• Windows 7 system CPU bogged by windows services, no explanation

  I'm looking at a laptop for a colleague which is running terribly slow. A quick look showed that the CPU was 100% used by 2-3 SVCHost processes, which off course doesn't tell much since those are just 'cover' processes with services running underneath them. So I fired up process explorer in hopes of finding a shady rogue service which was bogging the system, but to my suprise I found genuine MS Windows processes (or at least damn-good disguised ones) are bogging down the system: dnscache (DNS Client) IKEEXT (IKE and AuthIP IPSec Keyring modules) iphlpsvc (IP Helper) Seen separately, these processes might seem odd to be using a lot of CPU, but taking a step back one can conclude that all three services are quite closely related to networking. I've tried running: netsh int ip reset log.txt which has helped me save bizarre network-related problems in the past, but this didn't help Off course I though about a virus, but both MS Security Essentials as well as malwarebytes (let both run a full scan).

• XP Clients can't copy to networkshare

  i have a windows 2003 domain where i have strange problem. One of our file shares is on a 2003r2 domain controller, xp clients trying to copy files on the share are always getting the error error copying file or folder filename could not be copied. path too long while windows 7 clients work fine. Nothing unusal is found in the eventlog on both the server and the client. It doesn't matter if i access the share by fqdn or ip, the path is including filename shorter than 20 characters i.e. \path\share\file.txt Copying files to other servers is fine. Reading from the shares is ok too. Happened from one day to the other, one windows update that was installed this day (kb2736233) was removed but nothing changed. thanks for any tips

• Search desktop files using a list of keywords stored in a text file

  I have a list of 1285 keywords (database object names) that I have compiled into a TXT file; one keyword per line. I would like to search a directory of files (most have a .aspx or .cs extension) using this list of keywords. My main goal is find out which of the 1285 database objects are being referenced in these files. Can anyone recommend a tool that could accomplish this? Otherwise, I will just create my own. Thanks.

Now, i created a RewriteMap in my because i need to increase velocity (20.000 redirect 301 in htaccess no good), so: RewriteEngine On RewriteMap redirects dbm=db:/var/www/html/presta152/prestashop/redirects.db RewriteCond ${redirects:$1} !="" RewriteRule ^(.*)$ ${redirects:$1} [redirect=permanent,last] and my redirects.db is created by redirects.txt, that contains: /PRODUCT_1.aspx http://www.site.com/product.php?id_product=2891 /PRODUCT_2.aspx http://www.site.com/product.php?id_product=2896 this works if i try to call for example: www.site.com/PRODUCT_1.aspx i'm redirected... but if i try to call www.site.com/everythingpossibileinside/PRODUCT_1.aspx the redirect doesn't work. So, in my .htaccess this rule: RewriteRule ^(.*)/PRODUCT_1.aspx http://www.site.com/product.php?id_product=2891 works, but in my RewriteMap no. • "Access is denied" when copying text file to printer UNC path

  We have a new server running Server 2008 R2. We also have a "DOS-based" program that prints directly to the UNC path of a print share. With the new server, we are unable to print from this program. According to support, the program's printing works in the same way as if we were to do a "copy mytextfile.txt \\myserver\myprinter". When we try to run this command in DOS, we get "Access is denied". Support is saying that this is why the DOS program is not able to print. I have tried granting all permissions on the printer to the appropriate users (under Security of the printer properties) but that did not work. Is there a policy setting that would cause this to be denied?

• How can I set `less` or `more` max lines (scrollable height) limit/boundary in linux?

  (Sorry for the title. Any suggestions?) I've set my commandline PS1 to cover 3 lines: white space user, server and pwd $ or # to input I think less (or more?) is configured to break after window's height - 1, because when I do a $ git log, the first two lines are invisible at the top of the window and the rest is scrollable. I'm not sure who handles this scrolling and its configuration, but I assume GIT uses less/more. Where can I configure that my scrollable window is window height - 3 lines and not window height - 1? More info: If I cat lines.txt | less with a 23 line file, it shows the entire file and no scrolling. If I do the same with a 24 line file, it doesn't show line 1 (and no scrolling). With 25 lines: doesn't show lines 1 and 2 (and no scrolling). With 26 lines: shows line 1 and scrolling! The less breakpoint is at the wrong height...

• Non-blocking service to receive messages on port via UDP

This processing consists of appending the message to a locally stored txt-file and send it as http, with a post variable to another server. I've looked into Nginx but as far is can see this server can only be bound to receive http packets. Although it is asynchronous. What is the best way to achieve this listening-service on linux? And which has the capabilities to do the above mentioned processing?

• How to prevent carriage return being copied to clipboard in Powershell?

  I have a powershell script that is hashing the MAC address, then posting it into a file and a clipboard. $hash = [System.BitConverter]::ToString($md5.ComputeHash($utf8.GetBytes($MAC))) $hash | clip $hash | Out-File $Env:USERPROFILE\Desktop\this.txt The issue I am having is that a carriage return is being exported to the clipboard. I don't want that. Is there a way of stopping that happening? Additional info - When I paste the text that is on the clipboard into a hex editor I see 0D0A The clipboard function would be fine if I could just loose that some how? Thanks

  've been puzzling over cronjobs for the last few hours. I've read documentation and examples. I understand the basics and concepts, but haven't gotten anything to work. So I would appreciate some help with this total noob dilemma. The ultimate goal is to schedule the execution of a django function every day. Before I get that far, I want to know that I can schedule any old script to run, first once, then on a regular basis. So I want to: 1) Write a simple script (perhaps a bash script) that will allow me to determine that yes, it did indeed run successfully, or that it failed. 2) schedule this script to run at the top of the hour I tried writing a bash script that simple output some text to the terminal: #!/bin/bash echo "The script ran" Then I dropped this into a .txt file MAILTO = *****.******@gmail.com 05 * * * * /home/vadmin/development/test.sh But nothing happened. I'm sure I did many things wrong. Where do I start to fix all of this?

  Hi all, I've bought a wildcard ssl certificate from a company, i sent them the csr file and they send me two certificate files namely CA.txt and com_sertificate. I've searched on web and find some tutorials about tomcat and ssl but i can not accomplish with these two files. All that tutorials mention about different files that i don't have. • Too many files open issue (in CentOS)

  Recently I ran into this issue in one of our production machines. The actual issue from PHP looked like this: fopen(dberror_20110308.txt): failed to open stream: Too many open files I am running LAMP stack along with memcache in this machine. I also run a couple of Java applications in this machine. While I did increase the limit on the number of files that can be opened to 10000 (from 1024), I would really like to know if there is an easy way to track this (# of files open at any moment) as a metric. I know lsof is a command which will list the file descriptors opened by processes. Wondering if there is any other better (in terms of report) way of tracking this using say, nagios.

  I’ve read the manual on URI routing and views and something is not clicking with me. In my views folder, I have a subfolder called products. In there is a file called product_view. In my controller, I have: function index() { $data['title'] = 'Product Overview'; $data['main_content'] = 'products/product_view'; $this->load->view('templates/main.php', $data); } The template loads a header view, a footer view and a navigation view, plus the view as a main content variable. In my URI routing, I have: $route['products/product-overview'] = 'products/product_view']; This causes a 404 error when I try to go to domain.com/products/product-overview. Do I need to do something with my .htaccess? If so, what?   I want to add an alias file to my project folder to quickly open and edit files in it with a simple shell command. To make it more portable, I would like to use only relative paths. I want something like this: ### .profile source /my/project/folder/aliases.bash and ### aliases.bash editprojectfiles="edit [/my/project/folder/]afile.txt" The problem for me now is how to retrieve [/my/project/folder/] automatically. I tried to use $PWD variable, but the result is that the alias points to the folder of .profile file and not the aliases.bash ones. Is there a way to get this?

• Server refuses to boot when Raid5 disk is disconnected - /root/ missing

  I recently set up a NAS server running a Debian OS (6.0.4) It contains 4 disks, 3 of them are in a Raid5 array, while the last one is used for the OS. To simulate a disk-failure I unplugged one of the raid disks, which resulted in the OS being unable to boot. It started the boot, recognized that md0 (the raid array) was running on 2/3 disks, and then threw a few errors. It was unable to find the following directories: /dev/root on /root, /dev on /root/dev, /sys on /root/sys, /proc on /root/proc It appears this happens regardless of which raid disk is removed. • Dual Boot issues with Windows 7 and Ubuntu

  I'm finding myself in a rather unique situation. I've read through just about every resource I can find about this and while things have helped me understand some background, I haven't yet been able to find a solution. So I'm asking here. I originally had just a Windows 7 64-bit OS installation on my desktop. Learning that I couldn't do anything with Apache, PHP and MySql from within a 64-bit system, I did some research and found out that I could use Ubuntu. I've installed the latest version: 11.04. I created a CD to install Ubuntu from and the install went just fine. I installed it side-by-side with Windows 7. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine through the dual-boot option. When I reboot to load Windows though, the Grub2 list shows Windows 7 (loader) and when I select this option the Windows System Recovery loads instead of the actual OS. I haven't made it past there because I didn't know what to do. I just shut the computer down and rebooted into Ubuntu. I've been working for the last hour and a half to try to figure out how to boot into the Windows 7 OS and I haven't got a clue. While I'm somewhat proficient with Windows 7, I'm totally new to Ubuntu, so if you do know what needs to happen, please keep it simple enough that I'll be able to understand. Very often I see suggestions about how to use the .NET class System.Net.WebClient and of course this works, you can code pretty much anything you like in .NET. Here I’d just like to raise the profile of an alternative. This approach uses the HTTP Connection Manager, one of the stock connection managers, so you can use configurations and property expressions in the same way you would for all other connections. Settings like the security details that you would want to make configurable already are, but if you take the .NET route you have to write quite a lot of code to manage those values via package variables. Using the connection manager we get all of that flexibility for free. The screenshot below illustrate some of the options we have. Using the HttpClientConnection class makes for much simpler code as well. I have demonstrated two methods, DownloadFile which just downloads a file to disk, and DownloadData which downloads the file and retains it in memory. In each case we show a message box to note the completion of the download. • Java Logger API

  This is a more like a tip rather than technical write up and serves as a quick intro for newbies. The logger API helps to diagnose application level or JDK level issues at runtime. There are 7 levels which decide the detailing in logging (SEVERE, WARNING, INFO, CONFIG, FINE, FINER, FINEST). Its best to start with highest level and as we narrow down, use more detailed logging for a specific area. SEVERE is the highest and FINEST is the lowest. This may not make sense until we understand some jargon. The Logger class provides the ability to stream messages to an output stream in a format that can be controlled by the user. What this translates to is, I can create a logger with this simple invocation and use it add debug messages in my class: import java.util.logging.*; private static final Logger focusLog = Logger.getLogger("java.awt.focus.KeyboardFocusManager"); if (focusLog.isLoggable(Level.FINEST)) { focusLog.log(Level.FINEST, "Calling peer setCurrentFocusOwner}); LogManager acts like a book keeper and all the getLogger calls are forwarded to LogManager. The LogManager itself is a singleton class object which gets statically initialized on JVM start up. More on this later. If there is no existing logger with the given name, a new one is created. If there is one (and not yet GC’ed), then the existing Logger object is returned. By default, a root logger is created on JVM start up. All anonymous loggers are made as the children of the root logger. Named loggers have the hierarchy as per their name resolutions. Eg: java.awt.focus is the parent logger for java.awt.focus.KeyboardFocusManager etc. Before logging any message, the logger checks for the log level specified. If null is specified, the log level of the parent logger will be set. However, if the log level is off, no log messages would be written, irrespective of the parent’s log level. All the messages that are posted to the Logger are handled as a LogRecord object.i.e. FocusLog.log would create a new LogRecord object with the log level and message as its data members). The level of logging and thread number are also tracked. LogRecord is passed on to all the registered Handlers. Handler is basically a means to output the messages. The output may be redirected to either a log file or console or a network logging service. The Handler classes use the LogManager properties to set filters and formatters. During initialization or JVM start up, LogManager looks for logging.properties file in jre/lib and sets the properties if the file is provided. An alternate location for properties file can also be specified by setting java.util.logging.config.file system property. This can be set in Java Control Panel ? Java ? Runtime parameters as -Djava.util.logging.config.file = <mylogfile> or passed as a command line parameter java -Djava.util.logging.config.file = C:/Sunita/myLog The redirection of logging depends on what is specified rather registered as a handler with JVM in the properties file. java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler sends the output to system.err and java.util.logging.FileHandler sends the output to file. File name of the log file can also be specified. Just set the logger name to java.awt.focus.level=FINEST and change the default log level to FINEST. Below is a basic sample program. The sample programs are from http://www2.cs.uic.edu/~sloan/CLASSES/java/ and have been modified to illustrate the logging API. By changing the .level property in the logging.properties file, one can control the output written to the logs. To play around with the example, try changing the levels in the logging.properties file and notice the difference in messages going to the log file.
