Can't find instructions how to use Windows 7 drivers on Windows Server 2008 R2

Maybe I should post this to http://www.serverfault.com. Windows 7 comes with all sorts of signed drivers so there's high probability that all drivers for your machine will be installed during system setup. On the other hand Windows Server 2008 doesn't event though it's practically the same OS when it comes to drivers. But I know that this has a very good reason. It's a server product, not a desktop one. But the thing is that many power users and developers use server OS on their workstations which are normally desktop machines and would need Windows 7 driver spectrum... Question I know I've been reading about some trick on the internet that first installed Windows 7 on the machine, than do something to get either all Windows 7 driver collection or just those installed, and then install Windows Server 2008 and use those drivers. The thing is: I can't seem to find these instructions on the internet any more. If anybody knows where these are please provide the link for the rest of us.

Audio doesn't work on Windows XP guest (WS 7.0)

I can't get audio to work with on a Windows XP guest running on VMware Workstation 7.0 and Ubuntu 9.10 host. Windows fails to produce any audio output and the Windows device manager says the Multimedia Audio Controller is not working properly. Audio is working fine in the host OS. When I open Multimedia Audio Controller properties it says: Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) If I try to reinstall the driver I get the following error message: Cannot Install this Hardware There was a problem installing this hardware: Multimedia Audio Controller An Error occurred during the installation of the device Driver is not intended for this platform Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Need help making an ODBC MySQL Connection

Short Version: How do I connect from PowerShell to an ODBC 5.1 MySQL Driver? I can't seem to find any connection strings that accurately have a "Provider" field for this particular instance. (See bottom of this question for examples/errors) ===== Long Version: I'm not a server guy, and I've been handed the task of setting up PowerGadgets on our network. I have a MySQL server running on a Linux box, that is configured for remote access and has a user defined for remote access as well. On my windows desktop PC, I have PowerGadgets installed. I installed the MySQL ODBC 5.1 connector, and went to Control Panel Data Sources and set up a User DSN connection to the database. The connection, user, and pass seem to be correct because it lists the tables of the database in my windows control panel. Where I'm running into trouble is in 3 places in PowerGadgets: When selecting a data source, I can select "SQL Server". Inputting the servers IP address does not work and I can't get this option to work at all. When selecting a data source, I can select "OleDB". This screen has a wizard on it, that appears to populate all the correct information (including database table names!) for me. "Test Connection" runs great. But if I try to complete the wizard, I get the error "The .NET Framework data provider for OLEDB does not support the MS Ole DB provider for ODBC Drivers." When selecting a data source, I can select "ODBC". This screen does not have a wizard and I cannot figure out a "connection string" that works. Typically it will respond with the error "The field 'Provider' is missing". Googling ODBC connection strings doesn't reveal any examples with a "provider" field and have no idea what to put in here. The connection string (for #2) above contains "SQLOLEDB" as a provider, and upon inputting that value into this connection string I get the same connection error that #2 gets. I believe I can solve my problems by figuring out a connection string for #3 but don't know where to get started. (PowerGadgets also allows for PowerShell support but I believe I will run into the same problem there) == Here's my current PowerShell connection that doesn't work: invoke-sql -connection "Driver={MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver};Initial Catalog=hq_live;Data Source=HQDB" -sql "Select * FROM accounts" Spits back the error: "Invoke-Sql : An OLE DB Provider was not specified in the ConnectionString. An example would be, 'Provider=SQLOLEDB;'. == Another string that doesn't work: invoke-sql -connection "Provider=MSDASQL.1;Persist Security Info=False;Data Source=HQDB;Initial Catalog=hq_live" -sql "select * from accounts" And the error: The .Net Framework Data Provider for OLEDB (System.Data.OleDb) does not support the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (MSDASQL). Use the .Net Framework Data Provider for ODBC (System.Data.Odbc).

Can't Install Windows 2008 R2 on Lenovo Laptop With SSD

I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on a new Lenovo X201 or T410 laptop. Setup halts with the following pop-up: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive you can safely remove it for this step. The CD drive is obviously working, as it's booting from CD to get to this point. The only thing I can think is that it is to do with the fact they have SSD disks in - but that's just a guess. (Edit - One extra thing that may or may not be relevant: it's the 64 bit version of Server 2008 R2)

Intel 520 SSD drives not working with lsi controller on VMware esxi 5

We have a problem with our LSI 9266 controller. LSI have vmware drivers which normally show the health status of connected drives, raid controller, battery etc from within the vSphere Client. This driver also allows connectivity from the LSI MSM utility from a windows workstation. The problem is as soon as I connect my intel 520 SSD drives the health status in the vsphere client disappears, also we lose connectivity via the LSI MSM utlity. Any other drives we test are fine, 1TB SAS drives, other SSD drives etc are all OK. The Intel drives are on the compatability list and are supported by LSI but dont work with the VMware driver. If I install a windows OS on the physical server we have no problems. I have logged a ticket with LSI but they havent been very helpful. I am trying to find other people that may have had the same issue and maybe even a fix

Problem installing Cardbus/PCMCIA drivers (USB 2.0 2-port)

I obtained the drivers from the manufacturer for my HT-Link NEC USB 2.0 2-port Cardbus card. When I plugged in the card before I got the drivers, 3 new entries showed up in the Device Manager - two "NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller" and one "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller." With the card plugged in, I uninstalled those two drivers. I then removed the card. I copied the new drivers to c:\windows\system32\drivers and the .inf file to c:\windows\inf. I also copied the drivers & inf to a new directory called c:\windows\drivers\ousb2. I reinserted the card. Windows automatically installed the same drivers as before. I selected 'update driver' on the "NEC PCI to USB..." entry and didn't see any other options. I then selected 'have disk' and pointed to c:\windows\drivers\ousb2 and got a message "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." I then selected 'update driver' on the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB...," and manually selected "USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Windows then automatically found a USB root hub, and I manually selected "USB 2.0 Root Hub Device" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Now there are two sections in the Device Manager titled "Universal Serial Bus controllers." I plugged in my external USB hard disk adapter, and "USB Mass Storage Device" was added to the first set. Here's how it looks (w/drivers from the properties): [Universal Serial Bus controllers] Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD (6/1/2002 5.1.2600.0) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) USB Mass Storage Device USB Root Hub (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) (5 more USB Root Hubs - same driver) [Universal Serial Bus controllers] USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1) USB 2.0 Root Hub Device (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1) When I unplug the card the two "NEC PCI to USB..." entries in the first set disappear, and the whole second set disappears. I don't think the above looks right - a second set of USB controllers listed in the Device Manager, and the NEC entries still in the first set, and the the USB mass storage device still in the first set. Any help appreciated. (Windows XP PRO SP3 w/all current updates.)

When I run the following query: logparser -i:EVT -o:NAT "SELECT TimeGenerated,EventID,Message from System WHERE EventTypeName='Error event'" I get the following output: 2009-09-02 19:35:44 7000 The USB Mass Storage Driver service failed to start due to the following error: %%1058 The full "Message" in EventViewer is: Description: The USB Mass Storage Driver service failed to start due to the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. How can I obtain complete message using logparser?

Running hardware with only 32bit drivers in 64bit windows

Recently we had to upgrade a system to handle added HD IP cameras. This upgrade involved an entirely new computer build with the exception of a rather pricey Geovision DVR (PCI/GV1480 series). Apparently while these cards do support Windows 7, they do not support Windows 7 x64. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place here trying to figure out how we can remedy this, is there a virtualization solution that will allow devices with driver issues to passthru to the Guest OS? I was thinking XPMode may work for this solution however I am unsure if it runs 32bit or 64bit and if it'll allow driver-issue devices to pass to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Best Regards, Howard

Windows does not detect any modems anymore[HSPA]

By an accident i uninstalled my Connect manager (ZTE). but when i re-install it the virtual CD drive is detected but it does not detect the drivers. When i direct to the folder containing the relevant drivers(.sys files) still it doesnt detect. Then i tried a modem of a different brand Huawei the same problem presists As i understand it is not a device(brand) driver specific issue as it does not detect modem(dongles) of any brand. when i plugged in a different USB device(a pen drive) the driver is detected and it works perfectly. Please help me with the issue i have tried system restore but it doesnt work. I want a repair that works without re-installing windows [Edit] I tried Karan's suggested method with usboblivion it didnt work. now im sure that the issue does not deal with the registry

Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device" successfully

Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. Whatever is being installed does so without error. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?

How can I change the amount of video memory with a Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset?

I have the chipset in the title. I've looked in the BIOS; there's nothing there. Is there any way I can force it to go higher? Thanks :)

Windows 2003 SP1 terminal server printers Disappear after reboot - HP laserjet 4240

had working PCL6 laserjet 4240 driver. needed to downgrade to PCl5, tried but did not get clean install. tried again and it seemed to work (this is 2003 enterprise terminal server SP2) Have over 40 working laserjets (5, 4000, 4100 and 18 of the 4240) After normal nightly reboot the 18 4240 printers were 'gone'. Worked w/Microsoft who said bad HP driver issues - weird since they work on other terminal servers. downloaded latest version, etc. from HP site and can NOT get to work. As soon as I install, then do a Net Stop Spool and Net Start Spooler the printer is 'gone'. Current workaround is to use HP 4000 PCL5 drivers for all of these 4240 printers.

Boot Vista x64 with both ICH8 and ICH10 AHCI support

I have a situation where I need to boot Windows Vista 64-bit from both a ICH10 and ICH8 AHCI SATA controller. Currently, it is setup to boot from the ICH10, but when I try booting with the ICH8, I get the famed Windows STOP 7B BSOD. How can I add the ICH8 driver so that I can work around this BSOD and boot the system? I have updated to the latest Intel AHCI driver (8.9.0.1023 as of this post) which is supposed to support both chipsets, but I feel I am missing something.

Blue Screen Of Death after Graphics Card Update

I recently installed the game watch dogs After installing it i upgraded the drivers on my graphics card AMD Radion R9 200 series via the catalyst software and since then windows has been crashing on an ad-hoc basis even when sitting idle I have recieved two different sets of errors OXOOOOOOO1 and VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR I am running windows 8.1 with the driver 14.4 from AMD My PC shouldnt really be having this problem as it is pretty high spec due to my work Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is driving me up the walls a bit [UPDATE 08-06-2014] I have been looking around online and have crashed the PC a few times now trying to recreate the bug I have looked into the event history viewer and gotten the following errors amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: IOCTL_ACPKSD_KSD_TO_USR_SVC_SET_FB_APERTURES: FAILED acpusrsvc: GfxMemServiceInitialize: FAILED amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: IOCTL_ACPKSD_KSD_TO_USR_SVC_SET_FB_APERTURES: FAILED amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: GfxMemServiceInitialize: FAILED I took some advice from the AMD forums to re-install the old drivers to see if they would work. I uninstalled the old ones first and installed directly from the CD I got the warnings below but the driver installed "successfully" The Warnings are amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: ConfigureFrameBufferMemory: FAILED. Hopefully this will spark something off for someone Thanks John

hi, i have had windows 7 installed for a few months, working fine with soundblaster xi around 7p was watching youtube videos with sound went and made dinner around 9p came back, realized there was no sound coming out of speakers, even though windows mixer shows sound output restarted, no sound uninstalled driver, restarted had windows search for driver, it installed, windows mixer showed sound bar moving while playing an mp3 but couldn't hear i've tested with speakers plugged into soundblaster, as well as headphones plugged into the audio port on the front of my computer. what could have happened? what could the solution be? Connecting CR 2008 and Oracle database: "TNS file could not be opened"

I am trying to connect to an Oracle database using CR 2008 drivers for oracle (specifically OLE db driver). When I try to connect I provide the correct connection parameters however I keep getting "TNS file could not be opened" error. I am very confused about this message does this mean I am missing some component? From my understanding the driver should be able to connect. Currently on the computer running Crystal reports there is only has Crystal reports 2008 installed. Do i need to install the oracle instant client on the CR computer in order to make a proper connection? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Buildcraft Minecraft mod causing crashes, NVIDIA-304xx Linux Drivers, KDE

All is perfect, 96 fps average. Until an item tries to enter a buildcraft pipe. Tekkit instantly crashes, no error dialog. I have no idea what logs to look at for information on the crash, or how to fix it. Sharp flat panel scaling with Nvidia drivers

I have a Samsung 226BW flat panel with a 1680x1050 native resolution. As my PC is rather dated (Athlon XP 2600+ and GeForce 6600 GT), I need to run more recent games (but still old) on a lower resolution. Unfortunately, scaling low resolutions to 1680x1050 results in a very blurry image (bilinear scaling). I have created a custom resolution of 840x525 in the Nvidia control panel. Technically, this resolutions allows perfect upscaling to 1680x1050 without the need for bilinear interpolation. Unfortunately, the Nvidia driver always seems to do bilinear scaling, again resulting in a blurry image. However, I seem to remember that I did obtain crisp images using this resolution in the past (before a Windows re-install). Maybe only some driver versions support integer upscaling without bilinear filtering? Or perhaps there are other solutions?

Dell D620 Windows 7 Blank screen

When I installed Windows 7 on my Dell D620 it was all fine until a couple of days later most times when I either shut down or suspend (by closing the lid). When I unsuspend or startup the computer, there is often a completely blank screen (can't see post screen or anything), and restarting doesn't help. I've found that I can eventually bring it back up again by suspending and unsuspending a few times, but obviously this is not ideal. Has anyone else experienced this? I think it is a driver issue, that somehow the driver is putting the video card into a certain mode that it forgets how to get it back out of. Any ideas on a better solution than my switching off and on business? Edit: Turns out that the video card had burned out! IT managed to get me a new mainboard sorted for me.

Intermittent connection issues with atheros ar9285

I have an asus K50IJ which has an atheros ar9285 wifi chip. It has decided to start to randomly drop internet. Although the card doesn't seem to notice it has. It will show full signal instead of say 3 bars. I tried to look at the atheros site for the latest driver but they don't even offer driver downloads. I then checked the asus site and it doesn't even list that card in the downloads for this laptop. I run Windows 7 64bit. It will drop either every minute or once a day while I am doing intensive bandwidth usage and when I am just idling.

I don't think the above looks right - a second set of USB controllers listed in the Device Manager, and the NEC entries still in the first set, and the the USB mass storage device still in the first set. Any help appreciated. (Windows XP PRO SP3 w/all current updates.)

Audio doesn't work on Windows XP guest (WS 7.0)

Hi, I can't get audio to work with on a Windows XP guest running on VMware Workstation 7.0 and Ubuntu 9.10 host. Windows fails to produce any audio output and the Windows device manager says the Multimedia Audio Controller is not working properly. Audio is working fine in the host OS. When I open Multimedia Audio Controller properties it says: Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) If I try to reinstall the driver I get the following error message: "Cannot Install this Hardware There was a problem installing this hardware: Multimedia Audio Controller An Error occurred during the installation of the device Driver is not intended for this platform" Has anyone else experienced this problem?
