  • NTPD: use an unrestricted port for communication

    When querying ntp servers with the command ntpdate, I can use the -u argument to make the source port an unrestricted port (port 1024 and above). With ntpd, which is meant to run in the background, I can't seem to find a way to turn this option on. So the source port is always 123. It's playing around horribly with my firewall configuration. Is there a configuration option in ntp.conf to make it use a random source port?

  • Why are difference lists more efficient than regular concatenation?

    I am currently working my way through the Learn you a haskell book online, and have come to a chapter where the author is explaining that some list concatenations can be ineffiecient: For example ((((a ++ b) ++ c) ++ d) ++ e) ++ f Is supposedly inefficient. The solution the author comes up with is to use 'difference lists' defined as newtype DiffList a = DiffList {getDiffList :: [a] -> [a] } instance Monoid (DiffList a) where mempty = DiffList (\xs -> [] ++ xs) (DiffList f) `mappend` (DiffList g) = DiffList (\xs -> f (g xs)) I am struggling to understand why DiffList is more computationally efficient than a simple concatenation in some cases. Could someone explain to me in simple terms why the above example is so inefficient, and in what way the DiffList solves this problem?

  • openmp program elapsed time not scaling with increased threads

    I've got this openmp fortran program doing an embarrassingly parallel problem - do loop over 512^3 elements. See output below. Why would there be such strange behavior in the elapsed time as a function of threads? I thought it would peak at a sweet spot then slowly degrade. This clearly isn't happening. Perhaps I misunderstand something about openmp.   • failure on creating a Scikits.TimeSeries object

    Hi All I am trying to create a scikit.timeseries object starting from 2 datetime objects. If I understood correctly it should be possible to create a scikits.timeseries starting from datetime objects. I try the following code but it says that Insufficient parameters. The 2 datetime differs for few microseconds. In this case what should be the value for freq parameter? Is what I am trying allowed? In theory, since timeseries can be based on datetime objects it should be possible to hanlde up to microsecond , is this correct? I think that this is not really clear to me.     I'm making a request from an UpdatePanel that takes more then 90 seconds. I'm getting this timeout error. "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerTimeoutException: The server request timed out." Does anyone know if there is a way to increase the amount of time before the the call times out?

Example: I want to write a class with the JPA @Embeddable annotation, which would be present at compile time (maven scope: "provided"). But the annoatation definition could be absent at runtime, if the class is used outside a JPA application.

  • Why did my ASP.NET Web App stop showing AM in times?

    I haven't made any code or configuration changes (that I know of) to my ASP.NET web application and this morning it suddenly stopped showing the AM in my displayed times. PM still shows up, just not AM. It's hosted on Windows Server 2003. I figured somehow the OS regional settings might have been changed somehow, but that doesn't appear to be the case. How could this have happened?

    What techniques / methods exist for getting sub-millisecond precision timing data in C or C++, and what precision and accuracy do they provide? I'm looking for methods that don't require additional hardware. The application involves waiting for approximately 50 microseconds +/- 1 microsecond while some external hardware collects data. EDIT: OS is Wndows, probably with VS2010. If I can get drivers and SDK's for the hardware on Linux, I can go there. Thanks.

    I need to know how to wait at set amount of time (about 10 seconds), for a user to input a key or set of keys, before proceeding with an 'auto run' portion of the application.
