it shuts it self off at night. (And yes I have checked my power profile, it is set to never.) The only thing I have found online is a possibly corrupt video driver. I uninstalled the video driver reboot and it did not fix the issue. Anybody have any suggestions? The PC is a HP EliteBook 8730w laptop. I had no issues with Windows 8 or the Windows 8.1 preview.

• Windows doesn't recognise my USB key anymore (it used to work)

  I use my friend's USB flash drive (Corsair flash voyager 16gb) to transfer files from my laptop to my desktop computer. However, since a couple of days my laptop stopped recognizing the USB key.. while there is still no problems with all other computers. I use Windows 7 64 bits if that can help. I tried uninstalling the driver, rebooting and all those kind of tricks, but it won't work. When I connect it and open the "My computer" window, I see "Removable Disk (G:)" for a moment, then it disappears... then it reappears again and it keeps doing that periodically. I can't even right click then hit "Properties" because it disappears. As I recall, it DOES work on every other computers, I think it has to do with the driver but what can I do?

  I have installed an MSDN version of Windows 8 Professional (x64) RTM. For about 3 restarts everything worked well. But once I've rebooted again - USB drivers (all of them, inluding the USB 3 drivers) stopped working. Device Manager properties said that the USB driver is not compatible with the system. Gigabyte doesn't list Windows 8 drivers for my MB X58A-UD3R. Tried to reinstall windows 7 USB drivers - system said the current driver is fine and didn't want to reinstall. Is this the common Windows 8 problem? How can solve it or debug it even more?

• Apache httpd + FreeTDS hangs until restarted

  Every so often requests to a Linux server (say, linux.example.org) where the web app (Django) pulls in data from a SQL Server database via FreeTDS will hang. Requests on other servers pointing to the database still work, as do requests on linux.example.org that use local MySQL databases. Only the server plus FreeTDS appear to be affected. Restarting httpd makes the database connections work correctly again. What could cause this problem? • RCA monitor won't display highest resolution when NVidia drivers are installed

  My computer is a dual-monitor setup. It won't display my second monitor's highest res... In fact, it will only display one resolution. Anything higher or lower makes the monitor not show the screen. I've had this problem with this computer, and I upgraded almost all my components (cpu, RAM, mobo, and video card included) and I still have this problem with my new setup. This leads me to believe it's a problem with my monitor and the NVidia driver together. Any thoughts on what can be done? The manufacturer of the monitor doesn't make a driver for this monitor. I used to run Windows Vista and now my new setup runs Windows 7.

• DVD/CD-ROM drives stop working in Windows 7

  All of a sudden Windows 7 (64 bit) lost all DVD and CD-ROM drives. It worked fine for about a month, then I don't know what happened. At first I thought it was a hardware problem - that my DVD-ROM had malfunctioned. But then I realized that Windows 7 no longer picked up on Demon Tools drives either. I can boot both Windows installation and Knoppix from the DVD-drive. So it seems to be a general problem with "disc-media". When trying to reinstall the hardware DVD-ROM Windows recognizes the drive (though sometimes simply label it as "CD-ROM drive"), but then says something went wrong - with from what I understand is a default error message (39), claiming the driver has become corrupt. I've tried every Microsoft recommended action, i.e. uninstall, reinstall, look for driver updates etc. etc., but with no luck. Any tip most welcome!

• Does Windows 8 Need New, Specialized Drivers?

  It seems like an obvious question, but I’m having a difficult time finding out if Windows 8, with all its changes, will require new, specialized drivers. I see that a lot of manufacturers have started releasing Windows 8-specific drivers for their hardware, but what about those that are not, will Windows XP or 7 drivers work or have they changed the driver/system/security architecture again, thus requiring new drivers? The closest thing I could find to an answer was a thread in which it was mentioned that the display driver model was again updated, thus requiring new display drivers, but not much else (e.g., audio cards, printers, chipsets, etc.)
